A note from the membership desk Since 1977, the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce (UAACC) has supported the growth and development of the UA area community. The value of your UAACC memberships lies in the relationships you develop, the connections you make and the opportunities taken advantage of through your time spent with other members. In 2011, members were given the opportunity to meet decision-makers and potential clients at various programs and events throughout the year. As a member of the chamber, your circle of influence is more than 400 businesses and 900 individuals strong. The chamber is a working organization shaped by volunteers and staff dedicated to the primary goal of ensuring the growth and development of our members, as well as the economic vitality of UA and a high quality of life for all of our citizens. As the chamber looks forward to 2012, we hope to expand our

New membership director Debbie Segor, a Florida native, has lived in Upper Arlington since 2005. Segor brings more than 12 years of marketing communications, event management and technical writing experience to her job at the chamber. Segor recently finished a three-year term volunteering with the Pleasure Guild of Nationwide Children’ s Hospital (NCH), helping to raise money for the pediatric and palliative care program at NCH. For two years, Segor served on the Pleasure Guild’s board as the events chair, managing fundraising events. Segor is a graduate of the University of Missouri - Columbia. She and her husband are raising their two children in Upper Arlington. Segor is dedicated to growing the membership of the chamber and helping local businesses expand their marketing reach. reach within the business community by increasing membership. We are focused on reaching out to established and emerging businesses that have chosen to reside in Upper Arlington. With the establishment of our tiered

level of membership, we’ve successfully increased membership as members were able to select the investment level that fit their business needs. The chamber will continue to work with current members to maximize their membership

benefits, and will focus on membership level conversion as we guide members to higher levels of membership to meet their ever-changing business requirements. 2011 has been a successful year for the chamber, as we have hosted a variety networking and community events and programs to help members make valuable business connections. Popular events include the Taste of UA,Ask the Expert series,Business Networking Exchange lunches, Early Bird Worm Hunt, the Chamber’s Holiday Lunch, Ribbon Cuttings, Gold Classic at OSU, the Community Marketplace Event, 100 Best Gift Ideas program, etc. Excitement is building as we plan for our March 2, 2012, annual celebration event whose theme is “Get on Board.” Members and the community will be invited to celebrate the economic vitality of Upper Arlington. As we look at what makes our chamber successful, we must acknowledge

our committees, which are the backbone of how work gets done at the chamber. Our committees are made up of members who volunteer their time to advance the core mission of the organization. Committees are a great way to get your membership voice heard. Our committees include Business Development, Ambassador/Membership, Older Adult Resource Group, Public Relations, Retail/Economic Development, Business Advocacy, Community Marketplace, Young Professionals, to name a few. As we move into the new year, we hope that members who haven’t already done so will join a committee and get engaged with the work of the chamber. Membership in the chamber is about you. Be a part of the excitement and growth of the business community. Get on board with the chamber in 2012. Debbie Segor is the membership director of the UA Chamber of Commerce.

UA Fire Division offers winter emergency preparedness tips The Older Adult Resource Group (OARG), a committee of the UAACC, is dedicated to promoting a dignified, healthful quality of life for older adults by advocating for vital services, offering lifelong learning activities and being an accessible and trusted community resource for seniors in the Upper Arlington area. OARG will host a spring symposium on April 19, 2012, with the theme, “Be Prepared,Your Future is Now.” The goal of the symposium is to help older adults prepare for a variety of life events and situations. As the holidays approach and the weather gets colder and more unpredictable, OARG partnered with the Upper Arlington Fire Division to develop some helpful tips for being prepared for a winter emergency.

A winter storm can leave hundreds, possibly thousands, of people stranded, straining food, water and shelter resources for all emergency response and support agencies. Upper Arlington older adults can help in these situations by becoming more self-sufficient should they become isolated at home. When considering how to prepare for emergencies, think about the people in your neighborhood and how you can work together. The first people to assist in an emergency are often your neighbors and friends. Planning for water To prepare the safest and most reliable emergency supply of water, it is recommended you purchase a 3-10 day supply of commercially bottled water per perSee UA FIRE, page 6

From a member’s perspective — Fifth Third Bank Fifth Third Bank prides itself on being a good corporate citizen in the communities it serv es. Known as a diversified financial services company headquartered in Cincinnati, Fifth Third has three locations in Upper Arlington — on Fishinger Road, Henderson Road and Northwest Boulevard. Fifth Third has been a member of the chamber since the chamber’s inception in 1977,and Clark Pore, vice president and district manager at the Fifth Third Fishinger Road branch, is just as committed to the chamber in 2012. Fifth Third is a lead sponsor of the chamber’s 2012 Taste of UA event. “Fifth Third is committed to being active in the community and is excited about the visibility that the Taste affords to the bank,” Pore said. “We pride ourselves on giving back to the community. The Taste allows us to get to know the people and businesses that are in UA.”

Clark Pore is the vice president and district manager at the Fifth Third Fishinger Road branch.

Pore views Fifth Third’s chamber membership as invaluable because of the visibility and networking opportunities the chamber delivers to its members. Fifth Third is focused on building relationships with its clients and interacting within the community, and one way to do that is to network with chamber members at various events offered by the

chamber. “You never know when your chamber membership will help you,” Pore said. “Maybe it will be an opportunity where you can help a member or they can help you. It could be on a b usiness level or even on a personal level. The networking opportunity is just amazing.” Pore said he also is e xcited about being able to reach members through the blogging section of the chamber’s updated website. “To be able to sit in your office and reach out to members through this blog is another great networking resource for chamber members,” he said. “It’s members like Fifth Third that give us the ability to have a greater reach as an organization that impacts the community and the region,” said Becky Hajost, chamber president. For more information about Fifth Third bank, visit www. 53.com.
