industry spotlight: Agriculture

Ohio ag is more than just ‘cows and plows’

By Carolyn Dix Remer Dispatch Media Group Who has interacted with agriculture today? Bruce McPheron likes to ask this question at speaking engagements.

However, not many people raise their hands — until he asks his follow-up question.

“Who’s eaten lunch today?”

This one usually garners a few laughs, said McPheron, dean of the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University. But it’s telling of the importance of agriculture and the role it plays in our everyday lives.

“Every person on Earth aspires to be involved in our disciplines three times a day,” he said. Agriculture is responsible for the food we eat — and that’s not all.

“Stop and think about what agriculture provides us,” said David Daniels, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. “The food on your plate, the wood in your house, the cotton shirt on your back, energy for our cars.

Agriculture provides us with absolutely every necessity in life.”

And it steers Ohio’s economy with jobs.

“Ohio has a really rich agricultural portfolio,” McPheron said. It is ranked nationally in the dairy, beef, poultry and pork industries, he added.

Local farmers may be known for their soybeans and corn crops — the two top crops in Ohio — but they are also known for harvesting tomatoes, cabbage and orchard stock, like apples, grapes and oranges, Daniels said.

In fact, “agriculture is the No. 1 industry in Ohio, responsible for $105 billion in economic activity,” he added.

The agriculture industry as a whole — from the machines and materials it takes to plant crops, like tractors and fertilizer, to getting food to the consumer — is responsible for one in seven jobs in Ohio, McPheron noted.

That includes food-processing plants, which are considered a part of Ohio’s agriculture industry, McPheron said. Campbell’s Soup operates a plant in Napolean, and Dannon Yogurt has one in Minster.

“This is a big, big deal in Ohio in terms of the food system,” McPheron noted.

And, Ohio’s agriculture industry ranks high in categories that even lifelong state residents may not realize.

Do you know who the leading producer of Swiss cheese is in the United States?

That would be Ohio, Daniels said.

But it is important to remember that agriculture involves more than growing or processing food, McPheron said.

Agriculture entails how a farmer markets to and supplies grocery stores and restaurants with products.

Agriculture is also about nutrition and how foods can keep people healthier, such as helping to fight cancer. It is about getting water to those who need it, and it’s also about how to keep the water clean, McPheron said.

waterways play a crucial part in Ohio’s agriculture business, noting that ports around the state help move products.

It is an industry that is constantly evolving and full of opportunity.

“There’s food science, agricultural engineering and big data. There is fighting cancer through the foods that we eat, and there is fixing the problems with water quality,” McPheron said.

There is also the problem of food insecurity — not knowing where your next meal will come from. This difficulty affected one in six Ohioans at some point last year, he said.

McPheron noted that the wide range of issues and concerns that fall under agriculture are part of what draws students to Ohio State’s ag college.

He considers the increase in food awareness in general — due in part to the Food Network, social media and

the growing interest in sustainability — to have piqued more student interest in agriculture.

Even a new major has been added to meet the evolving interests in the industry — the Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability (EEDS) major already has 250 students in only its third academic year.

He also believes that an abundance of job prospects and higher starting salaries — some in excess of $50,000 — attract students as well.

Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is about 3,600 undergraduate and graduate students across all of OSU’s campuses, McPheron said.

Whether its food security, clean water, food science, sustainability or fighting cancer, each of these issues and concerns are a part of agriculture, and they all play a role in the future of the agriculture industry.

It is time to stop thinking about agriculture as “cows and plows,” McPheron said. “We’ve moved well beyond that.”

Celebrate Local gives them a huge platform to raise their brand awareness,” Maybruck said.

“We love our locals. They are so important to us,” Stan said, adding that by being their retailer, their members are better able to focus on creating their products.

In addition to selling their members’ products, Celebrate Local helps with their business needs, including social media, product packaging and e-commerce platforms, she said.

And, just like they support local businesses, Maybruck noted that Celebrate Local could not exist without the help of The Easton Community Foundation, Easton Town Center’s nonprofit arm, and Easton’s ownership “that firmly believes in giving opportunities to local start-ups.”

Celebrate Local started as a project that turned into a business, Stan said. It has been in its current location since February 2013. Maybruck and Stan are interested in opening more stores in the future if the right opportunity presents itself, but to be successful, they need a location near a tourist area with a lot of density, Stan said.

Brownie Points scoring big Brownie business that started from scratch is flying high

By Carolyn Dix Remer Dispatch Media Group Have a sweet tooth? Brownie Points delivers.

Not your everyday brownie business, Brownie Points is making a national name for itself. The Rachael Ray Show and Today have featured the Columbus-based company for its creative gourmet brownies — like chocolate caramel sea salt and sticky cinnamon bun brownies — as well as other delightful treats, including gourmet popcorn, chocolate-covered grahams and pretzel twists.

Lisa Rothstein King, founder and president of Brownie Points, is a Columbus native and graduate of The Ohio State University, but it was during years she spent in Cleveland as an elementary school teacher that her love for brownies turned into her career.

“Brownies were always my favorite dessert,” she said. She would bake brownies from mixes after school for fun, adding different toppings to invent new concoctions.

She set out to create her own recipe for a delicious, “fudgy” brownie, and after six months, she succeeded. She started handing them out, and received rave reviews.

After finishing the school year, she started baking brownies out of her kitchen, partnering with her sister-in-law Lisa Berliner to manage the burgeoning brownie company.

King moved back to Columbus, sold the company in 1998 and then bought it back following her divorce, starting it over from scratch in 2000. She went from subcontracting the baking to keep up with demand to eventually moving into a small 600-square-foot facility.

And to get the word out about her mouthwatering goodies, she simply sent samples to companies.

“I was so passionate and knew people would buy it,” she said. They just had to “put it in their mouths,” she added.

It worked.

Today Brownie Points operates out of a 5,500-square-foot facility in Gahanna and is “bursting at the seams” as the company continues to grow, King said.

They are starting to consider moving to a larger facility.

Columbus-area retailer Victoria’s Secret has gifted Brownie Point confections to its best customers, and American Eagle has treated customers to Brownie Points as a gift with purchase. Delta Airlines has even taken Brownie Points to new heights, buying products wholesale to give to its first-class patrons.

“I love Ohio. I think it has so many great companies, resources and products,” King said, adding that Brownie Points uses locally-sourced products when possible, such as corn from Ohio farms for its posh popcorn.

How Cameron Mitchell and Gary Callicoat helped make Columbus a foodie town

By Carolyn Dix Remer Dispatch Media Group Historically, Columbus has been known as a fast-food town. It is the headquarters of drive-through giants like Wendy’s and White Castle, as well as a test market for up-and-coming fast-food ventures.

But increasingly, Columbus is becoming more well known for some of the best fine- and casual-dining eateries anywhere.

Drive along High Street in the Short North, and while you will still see a White Castle, there is also a slew of Cameron Mitchell restaurants, including The Pearl and The Guild House.

Cameron Mitchell, the man behind Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, and Gary Callicoat, president of The Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern, have changed the restaurant landscape, filling holes in the Columbus food scene with innovative, modern and — more importantly — delicious restaurant concepts that have been more than just successful.

They have changed the way residents and visitors dine out in Columbus.

Mitchell was born in Columbus.

He grew up in Arlington and still lives there today. With the exception of the two years he spent at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, he has lived in Columbus his entire life.

But how has he become so successful? By being passionate about his business, treating people well and by bringing Columbus the kinds of restaurants he likes to dine at himself, he said. “I opened my first steakhouse in Columbus because I was sitting in a great steakhouse in Washington D.C., and I said, Columbus needs a great steakhouse,’� Mitchell recalled. So he opened one Downtown. “There was nothing there. Third Street was the main drag going

through Downtown,� he said, adding that with the convention center and hotels, “I knew that Columbus needed it down there.�

Although he has since sold it, Mitchell has continued to open new restaurants and try new concepts.

As a Columbus lifer, his understanding and eye for real estate have helped him hone in not only on restaurant concepts that can be successful in Columbus, but where they can be successful.

When a prime location in the Short North opened up, Mitchell leased it, without even having a restaurant idea in mind when he did.

Seeing the rise in popularity in gastropubs — restaurants that serve highend food and drinks — he created The Pearl for the space.

There was a time when Olentangy River Road was a “dead road,� but Mitchell had the foresight to see the area’s potential — close to hospitals, Downtown and the freeway. “I know the market. I grew up here,� he said. And he knew that eventually there would be a lot of development in the area. So, he created Cap City Diner. “Turns out it’s been our busiest restaurant since the day it opened,

Carmen Electra was born Tara Leigh Patrick in Sharonville, a Cincinnati suburb.

Though she once had a recording contract with Prince’s record label, she grew to fame as a model and actress on the TV shows Baywatch and Singled Out and has been in several films.

Annie Oakley was a sharpshooter who shot to stardom in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Oakley was born in Darke County — on the western border of the state — and lived in Cincinnati for a time with her husband.

Arsenio Hall Arsenio Hall took over latenight TV in the early 1990s as the host of The Arsenio Hall Show from 19891994. The Clevelandborn comedian attended Ohio University and then

This entrepreneurial spirit and understanding of Columbus and its food scene have allowed Mitchell to proudly put his name behind a dozen successful restaurant concepts, including a catering company, Cameron Mitchell Premier Events, and Ocean Prime, a concept he has taken to cities across the country.

“Cameron had a big part in putting Columbus on the map” in the food world, Callicoat said.

George Steinbrenner Many people instantly associate the name George Steinbrenner with New York, as he was the very visible and wealthy owner of the New York Yankees for 37 years. But, Rocky River, a suburb of Cleveland, was the first place Steinbrenner called home.

Gloria Steinem Gloria Steinem was born in Toledo, and she is best known as a political activist and leader of the feminist movement in the 1960s. She founded Ms. magazine and wrote for New York magazine, and in 2013 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Ted Turner

Steven Spielberg is best known for being a Hollywood heavyweight, but he was born in Cincinnati.

He has directed some of the world’s most wellknown and highest-grossing movies, including Jurassic Park and Jaws, and some of the most beloved, like E.T.

Ted Turner has made an international name for himself as a media mogul, having founded the Turner Broadcasting System and CNN. Even though he would later be the owner of the Atlanta Braves, Turner was born in Cincinnati.

He would know.

He and Mitchell met when Mitchell dated Callicoat’s sister. They both like to joke that Mitchell’s relationship with his sister didn’t last, but theirs did.

Born in Florida, Callicoat moved to Columbus in 1982. He attended The Ohio State University — though he never graduated — and ended up working with Mitchell at the 55 Restaurant Group, where Mitchell worked before creating Cameron Mitchell Restaurants.

After his divorce, Callicoat left the restaurant business for about a year and a half, but found himself drawn back to it. “I couldn’t stand being away from it,” he said. “It’s my pas-

sion.”

So, 20 years ago he went to work for Mitchell, who had by then started his own restaurants.

They had talked about Callicoat having his own restaurant one day, and about 13 years ago, the opportunity presented itself when an investor in some of Mitchell’s restaurants asked Mitchell to help him open a neighborhood sports bar and restaurant in Dublin — The Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern.

Callicoat took over operations of the restaurant, while Cameron Mitchell Restaurants provided the back-office support.

As it turns out, The Rusty Bucket was a huge success.

Wilson Sporting Goods may be based in Chicago, but it has a football factory in Ada, Ohio. But, this is not just any football factory. Every NFL game ball that has ever appeared in the Super Bowl is produced here.

The factory employs 130 people and produces 700,000 footballs annually, and this year it made the game footballs for the first College Football Playoff National Championship.

“The day of the championship was Ohio State Day at the factory, said Dan Riegle, plant manager at the Wilson football factory. “It meant a lot to us to have the Buckeyes carry our balls into the championship,” he said.

Spangler Candy Co.

Dum Dums lollipops are made right here in Ohio. Along with candy canes, marshmallow Circus Peanuts and other sweet treats, Dum Dums pops are made by the Spangler Candy Co. in Bryan, a city of about 10,000 in the northwestern part of the state.

In 1906, Arthur Spangler bought the Gold Leaf Baking Powder Co., moved it to Bryan and renamed it Spangler Manufacturing Co. Today, Spangler operates a 500,000-square-foot facility and creates more than 12 million Dum Dums everyday. It also operates a museum store and offers tours.

“Word hit the street, and we got an unbelievable response,” Callicoat said.

There are now Rusty Bucket Taverns throughout Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Florida, with more on the way.

Callicoat has high expectations for the restaurant scene in Columbus as chefs and restaurants continue to raise the bar to create even better dining experiences for patrons.

“I think it is still going to get better. I think you’re already seeing that happen,” said Callicoat, adding that dining establishments in Columbus are getting closer to being right up there with the likes of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
