ABOUT THE AWARDS

The selection process

All nominees were eligible for all scholarships. Winners were chosen by a panel of judges from The Dispatch, who considered academic and athletic performance, school leadership, community service and other criteria.

Sponsored awards

* The John J. Bishop Awards, presented by Motorists Insurance Group, are presented to a top male and top female scholar-athlete who show exemplary leadership skills within their schools. * The Capt. Warren B. Sneed Memorial Scholarship is presented on behalf of the 1991 Dispatch scholar-athlete from Circleville High School who died in November 2000 in a military accident over the Sea of Japan. The award has been presented annually since 2001. * The Atlas Butler Strength in Service Award is presented to a top scholar-athlete who has strengthened and improved his or her community by going above and beyond to make it a better place to live. * The OhioHealth Perseverance Award is presented to a top scholar-athlete who has persevered over illnesses and/or injuries and/or dealt with major challenges. The student is honored for his or her determination and courage in how he or she has overcome adversity. * The Battelle STEM Award is presented to a top scholar-athlete who exemplifies outstanding achievement in science, technology, engineering and math. Researchers and scientists rely on their STEM expertise to drive innovation and solve the world’s most difficult challenges.

Tomlinson, Himes, Cressy show resiliency, go above and beyond to earn scholarships

By ELLEN GEYER THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH For Jared Tomlinson, Christina Himes and Ella Cressy and many other high school seniors, merely excelling on the field and in the classroom wasn’t enough.

On June 5, each of the three was among 22 scholarship winners at the 2019 Dispatch Motorists Insurance Group Scholar-Athlete Awards show, a nod to their efforts beyond strong performances in athletics and academics.

Tomlinson is a runner from Canal Winchester and the winner of the Battelle STEM award for outstanding achievement in science, technology, engineering and math.

Tomlinson participated in Cisco computer programming competitions throughout high school.

The activity allowed him to pursue his passion for computer networking, and he did well, ranking fifth nationally.

“I was excited to win something related to STEM,” Tomlinson said of his Battelle award, worth $2,500. “I love computers. I love science. I love math. Just winning a scholarship related to that is very special.”

Tomlinson cited the importance of the relationship between sports and STEM. “I’ve done cross country, track and swimming and I think that working with a team is very helpful,” he said.

Cressy suffered an ACL tear in her right knee in May 2017, then tore the same ligament in the left knee a year later. Ever-resilient, she remained an active member of her team in a different capacity, acting as a team manager while attending practices and games to support and mentor her teammates.

In the fall, Cressy will finally get back to the sport she loves as she pursues soccer at Ohio Wesleyan. “(Getting back to soccer) means everything. It’s been my dream since I was a little kid to play college soccer. …

I’m really glad I’m able to still do that,” she said.

Introduced in May 1982, the Dispatch and Motorists Insurance Group Scholar-Athlete Awards annually honor the best and brightest high school students in central Ohio.

In early March, The Dispatch mailed nomination forms to 117 area high schools, asking administrators from each school to select two seniors – one girl and one boy – as their institution’s top scholar-athletes to vie for $96,500 in college scholarships.

These scholarships are funded by Motorists, Wolfe Associates, OhioHealth, Atlas Butler, Battelle Institute and the family of Capt. Warren B. Sneed. Awards and scholarships were presented at the 2019 Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet on June 5 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

This year, 205 scholar-athletes from 107 participating schools were selected. Each honoree received free admission to the banquet as well as a plaque and gift bag from the program sponsors.

I’ve had the opportunity to grow as an athlete in the pool, and it’s what I’m doing in college, so I thought my picture should reflect that.

ERIC ALBRECHT/DISPATCH Favorite subject: Computer science, because my teacher was awesome, and I think it’s interesting that you can write code to create almost anything in the world.

Least-favorite subject: History, because although it’s interesting to learn about where we come from and the events that affected our current society, it’s difficult for me to understand the broader themes.

How I relax: I do hot yoga with my mom. It gives me a chance to stretch and focus all of my energy into one task and give my practice a purpose.

Favorite book: “Where’d You Go,

Bernadette,” by Maria Semple. I like the plot, and that the story is told through different perspectives.

Favorite movie: I don’t watch a lot of movies, but my favorite Broadway musical is “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Favorite television show: “Scandal” Favorite musicians: I love Sam Smith’s range in terms of the genres he writes in as well as his voice. MK is more of a DJ but produces fun songs that are great to dance to.

Go-to website: YouTube is where I go for entertainment.

Essential apps: I am obsessed with Pinterest and planning out my life. The

News app also is a favorite because I have to stay up to date with what’s going on in the world. The articles could be political, science-related, fashion trends or celebrity updates for brain candy when I need a break.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Pizza pasta — a five-cheese penne pasta bake that my mom makes, and it is unreal. I’m lactose-intolerant, so it’s definitely one I have to eat sparingly.

My cooking specialty: I love cooking, so I’ll make about anything I’m in the mood for. My mom is an incredible chef and makes amazing meals so I’ve had the luxury of learning from

her. My specialty is probably a chicken and veggie rice bowl. It’s inspired by the Buddha Bowl from Northstar Café, one of my favorite restaurants.

Favorite restaurant: My favorite in Columbus is Brassica, but my all-time favorite is Buddakan in New York City.

Guilty pleasure: Art. I love making bracelets and keychains for myself and friends, but I also branch out and color shoes or just draw.

Proudest sports moment: Playing Thomas Worthington in field hockey this season and winning 4-0. We’d lost to them in the state final last year and had been working hard in practice to prepare for it.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I’d like to learn how to ski or snowboard.

Favorite athlete: Soccer player Abby Wambach, because of her “wolfpack” speech.

Inspiration: My mom is everything I hope to be when I’m older.

Person I’d like to meet: The actress and activist Yara Shahidi is using her platform to make a difference. It’s cool to see her be active and vocal at essentially the same age I am.

Something most people don’t know about me: I am an avid euchre player.

Least-favorite household chore: Definitely it’s cleaning up the kitchen after I cook. I get so excited to eat that I often forget that I have to clean and put away everything.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: I cannot swim backstroke to save my life.

Recognizing future community leaders through the Scholar-Athlete Awards The Scholar-Athlete Awards recognize students who excel as leaders in their respective sports, the classroom and their communities. Motorists Insurance Group aspires to be an outstanding corporate citizen in all locations served, and they encourage their associates to be leaders in their areas of expertise through innovation and collaboration. With this clear alignment, it was a no-brainer for Motorists to become a presenting sponsor of the Scholar-Athlete Awards in 2007. Since then, Motorists has contributed more than $600,000 in scholarships to assist in the education of hundreds of college students.

“Leadership is more than a position – it’s a behavior,” Motorists CEO Dave Kaufman said. “The ScholarAthlete Awards support young members of our community who work to become better leaders every day.”

These young individuals have demonstrated leadership on the field, in the classroom and, most importantly, in our communities. It’s a

great honor to support their education as they help shape our community. Motorists recognizes that these are our future leaders.

Each year, athletic directors, principals and guidance staff at more than 100 central Ohio high schools nominate students who embody the ideals of scholar athletes. These students have gone on to study at universities close to home, such as The Ohio State University, and throughout the country at schools such as Harvard University and Vanderbilt University.

This year, Motorists will again award $60,000 in scholarships to 12 graduating seniors. Two of the scholarships honor John J. Bishop, former president and CEO of Motorists. The John J. Bishop scholarships award $10,000 to one female athlete as well as one male athlete.

“John left a legacy at Motorists,” said Kaufman.

“His leadership got us to where we are today. We wanted to honor his contribution by passing on that

Least-favorite subject: The most difficult class, but not necessarily my least favorite, is Calculus BC. It’s challenging math, stuff I’ve never done before, but my teacher was really good, and the whole class got along well.

How I relax: I hang out with my friends and my girlfriend. We love to go to Roosters and talk for hours.

Prized possessions: My two dogs,

because they are always loving and happy to see me.

Favorite books: The Percy Jackson series. It’s been a while since I’ve read them, but those books were great in elementary school.

Favorite movie: “The Dark Knight,” in which the acting is phenomenal.

Favorite television network: Probably FX because it usually runs movies all day. I’ve never really gotten into one specific TV show.

Favorite musician: Kenny Chesney’s music always puts me in a good mood. It’s great for warm weather and brings people together.

watch all sorts of different entertaining or informative videos there.

Essential app: I use Twitter the most. I wouldn’t say I’m attached to it, but there is a lot of funny material on there.

Favorite home-cooked meal: My mom makes amazing Italian food, and her chicken parmesan is unbelievable.

My cooking specialty: Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches Favorite restaurant: I go to Chipotle a good amount, but if I’m picking a nicer restaurant, it would be the Cheesecake Factory. They have amazing chicken parm, as well.

Proudest sports moment: Being a part of a fantastic group of guys during my senior season and making it to the regional final in football. Before the season, there was a lot of doubt surrounding us and how we would perform. I’d say going 11-2 and being Ohio Capital Conference champs is pretty good.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Hockey looks fun, but I know I would fall down over and over again.

Story behind my uniform number: My older brother wore No. 9 when he was at Davidson. When he graduated, he told me he wanted me to wear it.

Favorite athlete: I’m not really in awe of any particular athletes, but I do admire LeBron James’ work ethic and how he gives back to the community.

Inspiration: My family has inspired me to be the best I can be my entire life.

They are always encouraging me.

Person I’d like to meet: Donald Trump.

He’s the president, so that’s a pretty big deal.

Dream job: Playing in the NFL, but I’m realistic about my talents.

Favorite book: “The Hate U Give,” by Angie Thomas. I am an avid reader, and I’ve related to many characters, but I’ve never been able to say I could be the main character. But Starr Carter’s internal and external conflicts, thoughts and experiences were nearly identical to my own.

Favorite movies: Don’t roll your eyes, but “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” because it was the first movie I remember seeing in theaters as a little kid, and “Starstruck,” which I watched on Disney Channel in a hotel with my little brother.

Favorite television show: “Saved By the Bell” (excluding season five),

because my brother and I bingewatched the entire series on Netflix (back when Netflix was popping).

Favorite musician: My dad has a beautiful voice that resonates in your soul.

(The only issue is when I’m singing at home and he “Mariah Careys” the song by taking it over, clearly showing who is the dominant singer.)

Go-to website: I often go onto Instagram to look at memes for my entertainment. It always brings a smile to my face.

Essential app: I couldn’t do without Messenger, which is how I contact every person I know on my phone.

My cooking specialty: My favorite meal is a grilled chicken dish seasoned with spices. There aren’t any measurements, or set-in-stone ingredients, but it is always cooked perfectly, juicy and tasty.

Favorite restaurant: I always love going to Culver’s. As a child, my family would go there after church nearly every time. The fries there are amazing.

Guilty pleasure: Whenever I have a chance, I’ll buy myself some clementine-flavored Izze and relax.

Proudest sports moment: It definitely is when my soccer team played our first playoff game on our home field.

We won that night, as well.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Golf seems very relaxing, yet there is a competitive side to it.

Story behind my uniform number: The No. 5 is a symbol of luck for me, which is why it stuck throughout my career.

Favorite athlete: My teammate Ethan Griffin is an athlete who is proud of who he is and where he is. He is full of talent and is a great person all around.

Inspiration: My coaches have worked to help me strive for greatness. They have done a lot for me to grow and develop.

Person I’d like to meet: The astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. This man knows the sciences I’d like to learn about one day.

Dream job: It would be ideal to be a doctor. The ability to assist in or to save lives would be amazing.

Place I’d like to travel: I’d like to visit Japan, to see their engineering innovations, and to taste their foods.

Something most people don’t know about me: I adapt to most situations quickly, which allows me to overcome most obstacles I face.

Least-favorite household chore: I really don’t like any chores, but the one that wins above all is doing the dishes. It is a very time-consuming job.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: I’ve never been able to feel satisfied as a person. No matter what I try — sports, social life, work, cooking, etc. — I always end up bored and unsatisfied, as if I haven’t done anything or enough for others.

Favorite athlete: Basketball player Cheryl Miller was a force who refused to be outshone by her brother, Reggie.

She helped make many advancements for women’s sports.

Dream job: Honestly, I would love to be a marine biologist or study the flora and fauna in Hawaii, but I have a responsibility to improve my community and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. My dream job is to work on behalf of the people on the city, state or national level.

Place I’d like to travel: Any continent that has a beach. Africa, Asia, South America … actually, Australia might be a tad too dangerous, but anywhere that has a beach and good food.

Something most people don’t know about me: I suffer from stage fright.

Every time I step in front of a group to speak, I have second and third thoughts about why I put myself in that position.

Least-favorite household chore: Cleaning the bathroom. I am super germaphobic about certain things, and the bathroom disgusts me.

ERIC ALBRECHT/DISPATCH Home front: I live with my parents, Susan and Eric Rinaldi, and my 15year-old brother, AJ. We have two cats, Junior Mint and Gonzo, and a Boston Terrier, Wally, who thinks he’s a cat, too.

Favorite subject: My ceramics class. I never was very good at art, but when I took my first ceramics class in sophomore year, I was hooked.

Least-favorite subject: I sometimes struggle with English. I have an analytical brain, so math and science classes are easier for me.

How I relax: I watch reality TV. Cooking and baking shows are my go-to favorites while sitting on the

couch with my mom.

Prized possession: I’m not sure if he’s a possession, but my cat Junior Mint is my pride and joy. Every night he sleeps next to my pillow, purring.

Favorite book: I really enjoyed “All the Light We Cannot See,” by Anthony Doerr. I like historical fiction, and this one had me on the edge of my seat.

Favorite television show: “Parks and Recreation” is my all-time favorite. I’ve seen the entire series at least seven times, and it still makes me laugh.

Favorite musician: I love almost every song by Bruno Mars, especially the old ones.

Essential app: Snapchat. I love taking

pictures of friends and whatever we’re doing. It is especially fun when the app reminds you of the pictures you took last year “on this day.”

Favorite home-cooked meal: My grandmother makes spaghetti before most of my big swim meets and games. She says it’s an acquired taste because she uses an old recipe that includes lots of fennel in the sauce. I definitely acquired the taste.

My cooking specialty: I like to make my version of a Taco Bell crunchwrap (but better). It consists of beans, ground beef, cheese, corn and jalapenos sandwiched between two crunchy taco shells, all wrapped up in

a tortilla and grilled to perfection.

Guilty pleasure: Every once in a while I’ll go to the Cheesecake Factory for a slice of banana cream cheesecake. It never disappoints.

Proudest sports moment: When our field hockey team won our third consecutive state title my junior year.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Rowing.

I think the full-body strength and cardiovascular endurance required would be a fun challenge.

Favorite athlete: Serena Williams is hands down one of the most talented athletes of all time and also a positive advocate for women. I think she is a great role model on and off the court.

Person I’d like to meet: I wish I could have met my grandfather, Tony, on my dad’s side of the family. He passed away before I was born, but my dad told me he was a strong, hardworking man with great stories.

Dream job: I would like to be a CEO one day, inspiring positive change throughout the work environment.

Something most people don’t know about me: I’m a bit of a slob. I like to think that I am pretty organized but if you looked at my bedroom, you would never believe it.

Least-favorite household chore: Cleaning the cat box. I love my two cats, but man, are they smelly.

White Castle focuses on empowerment As a family owned business celebrating its 98th year, White Castle has demonstrated a consistent commitment to community focused on making a difference in the lives of others. The iconic brand was founded in Wichita, Kan., in 1921, and then made its way to Columbus in 1934.

From a community giving perspective, White Castle is focused on fulfilling its vision of “feeding the souls of Craver generations everywhere through its Castle Shares program,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle.

The effort is an initiative of community investment that is guided by a desire to “feed hunger, hopes and dreams.”

One of White Castle’s biggest areas of support is a partnership with Autism Speaks, which is dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support.

White Castle has partnered with the organization for more than 10 years, and has helped raise more than $8 million in funding, primarily through an an-

nual fundraising campaign in its restaurants.

In addition, White Castle has launched creative efforts, such as selling a collectible original slider scented candle designed by Laura Slatkin, the CEO of NEST Fragrances, as a way to raise funds for this charity.

“The initial candle sold out in six days, and over the years, we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars that we’ve been able to donate to Autism Speaks — and providing hard working Americans everywhere what they want and need — aroma therapy when they can’t get to the drive-through,” Richardson said.

One thing is certain — when it comes to caring about community and families, White Castle is one family business that puts its money where its mouth is.

How I relax: I often find myself spending time with friends and family in a low-key environment. I enjoy playing cards, watching sports and simply fellowshipping with friends and family.

Prized possession: My Bible has every solution, answer and word I need when I am struggling, questioning or need guidance.

Favorite book: Besides the Bible, my favorite is “Shaken,” by Tim Tebow, because it focuses on understanding who you are and whose you are.

Favorite movie: “I Can Only Imagine,” because of the Christian message the movie is built upon.

Favorite television show: “Criminal Minds.” The psychology involved in assessing criminal activity, I think it's fascinating.

Favorite musician: I have many favorites but if I had to choose I would pick Lecrae. He presents the Gospel in his music through a way

Coming into my freshman year, I wanted to continue the legacy of a former 1,000-point scorer, Tyler Primmer, by wearing his No. 35 throughout my high school career.

And, as a freshman playing varsity basketball, there were not many choices left.

Favorite athlete: LeBron James. I have tried to mimic his style of play on the basketball court, and he also gives a lot back to the community.

Inspiration: Tim Tebow Person I’d like to meet: Jon Gordon, the author and motivational speaker, because he is so motivational and through everything he does, he keeps his focus on Christ.

Dream job: To work for ESPN, commentating on college basketball games.

Place I’d like to travel: Israel. I would love to be able to walk the same places Jesus walked. I think it would bring me even closer to Him. Everyone who has been says that the Bible really comes to life when you visit the Holy Land.

Favorite television show: “Game of Thrones.” I wanted Cersei to win, though, so it didn’t end well for me.

Favorite musician: Ariana Grande. I liked the album “Sweetener,” and there’s a story about my sister and I listening to her music before my sister won her first-ever cross country race, so her music means a lot to both of us.

Go-to website: Probably YouTube. I watch Matthew Santoro and Crash Course a lot to learn all sorts of interesting information.

Essential app: I use Twitter to stay informed, find memes, and it’s my social media account with the most traffic, so I like to keep it around.

Favorite home-cooked meal: I don’t necessarily have a favorite meal, but I like cooked pineapple slices that we have at Thanksgiving.

My cooking specialty: I’m great at making tacos.

Favorite restaurant: There’s a place in Newark called Yesterday’s Pub that’s decorated with historical trinkets from the 20th century. I enjoy its aesthetic.

Guilty pleasure: I could sit down and eat 30 chocolate-chip cookies at a time if I wanted to. I plan on doing that after track season is over.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I can’t swim at all, so it’d be fun to try to join a swim team so I can learn how.

Favorite athlete: Matthew Dellavedova of the Cleveland Cavaliers may never be an all-star-level player but he is a key piece of every team he’s on.

Person I’d like to meet: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a general from the Civil War. I give him credit for preserving the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg, and his life was interesting — from his joining the military to becoming a general to becoming the president of Bowdoin College to becoming governor of Maine.

Dream job: To be a U.S. senator. I’ve followed politics closely for a few years now, and it’d be awesome to have some sort of direct influence over what our legislative branch is doing.

Place I’d like to travel: I’d like to spend a week hiking. I think mountains are pretty to look at, and it’s calming to spend time in nature, away from everything.

Something most people don’t know about me: I used to be able to rap every word of “Super Bass,” by Nicki Minaj.

Least-favorite household chore: I cannot stand mowing. I tried it once, and I never want to do it again. I’m allergic to pollen and grass, and it’s hot most of the time you have to mow, so the whole experience is unenjoyable.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: I do not pronounce the word emergency correctly. I always make the “er” sound like “ar,” and I cannot get myself to stop.

Favorite athlete: I’m a big fan of Sydney McLaughlin. She’s an incredible hurdler, and I admire the way she carries herself on and off the track.

Inspiration: Missy Franklin, for her swimming talents as well as her attitude and outlook on life.

Person I’d like to meet: Jesus. I have questions.

Dream job: In middle school, I told everyone that I would move to Hawaii and become a pineapple farmer. It looks like that won’t be my main career but I’m not counting it out.

Place I’d like to travel: Australia! I love snorkeling and have surfed four or five times, so I’d love to try it there.

Something most people don’t know about me: In the words of Michael Scott, “I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious.” Whenever anyone mentions states during track season, I have to knock on wood.

Least-favorite household chore: When I was young my dad would make me pick up twigs and tree branches that had fallen into the yard before he cut the grass. I cried on multiple occasions because it made my back sore and it was hot outside. I’ve toughened up a little since then.

thinking about where to be on the field, the next pass, who needs to be marked, etc. There’s no time to think about anything but the game.

Prized possession: I’m not big on material possessions, but I treasure my Neymar soccer jersey, given to me by one of my best friends.

Proudest sports moment: One of our school’s big rivals is Tree of Life. The final time playing basketball against them, we won by 11, and I scored 40 points to tie my school’s single-game record. The jubilation in the locker room was unlike any other.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Call me crazy, but I’ve always wanted to play football. I don’t have the size, but the lack of restriction in tackling and running with the ball would be fun because I’ve been known to get into foul trouble in basketball.

Favorite athlete: Roger Federer is an incredibly talented player who made tennis relevant. Beyond athleticism, however, is his humility, commitment to serve his fans, the public and his family.

Inspiration: My family. My parents left their families and friends for a higher education so that they can provide a better life for my siblings and me.

They taught me to to push boundaries to become the best version of myself.

And my sisters are with me in every step of my life supporting me, guiding me and cheering me up.

Person I’d like to meet: I’d like to have met Albert Einstein to learn how he approached riddles and problems to obtain the solutions even when it seemed impossible.

Favorite movie: I absolutely love “Divergent.” The strength Tris shows is amazing. She shows that women can do anything.

Favorite television show: I don’t watch much TV, but I do cheer on the Buckeyes! I also loved “Downton Abbey” when it was on and I catch “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” in my free time.

Favorite musician: Lorde is ahead of her time. I saw her in concert twice and think she seems like a smart, hardworking, unique and talented person.

Prized possession: My car: a darkblue, 2005 Subaru Legacy 5-speed turbo that I like to pretend is my own personal race car. It’s a way for me to

express myself, relax and have fun, all at the same time.

Favorite book: I’m going to be honest and say I do not enjoy reading much, so I really only read books for class.

However, in middle school I enjoyed the Legend series, by Marie Lu. Favorite movie: “Baby Driver” has cool cars, good driving and good music. And who doesn’t love a good bank heist movie?

Favorite television show: I know “Lost” is older, but I just watched it from beginning to end, and it’s my new favorite, right above “The Office.”

Favorite musician: I don’t like to pick favorites because I listen to a variety of different music, from rock to electronic.

Proudest sports moment: Running sub-18 minutes for the first time in a 5K during a night race, when I actually thought I was running terribly.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Tennis. I have a few friends who play, and it seems like a great time.

Inspiration: Over the years, I’ve learned that my dad knows a little bit of everything, from Excel spreadsheets to rebuilding lawn-mower engines.

And no matter what he is doing, he makes sure that it is done right and to the best of his ability.

Dream job: I want to be a network engineer. I have a real love for designing things, and this job combines that love with my curiosity for computers.

Place I’d like to travel: I’d love to visit Switzerland. Many of my friends were able to go there for a school trip, and they made me jealous with all of their great stories.

Something most people don’t know about me: I can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than a minute. (It’s usually longer, but I’ve done it, I swear).

Least-favorite household chore: Putting away laundry just makes me miserable for some reason.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: Getting up on time in the morning. I either oversleep or get up earlier than I need to. It’s never quite right.

world allows me to be as creative and imaginative like when I was a child.

Favorite movie: “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Some might question this weird choice, but I find the creepy characters to be cute. Also, the songs are catchy, as I might know every single lyric.

Favorite television show: “Friends.” If you haven’t seen an episode, I highly recommend season 5, episode 17.

Sports medicine programs play vital role in high school sports As high school sports have evolved into major programs that rival those at some colleges, the presence of a sports medicine team of physicians and athletic trainers at the game and on the practice field has never been more important.

When an injury occurs, the sports medicine team is who parents, coaches and players rely on to ensure an athlete receives the proper treatment and a return-to-play protocol that gets him or her back on the field without further injury.

OhioHealth Sports Medicine has been providing this critical support to area high schools, colleges, universities and professional sports teams for more than a decade.

But treating injuries is just one part of OhioHealth Sports Medicine’s focus. The team also provides specialized programs that focus on improving safety and maximizing physical and mental performance.

These specialty programs include OhioHealth’s athletic cardiac screenings, pre-participation heart screenings for athletes 14 and older that test for underlying heart conditions that could put them at risk for sudden cardiac death.

A concussion management program, run by specially trained physicians and athlete trainers, utilizes

the most current research and best practices to manage these serious brain injuries. This includes baseline ImPACT® neurocognitive assessments used by the National Football League and Major League Baseball to determine an athlete’s brain function before and after a concussion that enable doctors to uncover cognitive deficits. OhioHealth athletic trainers and physical therapists also work with

OhioHealth provides a sports psychology program because getting and maintaining the right mindset can make all the difference in athletic success. This program helps players,

coaches and teams overcome psychological barriers, build confidence and optimize mental performance.

The sports medicine team also provides sports nutrition counseling that helps athletes understand how an optimal eating plan can maximize performance while a custom athletic performance exercise program called APEX, designed for student athletes, enhance movements specific to a sport through a customized strength and condition program.

By bringing together this multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, sports nutritionists, sports psychologists, physical therapists, sports medicine physicians and athletic trainers, the OhioHealth Sports Medicine team focuses on all areas of a player’s health and performance so they can make the most of their high school playing careers and minimize their risk of injury.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Swimming. I’ve always loved going to the pool with my friends and watching Team USA swim in the Olympics.

Favorite athlete: Brazilian soccer player Pelé is my favorite. His dribbling, passes and other skills blow me away.

He was a big inspiration to aspiring young athletes.

Inspiration: My friend Brock Johnson taught me to never stop believing in myself and to follow my dreams no matter what obstacle I encounter.

Person I’d like to meet: Being able to kick around with Lionel Messi and ultimately get embarrassed when I try to pull a move on him and he takes the ball away with ease is a dream of mine.

Dream job: I’ve always dreamed of doing something with sports and physical therapy. If that doesn’t work out, I’d love to be a food critic.

Place I’d like to travel: All around the world. If I had to pick one place, I would pick the black-sand beaches in Tahiti. My grandparents constantly talk about the time they went to Tahiti, and I can’t help but get a little jealous.

Something most people don’t know about me: I got my cat, Rainbow, for my fifth birthday and named her that because it was my favorite color at the time. It is ironic because she is actually gray and white.

Least-favorite household chore: So many choices, but if I had to pick one, I’d choose laundry. Being a studentathlete means having more jerseys and practice outfits to be washed.

Favorite movie: I grew up with weekly family movie nights, so I think of myself as an avid movie watcher. One of my favorite series is “Transformers.”

Favorite television shows: One way to procrastinate is to watch Netflix. I love shows that make me laugh, so my favorites include “Derry Girls,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “The Office” and “New Girl.”

Favorite musicians: This is brutal;

there is no way I can choose only one band among thousands. I will say that some of my favorites include Hippo Campus, Glass Animals, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, the Beatles, Conan Gray, The Neighbourhood and Rex Orange County.

Go-to website: Twitter is my go-to app for anything and everything and always has what I need.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Spaghetti, prepared by my mom. She makes it perfect every time.

My cooking specialty: I make a mean peanut butter and pickle sandwich. It sounds gross, but it combines my two favorite foods: pickles and peanut

butter.

Favorite restaurant meal: Cheese pizza at Mikey’s Late Night Slice.

Nothing is better than stuffing your face with pizza after a concert. Of course, the pizza would not be complete without a Coke to drink.

Guilty pleasure: There is not a problem in the world that a banana milkshake can’t fix.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I’d like to learn how to snowboard and go down a halfpipe. Every year I watch the X-Games and am always amazed at the snowboarders’ talents. I don’t think anything could be better than flipping through the air in the snow.

Favorite athlete: Probably Ali Krieger. I grew up watching her play on the USWNT, and she was easily one of my biggest role models.

Dream job: The specifics always change, but I know I want to work in the pharmaceutical industry focusing on drug discovery.

Places I’d like to travel: I would travel anywhere in the world. I prefer cities over beaches, but anywhere is fun. My bucket list includes Spain, northern Italy, Switzerland, Amsterdam and New Zealand.

However, I’m a little scared to go to New Zealand because I heard they have big spiders.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: I have never been able to successfully paint my nails. It looks like a 2-year-old did it. This is one reason my nails are never painted.

A few years ago, Atlas Butler decided to join The Columbus Dispatch and The Motorists Insurance Group in supporting rising scholar athletes as part of the Scholar Athlete Awards that are presented each year in the spring to honor outstanding student athletes in the Greater Columbus area.

“It’s always been a part of our company culture,” Swepston said. “We’ve been

around for a long time, and we’ve seen the difference it can make to invest in young people. We place a high value on education and the importance it has in shaping a community — to be able to strengthen it and improve upon it. What better way to do that than to support high school students going out into the world who can also make a difference?”

“At the core it comes down to recognizing and supporting up-and-coming students,”

Swepston said.

This year, the Scholar Athlete Awards was held June 6 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The company gave out the Atlas Butler Strength in Service Award, as well as a $2,500 scholarship to the scholar athlete who, in addition to being an exemplary student athlete, made a difference in the community by volunteering or raising money for a particular cause or organization.

“Our participation is to sponsor a community service leadership role,” Swepston said. “We want to emphasize

to these young leaders that participating in the community to help others with their tremendous talents is a top priority.”

“The Scholar Athlete fits in perfectly with what we stand for, especially since it has the academic component to it.

Our Strength in Service award recognizes students who went above and beyond — and who took the initiative upon themselves — to make their own community a better place,” Swepston said.

While technological advances over the years may have changed the way the company does business, Atlas Butler’s commitment to its employees as well as the community in which it does business has remained the same.

“The company has not forgotten its local roots, nor what it means to give back to the community,” said Swepston, whose son, Michael, also works for the company making him the fourth generation to participate in the tradition.

Atlas Butler, with headquarters on the northeast side of Columbus and 145 employees, is the largest residential heating and cooling company in Greater Columbus.

Proudest sports moment: In my sophomore year at the district cross country meet, when I broke 20 minutes for a 5K for the first time, got an alldistrict award and qualified for regionals.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I have never played quidditch before, but I really enjoyed Harry Potter, read all of the books and watched the movies on multiple occasions. Why not?

Prized possession: My 2000 Cadillac DeVille, which has an incredible amount of character and is the envy of my classmates. It also has a 4.6-liter V8, which allows it to absolutely fly.

by Michael Jordan. I draw inspiration from Jordan’s incredible drive and work ethic.

Favorite movie: “Lone Survivor.” I admire the incredible courage and sacrifices made by Marcus Luttrell and his fellow SEALs. Favorite television show: I love watching “Hard Knocks” on HBO every year. I enjoy seeing the parallels between the teams on the show and my own team.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Every Christmas, my grandma makes a

mouth-watering beef tenderloin that is legendary in our family.

My cooking specialty: I have mastered the cheeseburger. I prefer a quarterpound burger made of 85% lean beef.

I coat it in olive oil and season it with a dry rub, and I also season the grill so the flavor infuses into the burger while it cooks. I like it cooked to medium, then topped with provolone cheese on a lightly toasted bun.

Favorite restaurant: I love City Barbecue, especially on Rib Bone Tuesdays when ribs are only $1.35.

Guilty pleasure: I love UDF Serious Chocolate milk and more often than not buy a half gallon whenever I pass the store.

Proudest sports moment: In my last

high school football game, we beat our arch-rival, DeSales, on our home field — the first time we had beaten them in five years. I credit that to my teammates and I having more will to win and playing with more of an edge than our opponent. I could not have asked for a better way to end my high school football career.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I would love to become an elite-level Alpine skier. I think racing down a snow-covered mountain would be exhilarating.

Favorite athlete: I love Conor McGregor’s swagger and the way he carries himself. I also find him entertaining inside and outside the octagon.

Inspiration: My great-uncle Richard Mauger was a World War II glider pilot who was responsible for landing his aircraft loaded with 14 other men safely behind enemy lines. He now is 97 years old and is still able to live by himself. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery.

Person I’d like to meet: Elon Musk. I think he has many genius ideas, and I would love to hear his plans for the future.

Dream job: I would love to be an NFL general manager, which would combine two of my favorite interests (business and football).

Inspiration: Greta Thunberg, the 16year-old environmental activist from Sweden who started a “school strike for the climate” protest outside Swedish parliament. I admire such a young person making a big impact on an important topic.

Person I’d like to meet: I would like to meet Barack Obama to get a real picture with him, instead of the one I have with his cardboard cutout.

Dream job: Being an emergency-room doctor or a trauma surgeon and/or working overseas in international relief services.

Places I’d like to travel: Germany and Italy. I have taken German for seven years and have enjoyed learning the language and culture. I love Italian food and my great-grandfather is a native of Italy. We have a family trip planned to both of these countries.

Something most people don’t know about me: I’m scared of elevators. I’m not sure why, although I recall a particularly scary one at Seven Springs when I was little. The thought of being trapped scares me a bit. I prefer the stairs!

Least-favorite household chore: Vacuuming. The smell of the vacuum is unappealing. Plus, I can’t listen to music while vacuuming – it is too loud!

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: French braiding my hair. I don’t know why, but I can’t get the braid as tight as when others braid it for me.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Cheesy potatoes topped with Corn Flakes that get crispy in the oven. It is my great aunt’s recipe, but either my mom or my grandmother makes it for just about any family gathering.

My cooking specialty: Chocolate-covered pretzels, of course!

Favorite restaurant: There is a new restaurant in Pickerington called Hangry City, and my family and I are obsessed. The Pennsatucky Slider is

my favorite.

Guilty pleasure: Reese’s peanut butter cups; I love salty and sweet!

Proudest sports moment: When I started playing volleyball, I couldn’t get my serve over the net and I actually got cut from the seventh-grade team. So I worked twice as hard and came back with one of the most consistent serves of anyone on the team.

I easily made the team in eighth grade and by the end of that year I was playing on a national team for club volleyball.

Sport I’d like to try someday: It might be cool to try surfing. I’ve never done anything like it before.

Story behind my uniform number: I didn’t really have a story behind my number, but I’ve recently discovered a personality test called the Enneagram, which uses nine numbers to define different personalities. I’m a 5, which is my volleyball number.

Dream job: Nothing specific, just something that would challenge me to come up with ideas and think in new ways. I want a job where I have a purpose.

Place I’d like to travel: I’ve always wanted to go to Australia and snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef. I think seeing all the sea life would be beautiful.

Least-favorite household chore: I hate doing laundry. I always forget to put my clothes in the dryer and end up having to wash them again.

This is important to me because it is the location of our annual TEDx event, which I have organized for the past three years. Each year, we have around 400 attendees that pack the theater to hear intriguing talks from community and student speakers.

How I relax: I spend time with friends and family, watch TV shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad” and “Narcos”, and play Frisbee golf.

Favorite book: “Unbroken.” The story of Louis Zamperini’s perseverance as an athlete and prisoner of war is

inspirational. I am amazed by his massive strength.

Favorite movie: “Kicking & Screaming.”

Will Ferrell is one of my favorite actors, and the combination of soccer and humor makes this one of my favorites.

Favorite television show: “Game of Thrones.”

Favorite musician: I’ve always loved listening to Justin Timberlake’s music with my family.

Go-to website: ESPN. I’ve always loved staying up to date with the sports world and enjoy tracking my favorite teams and players online and playing fantasy sports with friends. One of my favorite hobbies is fantasy football.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Chicken corn chowder, made by my mom. It is filled with vegetables and meat, and it’s delicious.

My cooking specialty: I’ve never been able to cook, but I like to think that I specialize in making macaroni and cheese and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Favorite restaurant: Longhorn Steakhouse. The steak, sweet potato and salad combo is one of my favorite meals for the night before a big game.

Proudest sports moment: Going undefeated in the regular season in my senior soccer season and becoming the career assists leader at New Albany.

Sport I’d like to try someday: I want to try to become a better golfer.

Story behind my uniform number: Our school has a tradition of passing down the No. 10 jersey from a graduating senior to a promising team leader for the next season. I was the first player to receive the jersey for my junior and senior season and wore No. 10 for two seasons.

Favorite athlete: LeBron James, because of his accomplishments on and off the court and his ability to selflessly give back to the community.

Inspiration: I am inspired every day by my parents. The way they carry themselves and put our success ahead of themselves inspires me to be the best student, athlete and person I can be.

Dream job: It’s my dream to be an executive for a professional sports team in the U.S. Place I’d like to travel: I want to travel to Europe to sight-see and watch soccer. The atmospheres at European soccer stadiums are a completely different experience than in America, and I would love to witness this firsthand in different countries.

Something most people don’t know about me: The decision to take over a public speaking organization was difficult and challenging for me. As someone who feared speaking in front of the class in ninth grade, I became more comfortable talking in front of the people to the point that I gave a speech with confidence in front of 2,000 people on my last day of high school.

How I relax: I normally take a hot shower, then grab a snack and watch either Netflix or videos on YouTube.

Prized possession: My signed Playbill

from the musical “Be More Chill.” I went to New York City in March to run at New Balance Nationals and was able to see “Be More Chill.” I had been a fan for years.

Favorite book: “1984,” by George Orwell. I find Orwell’s perspective and analysis of the world fascinating.

Favorite movies: Probably one of the “Avengers” or “Iron Man” movies. I am a huge Marvel fan.

Favorite television show: “The Office” is a great show if I want to relax or laugh, and it’s extremely quotable.

Favorite musicians: Twenty One Pilots, specifically Tyler Joseph. He has a talent for writing deep lyrics but masking them in upbeat melodies.

Go-to website: Google has everything I could need.

Favorite home-cooked meal: My mom always makes me potato gnocchi with vegetables and bread rolls the night before big races. I think the rest of my family has gotten tired of it, but I’m too superstitious to give it up.

Favorite restaurant: Olive Garden has soup, salad, breadsticks and pasta, my

go-to meal no matter the restaurant.

Guilty pleasure: Ben and Jerry’s mint chocolate cookie ice cream. I can eat almost a whole pint in one sitting, so I only get it every now and then.

Proudest sports moment: Receiving All-Ohio honors at the cross country state championships my senior year.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Rock climbing or bouldering seems difficult but also rewarding.

Favorite athlete: Courtney Dauwalter is an ultramarathon runner who often competes in multi-day races (100 to 300 miles) where she has demonstrated the strength of women by usually beating most male runners and frequently winning the overall race.

Person I’d like to meet: Alan Turing, who made tremendous contributions to the studies of mathematics and computer science.

Dream job: Something involving mathematics and computer science where I am able to work at solving problems and can contribute to a greater cause.

Least-favorite household chore: Folding laundry. I can sort clothes, wash them, move them to the dryer and take them upstairs, but I hate having to fold them, especially when I know I’m going to just unfold and wear them again.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: It’s silly, but I can never get my oatmeal consistency right. It’s always way too thick and dry or too thin and soggy, so I normally opt for an English muffin instead.

Favorite subject: Computer science. The combination of logic, technology and a little bit of math is the perfect combination to keep me challenged and interested in a way no other class has.

Least-favorite subject: Any life science in general (biology, chemistry, etc.) because despite the great teachers I’ve had, I’m just not that interested in the content.

How I relax: Honestly, just coming home and not having anything to do

is a blessing. The only time this is possible is during meals, so to answer the question: eating.

Prized possessions: I have a keffiyeh head scarf and pakol hat that one of my great friends and mentors brought back from Afghanistan. He served multiple tours in that country, and these items are great mementos.

Favorite book: Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” has become the basis for a lot of my philosophy. It is an interesting read, especially considering the circumstances in which he wrote the text.

Favorite movie: “Good Will Hunting” is among a long list of great movies I

consider favorites. The plot and acting from a great cast make it stand out.

Favorite television show: “Game of Thrones,” but this recent season disappointed me beyond measure. So let’s say “Game of Thrones,” seasons 1 through 7.

Favorite musician: Robert Plant. Not only is he the lead singer of iconic Led Zeppelin, but his voice is one of the greatest and most distinctive ever, making him by far my favorite.

Go-to website: YouTube. I’ve spent more hours than I can count watching pointless videos to distract me from studying — but equally as many for

Favorite subject: Latin, because I had

Least-favorite subject: The one that gives me trouble is physics, which I’d better pick up quickly if I want to be an engineer. Physics is challenging and confusing, but it feels super good when I finally get a problem correct.

How I relax: I go out in nature and set up my hammock. It’s in my car at all times, and I love taking accidental naps and having peaceful jam sessions in it.

Prized possessions: I love wearing Chacos sandals; they are a necessity no matter what season it is.

Favorite book: “Jane Eyre,” by Charlotte Bronte. I loved reading it in English class for the beginnings of feminist thought emerging, and it also has a thrilling love triangle that keeps me at the edge of my seat.

Favorite movie: I have a passion for romantic comedies and a long list of favorites. “When Harry Met Sally” is at the top of the list.

Favorite television show: “Friends.” In my own group of friends, each person identifies with one of the characters of the TV show. I am definitely the Monica of our group.

Favorite musician: Kanye West’s lyrical wordplay is awesome, and his raps are downright iconic.

Go-to website: There are so many different types of content and creators on YouTube, but I mainly love watching comedy or lifestyle videos.

Essential app: I cannot do without Messages. I’m not a huge social media person, so I text all my friends to see what they’re up to.

Favorite home-cooked meal: Turkey tacos topped with avocado, salsa, lettuce and peppers. My mom makes turkey tacos on a biweekly basis.

My cooking specialty: I make avocado toast for breakfast frequently. I start with bread from the farmers market, then a good ripe avocado, freshly cracked salt and pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. So easy but so good.

Favorite restaurant: Chick-fil-A. I always get the deluxe chicken sandwich, no cheese, with waffle fries and a strawberry milkshake.

Guilty pleasure: I occasionally watch “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

Proudest sports moment: In my junior year we beat New Albany to finish an undefeated season in field hockey, which had never been done in Granville history.

Sport I’d like to try someday: Tennis. It seems to require a lot of skill I don’t have, but it seems like a fun and social sport.

Favorite athlete: Cedi Osman of the Cleveland Cavaliers has grown a lot as a player, and he is fun to watch.

Dream job: Being an environmental engineer using the power of math and science and a decent amount of people skills to help save the planet through renewable energies.

Place I’d like to travel: Florence, Italy.

My sister is studying abroad there in the fall, and I’m pretty jealous.

Something most people don’t know about me: I have a small sliver missing from the cartilage of my ear. It is an unusual birthmark that has no impact on my hearing whatsoever.

Least-favorite household chore: Cleaning the shower. I’m honestly just terrible at it and I somehow always end up accidentally splashing water on the bathroom floor.

Something I can’t get right no matter how hard I try: I cannot correctly identify a sunrise. No matter what time of the day it is, I always call it a sunset for reasons unknown to me.

Words to leave by: It be like that sometimes.

Favorite subject: Chemistry, because I enjoy learning about the different experiments that were used to discover atomic particles.

Least-favorite subject: It would have to be calculus. It’s very difficult and the class was held right after lunch so I was always tired for it.

How I relax: I like to kick back in my hammock or even just relax on the couch and watch a good movie or show on TV. Prized possession: A jar of sand and seashells from a vacation to Myrtle

Beach last year with my family and girlfriend. They all have supported me so much and this is something that will remind me of a memory we all got to share together.

Favorite book: “The Martian,” by Andy Weir, is a story of survival on Mars and the perseverance it takes. I think this can be used in life, as well.

It has the message of never giving up even in the worst moments because you can still come out on top.

Favorite movies: It’s hard to pick one, so I chose all three: My favorites are the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. I loved every one of them when they came out.

Favorite television show: “SpongeBob

SquarePants.” I mean, it’s a classic.

What’s not to love about it?

Favorite musicians: Thomas Rhett, Avicii and Post Malone.

Story behind my uniform number: My football number is 28 and that was my brother’s number when he played in high school. When I was able to choose a number, I excitedly chose his old number.

Favorite athlete: Peyton Manning was always humble and classy off the football field and yet an all-star on the field.

Inspiration: My parents are always so busy yet still have time to be there for all of their kids and support me through all of my athletic events.

Dream job: Working as a physical therapist for a college sports team.

Place I’d like to travel: Australia, because I want to see kangaroos in the wild and explore the Outback.

Something most people don’t know about me: I play three musical instruments: piano, guitar and ukulele.

Least-favorite household chore: Vacuuming, because the vacuum noise is annoying and it takes a while.

It’s a safe bet that Lou Berliner would be proud to have a park named after him, especially one that celebrates amateur sports so extensively.

Berliner Park just south of Downtown is the largest softballdiamond complex in the country, with 31 permanent fields over 209 acres.

But I’m guessing that Berliner, who covered high school and amateur sports for The Lou Berliner Dispatch for 44 years, would be just as proud to have an award named after him that each spring is presented to a coach, administrator or official who has made a long and lasting impact on high school sports in central Ohio.

A Columbus native, Berliner worked at The Dispatch from 1931 until his retirement in 1975. He died at age 73 on July 13, 1984, one week after suffering a heart attack. Within three months, the Southview Park athletic complex on Greenlawn Avenue was renamed in his honor.

Before the next school year, The Dispatch announced that it, too, would recognize Berliner’s long career by awarding a trophy in his name to “central Ohio’s most outstanding coach.”

Beginning in 1985, that award was presented at the newspaper’s

annual Scholar-Athlete banquet, an offshoot of The Dispatch’s AllSports banquet for high schools that Berliner had created decades before. Newark Catholic football coach J.D. Graham was the first recipient of the award.

Over the years, the parameters of the award morphed to honor not only successful championship coaches, but anyone associated with high school athletics who made deep and positive impacts in their schools and communities.

Thus began a tradition of celebrating the careers and works of many of the finest teachers, coaches and administrators who have made life better for high school athletes and fans in central Ohio.

That tradition continues this year with the selection of Jim Callahan as the 2019 winner of the Lou Berliner Award.

Callahan recently completed his 36th season as swimming and water polo coach at Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne high schools. He was inducted into the Ohio High School Swimming Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999, and was named state coach of the year three times and Central District coach of the year 11 times. His Worthington team won the 1989 state championship.
