Performances Every year the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival showcases a variety of talented performing artists. VOLUNTEERS Thank you to our volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event. Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. These vital positions include artist registration, booth sitting, set up and tear down of the site, pick up and delivery of artwork for patrons, all while making new friends and enjoying the festival. The range in age and interests of the volunteers vary from students to seniors and creates a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks. The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are grateful for each individual who chooses to become a part of the art this Labor Day as a volunteer.

ARTISTS Emerging Artists Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their careers as festival artists, the Emerging Artists’ Program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. In a supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically, through a mentoring program. Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country.

At Paolo Ferraris Colors, I create Painterly Photographs: digital pictures turned into lively art prints that borrow from the inspirational power of oil paintings and watercolors. My pieces always start with a picture, a digital file. After the frame is captured, I go through the interpretive process of painters. Using digital software, I morph shapes and experiment with colors. The result is the exciting encounter of Photography (the blueprint of reality) and Painting (creativity unleashed on canvas). With a focus on soaring skies and intense colorful landscapes, I hope to inspire and soothe the soul. I firmly believe we need visual beauty to keep our world healthy

Julie Yassenoff

With her love for textiles and the world she sees, she designs textiles on the computer inspired by the world around her. Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a frosted spring, a day at the beach or dangling vines on the Amazon River. She creates all her products with positivity of the unique world around us.

Julie is a trained fashion designer having attended Parsons and CCAD. While in college designing textiles became an interest and specialty as it allowed her to bring visual art to clothing. As a designer she likes to create unique textiles for people to enjoy.

All textiles are designed on the computer using different programs and styles and then printed on fabric. Using her drawings and photos she creates unique textiles that can look like a photomontage to a simulated knit fabric. The fabric is then sewn into such items as wrap skirts, dresses, pillows, sleeping masks, and necklaces.

Sara Pennington

I am an artist currently living in Columbus, Ohio. Originally, I moved to Columbus from a small town to pursue my education at The Ohio State University, as well as take figure drawing courses at the Columbus College of Art and Design. My art consists mostly of oil paintings and graphite or charcoal drawings. I enjoy creating realistic representations of my personal experiences, places I have visited, and highlighting the beauty in everyday objects. I also love creating portraits to capture a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likeness and expression. For me, achieving those characteristics on paper or canvas is incredibly challenging and rewarding, so I have worked to become very detailoriented in this way.

ARTISTS

Pre-Festival Jury process The festival enjoys the works of fine-art and finecraft artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication.org.

Our jury process, that takes place in March, includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to our jurors Sherrie Hawk, Hal Stevena and Caren Petersen for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during the jurying process. They reviewed the work of nearly 300 artists that applied. Four images, three of work and one of booth, provided by the artists, are reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1-7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be invited, not invited, or put on a waitlist.

The Festival is an incredible undertaking and we are impressed each year at the ingenuity involved in its success. Here then is the Festival by the numbers: 11 months to plan; 15 members of a dynamic team to coordinate; 3 jurors to choose 150 artists from some 300 applicants; 14 city departments involved in every aspect of the event; 192 volunteers and 20,000 visitors supporting the arts.

ARTISTS Best of Show Awards

Each year at the Arts Festival two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards. The Judges select four winners–best of show, first place, second place and third place.

Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year award-winning festival artists will receive original artwork created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966.

I am designing contemporary, one-of-a kind, nature themed wearable sculptures.

I carve the twigs in wax which are then lost wax cast in sterling silver. The twigs are then embellished with gold, bronze and assorted gemstones. The pieces are then oxidized and polished.

The dominant portion of my work consists of oil painting on stretched canvas applied entirely with palette knife. No additives or thinners are used in the paint mixing and application process and all work is done without the help of an assistant.
