Letter from the Director

Welcome

2015 marks the 49th time we have gathered and celebrated creativity at our City’s signature event; we welcome you to Upper Arlington to celebrate with us. The Festival is the largest event we produce, but it is not all we do. Beyond this event we also offer, in partnership with the Cultural Arts Commission and UA Arts, a variety of programs in the arts including: Arts in Community Education; Arts in Community Spaces; Concourse Gallery visual arts exhibits; Music in the Parks free summer concerts; host a diverse selection of theatrical productions and performance camps that take place at a variety of sites including community parks, gathering places and classrooms. A large community event like the annual arts festival has a considerable economic impact on Upper Arlington and encourages our citizens and visitors to explore the arts celebrating creativity wherever they find it. This year’s festival is presented by First Federal Bank, a full-service community bank headquartered in Defiance, Ohio, with 33 branches and 42 ATM locations in northwest Ohio, southeast Michigan and northeast Indiana and a loan production office in Columbus, Ohio. Their motto is “Better together,” and they truly believe in that philosophy. “We feel like the partnership between First Federal Bank, our customers and the communities we call home makes us all stronger. We really are better together!” Our most critical resource is the appreciation for the arts of our project pARTners making art experiences like Festival possible. To be a part of the art all year long like us on Facebook – Facebook.com/ualabordayartsfestival and follow us on Instagram @ualdaf.

T-Shirt This year’s Festival t-shirt was designed by our Cultural Arts Coordinator, AnnMarie McCallister. AnnMarie comes to us as an experienced design professional, having spent most of her career as a designer and art director with the Columbus Monthly family of magazines. She also enjoys more “handson” artistic expression in the form of fabric collage and art quilts. Be a part of the art and purchase a t-shirt for $10 in the Central Information Tent.

Coordinating Committee Be a part of the art and join our Coordinating Committee. Our dynamic group of volunteers begin monthly meetings in February and organize everything from jurying the artists who participate to booking the bands. The Coordinating Committee also selects the refreshment vendors, the art activities and works with Staff to make sure everything runs smoothly during the event. For more information or to join this dynamic group, call Lynette Santoro-Au 614583-5312. With all of these valued volunteers giving of their time, talent and treasure it is no wonder artists remark, “Wonderful art, patrons and show staff!...Thanks for all your support!”

Volunteers Thank you to our volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event. Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. These vital positions include artist registration, booth sitting, set up and tear down of the site, pick up and delivery of artwork for patrons, all while making new friends and enjoying the festival. The range in age and interests of the volunteers vary from students to seniors and creates a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks. The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are grateful for each individual who chooses to become a part of the art this Labor Day as a volunteer.

Pre-Festival Jury process The festival enjoys the works of fine-art and fine-craft artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication. org. Our jury process, that takes place in March, includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to our jurors Shayna McConville, Geoffrey Martin and Julie Jenkins for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during the jurying process. They reviewed the work of more than 300 artists that applied. Four images, three of work and one of booth, provided by the artists, are reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1-7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be invited, not invited, or put on a waitlist. The Festival is an incredible undertaking and we are impressed each year at the ingenuity involved in its success. Here then is the Festival by the numbers: 11 months to plan; 12 members of a dynamic team to coordinate; 3 jurors to choose 160 artists from some 317 applicants; 14 city departments involved in every aspect of the event; 219 volunteers and 20,000 visitors supporting the arts.

Emerging Artists Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their careers as festival artists, the Emerging Artists’ Program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. In a supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically, through a mentoring program. Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country. Support the next generation of festival artists and stop by the talented Emerging Artists’ Tents located on the east side of the festival near the brooms. Jon Cowley, Photography I use digital photographic techniques to create distinct images that immerse the viewer in the place. I use a digital camera to create distinct photographs of things both near and far, and big and small. I look for unique angles when creating

my photographs. I try to convey the feeling that I had when I was there, a wonder, beauty, smallness, grandeur. Brenda Campbell, Ceramics Pottery brings a balance to my life. Being creative artistically is a very left brain activity. This creativity helps to balance my engineering and teaching right brain. I love the freedom that creating pottery allows me. I can get lost in the creation of one of my pieces. As an engineer, there are definite answers and ways to do things. Ceramics allows me freedom from this. I can create pottery that fulfills my creativity without the restrictions that often accompany engineering endeavors. But, my engineering right brain does show itself in my art. I tend to like more angular and structured pieces. As a new potter, I am still experimenting with my designs and pieces. I am starting to see a little more whimsy in my creations. I had a lot of fun making my “Funky Chickens.” These chickens show an evolving part of me that I am trying to encourage. I started throwing clay on the potter’s wheel a little over a

Emerging Artists year ago. Lately, I have been doing more handbuilding pieces. The wheel creates pieces that are mostly circular in shape. Hand-built pieces can be any shape I desire, and thus allow me more originality. My ceramics are fired to cone 6 in the kiln. I am still learning a lot about clay and glazes. Most of my pieces are glazed with Amaco’s Velvet Underglazes prior to the first kiln firing. I love the bright colors these underglazes give. A clear glaze is then applied over the bisque-fired piece before the final firing. I have also been experimenting with Amaco’s Potter’s Choice Glazes. I love the widely varied outcomes that layering these glazes give. I am trying to determine what types of pottery works best for me and gives me the most satisfaction. Currently I have more ideas of things I want to try than I have time to actually attempt. I hope this surplus of ideas continues indefinitely. Tina Husted, Drawing This past year pastel chalk has been the predominant medium to express my interest in mainly landscapes but I do occasionally draw

other subjects. I use layering and blending of the chalks to create vivid pieces that reflect both color and depth. Kate Morris, Fiber As a fiber artist I seek to use a traditional craft technique to create art which celebrates the rich history of the skill and the modern aesthetic. I aim to make functional pieces, with a strong visual composition which can be cherished in the household as both a work of art and eventually as a family heirloom imbued with the owner’s own memories of use. All my full size quilts are hand quilted with “big stitch” quilting, using a heavier thread and larger stitching than is often found in more traditional quilts. Many of the stitching patterns that I design are influenced by Japanese stitching techniques or by Art Deco designs. My smaller mini quilts are studies utilizing different quilt making techniques and traditional patterns, such as paper piecing and Dresden plates, and feature a playful use of color and fabric designs.

Best of Show Awards

Each year at the Arts Festival two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards. The Judges select four winners– best of show, first place, second place and third place. Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year award-winning festival artists will receive a print of Northam Park created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966. Thank you to our sponsor Argo & Lehne Jewelers celebrating more than 90 years of award-winning customer

service. Their support includes bestowing a porcelain vessel created by artist Carol Snyder. Look for these award-winning artists from 2014 at this year’s Festival.

Best of Show

Mary Ann Crago, Mixed Media 3D booth #51 I combine found objects and old photos using glue and screws. I add acrylic, hand punched copper accents and hand sculpted bird figures. My work celebrates the beauty of objects whose histories have been lost. Each piece is built from a collection of repurposed parts; their histories rewritten as art.I combine found objects and old photos using glue and screws. Second Place

Carol Snyder, Ceramics booth #10 My influence is nature and the landscape. Fields and horizon lines play a significant role in my work and the patterns, textures and rhythms in them, whether natural or man-made. I use the vessels’ edges as the vantage point: as if it was the continuous line of the horizon.

Third Place

Janet Webb, Jewelry booth #84 I use sterling silver sheet and wire to make pendants, earrings, bracelets. Color is add with enamel.
