Worthington Market Day Supplement | Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018
ThisWeekNews.com
A community tradition continues at 2018 Market Day festival Hand-crafts and hospitality will welcome an estimated 20,000 visitors and residents to Worthington’s downtown streets on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as a long-standing community tradition continues in the celebration of Old Worthington Market Day. Presented by the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce with cooperation of the City and community partners, the event features nearly 200 artists and crafts vendors, nonprofit community groups and sponsor booths, stretched along High Street (SR 23), from SR 161 south to South Street. The event is rain-or-shine. Market Day showcases the craftsmanship and creativity of area residents and others from throughout the region, while offering visitors an opportunity to discover the unique charm of our local businesses. The day-long festival offers a variety of experiences for the whole family. You’re invited to … Get personal. Hand-crafts and
customized goods are more popular than ever. A 2017 article in Forbes, “How Personalized Goods Are Shaping the Economy,” chronicles the revival of handcrafted goods that are “artisanal,” along with the popularity of Etsy (where many Market Day vendors have a presence) and the “maker movement” in general. As you stroll among the arts and crafts exhibitors or food and farm vendor booths, you’ll find many one-of-a-kind pieces of art, apparel, leather goods, home decorations and gift items. Get acquainted with Old Worthington’s distinctive shops, some of which will offer special sales or seasonal merchandise for Market Day shoppers. Look for sidewalk sales and specials, and enjoy activities organized by the Old Worthington Partnership, including a Bingo game inviting you to numerous downtown merchants. Several Old Worthington merchants also offer distinctive and personalized goods and services.
Get a snack, or lunch or dinner. Several of Worthington’s popular downtown restaurants will have Market Day food booths on the street, as well as full-menu, sit-down service at their establishments. Market Day food concessions are located primarily near the south end of the event area, while several food trucks and nonprofit groups serving food are sprinkled along the event route. See the information on page 3 about the DORA regulations enabling you to sip while you shop, enjoying favorite beer, wine and spirits, and a brewery event at local merchants. Get free stuff. Enjoy family entertainment and giveaways throughout the day at sponsor booths and community groups offering family activities, product demonstrations, samples and door prizes, and information. Get a break! Put your feet up on the complimentary shuttles offering transportation to the event area from the parking lot at Thomas Worthington High
School. (See the locations and shuttle providers on page 4.) Relax during your shopping; bring your snacks and meet your friends to the canopied rest area, the AAA Hospitality Center on W. New England Avenue and High Street. Stop at the chamber event headquarters in booth #236, at the corner of High Street and W. New England Avenue, where you’ll find event directories, bottled water and soft drinks ($1, a donation to the Chamber’s scholarship funds), and refreshment for pets. Get smart. Brush up on Worthington history and hunt for bargain books at community partner activities. On the southeast Village Green, the Worthington Historical Society will conduct its popular annual flea market, a tradition since the 1950s. At Old Worthington Library, 820 High St., a book sale benefiting the Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries will be under way from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the community meeting room.

Worthington Market Day Supplement | Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018
Sip while you shop …
Something fun is brewing at Old Worthington merchants and eateries on Market Day While enjoying Market Day crafts, food and community vendors, take time to patronize the charming shops and restaurants in Old Worthington and to enjoy special activities, sales and menus for Market Day visitors, including these: Wondering about all the great things to do, places to shop, and restaurants to enjoy food and drink in Old Worthington? Bingo! You’re in luck. You’ll find a great source of suggestions — and an opportunity to win a grand prize — when you visit booth #264, in front of Graeter’s Ice Cream, where you’ll meet volunteers from The Old Worthington Partnership. This nonprofit organization, which promotes the Old Worthington experience, will have a bingo card that invites you to circulate among Old Worthington businesses and make purchases. The group also will have a prize wheel with giveaways. Igloo Letterpress (661-B High St.) is hosting a “garage sale” with fixtures, furniture, letterpress projects and more. Some of your favorite spots in Old Worthington are combining forces with Rhinegeist and Seventh Son breweries for a Saturday afternoon Beer Crawl. It’s very simple. You “crawl” around Old Worthington and visit participating bars and restaurants at your leisure between noon and 4 p.m. to enjoy beers from the two breweries.
Participating are: House Wine; Old Bag of Nails; The Half Pint; The Pub Out Back; The Whitney House; and The Worthington Inn. If you’re hungry, get brunch along the way (reservations might be necessary). You should be able to find different beers at each stop. You can pick the time, start, order and finish as you wish. Inquire at the Old Worthington Partnership booth to learn what’s available from the two breweries that you might not normally see (an advantage of local small businesses). See the related story on this page about the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, in effect until 4 p.m. At the DORA-approved businesses, you can get your beer (or any other adult beverages) in a plastic cup and take it around with you on the block. Some adult board games and other activities are planned in the House Wine (644 High St.) parking lot. AR Workshop (695 High St.) is nearing its first anniversary in business. The workshop will have a Market Day booth near the entrance to its studio. Fritzy Jacobs has two Market Day booths, sidewalk sales and in-store delights at 635 High St. Dewey’s Pizza, Jet’s Pizza, The Worthington Inn and Everest Cuisine will have Market Day food booths, as well as in-restaurant treats.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Market Day, you can enjoy your favorite libations while shopping at vendor booths and downtown merchants. The Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) allows festival visitors who purchase an alcoholic beverage from one of eight qualified restaurants to walk throughout the defined downtown Worthington event area with their beverage in an approved, DORAlabeled container. Please note signs at the event that identify the permitted area along High Street from Village Green Drive to South Street. Please stay within the defined area – and please drink responsibly.
Nick and Beth Dekker enjoy a beverage from a qualified restaurant while the DORA is in effect at a downtown festival.
Purchase DORA beverages at: • Dewey’s Pizza, 640 High St. • Everest Cuisine, 652 High St. • The Half Pint, 671 High St. • House Wine, 644 High St. • La Chatelaine, 627 High St. • Old Bag of Nails, 663 High St. • The Whitney House, 666 High St. • The Worthington Inn, 649 High St.
