HOW THE LIST WAS COMPILED Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. is a health care research and information company founded in 1991 by a former medical college board chairman and president to help guide consumers to America’s top doctors and top hospitals. Castle Connolly’s established nomination survey, research, screening and selection process, under the direction of an M.D., involves many hundreds of thousands of physicians, as well as academic medical centers, specialty hospitals and regional and community hospitals all across the nation. Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers follows a rigorous screening process to select Top Doctors on both the national and regional levels. Its online nominations process—located at castleconnolly.com/nominations—is open to all licensed physicians in America, who are able to nominate physicians in any medical specialty and in any part of the country, as well as indicate whether the nominated physicians

The result: We identify the Top Doctors in America and provide you, the consumer, with detailed information about their education, training and special expertise in our paperback guides, national and regional magazine “Top Doctors” features and online directories. Doctors do not and cannot pay to be selected and profiled as Castle Connolly Top Doctors. THE VETERAN

QUINN CAPERS IV The Ohio State University cardiologist has been on the list continuously since 2015.

Why cardiology? Although I had known that I would be a doctor since preschool, it was during my high school biology class that I fell in love with the cardiovascular system. I love how the heart, arteries and veins “talk” to each other and cooperate. The most rewarding part of your job? Successfully treating a patient suffering from a massive heart attack … and later seeing that patient enjoying an active, fulfilling life. The proudest moment of your career? It’s very hard to pick one, but I was recently selected “Professor of the Year” by the 2019 graduating class of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. It’s an award indicating that they consider me the most impactful professor in their four years of medical school. Since my passion for teaching is the reason why I left private practice to join an academic medical center 12 years ago, I was incredibly moved by this recognition. You’ve focused on implicit bias in your teaching. What can doctors do to reduce unconscious prejudice ? When a physician has an implicit negative bias related to the patient in front of them, it can lead to misdiagnosis, awkward communication and the withholding of potentially life-saving treatments. Simple strategies that can reduce implicit bias in one-on-one interactions include discussing common identities or interests with the patient (love of music, food, sports teams, etc.); building empathy for the patient by mentally “walking a mile in their shoes.”

THE LONE WOLF

REBECCA BAUM The Nationwide Children’s Hospital physician is the only developmental-behavioral pediatrics specialist on the list.

What is developmental-behavioral pediatrics? Developmental-behavioral pediatrics is a subspecialty of the field of pediatrics. Conditions commonly seen in developmental behavioral pediatrics include autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. … It is a relatively new specialty, and there are only around 700 boardcertified developmental-behavioral pediatricians in the country. We face a significant shortage of developmental-behavioral pediatricians in our region and also nationally.    What would you have been if not a doctor? Starting college, I was interested in food science. I really enjoyed chemistry and was fascinated with how chemistry could be used to make things taste really good! I majored in biochemistry, but then became interested in microbiology, cancer research, medicine and finally … pediatrics.    How has your field changed since you started practicing? I started my career around 20 years ago as a general pediatrician in a small town. We had very few mental health providers in our community, and so I tried to do the best I could for my patients with the resources that we had. Ultimately, that was what got me interested in the field of developmental-behavioral pediatrics. Over the last few years, we’ve seen an alarming increase in symptoms related to anxiety and depression. Many of the kids we see are now struggling with significant mental health issues. Those issues can be particularly difficult to sort out in children with autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disabilities.

MARGUERITE WESTON The OhioHealth sports medicine physician is a newcomer to the list.

What drew you to the Columbus region? I completed my training in Toledo, where I met my husband. We then moved to Oklahoma, where I worked as a team physician with the University of Oklahoma for over six years. My husband’s job then took us to Madison, Wisconsin, where I worked with the University of Wisconsin for over a year. As our children began getting older, it became apparent we needed to return home to Ohio. We always talked about Columbus being our choice once we moved back. I am from the Cleveland area, and my husband is from Marion. What’s the most common injury you’re seeing among athletes? The majority of what we see is overuse injuries. In this day and in this community, children are playing year-round, on multiple teams, and are often single-sport athletes. We provide a lot of education and teach young athletes how to prevent injuries.   What advice do you find yourself giving the most? For my athletes, I discuss injury prevention early and often. It is an imperative focus that really makes a difference— although you may never know, since they don’t get injured! Nutrition is another key area of focus. I talk to my athletes and non-athletes alike about nutrition: Sometimes it is about weight loss, other times about performance. I am currently completing training in functional medicine, which lends itself well to my sports medicine and nutrition focus.

ZOCHOWSKI PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY Choosing a provider for aesthetic or reconstructive procedures can be a daunting task. Many offices focus exclusively on surgical or non-surgical options, not both, meaning their clients have fewer options or are forced to search elsewhere for a solution that meets their needs. This is not the case at Zochowski Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. “My practice is all-inclusive, offering a full spectrum of options—including both non-surgical and surgical without bias,” says Dr. Christopher Zochowski. Committed to research, education and advancing the art of plastic surgery, Zochowski has extensive training in cosmetic surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, body contouring, fat reduction, fat grafting, cosmetic lasers and injectable treatments for facial rejuvenation. He also is one of the few surgeons in the world to offer a surgical option to treat migraines. For staff at Zochowski Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, finding a personalized approach to each patient’s specific needs is key to developing a comprehensive treatment plan that can deliver transforming results. To help achieve this goal, Zochowski consistently seeks to offer the latest in technology and services to his patients. “I always enjoy implementing new technology into my practice,” he says. “I have many friends across the United States that are plastic surgeons, and we often discuss new technologies and seek to offer our patients only those modalities that have been vetted and proven effective. I also attend many meetings in our society to make sure that I am on the cutting edge, and we purchase several new pieces of technology every year.” Among this state-of-the-art technology are the Vectra 3D Imaging System, which measures patients’ bodies and creates

realistic models of expected results; the Visia Complexion Analysis System for analyzing facial skin and recommending treatments; CoolSculpting, also called cryolipolysis, which is a nonsurgical technique to reduce fat in various parts of the body; laser-assisted liposuction; a variety of lasers to combat sun damage and signs of aging; cosmetic injectables like Botox, Kybella and Restylane; and radiofrequency microneedling to treat sagging skin. “This October we will implement CoolTone, which is a recently FDAapproved device that uses magnetic muscle stimulation to tone and firm muscles,” Zochowski explains. The practice also was chosen to be a trial center for a new external laser for body contouring and skin tightening, he adds. “The odds are, if a patient has a concern, I have the means to make it better.” Zochowski’s impeccable technical skill and artistry, coupled with his passion for innovation in plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine, set him apart from the average provider. His early exposure to medicine while working in his father’s medical practice set the stage for him to pursue medicine as a career, while his inherent artistic talent led him to specialize in plastic surgery. Always striving to exceed expectations, Zochowski uses plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine to restore form and function for his patients, fine-tune their physiques and provide treatments to slow the aging process when genetics, diet and exercise aren’t enough to achieve the desired results. “My patients trust me with their care, their appearance and their hard-earned money; this is a responsibility I take very seriously,” he says. “Building a relationship with my patients to become a trusted, long-term partner in their care and overall wellness is the ultimate goal for me and my team.”

Two other Midwest Allergy physicians—Dr. Jennifer Bullock and Dr. Grace Ryu—have joined Rancitelli and Ortega-Carr on the area’s Top Doctors list. They share that same focus on getting to know a patient and his or her history when creating a care plan. “I find that a patient’s history provides most of the clues in aiding me with the diagnosis,” Ryu says. “I listen, order the necessary tests and hopefully can solve the mystery to provide an individualized plan of action for each of my patients.” Bullock, too, follows a similar approach. “I like to spend a lot of time with my patients to listen and explain test results and different options for management,” Bullock explains. “Everyone is different, and I like to be open-minded, to listen, to understand the concerns of my patients, and to work closely with a patient or family to find the management strategy that is best.”

For more than 35 years, patients have turned to Midwest Allergy to diagnose and manage their conditions. Physicians travel between offices located in Columbus, Hilliard, Mansfield, Newark Chillicothe and Zanesville, bringing their expertise to areas that typically are underserved in these fields. Although Midwest Allergy is among the largest private groups of allergy specialists nationwide, it retains a small-practice feel. Patients typically stay with a single physician throughout his or her time in care, which fosters the best possible doctor-patient relationship. Although physicians differ in methods of practice, they all make a point to put the patient first and treat him or her as MIDWEST ALLERGY part of their families. After a consultation with Dr. James McMahan at Advanced Aesthetic & Laser surgery, most patients are convinced that they’ve found the right place and surgeon for their aesthetic surgery needs. That’s because he and his staff prioritize customized patient interactions. “We believe in the highest quality, customized aesthetic medical and surgical care,” McMahan says. “We pride ourselves in providing the most thorough consultations available.” Larger practices might employ a patient coordinator to handle consultations, but McMahan prefers to do them personally. “Communication is extremely important in the patient-physician relationship, and the best way to do that is to spend a lot of time together,” he explains. McMahan specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, particularly body contouring—breast implants and lifts, tummy tucks, liposuction and thigh lifts—and proce-

ROBERT GEWIRTZ, M.D. Nobody wants to think about who they’d call if they or a loved one is diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. However, the doctor you choose to treat the condition often makes all the difference. “It’s a very technically challenging area. Timing and experience matter,” says Dr. Robert Gewirtz, who has focused on treating aneurysms for much of his 24-year career. “We’re dealing with blood vessels that are only a couple millimeters in size. It’s a high-stakes situation where if you make a mistake, the patient can pay dearly for it. You have to be on your game, focused, attentive and decisive in what you do.” Fortunately for his patients, Gewirtz is Columbus’ most experienced neurosurgeon in the field of aneurysm surgery, and among the most experienced in the state. Practicing at Central Ohio Neurological Surgeons,

which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has given him a wealth of experience. Gewirtz also treats the full spectrum of neurosurgical diseases of the brain and spine. One area he has helped pioneer in Columbus is outpatient surgery of the spine. He is a founding member of Eastwind Surgical, the first outpatient surgery center in Columbus dedicated specifically to spinal surgery and pain. His philosophy when it comes to caring for his patients is centered on high-quality, technologically sophisticated services, delivered with compassion and efficiency. That devotion to ensuring his patients’ wellbeing—along with his extensive experience in the field—both led his colleagues to nominate him as a Top Doctor in neurological surgery. While this isn’t Gewirtz’s first time being named a Top Doctor, he notes that the distinction remains an honor.

REVOLUTIONARY PROCEDURE HELPS CANCER PATIENTS

Several Central Ohio doctors are among few in the nation to provide life-changing treatment. Prostate cancer can be a silent killer. It’s the most common non-skin cancer among men— one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime—but the disease often displays no or negligible side effects, making diagnosis difficult without regular screenings. Until recently, men with localized prostate cancer could only choose between radiation and surgery to treat the disease, which often lead to side effects like issues with urinary control and sexual dysfunction. Today, those men have another option: High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU. Approved by the FDA in 2015 for prostate ablation, HIFU has been used for more than a decade in other countries. The noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment is able to treat prostate cancer with lower risk of significant side effects.

WHAT IS HIFU? HIFU is a one-time, outpatient procedure that uses highly focused ultrasound energy to heat and destroy cancerous cells in the prostate. It is delivered using a medical device called the Sonablate, which consists of a computer, a transrectal probe and a chilling unit. The probe contains transducers that emit ultrasound energy—this energy provides an image of the prostate, but also can be focused to a central point, resulting in a rapid temperature increase. Think of it as being similar to the way sunlight can be focused through a magnifying glass to burn a hole in a leaf. During HIFU treatments, the Sonablate software allows doctors to see a real-time image of the prostate and plan exactly where to deliver the HIFU energy to destroy only the targeted tissue. Doctors also receive immediate feedback to confirm that the targeted tissue has been eliminated. The Sonablate has special features that allow doctors to see the exact location of the nerves near the prostate that are responsible for helping maintain sexual function. This allows them to avoid hitting these nerves with the HIFU energy, resulting in a significantly lower risk of erectile dysfunction and other side effects when compared to surgery or radiation. HIFU treatment is a one- to four-hour outpatient procedure (depending on the prostate size), and is administered with general anesthesia. Patients undergo a one- to two-hour recovery period at the treatment facility and are often able to resume their normal lifestyles within a few days. In most cases, HIFU is a one-time procedure.

WHO OFFERS HIFU? Nationwide, HIFU is available in 12 cities, including Columbus. Fewer than 40 doctors in the U.S. are qualified to perform HIFU; in Columbus, they include Dr. Rush Patel and Dr. William Bloch, of Central Ohio Urology Group. They offer HIFU to their patients at Central Ohio Urology Surgery Center in Gahanna. “HIFU offers our patients a minimally invasive, nonsurgical, radiation-free treatment option for prostate cancer that effectively preserves quality of life with minimal side effects,” says Dr. Patel, who serves as director of the HIFU program at Central Ohio Urology Group. “It is an ideal treatment for men

with prostate cancer that has been detected early and is likely to be confined to the prostate. Often, we can treat only the part of the prostate that is cancerous, sparing the rest of the prostatic tissue; this is called focal HIFU. In that case, there are even fewer side effects.” The ideal HIFU candidate has localized prostate cancer, PSA levels less than 20, a Gleason score of 7 or less and a prostate Prostate Tissue Ablation volume of less than 40 cc. Other patients may qualify; the best determination can be made by consulting a physician familiar with administering HIFU.

WHO IS HIFU PROSTATE SERVICES? HIFU Prostate Services is a company based in Charlotte, North Carolina, that was founded to provide access to the less-invasive treatment option. Its mission is to deliver the highest quality care, support and technology to patients by partnering with leading urology practices and physicians around the country to offer HIFU with the Sonablate to treat localized prostate cancer. In addition to providing the Sonablate HIFU medical device, HIFU Prostate Services also provides administrative, technical and marketing support for partner physicians and practices. This support includes scheduling, billing and payment collection services, financing options, coordination of medical records, patient educational material and nurse educators.
