Cultural Art Division

Welcome to our 47th festival! We are honored to be a part of Upper Arlington’s holiday weekend. The Festival is the largest event we produce, but it is not all we do. Beyond this event we also offer, in partnership with the Cultural Arts Commission and UA Arts, a variety of programs in the arts including: Arts in Community Education; Arts in Community Spaces; Concourse Gallery visual arts exhibits; Music in the Parks free summer concerts; hosting a diverse selection of theatrical productions and performance camps that take place at a variety of sites including community parks, gathering places and classrooms.

This year I draw your attention to our grass mural. For eleven years we have featured a 75 foot grass mural at Festival created by our Cultural Arts Division Staff and designed and painted by the Streets Division. Each year we challenge ourselves to create a space on the field utilizing the skills and imaginations of our Staff. From the map of the Silk Road in 2006 to work inspired by artists CalvoBono in 2008 and Escher in 2011 to a birthday cake celebrating our 40 years in the arts, the grass mural has inspired visitors each year to take a moment and interact with this expression of creativity. This year the mural is designed to be fully interactive, so take a moment and seek out the Like us on Facebook: grass mural and be a part of the art.

Volunteers

Thank you to our volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event.

Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. These vital positions include artist registration, booth sitting, set up and tear down of the site, pick up and delivery of artwork for patrons, all while making new friends and enjoying the festival. The range in age and interests of the volunteers vary from students to seniors and creates a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks. The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are fortunate and grateful for each individual who chooses to become a part of the art this Labor Day as a volunteer.

How to Get Involved

UA Arts is an important contributor to the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division. UA We Make Art Happen.

Arts is a Federal tax-exempt nonprofit, educational, organization which promotes the arts in Upper Arlington and supports the work of the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division. UA Arts funds various programming elements for the Cultural Arts Division including scholarships, Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, Music in the Parks, Concourse Gallery Exhibits and more. UA Arts is now a part of the UA Community Foundation http://uacommunityfoundation.com/ Consider taking a leadership role with UA Arts as a board member. Board members come to the group with a variety of backgrounds and abilities in the arts, business, education, law, finance and as community leaders. They all share a love for the arts and a willingness to help bring the arts to the Upper Arlington community. It is the diversity of knowledge that keeps the group vibrant and successful.

Coordinating Committee Be a part of the art and join our Coordinating Committee.

Our dynamic group of volunteers, who plan the Festival, begin monthly meetings in January. In July the Coordinating Committee meets with City Staff, the Coordinating Committee’s counterparts, to finalize details of the Festival.

The Art Activities Committee works with the Parks & Forestry Division to layout the site and arrange for the physical needs of the space and supplies. The Artists’ Management Committee works with the Parks & Forestry Division to accommodate artists’ needs and to mark the site for booth space.

The Committee also works with the Logistics Committee to arrange the physical space at Northam Park. The Logistics Committee also works with the Fire Division, the Police Department, Electrical Division and the Streets Division to discuss everything from compliance to

Carol Snyder Ceramics, Booth #53 My influence is nature and the landscape. Fields and horizon lines play a significant role in my work and the patterns, textures and rhythms in them, whether natural or man-made. I use the vessels’ edges as the vantage point: as if it was the continuous line of the horizon.

Sharon Donovan Jewelry, Booth #52 Technique I invented; fabricated silver & gold “frames” woven with beads on silk, or pearls on wire.

Best of Show Awards

Our art consists of wood turnings, with an emphasis on fine art vessels as well as usable birdhouses. All the wood used is gathered by the artists from various sources in Ohio and the Southwest. We use only fallen trees (from storms, etc). We recycle forests into art.

Second Place Mary Ann Crago Mixed Media, 2D Booth #51 My work is contemplative and playful. Some pieces are decorative exploring color, texture and design while others delve into the inner workings of an abstract environment. Over the last year my love of collecting old things morphed with my love for creating and this new collection of work emerged.

Each year at the Arts Festival’s, two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards.

Thank you to jurors Stephanie Sypsa and Mary Gray for your thoughtful review of the artists participating in the Festival in 2012. The Judges select four winners– best of show, first place, second place and third place. The Awards Presentation takes place on the main stage around 12:30 p.m.

Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place receives $250, and third place receives $200.

Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the following year’s Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year awardwinning festival artists will receive original artwork created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966.

Emerging Artists

First-time exhibitors dip their toes into career Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their careers as festival artists, the Emerging Artists’ Program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. In a supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically, through a mentoring program.

Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country.

John Davison, JD Shipengrover Media: Jewelry Emerging Artist Booth #161 UA-based Lab Partners is a design team with 15+ years experience exploring the intersection of art, science and technology.

LP handcrafts necklaces, earrings, bracelets and accessories by melding time-honored artistic techniques with cutting-edge technologies. Drawing on inspiration from ancient and modern sources LP strives to craft fun, wearable art.

Gail Kelley Media: Painting Emerging Artist Booth #162 My job is to capture the character of the pet as the owner will remember the pet when they think of the animal.

Clint Stapleton Media: Painting Emerging Artist Booth #163 I create each painting and am still learning to paint, but I think what we painters try to do is capture a unique scene with a bright light that only the paint can give. The paint is messy, but we work it and demand it stand still. My goal is to capture beauty that is missed or all too often overlooked.

Performance artists showcase diverse talents Every year the Labor Day Arts Festival showcases a variety of talented performing artists. These quality performances echo the diversity and talent shown throughout the festival. There are two performance stages at this year’s festival. Look for entertainment on the Arts Activities Area Stage for children and adults, as well as the UA Performance Stage and Grass Mural Area.

The festival, one of the premier one-day arts festivals in the country enjoys the works of nearly 200 artists representing a variety of media. Artists apply through the digital process available through www.zapplication.org. Our jury process, that takes place in March, includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. Thank you to our jurors Char Norman, Marcia Evans and Alicia McGinty for their thoughtful and deliberate attention during the jurying process.

They reviewed the work of more than 300 artists that applied.

Four images, three of work and one of booth, provided by the artists, are reviewed simultaneously. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1-7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be invited, not invited, or put on a waitlist.

Art Terms | Categories Wood – Original works that are handtooled, machine-worked, turned or carved.

Paper - Paper is simple material. It is essentially a mat held together by the fiber’s roughness, and can be made from almost any fibrous material like wood or recycled paper. The process for making paper was invented in China in the second century A.D., and all paper was made one sheet at a time until 1798.

Enamel - A vitreous, transparent or opaque, protective or decorative coating made from silica (a kind of glass) heated in a kiln or furnace, and fused onto metal (usually copper or gold), glass, or ceramic ware. It is often applied as a paste one layer at a time solidifying in firing as areas of color.

Graphics - Any image that is especially linear in character, such as a drawing, and any image made by or for printmaking or computer imaging.

Glass - A hard material made of silicates and an alkali fuse with other substances. It is brittle, transparent or translucent, and considered to be a super

Oxides fused within or upon molten glass can produce intense colors. Glass was produced in Mesopotamia as early as 2500 BC and the Romans perfected the art of glassblowing more than a thousand years later.

Metal – Includes all non-sculptural, non-jewelry works crafted from metals.

Mixed-media – An artwork that makes use of two or more artistic media, such as ink and pastel or painting and collage that are combined in a single composition.

Fiber - Thread, yarn, or fabric, such as weaving. The materials used to produce a fiber may be natural (cotton, flax, wool, silk, grasses, etc.) or synthetic (nylon, rayon, polyester, etc.)

Basketry – Works made of interwoven cane, rushes, splints or other flexible materials.

Leather – An item made of leather, such as purses, belts, or clothing.

Jewelry - Ornament such as necklaces, bracelets, or rings, typically made of precious metals set with gems or imitation gems.

Painting - Works of art made with paint on a surface. Often the surface, also called a support, is either a tightly stretched piece of canvas or a wood panel.

How the ground (on which paint is applied) is prepared on the support depends greatly on the type of paint to be used.

Photography - A permanent image of objects on light-sensitive surfaces. Louis Daguerre (French, 1787-1851) developed the first permanent photographic images in 1839, having continued the pioneering work of Joseph Niepce. Daguerre’s process is called the daguerreotype.

Sculpture – A three-dimensional work of art. The works may be carved, modeled, constructed, or cast. Sculptures can also be described as assemblage, in the round, and relief, and made in a huge variety of media.

Digital – Image made with the assistance of computers. Digital images are often made with software called drawing, painting, illustrating, and photographic programs.
