Although Midwest Allergy is among the largest private groups of allergy specialists nationwide, it retains a small-practice feel.

Patients typically stay with a single physician throughout his or her time in care, which fosters the best possible doctor-patient relationship. Although physicians differ in methods of practice, they all make a point to put the patient first and treat him or her as part of their families.

“I went into pediatrics first … and one of the reasons I loved pediatrics was because I got to know families,” says Dr. Philip Rancitelli, who completed a pediatric residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital before starting an allergy and immunology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. “I became interested in allergy and immunology through exposure to the field as a resident, and realized that it would still allow me to connect with families. It’s the best of both worlds: I can specialize in a field that really piques my interest, and I can fulfill my desire to create relationships with patients and families.”

Especially interesting to Rancitelli are biologic treatments for allergies and asthma, as well as novel food allergy therapies.

“I anticipate the approval of several peanut desensitization products within the next

year. These therapies will expose the body to small amounts of peanut protein in order to reduce the level of sensitivity and protect against an accidental ingestion,” he explains.

“Life-threatening food allergies control your life, increasing anxiety and stress. Having peace of mind that this type of therapy will protect against an accidental ingestion will be very impactful.”

Rancitelli joined Midwest Allergy in 2004 after the conclusion of his fellowship at Duke University and about a decade after Dr. Debora Ortega-Carr did. In 2018, both were named “Top Doctors” in their fields for the fourth year in a row. And while Rancitelli enjoys the life-changing aspects of allergy management, Ortega-Carr has an affinity for the equally impactful aspects of asthma management.

“I enjoyed taking care of asthmatic patients, both when I was in medical school and as a resident at Henry Ford Hospital, because they seem to recover so well,” she says. “They could be acutely ill one minute, and with the right treatment, they could be feeling great within a few hours.”

Ortega-Carr earned her medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine; she now educates medical students from the school in conjunction with her practice at Midwest Allergy.

“I’ve had the opportunity to teach a little bit more this year, and I’ve found that the more you end up teaching, generally, the better you learn something,” she says. “Teaching allows me to keep thinking about what I know and how to better improve upon that.”

In-house aesthetician Jenna Yousey provides spa-like services, including the HydrafacialMD. “Not many physicians offer HydrafacialMD,” McMahan says. “It’s very unique, because it combines a facial with microdermabrasion, hydrating the skin, infusing antioxidants and more, to deliver a much better facial.”

McMahan’s work has been featured in a number of prestigious, peer-reviewed medical journals, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery and the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He credits his nearly 30 years of practice with giving him the knowledge and expertise necessary to publish his findings.
