Annual event expands …

The Taste of Upper Arlington expands to include “local music and local food” The Taste of Upper Arlington is this summer’s premier outdoor food festival showcasing the diversity of the Upper Arlington area dining community. The delicious array of food served at the Taste of UA is complemented by music and exciting activities for the whole family. For the past 19 years, Upper Arlington’s beautiful Northam Park has been the home to one of the area’s largest food festivals.

“From that whirlwind beginning in 1993, the Taste of UA has continued to grow, becoming the versatile and very successful event that it is today because of the contribution by many in the community. The Taste of UA celebrates a “local taste” and serves as the foundation for a year-round community effort to nurture and grow our local area businesses,” said Becky Hajost, UA Chamber president.

Brought to you by the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce (UAACC), the Taste of UA will be held on Thursday, August 9th from 3:30 pm – 8:30 pm come rain or shine. Festival attendees will be delighted by the tasty variety of food vendors participating in this year’s Taste of UA. Some of the returning food vendors include Dave’s Dogs and More, Schmidt’s of German Village, Giuseppe’s Italian Ice, City Barbecue, Leslie’s Creperie, The Wine Bistro, Mojo TaGo, Caffe DaVinci, and Great Harvest Bread Co. to name just a few.

The Taste also will host several new food vendors this year including Nicola Restaurant and Bar, The Oilerie Columbus, Schakolad Chocolate Factory, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Subs and many more.

While there will be new vendors and bands at this year’s Taste of UA, the festival will once again showcase specialty craft beers at the Bier Garden which is expanding in size this year, and a highlight of the festival is always the annual Taste of UA food contest in which all food vendors are invited to participate. Once again, the Buckeye Mobile Tour will bring the “Buckeye Experience” to the Taste by providing interactive games and inflatables that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

working together over the next few weeks to fill the remaining time slots. “We already have two-thirds of the festival filled with quality local musical acts…the music we have scheduled so far will range from the original post-grunge, Seattle sound of Central Planners to the classic rock covers and stage show of Good Company. Do You Want To Be A Food Judge?

New: We are excited to announce that one lucky person will be chosen to sit on the food judging panel. All you have to do is contact the Chamber and submit your name and contact information. Your name will be entered into a random drawing. The winner will be notified on Thursday, August 2nd. The competition winner will join a panel of celebrity food judges to taste and judge the food submitted by participating vendors in three judging categories: appetizer, entrée and dessert.

Entertainment Although the UAACC has always had entertainment at the Taste of U.A., this will be the first year for what is shaping up to be a home-grown music festival. Acts will start as early as 3:30 pm on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the west end of Northam Park.

VMS/Vaughan Music Studios is the official music sponsor of the Taste of UA, and will manage the music production and programming during the event. VMS is a music instruction, performance and recording studio. Lessons are offered in guitar, bass, piano, voice, songwriting, performance focus, recording, and artist development.

“We are very excited to be a sponsor and to support local music. There’s so much talent in the community, and we are happy to be able to provide a stage for one of the most enjoyable annual community events of Upper Arlington,” says Owner, Cindy Vaughan.

Your Legal Questions Answered

What are financial and healthcare Powers of Attorney, and a Living Will, and do I really need any of them?

These are legal documents that are relatively easy and inexpensive to prepare, and, yes, most people want, need, and will benefit from them.

A financial Power of Attorney is a legal document you sign in which you appoint someone, usually a spouse or child, to handle your finances if you are ever temporarily or permanently unable to handle them yourself. Typically this would be in the event of a catastrophic debilitating medical event such as a stroke which leaves you temporarily unable to sign your checks, but could also be in the event of a catastrophic event which leaves you unconscious or comatose. This Power of Attorney would allow your appointed person to then sign your checks to pay your bills if you are unable. And, since you decide what terms to include in the Power of Attorney, you decide just how much authority to give this person to handle your finances if you are unable.

A healthcare Power of Attorney is also a legal document you sign in which you appoint someone, again usually a spouse or child, to make your healthcare decisions for you if you are ever temporarily or permanently unable to make those decisions yourself.

Again, this would typically be in the event of a catastrophic debilitating

medical event such as a stroke which leaves you temporarily unable to make informed decisions about your healthcare, but could also be in the event you are rendered unconscious or comatose.

This Power of Attorney would allow your appointed person to discuss your medical condition with healthcare providers, make decisions regarding your healthcare, and consent to your medical treatment. Again, since you decide what terms to include in this Power of Attorney, you decide just how much authority to give this person to make your healthcare decisions if you are unable.

A Living Will is also a legal document you sign, but in it you specifically instruct your medical providers and family members what type of medical care you want to receive if you are ever unable to express your wishes. This would also be in the event you are rendered permanently unconscious and in a terminal medical condition. Most people direct in their Living Will that if they are ever in this condition that they want only that level of care necessary to keep them comfortable and pain free, and not any heroic short term treatment.

Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage House For the past five years, Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage House has been a mainstay of the Taste of Upper Arlington. Attendees of the 19th Annual Taste of UA will once again get to feast on Schmidt’s legendary delectables such as their Bratwursts, Bahama Mama’s and those divine Jumbo Cream Puffs.

Owner Andy Schmidt says that “the Schmidt family grew up in UA on Brandon Road and participating in the Taste is like a coming home party for the fourth-generation family members

“The Schmidt’s Cream Puff won best dessert last year [in the Taste of UA food contest]. It’s incredible how receptive the judges where when we offered them all our Puff for a Year Gift Certificates,” Schmidt joked.

“Schmidt’s is looking forward to a great Taste again in 2012!” And so is the Chamber.

THE MARKETS

Is there a bubble in the bond market?

As you know, interest rates are near record lows and that hurts savers who were used to receiving relatively high and mostly risk-free income on their savings. For example, back in 2007, 10-year Treasuries yielded about 5 percent, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Last week, the yield was down to about 1.6 percent.

Since bond prices move inversely to yield, this means as yields moved to near record lows, bond prices moved to near record highs. And, now, some analysts are asking if bond prices have reached bubble territory, according to Bloomberg.

One of the most recent clear-cut cases of a bubble was the technology boom of the late 1990s. Unfortunately, that was followed by the technology stock bust of the early 2000s. You may recall that bubble was based on greed as investors clamored to get in on the internet frenzy and make some “easy” money.

But, today’s peak in the bond market is just the opposite. It’s based on fear, not greed. Due to economic uncertainty, investors have jumped into bonds to preserve their money and this fear-based demand for bonds has pushed prices up and yields down, according to Bloomberg.

So, can a bubble be based on fear or are bubbles just reserved for greeddriven extremes? In reality, we’re not as concerned about the definition of the bubble as we are about the possible unwinding of the bubble.

The technology bubble of the late 1990s and the strong bond market of today are great examples of two things that can drive markets to extremes – greed and fear. In the end, whether driven by greed or fear, extreme move-
