here are many options to consider when nearing retirement age, such as whether to sell your home in favor of a smaller place or a senior living community. These huge considerations have potential financial impact, so local experts recommend that you start planning before care is actually needed. It is even more difficult to plan for your own future if you are already providing care for elderly parents or family members; read on for tips on navigating this stage in your life and theirs.

Planning Ahead

Dr. Annette Ticoras owns Guided Patient Services, a health advocacy company based in Central Ohio. Instead of treating patients, she collaborates alongside their existing medical team. “I step in to help improve communication and facilitate a care plan,” she says. As a trained physician, Ticoras knows the right questions to ask a client’s medical team. She says it is challenging to be in your late 40s or early 50s and supporting your own

with a family member and trying to make difficult decisions. “We talk to families who are seeing changes in their loved ones and realize they need to be looking at long-term care options and have no sense of how care is paid for,” she says. Callahan advises people to take stock of the resources available and have conversations about future wishes. These conversations can be difficult, she says, but they are vital. It is important to discuss living preferences, including options for bringing in a home health aide. It is also wise to understand how much care will cost and to contact an elder-law attorney to discuss matters from a legal perspective.

Community Living National Family Caregiver Support Program—which the COAAA oversees in Central Ohio—Patty Callahan connects clients with the resources they need. Callahan explains that the agency is a starting point for people trying to figure out options for their future or those who are in the middle of a health crisis

Even a quick internet search for senior living options in Central Ohio can be overwhelming due to the variety of available options, all offering different levels of care and amenities. Narrow your search to a preferred suburb or neighborhood, then make appointments with representatives from different communities to weigh pros and cons of each. Most communities offer independent and assisted living

children financially, while at the same time navigating care options for elderly parents. “People these ages are still leading very robust lives and trying to figure out how to take Mom and Dad to an appointment,” she explains. This is when her services can greatly benefit local families, she says, with the caveat that “forward thinking” is vital to being prepared. Ticoras strongly recommends handling your advanced directive, commonly known as a living will, while you are still healthy to avoid any confusion during a potential health crisis. It is also important to tell your family members your wishes for end-of-life care. “I get into situations where I can no longer speak to the client because their illness is too advanced,” she says. “It becomes difficult quickly.” The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) is another local resource that can help families plan for their own long-term health care, as well as help caregivers navigate resources for elderly parents or family members. The COAAA is funded by the Older Americans Act of 1965 and serves Franklin and seven neighboring counties. As an information and referral specialist for the agency and local director of the

options, as well as memory care for patients suffering from various forms of dementia. Robin Reid, community relations director at First & Main, a new senior living community in New Albany, says while there is a lot to figure out for senior living, you don’t have it to do it alone. “You can request planning information from us, and an advisor will help you navigate personal, legal or financial questions you may have as you consider a move,” she explains. Amenities and social activities play a vital role in selecting a senior community, and First & Main has tapped Brant Baker as its director of excitement (no, that is not a typo). His job is to keep residents engaged while making new friends and experiencing new challenges. And at The Deco, a newly opened 55-and-up community in Clintonville, residents can keep gardens, have cats (and in some units, dogs), lounge around the private pool and enjoy interior courtyards and patios. Kensington Place, a Lutheran Social Services senior community on the East Side, has several pastors representing different faiths that live within the community to provide counseling and religious services to residents.

Financial Planning

Renee Walburn, executive director at Kensington Place, says the staff are very knowledgeable about helping potential residents make financial plans. Senior communities often are private pay, meaning insurance likely will not cover the expense. However, Medicare and Medicaid can offer some options, and veterans and their families may be eligible for benefits, says Walburn. An organization such as the COAAA can help point families to resources to help them understand financial restrictions around Medicare and Medicaid. Kristel Smith, director of sales and marketing at Parkside Village in Westerville, says many residents within the community have purchased long-term care insurance, which pays a designated daily amount toward assisted living services. Every community offers different financial packages, which is why it is important to start your search—for yourself or an aging parent—before you are forced to make a quick decision. The choice to sell your home and potentially move to a senior living community can be stressful. Whatever families decide, it is best to plan ahead so big decisions do not have to be made during a health care crisis. “For those who do this in advance, there is such a peace of mind in knowing what will happen,” says Ticoras. “You have asked ‘what if,’ have answered it, and you can focus on living.”
