We welcome over 400 visitors to the event each year and host the Expo with numerous partners to ensure the local residents get to see the “Best of Big Walnut!”

It is best known for hosting “Sunbury Sizzle & Sounds” held the first weekend after school begins in August, with an all-day lineup of local music, kids’ zone and beer garden on the Sunbury Square. To see this year’s musical lineup visit www.sunburysizzleandsounds.com.

Big Walnut Relay For Life RelayForLife.org/BigWalnut Partnering with the American Cancer Society, Big Walnut is proud to host the Relay for Life each June at Big Walnut High School. Following the ceremonial survivors’ lap, the Friday evening festivities kick off the overnight relay for participants to raise funds for cancer research. The closing ceremony on Saturday at noon reflects this huge commitment by our small town.

A fitting tribute to our loved ones who have lost their lives to the war on terrorism, the Fallen Heroes Memorial brings many visitors to Sunbury year– round. Dedicated in 2007, a memorial service is held in July each year so we “never forget.”

This memorial was established in 2005 by several local Veterans who wanted to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by defending our freedom. It is the only recognized memorial in Ohio that is dedicated to all who died in the line of duty.

The memorial is centered in the heart of Sunbury.

Greater Galena Civic Association www.galenasummerfest.com The Greater Galena Civic Association is a not-for-profit organization whose primary goal is to promote our community and help our government plan for growth in the greater Galena area. GGCA hosts the annual Galena SummerFest each August. Come out for great food, music and fun for the entire family.

Just one of the many commitments this community makes to our youth is through leadership and participation in our local 4-H clubs and our local fairs. Crafts, livestock and horticultural projects are just a few examples of what you will see from the Big Walnut youth at the Delaware County and Hartford fairs.

From rides, fair food and 4-H competitions, this fair is known for the historic Little Brown Jug. The ‘Jug’ race first took place back in 1937 and is a showcase for harness racing. With an estimate of 27,000 spectators, it’s an event you won’t want to miss.

Located in the northwest corner of Licking County, the Hartford Fair is unique in comparison to other Ohio fairs, being the only independent fair in the state. Because Licking County does not have a county fair, the Junior Fair includes exhibits from Licking, Delaware and Knox counties. Be sure to plan a visit to the “Biggest Little Fair in the World” in early August each year.

The presence of the flea markets on the Sunbury square draw crowds of visitors from all over central Ohio who have come to shop.

Sunbury Lions Club www.sunburylionsclubofohio.org Labor Day belongs to the Sunbury Lions Club. They present the Annual Ox Roast. They serve delicious sandwiches all day and offer fun for the entire family. The funds they raise from this great event help them continue to do the work of their organization throughout the year.

Big Walnut Area Historical Society was founded in 1993 to preserve the Myers Inn and to operate it as a museum. We collect local history of the towns and townships which make up the Big Walnut Local Schools and make local history available to the public.

We provide monthly meetings based on a historical themes for our members and the public. Annually all third graders in the Big Walnut School see a 45-minute program in their school on the changes ‘Around the Sunbury Village Square’ and then go to the Myers Inn Museum for a step back in time to visit the one room home of a founder of Sunbury, to visit a stage coach inn, and other parts of our local history which implements their school curriculum.

Special programs are provided for clubs, groups and others interested in our local history. We mark veterans graves at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Annually we honor those who have contributed to our mission.

BWAHS provides local history on their website. From time to time we publish news articles or books on local history, assist others in pursuit of their genealogy or their house genealogy.

We have no paid employees. All is done by volunteers. Join us!

Preservation Parks of Delaware County is the natural areas park system for Sunbury/Big Walnut and the rest of the county. The district’s parks and trails are open 365 days a year, offering beautiful and serene places to enjoy and appreciate nature. Two of the 10 parks—Char-Mar Ridge Park and Hogback Ridge Park—are located near Sunbury. The Ohio to Erie Multi-use Trail passes through Sunbury, and three segments—the Sandel Legacy Trail, Hoover Scenic Trail and Meredith State Road Trail—are part of the park district.

Preservation Parks provides dozens of free public programs in the parks, and works with every county school system to augment their science curricula. The park district continues to acquire undeveloped natural areas in the county, in order to improve habitat for wildlife and maintain Delaware County’s high quality of life.

Area attractions

Get outside and get moving!

With our many growing community attractions it’s getting easier to get in some exercise and quality outdoor time at our public parks and trails!

Parks and recreation J.R. Smith Park in Sunbury acts as host to many little league activities and features a baseball diamond, picnic area, updated playground equipment and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club also hosts little league activities.

Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter house and baseball diamonds.

Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter house and a nice playground.

McNamara Park, located in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields; and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a bike and walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena.

The village of Galena is proud of their boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the wildlife and waterlife.

Kinslow Park Disc Golf Course was established in 2005 and recently underwent rehabilitation thanks to the generous support of both the Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club and 12

Check the Chamber’s website for local tournaments to enter the family in or just stop by for a relaxing hike through the woods while trying to come in under par. This course continues to be free to the public.

Walking distance from the disc golf course is Freedom Park on Ohio 61 in Sunbury behind Sunbury Church of the Nazarene. This park is a new undertaking by the volunteers at the church, and the initial phase of construction is complete with plans in place to expand the park over the next several years. Feel free to make use of the facility while taking children to team practices or just stop by on a sunny day for a picnic and some playground fun.

Walking paths Once everyone’s legs have been stretched out from the fun listed above make sure to check out our communities many walking paths.

The Delaware County Friends of the Trail (DCFT) is actively working to provide a comprehensive series of trails throughout our community.

• The Hoover Scenic Trail was completed in October 2010. It starts at Plumb Road in Delaware County between Old 3C Highway and State Route 3 and runs through the Hoover

• The Big Walnut Community Trail is a 0.6 mile surfaced trail in Sunbury that follows an old railroad bed from a trestle across Old 3C Highway to Big Walnut Elementary School.

The trailhead is located just above Columbus St. just south of S. Vernon St. • The Galena Brick Trail is a 900 ft. trail that follows an old rail bed behind the former Galena Shale and Brick factory north, between the Big and Little Walnut Creek.

• The Genoa Township Trail runs from Mt Royal Ave. to Plumb Road along an old railway down State Route 3. It connects to the Westerville Trail system to the south and ends to the north where the DCFT has worked with Delaware County to secure a Clean Ohio Fund grant to continue the trail from Plumb Road towards the Village of Galena.

Sunbury is a charming, historic village in Delaware County. A stagecoach town in the 1800s, the population was 4,400 at the 2010 census and is now over 5,000. It is at the epicenter of new business and residential growth in Eastern Delaware County. The village is centered around a New England-esque traditional town square with the historic town hall located in the center of a village green.

Myers Inn, one of the oldest structures in Sunbury, faces Sunbury Square and is home to the Big Walnut Area Historical Society. Many community events and festivals take place at the square year round. Sunbury is located just north of Galena, within 10 miles of the cities of Lewis Center and Delaware.

Galena sits at the confluence of the Little and Big Walnut Creeks, the headwaters of Hoover Reservoir, north of Westerville, Ohio and directly south of Sunbury. Originally settled

by American Revolution soldiers in

1809 as a milling center, the Village is best known for the Galena Shale Tile and Brick Company which operated from the 1890s until 1983. Galena’s historic New England style downtown still boasts structures built in the 1820s and bustles with restaurant, service, and retail activity around the Village square. Galena’s population is approximately 800 and growth of the Village is expected to continue as Eastern Delaware County becomes a development hot spot. Much of the original Village includes older homes, while newer subdivisions began being built in 2005. Galena is a thriving community featuring quaint shops, restaurants, businesses, local parks and trails, a section of the Ohio to Erie Trail, and the Hoover Reservoir boardwalk.

Galena’s quaint, small town feel with ample natural resources and amenities is particularly popular with cyclists, fishermen, kayakers, boaters and birders. As the north end of Hoover dries up in the fall and winter, mudflats are exposed that are a critical stopover for migrating birds on the North American Flyway.

Big Walnut fields 27 varsity teams, as well as many other teams from 7th grade through junior varsity that participate in the highly competitive Ohio Capital Conference (OCC).

Big Walnut students also participate in many other activities: 33 percent of students in grades 5 to 12 are in band or choir, 52 percent of middle school students are involved in a club, and elementary and intermediate students are able to choose from over 20 Eagle Extension afterschool and summer clubs.
