From our Executive Director I am pleased to present this 2014/2015 Sunbury Chamber Membership Directory and Community Profile. The Chamber of Commerce Officers and Board of Directors welcome you to Sunbury and the Big Walnut community. Our goal is to promote and expand local businesses through exposure with the resources such as this directory, Chamber meetings which enable networking and involvement with civic causes. Becoming a member of the Chamber gives your business an opportunity to show our community’s residents that you support our area’s economy and are interested in our growth in eastern Delaware County.

We’ve come a long way in our 36 year history and are pleased to have passed the 300 member mark! Our Chamber wants to grow and evolve to meet the community’s needs. We have many great community events that involve minimal amount of volunteer time and create great memories for all who attend and participate. Many families have built traditions going to the Independence Day and Christmas on the Square events, just to name a couple.

Community Commitment & Involvement Chamber Community Expo Each spring the Chamber brings this event to Big Walnut High School to give our business and non-profit members the opportunity to promote themselves to the community. We welcome over 400 visitors to the event each year, and host the Expo with numerous partners to insure the local residents get to see the “Best of Big Walnut!”

Farmers’ Market on the Sunbury Square Rain or shine, each Saturday from 9 am to noon from mid-May to mid-October, the Chamber hosts the Sunbury Farmer’s Market. Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial A fitting tribute to our loved ones who have lost their lives to the war on terrorism, the Fallen Heroes Memorial brings many visitors to Sunbury year–round. Dedicated in 2007, a memorial service is held in July each year so we “never forget.”

Big Walnut Relay For Life Partnering with the American Cancer Society, Big Walnut is proud to host the Relay for Life each June at Big Walnut High School. Following the ceremonial survivor’s lap, the Friday evening festivities kick off the overnight relay for participants to raise funds for cancer research. The closing ceremony on Saturday at noon reflects this huge commitment by our small town.

Big Walnut Friends Who Share Focused on improving the living conditions of residents in the Big Walnut School District, Friends Who Share accepts donations of non-perishable food items and gently used clothing, furniture and household items to give back to those in need, free of charge. Fairs and Festivals Entertain Throughout the Year 4-H and the Fairs Just one of the many commitments this community makes to our youth is through leadership and participation in our local 4-H Clubs and our local fairs. Crafts, livestock and horticultural projects are just a few of what you will see from the Big Walnut youth at the Delaware County and Hartford Fairs.

Sunbury Square Flea Markets & Festivals Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day are all easily recognizable in the Big Walnut community with the presence of the flea markets on the Sunbury Square and the crowds of visitors from all over central Ohio who have come to shop.

The Memorial Day flea market is hosted by the Big Walnut Music & Marching Boosters to raise funds for the schools’ music programs.

Our Chamber hosts the July 4th Independence Day Festival to cover the costs of bringing an amazing fireworks display to the community.

Labor Day belongs to the Sunbury Lions Club, who holds its annual Ox Roast. They serve must-have sandwiches all day, raising funds to do the work of their organization throughout the year.

The business of the Big Walnut Local School District continues to flow as we grow and guide our children into the future. With the addition of the new Rosecrans Elementary in 2010 and the new Middle School in 2011, two former buildings were temporarily closed for cost-saving measures.

The 2012-2013 school year welcomed the reopening of the former middle school as an Intermediate building to house our 5th and 6th graders, as well as the school administrative offices. The 2014-2015 school year will see the reopening of our fourth elementary, Harrison Street, to ease the classroom size of our young students.

REGIONAL ATTRACTIONS

Enjoy the outdoors and more at these local spots With our many growing community attractions it’s getting easier to get in some exercise and quality outdoor time at our public parks and trails!

J.R. Smith Park in Sunbury acts as host to many little league activities and features a baseball diamond, picnic area, updated playground equipment and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club also hosts little league activities. Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter house and baseball diamonds.

Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter house, and a nice playground. McNamara Park, located in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a bike and walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena. The village of Galena is proud of their boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the wildlife and waterlife.

Kinslow Park Disc Golf Course was established in 2005 and recently underwent rehabilitation thanks to the generous support of both the Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club and Village of Sunbury’s Parks Committee. Check the Chamber’s website for local tournaments to enter the family in or just stop by for a relaxing hike through the woods while trying to come in under par. This course continues to be free to the public.

Walking distance from the disc golf course is Freedom Park on Ohio 61 in Sunbury behind Sunbury Church of the Nazarene. This park is a new undertaking by the volunteers at the church, and the initial phase of construction is complete with plans in place to expand the park over the next several years. Feel free to make use of the facility while taking children to team practices or just stop by on a sunny day for a picnic and some playground fun.

REGIONAL ATTRACTIONS The Delaware County Friends of the Trail (DCFT) is actively working to provide a comprehensive series of trails throughout our community.

• The Hoover Scenic Trail was completed in October 2010. It starts at Plumb Rd. in Delaware County between Old 3C Hwy and State Route 3 and runs through the Hoover Nature Preserve featuring a pedestrian bridge overlooking Hoover Reservoir with incredible bird watching opportunities.

• The Big Walnut Community Trail is a 0.6 mile surfaced trail in Sunbury that follows an old railroad bed from a trestle across Old 3C Highway to Big Walnut Elementary School. The trailhead is located just above Columbus Street just south of S. Vernon Street.

• The Galena Brick Trail is a 900 ft. trail that follows an old rail bed behind the former Galena Shale and Brick factory north, between the Big and Little Walnut Creek.

• The Genoa Township Trail runs from Mt Royal Avenue to Plumb Road along an old railway down State Route 3. It connects to the Westerville Trail system to the south and ends to the north where the DCFT has worked with Delaware County to secure a Clean Ohio Fund grant to continue the trail from Plumb Road towards the Village of Galena.

Athletic associations in the Big Walnut community consist of the Girls Softball Association, Junior Baseball Association, Soccer Association, Youth Athletic Association, Youth Basketball Association and the Big Walnut Athletic Boosters.

Receiving an “Excellent” designation from the Ohio Department of Education since 2005, Big Walnut has designed a diverse and rigorous curriculum to prepare students for future success. Special education and gifted programs meet the unique needs of learners at all levels, while expecting excellence from all.

Big Walnut athletic teams participate in the highly competitive Ohio Capital Conference (OCC). The OCC currently sponsors 25 interscholastic sports for 32 member schools that compete in four divisions. Big Walnut has a well-deserved reputation as a resilient and winning athletic program.

There are numerous opportunities for students and adults to pursue higher education at one of the many nearby colleges or universities. Among the choices are Otterbein University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Columbus State Community College, Mt. Challenging high school students to apply learned skills to the workforce, preparing them for higher education and offering the opportunity to earn college credits makes the Career Center a viable choice for many local students. Also offered are many programs that prepare adults to enter into, compete and advance in a changing and global work environment.

Its mission is to create a welcoming environment for all to pursue knowledge and cultivate interests. To that end, the library offers engaging, high-quality, family-centered programs for all ages, as well as a collection of approximately 100,000 books, movies, and music recordings. The library also has ebooks, audiobooks and online magazines and shares resources with over one hundred other libraries throughout Ohio. Library staff are available to assist patrons with their research needs, and KnowItNow, Ohio’s 24/7 live reference service, is available for individuals who want to text or chat with a librarian. Great organizations offer great events Big Walnut Area Historical Society

Ohio Fallen Heroes’ Memorial

BWAHS members conduct many historical activities out of the 1820 Myers Inn Museum. Annual activities include guided tours, open houses, craft day for children, tours for 3rd graders, Heritage Day, Mother’s Day tea, special luncheons and candlelight dinners.

Members also participate in Harlem Days, Christmas on the Square and Civil War Days. BWAHS recently dedicated the General Rosencrans equestrian statue on the Sunbury Square, honoring this local Civil War general. Visit http://BigWalnutHistory.org.

This memorial was established in 2005 by several local Veterans that wanted to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by defending our freedom in the Global War on Terrorism. Delaware County Fair This annual event takes place in September with many featured events. From rides, fair food and 4H competitions, this fair is known for the historic Little Brown Jug. The “Jug” race first took place back in 1937 and is a showcase for harness racing.

The Hartford Fair Located in the northwest corner of Licking County, the Hartford Fair is unique in comparison to other Ohio fairs, being the only “independent” fair in the state. Because Licking County does not have a county fair, the Junior Fair includes exhibits from Licking, Delaware and Knox counties. Variety is the spice of life Village of Sunbury sunburyvillage.com Established in 1816, Sunbury surrounds the intersections of US-36/ OH-37 and State Route 3 and is the central hub of Big Walnut. With a population of approximately 4,500, the village continues to grow rapidly, yet it maintains its small town atmosphere. Sunbury provides plentiful shopping, quality health-care facilities and exceptional educational institutions.

Village of Galena galenaohio.org Originally settled by soldiers from the American Revolution, Galena is located directly south of Sunbury. Galena is a thriving community and has quaint shops, restaurants, businesses and the Hoover Reservoir boardwalk, all located near the Galena square.

Berkshire Township berkshiretwp.org The first group of settlers arrived in Berkshire in 1804, and the original township was founded in 1806. Just west of Sunbury and near the I-71 interchange, Berkshire offers professional-caliber golf clubs, luxury condominiums and will welcome new shops and additional housing within the next few years.

Genoa Township genoatwp.com Founded in 1816, Genoa is located south of Galena and borders Westerville and the Polaris area. With the scenic Hoover Reservoir and a portion of the Ohio to Erie Trail, Genoa attracts many wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts.

Harlem Township harlemtwp.com Harlem was formed in 1810 and is located in the southeast portion of the Big Walnut area. With more than half of its 27 square miles remaining primarily agricultural, the rural character of this township remains in the forefront.

Kingston Township kingstontwp.org Becoming a township in 1813, Kingston lies in the northwest section of the Big Walnut area and still remains primarily rural.

Here you will find the birthplace of Major General William Starke Rosecrans, a Union general in the Civil War.

Porter Township portertwp.org This township, formed between 1826 and 1827, is about 26 square miles and home to about 1,800 residents. It remains primarily agricultural and is home to the historic Chambers Road covered bridge, the only covered bridge remaining in Delaware County.

The township is noteworthy as being the home of Sunbury’s crystalline erratic. Deposited by a glacier, it is the largest crystalline erratic in the area and measures 22’ long, 8’ wide, and 8’ high.
