Here’s what’s new at the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure

By Hannah Nowacki Komen Columbus Intern There’s some exciting changes to this year’s Komen Columbus Race for the Cure and we want to make sure you are in-the-know and are ready on Race day!

• Survivor ceremony: New timeand location- The ceremony will take place before the Race starts this year. The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. and will be located on the south plaza of City Hall or the corner of Broad and Front Streets.

• New Race start time is 8:45 a.m. in the same location - Front and Elm Streets, just north of City Hall.

• Remembrance Wall - We want to remember those loved ones who were taken too early from us with a large display of photos at our Remembrance Wall. If you did not select this option when you initially registered, please contact the Komen Columbus office at race@komencolumbus.org and

they will be in touch to help you submit a picture of your loved one.

• Food Trucks! - To keep everyone fueled up and ready to take on Race day, there will be a variety of food trucks available. Bring your appetite and your wallet as all of the food trucks are graciously donating 15% of proceeds from their sales on Race day to Komen Columbus. At the Race will be: Sticky Finger Foods, Mojo Tago 2.0, Sophie’s Gourmet Pierogi, The Cheesy Truck, Pitabilities, Britt’s Sweet Shop, and Crumbz Cakery.

Yum! • Thunder Tunnel - Has a new location this year! Check out hunadreds of motorcycles on the Broad Street Bridge. This way, all participants will be able to witness this one-of-a-kind experience.

Volunteer Spotlight

Ashley Shipley, After Party for the Cure Chair

By Hannah Nowacki Komen Columbus Intern Before the crowds begin to gather on Race day, there are many volunteers who have spent several months planning and organizing to make certain the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure is a premier event in central Ohio.

Ashely Shipley knows firsthand what it takes to help make the Race successful. She is one of the many volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready to go on Race day. Ashley returns to volunteer year after year because she says she enjoys working with the others who are dedicated to Komen’s mission and she enjoys the Komen staff, who are always appreciative for the help.

Another motivating factor that inspires Ashley to volunteer is having two breast cancer survivors in her family; her grandmother Joetta and her Aunt Becky. Ashley said that seeing her Aunt Becky go through treatment really hit home and made her realize what this

SHIPLEY Continued from page 3 recalls Ashley. “Within the first mile I remember seeing an elderly gentleman in front of me. As I started to tell myself that my 23-year-old legs needed to pick up the pace, I read a sign on the back of his shirt. He was racing to celebrate the memory of his wife who passed away from breast cancer.”

Ashley said that it was in that moment she understood that the Race means different things to different people.

“As I looked around at everyone racing toward the same goal and running away the pain breast cancer had caused in their life, my priority no longer became about running.”

“I ended up keeping pace with the gentleman for the rest of the Race as a small gesture that he wasn’t alone. I have signed up for the Race every year since.”

Ashley and her friend, Hana Bieliauskas, would wake up around 3 a.m. on Race day to pink-up the course downtown.

Ashley is excited to once again be part of the Race for the Cure.She feels proud that Columbus is home to the largest Race for the Cure in the country and that this year, the Race has three strong survivors who are its honorary chairs.

“I love the strength and positivity of Maria Durant, Robyn Haines, and Tracy Townsend. I think the fact that news anchors from three competing stations coming together proves just how remarkable our community is.”
