Community Market Day
Many attracted to citywide garage sale Upper Arlington’s Community Market Day will have people in the streets shopping for bargains throughout the day. Local businesses are able to benefit from the additional foot traffic in the city while residents will be able to clear out their garages and make some extra cash. As the chamber strives to add value to the community and join all occupants together, we will gladly welcome the enthusiastic crowd May 12 who will come to visit local b usiness sidewalk sales and residential streets and to do some Saturday shopping. Not only will individuals of the community profit, but some of the local businesses we hope will once again see extra customers walking through their doors. This type of event is a great way to show the rest of Columbus all that UA has to offer. As the chamber strives to improve the quality of life and maintain the vitality of the community, we are thrilled to provide events such as this so others can regularly be reminded of what our great city we have. We are looking for the event to have an even greater turnout this year. Striving to improve upon the community event, we invited members and residents to participate in a focus group held last June. We look their valuable feedback and worked to implement those suggestions this year. We would like to thank all those that participated last year that made this event so successful and look forward to an even more exciting event May 12th. It is important for our chamber to continuously look at ways to promote our community and maintain the success of our thriving business environment. Chamber Community Celebration a success The Chamber Community Celebration was held March 2, at the University Plaza Hotel and offered attendees quite an experience. A mix of music, provided by the Take Five Band, inspired bidding on 75 silent auction items during the business expo and social networking portion of the event. As dinner began, guests were transported in and around Upper Arlington by a virtual train ride and treated to the skit, “The Music Man,” provided by some members of the chamber board and a guest passenger. “Wow, now that is what I call entertainment,” said Becky Hajost, chamber president. “I would like to thank Edie Blough, Rick Dumas, Tony Maccaluso, Doug Ryan, Susan Toothman, Wes Newhouse, guest passenger Michelle Rapp, and our conductor Charlie Groezinger for making this skit a success.” Hajost said she is very grateful to be the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce president and went on to share with guests why she feels this is an important time of year to share the goals, accomplishments and value of investment. The Markets
Jobs are key to support stock market An important key to support the stock market is starting to fall into place. You may have guessed that key is jobs. Last week, the Labor Department reported an increase of 227,000 new jobs in February. Over the past six months, 1.2 million new jobs have been created — the highest six-month total since 2006. More jobs could lead to more spending, which could boost corporate sales, earnings, and, possibly, stock prices. While the recent employment numbers look pretty good, leave it to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to rain on the parade. In testimony to Congress on Feb. 29, he said, “Notwithstanding the better recent data, the job market remains far from normal: The unemployment rate remains elevated, long-term unemployment is still near record levels, and the number of persons working parttime for economic reasons is very high.” On a different note, last week marked the anniversary of the
March 9, 2009, stock market low. Since the low: • The S&P 500 index has risen just over 100 percent • Corporate JIM operating earnHYRE ings per share have risen just under 100 percent • Corporate revenue per share has risen a meager 1 percent Source: Barron’s So how can corporate earnings nearly double while corporate revenue barely budges? The answer: cost cutting – and a big chunk from whacking jobs. Though we’ve added over a million jobs in the past six months, we’re down about six million jobs from the peak, according to Barron’s. The good news is the spurt in job growth may suggest that corporations have about reached the limit of cutting jobs and now have to add staff to support even small gains in revenue growth.
Weekly focus – How to innovate Some of the most innovative new ideas are developed by simply connecting an existing idea to something new, says author Jonah Lehrer. For example, the Wright Brothers were bicycle manufacturers whose first plane was akin to a bicycle with wings. Johannes Gutenberg used his knowledge of wine presses to create the printing press. The founders of Google took the existing idea of ranking the importance of academic articles by the number of citations and applied it to their search engine algorithm. The result – web pages that have lots of other web pages linking to it tend to score high in a Google search. The next time you need to come up with a creative solution to a problem, try taking an idea from an unrelated field and apply it to your situation. It might become the next billion-dollar idea. Real estate trends
Sunshine, warmer weather and real estate signs The Upper Arlington real estate market is off to a nice start this year. A little sunshine and warmer weather will always bring an increase in residential sales. Pre-spring listing activity has started early, with 135 single-family homes on the market and 51 condominiums. Closing volume continues to be strong and has already surpassed last year by some 25 percent or more. Through mid March, Upper Arlington has posted 68 successful closings and the pipeline is full with 82 properties pending. Far better than last year! In years past, 70 percent of the home sales in Upper Arlington have been below $350,000. As of mid March 2012, 43 percent of the properties in contract are listed at or below $250,000 and 11 of the 82 properties pending are listed at or above $500,000 (approximately 13.4 percent). The first quarter seems to be typical for our local market, with the possibility of the above $500K mar-

ket showing improvement. This price range has been slower in the past few years, so the increase in activity is DOUG receiving a warm welRYAN come. The new build market continues to struggle nationally and locally. Builder Magazine and Housing Intelligence state that the Columbus, Ohio, market new homes sales declined year-overyear based on November 2011 numbers and economists are speculating that the market may be weakening. The national resale market continues to be influenced by foreclosures and real estate owned (REO) sales. Of all existing home sales, foreclosures and REO sales accounted for 40.3 percent of sales. The upside is that pricing has be-
come more in line with market demand and the rates, although accused of being artificial, are assisting with affordability. The waters are a bit calmer in our local area, supporting the theory that “Real Estate is Local.” Empty out those old closets, garages and attics on May 12 and participate in the citywide garage sale, Community Market Place.
