After a four-week search for a football coach, Olentangy High School athletics director Jay Wolfe thinks he found the right candidate in Mark Solis. Solis, 40, accepted Wolfe’s offer to replace Ed Terwilliger on June 7 and was expected to meet with the players June 10. Solis was 7-13 at Lorain the past two seasons but has a career record of 101-50 and six playoff appearances in 14 seasons. His coaching résumé includes stints at Ashland Crestview (1999-2003), Elyria (2004-06) and Twinsburg (2007-10). “He has won at all levels, from small schools (Crestview is in Division V) to big schools (Elyria, Lorain and Twinsburg are in Division I),” Wolfe said. “That caught our eye right away. We also have a teaching opening that fits. He was one of the first two in our final five (candidates), and right away then he was in our top two. We wanted to have somebody in by June 7, in time for the summer.” Wolfe said between 40 and 50 candidates applied to succeedTerwilliger, who announced his retirement May 9 after compiling a 138-114 record in 24 seasons at Olentangy. “A couple years ago, my wife and I discussed moving to central Ohio if the opportunity presented itself,” Solis said. “This is a great opportunity. I am liking what I see in the program, especially the people. We have the chance to take what Ed did
No sooner had senior Katelyn Daniels of the Olentangy Orange High School girls track and field team celebrated defending her title in the discus during the Division I state meet held June 7 and 8 at Ohio State than she had to turn her attention to defending her title in the shot put. “This is the most competitive girls (shot put) field in the entire nation,” Daniels said when asked what to expect. “I really don’t know how it will go. Hopefully I will (set a personal record), and that will be enough. But nothing is guaranteed.” She did record a new personalbest distance, and it was enough to make the field not so competitive. On the heels of winning the discus in a personal-record 161 feet, 7 inches to finish well ahead of runner-up Kaylee Antill of Dresden Tri-Valley (148-4), Daniels threw a state-record 512 to easily win the shot put. The previous mark of 50-10 was set by Ashley Muffet of North Canton Hoover in 2005. “It’s like the most surreal feeling. It’s really incredible,” said

Pioneers’ Napper excels in state meet By DAVE PURPURA THISWEEKSPORTS.COM
The introduction of four wheelchair events into high school track and field this year brought questions that often accompany new ventures. But the Division I state meet June 7 and 8 at Ohio State couldn’t have gone more according to form for senSOLIS >> A20 ior Travis Napper of the Olentangy
Orange boys team. Napper finished where he was seeded in three of the four events. He placed third in the shot put (16 feet, 11 3/4 inches), sixth in both the 400 meters (1 minute, 22.29 seconds) and 800 (3:05.72) and seventh in the 100 (22.05). He exceeded his expectations in the 400, in which he was ranked seventh among eight qualifiers. “I tried to get my best in everything,
of course, but (the) shot (put) has always been my cup of tea,” said Napper, whose best throw came on the last of his three attempts. “My goal was just to get third or better. All it was today was the technique and the work I’ve put in all season.” Entering state, Napper’s best throw in the shot put was 14-3 1/2, which he achieved April 30 in a dual meet against Mount Vernon. His other pre-
vious bests coming in were 23.21 in the 100, 1:30.77 in the 400 and 3:24.5 in the 800. There were six state competitors in the shot put and 800 and 10 in the 100. “Travis set personal records in everything he did, and that’s exactly what we were aiming for,” Pioneers coach Buck Weaver said. “We had so
