Prepare your home for a worry-free vacation Keep your home safe and energy efficient while you enjoy a well-deserved vacation. Planning ahead and taking a few minor precautions will keep your home from being a target of crime and help you save on your energy bills. Consider these home security and energy saving tips while you’re away: ■ Let there be light. Use automatic timers with your

Real Estate Matters Jerry White indoor lights. Look for a timer that can be set to a random pattern so all the lights don’t turn on and off at exactly the same time every day. Install motion detector lights outdoors.

■ Stop the presses. Put a hold on your mail and newspapers or arrange for a neighbor to take these in for you daily. ■ Lock ‘em up and keep them raised. Make sure your

windows are locked. Leave blinds, curtains and shades in their normal positions. Thieves are attracted to homes that remain covered day and night. ■ Park it on your driveway. Arrange to have a neighbor park on your driveway while you’re away. Or if you are leaving your car at home, park on the driveway instead of the garage. Have a neighbor move the car from time to time.

■ Notify the police. Contact your local police department about your departure. Many communities offer complimentary driveby service. ■ Pull the plugs. Unplug any appliance or electronic device that doesn’t need to stay on. Many items like microwaves, computers and televisions draw power even when not being used. Unplugging

appliances will also prevent damage in case of a storm or power surge. Remember to also unplug bigger items like the washer and dryer. Jerry White is executive vice president of operations for Coldwell Banker King Thompson and past Realtor of the Year for the Columbus Board of Realtors.

Great room is the heart of the Hendricks 2 model The Hendricks 3 (402-64) is a single level, 1,508 square foot, two bedroom, and two and a half bath home. The exterior style is contemporary-ranch, with a pleasing combination of brick and wood. The main entry has a covered porch, supported by two attractive architectural columns. A guest closet is conveniently located in the entry, which splits in two directions. To the right, we move past the gas fireplace, touching the great room, going towards a comfortable dining room, which touches the kitchen. The Ushaped kitchen is efficient, with ample space, including a pantry and garden window looking out over the front landscape. A nearby utility room, with access to the two-car garage, allows soiled clothes and

Home Design muddy shoes to be dropped off before entering the house. Groceries may be brought directly into the kitchen from the garage without concern for the weather. If we had gone left in the entry, we would also catch a corner of the great room on our way to the sleeping area. As we go down the short hail, we pass a full bathroom and linen closet on one side, and a good-sized second bedroom on the other. At the end of the hail

is the large master suite, with private bathroom and walk-in closet. This arrangement is ideal for a couple with young children. It affords privacy, while still being close enough to supervise the children. The heart of this home however, is the centrally located great room. Here family and friends can gather in the warmth of the fireplace to watch videos, listen to music or just enjoy the company.

Located on the side of the garage is 236 square feet of space that may be utilized as an extra storage area, or for the do-it-yourself person in the house, a shop. The Hendricks 3 (402-64) is the Landmark Designs

Inc. plan of the week. Up to 15 percent off construction plans is offered. Call 800-5621151 or visit ldiplans.com for details. A $25 study plan also is available, consisting of an artist rendering, elevations, floor plans and cross

section. Order online using the discount code LWD13 or send payment to Landmark Designs Inc. PO Box 5625 Eugene, Ore. 97405, and be sure to indicate the Hendricks 3 (402-64), discount code LWD13.
