Letter from the Director

Welcome 2014 marks the 48th time we have gathered and celebrated creativity at our City’s signature event. We are honored to be a part of Upper Arlington’s holiday weekend. The Festival is the largest event we produce, but it is not all we do. Beyond this event we also offer, in partnership with the Cultural Arts Commission and UA Arts, a variety of programs in the arts including: Arts in Community Education; Arts in Community Spaces; Concourse Gallery visual arts exhibits; Music in the Parks free summer concerts; hosting a diverse selection of theatrical productions and performance camps that take place at a variety of sites including community parks, gathering places and classrooms.

A large community event like the annual arts festival helps us fulfill our mission of fostering and encouraging the development of the arts in our community and the preservation of the community’s cultural heritage. Because the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival is a City of Upper Arlington sponsored event its funding comes from the overall budget of the Cultural Arts Division which is appropriated from the City’s budget. Each year we nurture relationships and develop sponsorships to help make art experiences like this possible.

Our most critical resource is our community’s appreciation for the arts. In Upper Arlington we estimate nearly half of our budget is

CULTURAL ART DIVISION raised through donations, grants and inkind contributions. This year our festival is presented by David D. Dygert. David has been a part of the arts here in Upper Arlington for many years and served in a variety of ways: as a Cultural Arts Commissioner; an art volunteer and most recently a corporate friend of the arts through his sponsorship of the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts festival.

David D. Dygert reveals, “It’s important for the synergy of business and community that those who benefit from the community support the community. In these times of consolidating services and limited resources it is even more important to support the greater good.” We’re grateful for the support of community members like David D. Dygert whose support helps us offer great art events for a great community.

Thank you to our volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event. Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. These vital positions include artist registration, booth sitting, set up and tear down of the site, pick up and delivery of artwork for patrons, all while making new friends and enjoying the festival. The range in age and interests of the volunteers vary from students to seniors and creates a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks. The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are grateful for each individual who chooses to become a part of the art this Labor Day as a volunteer.

Facts and Figures: The Festival is an incredible undertaking and we are amazed each year at the incredible ingenuity involved in its success. Here then is the Festival by the numbers: 11 months to plan; 15 members of a dynamic team to coordinate; 3 jurors to choose 200 artists from some 350 applicants; 13 city departments involved in every aspect of the event; 249 volunteers and 20,000 visitors supporting the arts.

PERFORMANCES Every year the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival showcases a variety of talented performing artists. These quality performances echo the diversity and talent shown throughout the festival. Unplug from it all and discover new music with the whole family. There are two performance stages at this year’s festival. Look for entertainment on the Arts Activities’ Stage for children and adults, as well as the UA Performance Stage.

T-Shirt This year’s Festival t-shirt was designed by our Cultural Arts Coordinator, Amy McQuillin. Amy comes to us from CCAD where she graduated with a BFA in Advertising & Graphic Design with a minor in Art Therapy. Amy is a “designer who enjoys being able to think outside the box and produce simple and colorful products.”

We are excited to have Amy’s energy in the Cultural Arts Division; she is a valued member of our team. Be a part of the art and purchase a t-shirt for $10 in the Central Information Tent.

Coordinating Committee Be a part of the art and join our Coordinating Committee. Our dynamic group of volunteers, who plan the Festival, begin monthly meetings in February and organize everything from jurying the artists who participate to booking the bands.

The Coordinating Committee also selects the refreshment vendors, the art activities and works with staff to make sure everything runs smoothly

Emerging Artists Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their careers as festival artists, the Emerging Artists’ Program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. In a supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically, through a mentoring program.

Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country.

Ellen Knolls Media: Painting Emerging Artist Booth #e185 This collection is inspired by my love of color and hats. This process gives me a fun freedom in my work. Balancing color and texture I feel gives the pieces a Modern yet fun “feel”. I play around with different tools including brushes that give a different texture and stroke in the finished product.

Jerrica Fields Media: Jewelry Emerging Artist Booth #e199 My love of detail and rhythmic repetition led me to wire crochet. My work is a combination of the delicate elegance of lace with the durable strength of metal. Each piece is lightweight but resilient. I crochet jewelry using both sterling and copper wire and a variety of metal hooks.

Kristi Amick Media: Mixed Media 2D Emerging Artist Booth #e186 Kristi Amick uses acrylics, collage and bold graphic texts to create quirky artworks reminiscent of her life as a wife, mother and art educator. Femininity, florals, and everyday musings are captured in a cheery and whimsical fashion, which playfully illustrate your mind’s visual thoughts and true beauty of womanhood.

Elaine Clapper Media: Ceramics Emerging Artist Booth #e200 I enjoy the contrast of simple traditional shapes with loose flowing glaze. My overlapping glazes are dipped using some wax resist. Both red series and blue series, use one textured glaze creating a sense of fluidity. The brown glaze consistent in both creates contrast of color and controlled vs. spontaneous.

Best of Show Awards Each year at the Arts Festival’s, two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards.

Thank you to jurors Christine Guillot Ryan, artist and Marcia Evans, owner Marcia Evans Gallery, for your thoughtful review of the artists participating in the Festival in 2013. The Judges select four winners– best of show, first place, second place and third place. The Awards Presentation takes place on the main stage around 12:30 p.m.

Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year award-winning festival artists will receive original artwork created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966.

Congratulations to the 2013 award recipients: Best of Show Carol Snyder, Ceramics Booth #169(2014) My influence is nature and the landscape. Fields and horizon lines play a significant role in my work and the patterns, textures and rhythms in them, whether natural or man-made. I use the vessels’ edges as the vantage point: as if it was the continuous line of the horizon.

Third Place Nicole Vanover, Painting Booth #190(2014) My paintings usually begin with an idea of something I would like to paint. Next I get an image of the subject that I want or set up the still life.

I start with a pencil sketch

on canvas than begin with a “paint sketch” and start on my layers of acrylic paint.

Pre-Festival Jury process The festival, one of Sunshine Artist Magazine’s 14 Contenders for 2014, enjoys the works of some 200 artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication. org. Our jury process, that takes place in March, includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to The Focus Group our jurors Katie Laux, Todd Camp and Eric Rausch for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during jurying this March.

They reviewed the work of more than 300 artists that applied.

Four images, three of work and one of booth, are provided by the artists and reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1-7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be invited, not invited, or put on a waitlist.

How to Get Involved UA Arts is an important contributor to the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division, UA Arts is a Federal tax-exempt nonprofit, educational, organization which promotes the arts in Upper Arlington and supports the work of the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division. UA Arts funds various programming elements for the Cultural Arts Division including The Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, Music in the Parks, Concourse Gallery Exhibits and more.

UA Arts is now a part of the UA Community Foundation http://uacommunityfoundation.com/ Take a leadership role with UA Arts as a member. Members come to the group with a variety of backgrounds and abilities in the arts, business, education, law, finance and as community leaders. They all share a love for the arts and a willingness to help bring the arts to the Upper Arlington community.

It is the diversity of knowledge that keeps the group vibrant and successful.
