New study finds trees to be emitting methane gas t’s time to add gassy trees to the list of climate concerns. According to a new study by Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, diseased trees may be releasing unusually large amounts of methane gas into the air. If the data holds up, it could alter forest management strategies around the world and change the calculations for how much trees are able to offset carbon emissions. “If we’re using forests as a climate mitigation tool, we have to know what
I
we’re getting,’’ said Kristofer Covey, a Ph.D. candidate who worked on the study. “Carbon offsets could be changed somewhat by this.’’ To be sure, the new findings don’t negate the beneficial aspects of trees, which absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. But it may give foresters some pause in thinking about what mix of age and species of trees is ideal for the environment. “There’s methane sneaking out the back door,’’ Covey said, ushering visitors along a hiking trail at the 7,800-acre Yale-Myers
Forest in northeastern Connecticut. “This is a very preliminary study, but there’s a potential for this to be widespread. What we’d like to do is put together a global assessment, looking at a bunch of questions.’’ As with many scientific endeavors, the methane discovery happened by accident. Robert Warren, a former postdoctoral researcher at Yale, was showing some students at the forest how to take tree core samples. Suddenly, one of the trees began to spit out gas. One of Warren’s students decided to
see if the gas was flammable by lighting it, and a moment later, “there was this flame coming out of the tree,’’ said Mark Bradford, an assistant professor of terrestrial ecosystem ecology at Yale. “Robert called me up and asked what the heck was going on.’’ It prompted Yale researchers to study 60 trees at the forest, including common trees such as red maples, red oaks, hemlocks, pines and birches. Some of the trees were located in an upland area of the forest and others came from a wetland area.
Scientists drilled into the trees, plugged the holes with rubber stoppers and used special syringes to extract gas samples. The samples went back to New Haven for analysis. What scientists found was startling: methane concentrations in some cases that were 80,000 times the normal level. Red maples had the highest methane emissions. Also, the rate of emission tripled in the summer when temperatures were warmest. Other big factors were disease and age. The trees that pro-
duced methane were between 80 and 100 years old, and had a common fungal disease known as heart rot. Assuming the methane levels in the Yale study are consistent elsewhere, they would reduce a forest’s overall carbon sequestration benefit by 18 percent. (“Sequestration’’ is simply the intake and storage of the element carbon.) “This doesn’t tell us yet about what’s going on in other places,’’ Covey said. “People don’t realize that trees and forests are increasingly dynamic.’’ –Associated Press

How to correct drainage problems in your garden his is a common issue, especially in new developments where the topsoil has been scraped away and the only thing left behind is compacted clay. There are actually some options. Is the rain just hitting the ground and running off? Then, you need to be building up your lawn to make it healthier so the water is absorbed into the ground. Remember, weeds do not germinate in healthy soil. Lawns can be built up by tilling in organic
T
matter, such as aged compost, aged manure mix, straw, etc. Aeration can also help water soak in. Sometimes it can take several attempts of aeration to see results. Soil softeners can help the ground absorb water. Like aeration, it often requires several applications before results can be seen. French drains are made by digging deep trenches. In the bottom of the trench is placed a layer of rock, followed by black perforated piping covered
with a weed cloth and then covering the piping with rock to the top of trench. French drains are (or can be) complicated issues, so a professional should be consulted to install them. Dry creek beds are beautiful ways to direct excess water to where you want it to go. They are slightly dug out beds or paths, placing landscape fabric in the depression followed by pebbles/gravel/larger rocks. In some cases, the waters path is al-
ready clear in your yard, so use that to your advantage and create a dry creek bed and then landscape around it. It can be a great focal point as well as utility. When working to alleviate drainage problems, keep in mind to route the water to an area that will not pose any further problems. One place is to your curb, but you should check with your development or city regulations first. Should you have a drainage ditch (common in most de-
velopments) bordering one side of your property, route the water to it. Never route drain water to a neighbors property. Of course, if you can’t drain it, use it. Where the water lays, create a bog garden. Plants that will work in such an area are: vinca, spiraea, viburnum, goat’s beard, phlox, ferns (shade), daylilies, irises, bamboo (clumping varieties), red twig or other shrub dogwoods, acorus ogon grass, french pussy
willow, nishiki willow, giant pussy willow, solomon’s seal, liriope, maples, green ash, bald cypress, river birch, elm, white pine, hemlock, sourwood, tulip poplar, blueberry, cranberry, red chokeberry, sambucus, holly, spicebush, oaks, red bud, serviceberry, hostas (shade), anemones, and gaillardia. If you have a really marshy area, check at your local fish store for pond plants. –Cheryl D. Jones, Landsteward.com
US new-home sales rise to match two-year high ales of new homes in the United States rose 3.6 percent in July to match a two-year high reached in May, the latest sign of a steady recovery in the housing market. The Commerce Department said Thursday that new-home sales reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 372,000. That’s the same as in May, which was the
S
highest since April 2010. The report is “the latest in a series of data points suggesting a durable housing recovery is underway,” Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC, a brokerage firm, said in a note to clients. In the past 12 months, sales have jumped 25 percent. Still, the increase is from a historically low
level. New-home sales remain well below the annual pace of 700,000 that economists consider healthy. The housing market is making a modest but steady recovery in part because homes are more affordable: Mortgage rates have fallen to near-record lows. Housing prices are about one-third lower than at the peak of the housing
bubble in 2006. Those trends have helped lift sales of both new and previously occupied homes. Sales of previously occupied homes increased in July from June, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. Sales have jumped 10 percent in the past year. Other recent reports also point to a recovery. Home prices have begun rising na-
tionwide. They increased 2.2 percent in May from April, according to one leading index. That was the second straight increase after seven months of flat or declining prices. Builders, meanwhile, are growing more confident because they’re seeing more traffic from potential buyers. An index of builder confidence rose to its high-
est level in five years in August. Builders responded by applying for the largest number of building permits in nearly four years last month. They broke ground on slightly fewer new homes in July than in June. But that was after the number of housing starts had reached a 31/2-year high in June. Please see MATCH, pg. 6

nails to connect the plates to the wall studs. These nails are generally 3.25 inches long and the shaft of the nail is about oneeighth inch thick. The studs at each end of the wall need to be perfectly straight. Take your time and find these true studs. Using straight studs at the corners allows you to connect the walls together easily as you build your shed. It’s critical that the top and bottom plates be the exact same length. When I say exact, I mean it. The
vertical wall studs need to be the same height. Doing this allows you to square up the wall on the ground before you begin to add sheathing to the wall. Before you add the plywood or orientedstrand board sheathing to the wall, you must square up the wall. Failure to do this will cause you great headaches and embarrassment. I chalk a line on the floor and then temporarily toenail the bottom plate to the floor making sure the edge of the bottom plate is just touching
the chalk line. The nails must be driven through the bottom of the plate so that you can remove them after you have the wall sheathing applied to the wall. Once the bottom plate is straight and secure, take out your tape measure and check the diagonal measurements of the wall. You do this by hooking your tape measure to the exact corner of the bottom plate at one end of the wall and stretch it to the corner of the top plate at the other end of the wall. Undoubtedly the
The housing market has a long way to go to reach full health. Some economists forecast that sales of previously occupied homes will rise 8 percent this year to about 4.6 million. That’s still well below the 5.5 million annual sales pace that is considered healthy. One trend holding back sales is that many people are still having difficulty qualifying for home loans.
Banks have tightened credit standards for mortgages, according to a report last month by the Federal Reserve.
With the wall square, it now be-
comes easy to apply the wall sheathing. If the wall is not square, or the bottom and top plates are not straight, it becomes very problematic to apply the sheathing. The wall sheathing is nailed to the wall studs with 8-penny nails. I prefer to use nails that are ring shanked. These have tiny ridges on the shaft of the nail that provide more surface area and create better holding power. Once the sheathing is applied, you can remove all the temporary nails that were holding the wall to the floor. It’s time to tilt
the wall into position. Be sure you have plenty of help when you tilt up the wall. It will be heavy. If it’s windy, be very careful. The wind can easily blow the wall over. Brace the wall once it’s raised up to prevent it from being blown over by the wind! You can watch a wall-building video, along with other tips, at AsktheBuilder.com. Simply type “wall building tip video” into the search engine. Have a question for Tim? Just click the Ask Tim link on any page of the website. –Tribune Media Services
Another factor holding back sales is that there aren’t many newly built homes available. New homes for sale dipped last
month to 142,000, the lowest on records dating back to 1963. A six-month supply is generally considered healthy by econ-
omists. At the current sales pace, it would take 4.6 months to exhaust the July supply. –Associated Press
gardens since kicking off last year. Its mission is to help curb the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic. Cynthia Domenghini of the Vermont-based National Gardening Association said the concept for school gardens
has been around a long time _ her organization has been helping to fund them for around 30 years _ but picked up speed when first lady Michelle Obama broke ground on an herb and vegetable garden at the White House
in 2009. “There’s been an increase in the number of organizations promoting school gardening,” said Domenghini. She said her group doesn’t keep a count of gar-

Though new homes represent only a small portion of the housing market, they have a disproportionate impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to statistics compiled by the National Association of Home Builders. dens in schools, but that about 1,300 youth programs in schools, churches, libraries and other places have registered with it. “Fruit and vegetable gardens are probably most popular, but some grow flowers,” she said. “We see all different types of garden programs.” Todd LoFrese, assistant superintendent for support services for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina, said there’s a
gardening component at nearly all of their 18 schools, ranging from a small herb garden to support a culinary program to a high school with a student-run program that donates produce to needy families. A new elementary school set to open next year has been designed to include garden plots, he said, and will have a rainwater collection system and a green roof with vegetation. “It’s a good way to get families involved and also the community involved,” LoFrese said.
The gardens in his district are funded in a variety of ways, including donations, grants and fundraising from parent groups. In addition to the garden at Moss Haven, the Richardson school district in suburban Dallas has two other gardens at schools and plans for three more, said Phil Lozano, the district’s associate director of facilities services. One of the other gardens in the Richardson district was funded by the district, and the other by a parent-teacher association.
Moss Haven, which gets support, including curriculum materials, from the Heart Association, was made possible by donations, grants and funds from its PTA. Lozano said the goal is for the gardens to reach 100 percent sustainability, which includes composting, and collecting water from sources including rainwater or airconditioning condensation. In the Houston area, the nonprofit Urban Harvest has helped start more than 100 school gardens, training and ad-
vising those who want to start them and in some cases providing a garden educator to give lessons. The organization aims to promote nutrition and respect for the environment, said Carol Burton, its director of youth gardening education. Heading into fifth grade this year at Moss Haven, 10-year-old Natalie Duval is anxious to see what the garden looks like after the summer. Last year, she was
pleasantly surprised when her fourth-grade class taste-tested dips made from garden ingredients including spinach, parsley and cucumbers. “I didn’t think I was going to like it,” she said. “I was like, `Wow, that was pretty good.’ ” “Everybody’s trying to eat better, and if we ate those foods in the cafeteria we’d be healthy,” she said. –Associated Press
