Area’s Largest Wedding Expo Returns The Columbus Weddings Show, Central Ohio’s biggest and best wedding expo, opens this month with new attractions and old favorites By Emma Frankart Henterly, Columbus Weddings Editor It’s back! The annual Columbus Weddings Show presented by Worthington Jewelers takes place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 11-12 at the Ohio Expo Center’s Kasich Hall. “This is the biggest and best bridal show in the region; whether you’re newly engaged or just a few months from your wedding, you’ll find what you’re looking for here,” said Weston Davis, events marketing manager for Dispatch Events. “It really is a one-stop shop.” Grab a signature drink from the Eye-Do bar presented by ReVision LASIK, and stroll through the aisles as you peruse more than 120 of the best vendors Central Ohio has to offer. You’ll find exclusive, show-only deals and discounts; tasty samples from caterers and bakers; DJ demos and more. As in years past, two daily runway shows will display the latest and greatest in wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses and menswear. The fashion displays will bookend a special appearance by this year’s celebrity guest, Randy Fenoli of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. The gown designer, author and TV star will give a presentation and take questions from the audience. Audience members also will have the opportunity to take a photo with Fenoli. And of course, it wouldn’t be the Columbus Weddings Show without some
fabulous prizes and giveaways. This year’s grand prize is a $2,500 gift certificate to presenting sponsor Worthington Jewelers, plus other registry prizes valued at more than $13,000. In addition to the vendors you’d expect— photographers, venues, caterers, cake bakers, wedding-day attire and more—a number of nontraditional vendors will be on hand to help you set your day apart from the rest. Al’s Delicious Popcorn can help you make favors that guests will look forward to; Melanin Mamaa Boutique is offering handcrafted costume jewelry to personalize your look; sweet treats from Sadie Baby Sweets can create a dessert table to remember. And for brides who like to live on the wild side, there’s Studio Rouge, for pole dancing fitness classes; and Celebrate Your Sexy, for a boudoir photography session that makes a perfect gift for your spouse-to-be. Tickets are $12 at the door, or $10 if purchased in advance online. Want some one-on-one time with Fenoli? Purchase a VIP meet-and-greet ticket for only $30 to gain access to the exclusive reception featuring our celebrity guest, as well as VIP seating for his presentation and a professional photo with the star. Parking at the Ohio Expo Center is $5, cash only. For tickets and more information, visit cbusweddings.com.

Randy Fenoli looks to educate, empower and elevate brides-to-be By Sarah Sole, ThisWeek Community News Randy Fenoli began sewing at the tender age of 9. Fenoli had been instructed by his mother, Jeanette, not to touch the sewing machine stored in her room. Jeanette had tried and failed to sew, but the youngest of her seven children fared much better. Working from a pattern he found for a simple shift dress, he laid down the fabric, pinned and cut out the pattern, then sewed and pressed it. “She wore it to work the next day,” Fenoli said. The dress was the entrance into Fenoli’s sewing career. He would vault into the wedding gown industry as a talented young designer in his late 20s, then make a name for himself in the reality TV world as the host of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress”. Fenoli will appear at the Columbus Weddings Show Jan. 11 and 12 at Kasich Hall at the Ohio Exposition Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. The wedding gown guru will give a stage presentation each day at 2:15 p.m., answer audience questions and meet with guests. Brides and couples can also enter a contest via cbusweddings.com for a chance to dine with Fenoli at LaScala Restaurant the evening of Jan. 11. For Fenoli, the meet and greets give him the chance to offer his ‘Three E’s’ to brides: Educate, Empower and Elevate. And there’s much to consider in the world of bridal gowns: Silhouette and body types, the size of one’s bouquet and other factors. Although it might be hard to imagine, there was a time when Fenoli wasn’t associated with
®
wedding style. When he entered the Fashion Institute of Technology’s School of Art and Design he only wanted to design evening wear. “That was my one mission when I went to FIT,” he said. That all changed when Fenoli participated in a contest in the early 1990s, in which he designed a mood board and designs for bridal and bridesmaid dresses. His work caught the attention of one of the judges, Vivian Dessy Diamond, who got him a gig designing for the Vivian and Paul Diamond Collection and Dessy Creations. Although Fenoli is now firmly entrenched in the world of wedding dresses, he’s still finding ways to take his craft to new places. His newest endeavor, “Say Yes to the Dress America,” has Fenoli flying across the country meeting with excited couples. Fenoli describes the show, which premiered last week on TLC, as “‘Say Yes to the Dress’ on steroids. ” The reality TV host officiated over 50 weddings at once in New York City’s Central Park on July 10, and surprised 10 of those couples at their homes beforehand with a ‘knock and shock’. “It’s so emotional,” he said. Although Fenoli was slated to marry 52 couples in a massive ceremony, complications ensued when one of the grooms fainted and had to be briefly hospitalized. Not one to be deterred, Fenoli took his camera crew to the couple’s hotel room later that night and married the bride and groom in their robes. Fenoli said he thinks the 10 episodes and twohour season finale will be groundbreaking. “I’m really excited for it to premiere,” he said.

Put a ring on it
Worthington Jewelers owner Bob Capace talks engagement ring, wedding band trends By Sarah Sole In the world of engagement rings, one trend is sticking around. Halo settings, in which a center diamond is surrounded by smaller diamonds, has been all the rage for the last three to five years, according to Bob Capace, owner of Worthington Jewelers. “It’s been really popular,” he said. Other popular trends for the rings include delicate, petite styles and antique styles such as art deco, art nouveau and Edwardian, Capace said. “People like the old kind of antique style,” he said. As far as metals go, white gold is still the classic. Still, as platinum has come down in price, many have opted for the cheaper choice, Capace said. While white gold is the classic metal for engagement rings, diamonds, unsurprisingly, are still the stone of choice. The reason? The stones are very durable, Capace said. Another stone that is nearly as durable as the diamond though, is the sapphire, Capace said. It’s the second most common choice for engagement rings, and comes in a variety of colors. They’re a good alternative to the diamond, Capace said, and also less expensive. Another inexpensive option is estate engagement rings, Capace said. Some are older styles, such as art deco, but others
Brittany Hawkins Photography
can be three or six months old. “The savings on those are significant,” he said. While the choice of engagement ring is paramount, the delivery is just as important, Capace said. Partners should
think of how they will give the ring to their loved one, he said, because it’s a memory the two will share for a lifetime. “That’s as important as the ring,” he said. While diamonds are the first choice
for engagement rings, the stones are also the primary pick for women’s wedding bands, Capace said. Women tend to choose them over plain metal bands, he said. Many women opt for two bands, to be worn on either side of the engagement ring, he said. They can be worn together as stackable rings, and often feature different colored gemstones or different types of metal. Like diamonds for women, gold is the standard for men’s wedding bands, Capace said. Tungsten, titanium and cobalt are alternative choices for some though, because they are perceived as indestructible. Regardless of whether that’s actually true, they’re much less expensive than precious metals such as gold or platinum. One drawback to those alternative metals, though, is that they can’t be resized like precious metals can. A metal that can be resized? Tantalum. It’s commonly used in electronics, Capace said, and popular with men because its dark grey appearance looks almost like gun metal. “Guys like it because it’s darker,” he said. The tantalum ring, like the other alternative metals, is also a less expensive choice. It will run about $600, Capace said. A gold ring would be twice as much money, he said.

Wedding Gown Know-How Local brides share their tips for smooth sailing as you prep for the big day
By Emma Frankart Henterly Whether you’re sporting a sleek mermaid silhouette or a full, dramatic ballgown, chances are you’ve never worn anything like your wedding-day attire before. Wrangling unruly layers of tulle, shimmying into form-fitting Mikado silk or fastening dozens of tuxedo buttons is anything but graceful; learn from others’ experiences to make sure you avoid missteps. The No. 1 piece of advice we heard? Wear Spanx or other shapewear to ensure a slim, line-free silhouette. No. 2? Make sure someone—your bridesmaid, maid of honor, mother, sister—knows how to operate your bustle. Read on for more. “I chose a ‘block’ heel vs. stiletto for my shoes, and oh my god, am I glad I did! I was
totally comfortable in them all night long.” —Nicole Diaz, married Alejandro Diaz on Sept. 21, 2018 “Use Body Glide [anti-chafing gel] on itchy spots! My wedding gown had a lot of beading and was uncomfortable under my arms. Body Glide saved me from embarrassing red spots on the big day!” —Katelynn Dougherty, married Ben Lautzenheiser on Sept. 22, 2018 “Crochet hooks for buttons are a must. Teach the groom how to do this so he can help you take your dress off at the end of the night. You might think you want to wear your wedding dress forever, but trust me, by the end of the night you will be so over wearing it that you just want out!” —Brittney Haas, married Alex Haas on Oct. 6, 2018
“Double-sided tape comes in handy to keep everything in place—you can even use it for jewelry.” —Kayla Childs, married Aaron Childs on Oct. 5, 2018 “I decided to bring a change of shoes to be more comfortable at the reception: Kate Spade New York glitter Keds. They were not broken in, so I had huge blisters on my ankles at the end of the night. Needless to say: Break in your shoes!” —Sarah Hackett, married Jeff Hackett on Oct. 27, 2018 “I had a giant ballgown that weighed 15 pounds. The top was illusion, so it was made of mesh. When we were going through my fittings, I would get a rash on my shoulders and neck after wearing it for a few minutes. We ended up
adding clear plastic straps connected to the skirt of the dress to act as ‘suspenders’ to hold the skirt up. It was a game-changer!” —Amy Waugh, married Justin Waugh on Oct. 3, 2018 “My mom ended up sewing my dress onto my corset undergarment on the day of the wedding. Even with the clips and hooks, the dress was sliding down. We were glad we packed the emergency sewing kit!” —Erin Carpenter, married Kevin Carpenter on Aug. 18, 2018

Keeping it casual Relax before the wedding with a low-key rehearsal dinner By Peter Tonguette Weddings are filled with rules and decorum, from traditions surrounding the order that parents are seated pre-ceremony to etiquette about how to properly address an invitation. Rehearsal dinners, on the other hand, can serve as a welcome reprieve from all that formality. For a few hours, friends and family can feel free to socialize without stressing over the wedding that’s right around the corner. One way to make a rehearsal dinner even more low-key is to serve the food family-style. Molly and Rob Patridge held their December 2017 rehearsal dinner at La Scala, where ample helpings of such Italian favorites as bruschetta and meatballs were served as appetizers for a party of 23 family members. The couple opted for a sit-down dinner later in the evening, but the opportunity to circulate among relatives beforehand proved to be a real plus. “For the most part, we all live in Columbus, but we’re rarely all together in the same room,” Molly says. “It was nice to visit and meet everyone, and just have that opportunity to chat or do introductions before you had to sit down.” Whether your wedding party consists of a small group of family members or a wide swath of friends, social interaction is a major appeal of family-style dinners. “It helps people get to know each other,
gives them something to talk about, break the ice a little bit,” says Ann Anderson of Brio Tuscan Grille at Polaris Fashion Place. “You’re going to spend ... three days with these people, so you want to do something different. You don’t want to do the same thing every day.” At both its Polaris and Easton locations, Brio offers a pair of family-style dinner packages with sides that include pesto crushed potatoes and creamy polenta. Entrées range from pasta alla vodka to rigatoni alfredo. “You’re not going to go hungry,” Anderson says. “It gives people the choices [so] they don’t have to pick just one thing. ... If you do that formal, sitdown dinner, you order [a dish] and that’s what you get.” Plus, there’s likely to be less socializing if every member of your party is seated at a table. “You’re not really supposed to get up until you’re served, so you’re interacting with just the people at your table,” Anderson says. “You’re not having the opportunity to talk to other people, passing food around or talking to somebody behind you.” For their part, the Patridges don’t regret their choice to go casual on the eve of their wedding. “It was just stress-free—kind of hanging out, having some bites to eat,” Rob says. “It was just really nice.” This story first appeared in the Fall/ Winter 2019 issue of Columbus Weddings, published June 2019.

Flip Your Ceremony Space for Your Reception Why couples are saying “I do” to the convenience of a single-venue wedding day
By Brooke Preston As the wedding industry has ballooned in recent decades, many celebrations have become multiday, multivenue affairs. While some still choose to hold a ceremony at a place of worship, park or other location before heading to a second reception destination, many couples seek out the convenience and simplicity of a single-venue wedding day. However, deciding on a one-stop wedding shouldn’t mean sacrificing style. Some of Central Ohio’s best facilities can quickly and expertly “flip” a room between ceremony and reception, or create smaller, distinct and chic spaces within one site. Chad and Noelle Barson were wed Dec. 7, 2018, at Jorgensen Farms Historic Barn in Westerville. They cited convenience and simplicity as their deciding factors in choosing a single-venue wedding. “We kind of just wanted to have everything in one spot as a convenience to our guests, so they didn’t have to go do a ceremony one place, and then drive someplace else for the rest of the evening,” says Chad. “The wedding was on a Friday, and we had guests coming from out of town that day. I think our guests loved having everything in one place.” The Barsons also felt that a single-venue wedding best fit their overall vision. “We didn’t have elaborate centerpieces and all these intricacies that you might see in other weddings. We wanted it to be simple yet elegant and let the beauty of the venue speak for itself,” Chad explains. The “less is more” approach to décor helped reduce setup time, he adds, as did opting to use Jorgensen Farms’ own vendors in many cases, as their staff was already welltrained in how to utilize and efficiently flip the space. Ann Marie Orren, catering and weddings manager at Scioto Reserve Country Club in Powell, advises that a single-venue wedding can provide flexibility and peace of mind. Given Ohio’s fickle, unpredictable weather, Orren recommends that couples looking for an outdoor ceremony space ask a prospective venue if it includes the option to
A ceremony and reception at Jorgensen Farms Historic Barn meant fewer details to coordinate for Noelle and Chad Barson. Photo by Style & Story
convert the reception space for a ceremony if needed, as hers does, and if the venue staff has expertise in flipping a space with little notice. “Ohio weather is crazy; you never know what will happen. We have to roll with the punches,” Orren says. “We always want to give couples the vision they’re looking for, but if conditions start to turn, I can start to do small things on our side to prep our
indoor space, just in case.” Even for those couples who choose an indoor ceremony and reception, Orren and her team work quickly during cocktail hour, transitioning the space in roughly 30 minutes. To keep the day moving smoothly during single-venue weddings, she recommends working with only those vendors and venues experienced in flipping a room, and to consult with them on how to coordinate
any tricky transitions or reduce the amount of moving pieces without sacrificing quality. For example, a single statement piece like an arbor or backdrop can be placed behind the couple during the ceremony and repurposed behind the sweetheart or head table during the reception. And like many wedding venues that offer single-room setups, both Jorgensen Farms and Scioto Reserve have flexible options for the ceremony and reception arrangements, as well as a dedicated area for cocktail hour. That element is vital, as it allows guests to relax and mingle in a new, distinct part of the space, none the wiser as staff work quickly behind the scenes to repurpose the main area for the reception. Even in moments when the couple may need to use a portion of the space while it is being flipped, venues can often accommodate unusual requests, especially with good advance communication. For instance, because the Barsons were married on a December evening, outdoor photos were out of the question; they worked with their photographer and Jorgensen Farms staff beforehand to plan and avoid any potential snags. “Where we had our ceremony, we had an arbor up front and lace curtains on the wall,” explains Chad. “When they were flipping the room, they just started in the back of the room, kind of just allowing pictures to be taken. The staff just worked around us. They’ve done so many weddings, and they understand the limitations at different times of the year. They asked us questions and talked through different scenarios.” All that advance planning paid off; the Barsons and their guests enjoyed their fun and seamless single-venue wedding in a space just right for their needs. “We loved working with the staff; they are very accommodating and lay everything out on the table for you so you know exactly what to expect,” Chad says. “We have no regrets at all.” This story first appeared in the Fall/ Winter 2019 issue of Columbus Weddings, published June 2019.

Start with Trust
BBB provides advice, asisstance for a successful wedding day From the moment the question is popped until the day the “I do’s” are exchanged, brides and grooms-to-be have plenty of planning to do. Weddings can be stressful enough without worrying about whether or not you can trust your vendors to follow through on the big day. Thankfully, beginning your planning process by vetting vendors may ward off future mishaps. When the wedding is over, you’ll want to remember the special moments, not how an untrustworthy business let you down. When choosing vendors to work with, don’t underestimate the importance of a simple online search or referrals from trusted loved ones. Wedding planners can look for company complaints with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Federal Trade Commission and your Better Business Bureau. BBB knows well the importance of providing consumers with accurate information about the trustworthiness of businesses; in fact, trust is what BBB is best at promoting, making sure consumers “Start with Trust” as they make important decisions on vendors they plan to hire for their Big Day, a special home improvement project or a major car repair - just to name a few. The mission of BBB is to advance business trust as we work to help build better businesses; and to recognize those businesses who showcase best practices while conducting business with integrity, with honesty, and with the customer in mind. Through evaluation and Accreditation; education and training; and celebrating great role models, BBB builds a community of businesses which have the opportunity to impact people and communities positively. BBB believes that trust grows people, businesses and communities. People are exposed to thousands of advertising and marketing messages every day. In the midst of all this, people continue to rely on BBB in
record numbers. BBB isn’t just a place to go to complain; BBB continues to be a trusted advisor and resource for consumers to refer to when making all of life’s decisions. With more than 2,000,000 visitors to the BBB of Central Ohio’s website each year, it’s clear that consumers are coming to BBB because they know the information they find can be trusted. BBB knows that a wedding is one of life’s most special moments, and every couple wants it to be exactly how they envision. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is for a vendor not to show up or your videographer stop returning your emails. When you’re mapping out resources to use to plan your wedding day, be sure to add BBB to the list. At bbbweddinghelp.com, BBB makes it easy to map out a timeline of tasks, get information on average pricing in your area, find local, trustworthy businesses and even request pricing information from them. BBB can also give you an all important look at any information that is available on companies that you are thinking about including in your big day. At bbb.org, you can find ratings for businesses across North America, see if there are any complaints or customer reviews submitted for a company, and find a list of trusted businesses if you need a starting point. BBB always encourages consumers to check with bbb.org prior to making any purchasing decisions in an effort to provide them with as much information as possible to make a smart choice. In nearly every city in North America, BBB has real people looking at each complaint, customer review, and scam report that we receive. BBB believes in the power of trust, and that trust is at the heart of the most precious personal relationships and it should be central to every transaction, purchase and investment made.
DID YOU KNOW....
Origins of wedding flowers
While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and he rbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.
