Location is everything when hunting for a new home You’ve started your house hunt and dreams of large living spaces, finished basements and luxurious master bathrooms are floating in your head. But don’t forget that what is outside of your home can dictate how you feel about your entire investment. According to the National Association of Realtors’ Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 43 percent of home buyers reported convenience to work as a
Real Estate Matters Jerry White reason for choosing a particular home. This indicates that your home location can impact your whole way of life, and elements like walkability and driving distance to schools, work and fam-
ily can be deal breakers when looking for the home of your dreams. This is why it’s important to do your homework before you go out to look at options. Here are some tips in preparation of your search to
make the process run smoothly and ensure that your new home will be the perfect fit for your needs. ■ Surf the web. These days it’s easier than ever to research neighborhoods on the web, but wouldn’t it be nice to see where a home for sale is located in relation to significant places in your life? Spokes, a new tool on KingThompson.com, helps home buyers get distance and travel times (driving, biking
or walking) between listings and other key destinations of choice. ■ Don’t get discouraged. The house of your dreams may not exist in the perfect location, but don’t be too quick to say no to a fixer upper. If the price is right, consider larger renovations like additions or knocking down a wall to create the open layout you desire. ■ Get acquainted. Spend a day in the neighborhood that you are considering making
a move to. Test out the commute time to work, take a walk to nearby businesses and schools, and chat with neighbors on the block. By doing this you can kill two birds with one stone – scope the location and get a feel for its personality. Jerry White is executive vice president of operations for Coldwell Banker King Thompson and past Realtor of the Year for the Columbus Board of Realtors.
