COORDINATING COMMITTEE Be a part of the art and join our Coordinating Committee. Our dynamic group of volunteers begins monthly meetings in February and organizes everything from jurying the artists who participate to booking the bands. The Coordinating Committee also selects the refreshment vendors, the art activities and works with staff to make sure everything runs smoothly during the event. VOLUNTEERS Thank you to our volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event. Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. These vital positions include artist registration, booth sitting, set up and tear down of the site, pick up and delivery of artwork for patrons, all while making new friends and enjoying the festival. The range in age and interests of the volunteers vary from students to seniors and creates a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks. The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are grateful for each individual who chooses to become a part of the art this Labor Day as a volunteer.

ARTISTS Emerging Artists Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their careers as festival artists, the Emerging Artists’ Program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist. In a supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically, through a mentoring program.

Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country.

I feel things deeply; I often ponder the state of humanity, the struggles of our world and the outlook for our collective future. My art is an expression of my emotions, thoughts and passions. I express myself outwardly on canvas in color and texture. This is deeply gratifying for me as it allows me to share with others, my innermost feelings.

I choose to use acrylic paints for its quick drying time. This enables me to create layers on canvas. This helps me demonstrate complexity. I use everyday kitchen items, recycled cardboard and many other tools to create original forms and textures in my art. I enjoy the journey of painting new pieces. There is a thrill of discovering what my work will yield next. It’s what keeps me engaged.

I paint to inspire, challenge, and calm the soul.

I draw inspiration from cellular forms.

These forms flow, oscillate and intersect in Thursday, August 30, 2018

my paintings. At times obsessively painted and at other times concealed or muted, the cellular form drives my paintings and allows me to explore themes through this most basic representation. I enjoy giving attention to the many parts that make a whole. Specifically, the way in which cells provide life for all organisms and therefore allow for consciousness to occur. I often use resin to create physical space between the layers of paint, and when viewed from the side, there is a visual record of the process. in this way, the path may not be completely seen, but is not forgotten.

Pre-Festival Jury process

Did you know?. . .

The festival enjoys the works of fine-art and finecraft artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication.org. Our jury process, that takes place in March, includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to our jurors Stephanie Rond, April Sunami and Margaret Wunderlich for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during the jurying process. They reviewed the work of nearly 300 artists that applied. Four images, three of work and one of booth, provided by the artists, were reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1-7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be invited, not invited, or put on a waitlist.

• T he City of Upper Arlington’s Cultural Arts Division has produced the Festival since 1983?

• T he Festival is sustained by donations and sponsorship?

•W e use anywhere from 50-130 gallons of paint for the grass mural each year?

The Festival is an incredible undertaking and we are impressed each year at the ingenuity involved in its success. Here then is the Festival by the numbers: 11 months to plan; 15 members of a dynamic team to coordinate; 3 jurors to choose 150 artists from some 300 applicants; 14 city departments involved in every aspect of the event; 192 volunteers and 20,000 visitors supporting the arts.

ARTISTS Best of Show Awards Each year at the Arts Festival two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards. The Judges select four winners– best of show, first place, second place and third place. Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year award-winning festival artists will receive original artwork created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966 and this year a piece from Mary Ann Crago whose work can be found in booth #95. Look for these award-winning artists from 2017 at this year’s Festival.

BEST OF SHOW 2017

Thomas Bothe | Ceramics, Booth #6

I like the challenge of once firing as well as taking a 2D sketch and converting it into a 3D object using the wheel as a tool. I try to create pieces with a sense of calmness through surface and a level of sophistication through form. I use traditional throwing and hand-building techniques and decorate by spraying wood-ash and multiple glazes. Many people have said my work reminds them of trees. I spray the work because the subtle nature of the layered glazes has great appeal for me. It is important that the form has a balance and harmony with its components.

I put careful consideration on the proportion, weight, shape, color and design of the form.

We are wood turners, with an emphasis on fine art vessels as well as usable birdhouses & other items. The wood used is gathered by the artists. We recycle fallen trees into art.

UPPER ARLINGTON ARTS AND CULTURE MASTER PLAN

We invite you to help shape a master plan that guides how we integrate the arts and culture into our community in a way that reflects and celebrates Upper Arlington’s unique character.

The arts have been alive and well in Upper Arlington for almost 50 years, thanks to the work of the Cultural Arts Commission volunteer members and cultural arts staff in the Parks & Recreation Department.

An Arts and Culture Master Plan is being commissioned by the City to set the standard and strategic direction for how we continue to plan for, implement and enjoy a full range of creative endeavors, from public art to cultural programming.

As we ready to ask what the arts should look like in UA over the next 50 years, help us develop a framework that guides and supports a vibrant environment of arts and culture that is inclusive, sparks the imagination and builds pride in our community.
