Pre-Festival Jury process The Festival enjoys the works of fineart and fine-craft artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication.org. Our jury process–which takes place in March– includes three jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to our jurors Ken Emerick, Kat Harris, and Rebecca Rae for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during the jurying process. They reviewed the work of nearly 300 applicants. Four images, three of work and one of booth presentation, as provided by the artists, were reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of one-seven (seven is best) and the mean and median

ARTISTS Best of Show Awards Each year at the Arts Festival, two judges review the artwork on display to honor participating artists with awards. The Judges select four winners: best of show, first place, second place and third place. Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Look for these award-winning artists from 2018 at this year’s Festival. BEST OF SHOW 2018
Peggy Schuning | Mixed Media 2D Booth # 134 Slate, stone, smalti, and other natural and repurposed materials are adhered to light-weight board with powdered colorant mixed with thinset. I focus on the beauty of the materials. I then strive to highlight the color, design, or other understated detail with relevant pieces. FIRST PLACE
Michelle Chang and Wayne Gao | Mixed Media 3D Booth # 128 We merged the three-dimensional lines technique into U.S. ceramic arts, the characteristic of this ceramic technique is to use Chinese traditional brush and own formula glazes to painted the design on a slab of clay and project it into three-dimensions image. The method utilizes a particular medium temperature frit glaze then firing in a high temperature kiln to achieve art. The artworks are designed both to be hung and as furniture in wrought iron stands. THIRD PLACE
Antonio Matthews | Drawing Booth #160 My arena is realism and my subjects are animals and people. My inspiration and talent is a God given gift. I utilize my gift to bring to life the struggles of people rooted in the reality of their lives. As a result of the intensity developed through facial expression, hand gestures, eyes and overall composition, the viewer connects with the emotion and mood of the subjects.
