Turbocharging is proving to be the most popular way to deliver maximum horsepower while increasing fuel economy.

Vehicles that once relied on V-8 engines for propulsion are now being fitted with turbocharged V-6s, and many V-6-powered cars have converted to turbo four-cylinder engines. There are even a few models that feature three-cylinder turbo engines, a development unheard of a couple of years ago.

These trends, along with the slow-but-steady growth of gaselectric hybrid and pure-electric power systems are helping to ease drivers into an era of alternatives to traditional fossil-fuel-burning cars and trucks.

“There’s a big push for conserving the world with lower gas mileage, higher fuel efficiency and hybrid models,” Falcone said.

At this rate, the slew of new 2015 models available today will seem tame compared to what will be offered in the not-too-distant future.

For 2015, manufacturers are offering advances in communications and safety technologies like never before. Content that was only to be found inside expensive high-end vehicles is now trickling down to more basic transportation at a fast clip.

“Historically, the more expensive cars have the new tech first,” said Rhett Ricart, owner of Ricart Automotive Group in southeast Columbus. But now, cars across all price ranges are equipped with new technology or offer those features as add-on options, he said.

These features allow you to keep in even closer touch with the outside world (think Wi-Fi), while experiencing greater peace of mind that you’ll arrive safely (think blind-spot monitoring) at your destination.

Of course, some of the more advanced items remain optional, but at least buyers have more choices when selecting the ones that they want and can afford.

More and more, automotive designers and engineers are developing innovative ways to reduce the weights of the latest crop of cars as a means to increase fuel efficiency. Lightweight composites (plastic and carbon fiber) are being used in their construction. Alumi-

Modern extravagance: Defining the ‘new’ luxury car With lower price points and an array of options, luxury has become more affordable

Is it the brand, the price, the features?

In today’s automotive landscape, the lines have been blurred. Local dealers said luxury has more to do with the overall customer experience — the way a person feels driving the vehicle and how he or she is treated when purchasing or servicing it— than it does with the options the car comes equipped with.

Brands traditionally associated with luxury cars, such as Mercedes or Lexus, are offering cars at lower price points, like the Mercedes CLA-Class or the Lexus CT 200h hatchback, both of which start around $30,000.

At the same time, mainstream brands, such as Ford and Chevrolet, are offering tricked-out cars with myriad options and gadgets one expects from high-end manufacturers.

Trucks are also getting more sophisticated electronics, he said.

“The big thing is in the technology with the navigation and information systems,” Snyder said. “All of the connectivity that you would see in a $100,000 car, you see in a truck.”

As a result, trucks are appealing to a wider audience.

“Lots of customers are looking at trucks to be their everyday vehicles,” Bagby said.

Snyder agreed. “You typically think of trucks as being for construction.

Now we’re seeing families getting trucks.”

But just because they are getting more sophisticated in their looks and capabilities, don’t think they are getting any less powerful.

“They’re coming out with better components,” Bagby said. “The tow capacity has climbed with each new model.”

As cars and trucks become more sophisticated and the differences what they offer the consumer get fewer and farther between, the old definition of what classifies a car “luxury” may have to hit the road.

“In this day and age, luxury is often in the eye of the beholder,” Falcone said.

“Our job is to make the ownership experience the same for everyone,” he said. Regardless of the vehicle, conveniences including late service hours, loaner cars and pickup and delivery are what make the difference in the ownership experience, meeting that higher luxury standard, he added.

Trucks are also getting in on the luxury label these days.

If you haven’t stepped into the cabin of a truck lately, you might be surprised by what you see.

“There has been such a huge change,” said Jim Snyder, general manager for Dan Tobin Buick GMC in Dublin. Trucks were “more utilitarian before, and now they’re becoming luxury.”

Scott said the Tahoe is very popular as a family vehicle, and the Silverado has many electronics that come standard or are available as add-ons, like 4G LTE Wi-Fi. From a quieter cabin to built-in storage to comfortable seating, “It’s not the normal truck,” Snyder said.

Truck exteriors are getting an upgrade as well with more chrome and nicer looking trim, said Andy Bagby, new vehicle sales manager for Chesrown Chevrolet Buick GMC in Delaware.

So, what exactly is luxury?

“Luxury started with leather,” said Greg Scott, sales consultant with Byers Chevrolet in Downtown Columbus.

“Then it was heated seats, then heated and cooled seats, and then electronics.”

Now most car manufacturers offer all of the above along with a slew of electronics across a wide range of price points.

Many of the electronics, such as rear-view cameras, back-up sensors and traction control are “pretty standard now in a $20,000 to $30,000 car,” said Rhett Ricart, owner of Ricart Automotive Group in southeast Columbus.

“Technology is going down in cost everyday,” he said. It is no longer exclusive to high-end brands.

“You can climb into a $25,000 car and have features that a $150,000 car does not,” said Michael Falcone, highline sales manager for Midwestern Auto Group in Dublin.

Falcone said luxury today is more about a standard associated with the overall owner experience.

At MAG, customers shopping for Volkswagens are right next to ones shopping for Aston Martins. As such, Falcone said the dealership wants both customers to have the same feel-

Hot news for 2015: Acura combines two of its sedans into a single, more versatile model.

Overview: The TLX is Acura’s latest entry-luxury sports sedan that competes in a segment it practically invented in the late 1990s. But with changing times and increased competition, Honda’s premium division has developed a new lineup strategy for 2015. To that end, the TLX replaces both the TSX and larger TL models.

Compared to the latter, overall length is 3.7 inches less, thanks to a reduction in front and rear overhang. It’s also about an inch QDUURZHU DQG WKH URRÀLQH LV VOLJKWO\ ORZHU The wheelbase remains identical to that of the TL, ensuring adequate legroom for rear-seat riders. Under the hood, the TLX is mostly OLNH WKH RXWJRLQJ 76; +HUH IDQV ZLOO ¿QG D similar, but brand-new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 206 horsepower. It’s mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automated manual dual-clutch transmission, called a

Hot news for 2015: Audi presses the play button on a new entry-luxury sedan; convertible and sporty S3 also arrive; A3 wagon returns for 2016 powered by a turbodiesel engine.

Overview: Luxury-car buyers, it seems, are discovering what many of us have known for years: that small sedans are fun to drive.

Especially those containing plenty of amenities. The A3 was originally offered here only as a wagon.

However, for 2015, Audi has introduced a brand-new A3 sedan and is also extending the line to include a cabriolet (convertible) and an A3 E-tron plug-in hybrid hatchback later in the model year.

The sedan pretty much sticks to the larger A4/A6 styling script with a long hood and short deck plus sharp sheet-metal creases in between to keep things interesting. Along with a new body style, the A3 has been given a new platform that extends the front wheels

forward and widens the distance between the front and rear wheels for added passenger space. Base front-wheel-drive models use a turbocharged 170-horsepower 1.8-liter fourcylinder, with a turbocharged 220-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder on the option sheet.

As well, a more powerful 290-horsepower version of the 2.0 is installed in the sporty S3. Connected to each engine is a six-speed automated manual transmission with rapid upshifts and downshifts. Audi’s Quattro allwheel-drive system is standard with both turbo 2.0 engines, but not with the 1.8. The base A3 comes well equipped with leather seat covers, a panoramic glass sunroof and high-intensity xenon headlights.

Of course, Audi will tempt drivers with an array of options including a navigation system with unique 3-D graphics, light-emitting diode (LED) headlights and a Bang & Olufsen sound package that’s usually found in models costing more than twice that of the A3.

Hot news for 2015: This tall wagon hatchback is a compromise between sedan and wagon. It delivers more space and all-weather functionality than one might think.

Overview: Based on BMW’s 4 Series coupe platform, the X4 draws inspiration from the X6 that has been around since the 2008 model year. Both could be called “tall sportXWLOLW\ SDVVHQJHU FDUV ZLWK VORSLQJ URRĂ€LQHV and large hatch openings instead of trunks.â€?

BMW prefers to call it a Sport Activity Coupe.

Compared to the X6, the X4 is close to 8 inches shorter in length, is 4 inches narrower and has 5 fewer inches between the front and rear wheels. It’s also lighter on its wheels by more than 650 pounds.

Beyond people pampering, the X4’s key DWWULEXWH LV VWRZDJH ÀH[LELOLW\ :LWK WKH UHDU seat occupied there’s still several golf bags’ worth of room. When more room is required the 40:20:40 split-folding second-row bench increases the load space.

The base X4 Xdrive28i has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the Xdrive35i and the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine makes 300 horsepower and 300 poundfeet of torque. Each is connected to an eightspeed automatic transmission. BMW said the X4 with the 2.0 scoots to 60 mph from rest in six seconds while the 3.0 reduces that time to 5.2 seconds. Both engines are equipped with all-wheel drive that shifts torque to the outside rear wheel when turning to maximize traction.

Base content includes a power moonroof and liftgate, eight-way power front seats, backup warning system, high-strength xenon headlights and rain-sensing wipers. Heading the options list is the M Sport grouping that bundles together an aero body kit, plus fancier wheels and exterior/exterior trim, sport seats and a sport suspension. Other packages add a navigation system and premium Harmon Kardon-brand sound system.

Hot news for 2015: Buick’s headliner is the only model aimed at “traditional� buyers, but the LaCrosse still feels youthful. There’s more tech and toys inside, too.

Overview: Despite being launched in 2009, the Buick LaCrosse remains a popular choice for those enjoying retirement. It received a few improvements last year to help keep the fullsize sedan more in line with its siblings. There are LEDs in the headlights and taillights while the front fascia and bumper are gimmick-free.

Drag-reducing grille shutters that close automatically are standard on every model.

The entry-level model retains its mildhybrid electric system to help the 2.4-liter four-cylinder during acceleration. Dubbed eAssist, the electric motor — which replaces the alternator — adds 15 horsepower and 79 pound-feet of torque to the 182-horsepower gasoline engine. It uses lithium-ion batteries that also allow the gasoline engine to shut off at stoplights and regenerate electricity under

braking. Top-line versions stick with the 3.6liter V-6 with 304 horsepower, but front-drive V-6 models use electric power steering.

The LaCrosse is most appreciated inside where its nicely detailed dashboard, console and controls are aging well. The Ultra Luxury package, which uses semi-aniline leather, real Shado Tamo Ash wood and a mixed Sangria/ Ebony color mix, adds some upscale touches.

All LaCrosse models get the new-generation IntelliLink touch-screen radio, while options include a power sliding sunroof, heated cloth or leather front seats, steering-wheel-mounted audio and climate controls and numerous audio-system upgrades.

The well-equipped base model uses 17-inch wheels, but several alloy wheel sizes can be had. New standard features for 2015 include a rear-view camera, four-way adjustable front headrests and an OnStarsubscription-based 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot with a three-month trial.

2015 models getting even more techy

BY CAROLYN DIX DISPATCH ADVERTISING SPECIAL SECTIONS Think of how nice it would be if you could sit back, prop your feet up on the dashboard and let your car drive itself.

“Look mom, no hands!”

We are not there quite yet, but the 2015 vehicle models are steering us in that direction.

Technology is the big buzzword for 2015 in the automotive world, and much of it involves cars taking the wheel to help you be a better driver.

“It’s the safety features that I think are really cool,” said Rhett Ricart, owner of Ricart Automotive Group in southeast Columbus.

Car manufacturers used to make cars that could help save your life in the event of an accident with collapsing steering wheels and airbags, Ricart said. With the new safety features, it is about being proactive “to avoid the accident to begin with.”

Features like blind-spot and cross-traffic alerts are available in more cars. In some Ford models, drivers will find a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert. An indicator

light on the side mirror warns drivers if a car is in their blind spot. In conjunction with BLIS, the cross-traffic alert detects oncoming cars when backing out of a parking spot.

Adaptive cruise control also is available in some of the new Ford and Lincoln models. This system uses radar sensors to maintain a preset distance behind the vehicle in front of it, adjusting as needed if the vehicle in front changes speeds.

Some vehicles, including the Ford Fusion, Ford Explorer, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKT and Lincoln MKZ even have inflatable safety belts for backseats, with an airbag in the belt strap that crosses your chest, he said.

Another available safety feature is a lane-departure warning system, said Michael Falcone, high-line sales manager for Midwestern Auto Group in Dublin.

“If you nod off or slide into the lane next to you, the car will alert you audibly and will put a little movement in the steering wheel” to correct you, he said.

Added Ricart, “Cars have gotten safer and safer and safer with all the technology,” noting these features are even

available in vehicles in lower price ranges.

Andy Bagby, new vehicle sales manager for Chesrown Chevrolet Buick GMC in Delaware, agreed. “The safety features are continually improving,” he said. “We are getting a lot of requests for them.”

Back-up alerts — warnings that you are getting too close to something when driving in reverse — come standard in many models, Bagby said.

This was not the case just a few years ago. There is also the option for a forward-collision alert system if the gap between your car and the car in front of you gets too small, he said.

And you do not have to be a tech-whiz to take advantage of these features.

“The beauty of the technology we have now is it’s all integrated and very userfriendly,” Ricart said. “People can learn it very quickly.”

In addition to safety features, technology is allowing drivers to take their smartphones and tablets on the road like never before with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities.

“The exciting thing is that there are a number of Chevrolets coming out with 4G tech-

nology, including the Cruz, the Malibu and the Impala,” said Greg Scott, sales consultant with Byers Chevrolet near Downtown Columbus.

“The car becomes a mobile hotspot.”

Perhaps the savior of family road trips, up to seven devices can be used at once.

Cars are even using technology to become quieter.

Active noise control works similarly to noise-cancelling headphones.

“It takes noise from outside the car and sends out a sound wave to cancel out that noise,” Ricart said.

Not only are there new features in 2015 models, but many of the features we have seen in previous model years have improved, Bagby said.

For example, a smartphone can be connected to a car instantaneously.

Technology is changing the way we drive, providing modern conveniences and features that keep us safer on the road.

“We are a step closer to not having any drivers in the car. Everything is automatic.

This is really amazing stuff that you would have never thought possible,” Ricart said.

Hot news for 2015: Stronger, faster, lighter best describes the new aluminum-bodied F-Series; retooled from top to bottom, from bumper to tailgate and under the hood.

Overview: The world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up.

It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements, and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 is one heck of a game changer.

The big news is Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels, saving as much as 700 pounds in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions.

All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually lighter.

That reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right?

MPG (CITY/HWY): 17/24 (3.5, 4x2)

Base trucks now come with a 3.5-liter V-6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7liter V-6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional.

Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse power plants: a 3.5-liter twinturbocharged V-6 producing 365 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-liter V-8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque (up from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 that was standard in the way-off-road-capable SVT Raptor (its replacement is expected to arrive by mid-2015).

Inside, the cabin has been transformed and on up-level models approaches luxurycar standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims.

Overview: When it comes to trucks and sport utility vehicles, General Motors tends to do things in pairs. Both Chevrolet and GMC share many similar, but moderately restyled vehicles wearing different nameplates, including the new-for-2015 Canyon and its Chevy iteration, the Colorado.

After being canceled after the 2012 model year, both are back. They’re still smaller and less capable than the full-size GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado, but for many pickup buyers, they have plenty to offer, whether it’s the fourdoor extended-cab with a 62-inch box, or the four-door crew cab that comes with a 50-inch or 62-inch bed.

Each style can be ordered with a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 305-horsepower V-6. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a

six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the V-6. The V-6 comes close to matching the four-cylinder in mpgs — 20/27 for the four-cylinder versus 18/26 for rear-wheel-drive models.

Canyons can be had in base SL, SLE and SLT trim levels. SLEs equipped with the Autotrac (drivers can select four-wheel drive or allow the system to engage automatically) are available with an off-road suspension package, locking rear differential, all-terrain rubber, automatic transmission and hill-descent control.

All Canyons come with a power driver’s seat, corner steps in the rear bumper, locking tailgates and two-tier loading. There is a plethora of options and packages for the Canyon, including leather seats (heated in front), 8-inch touch screen/navigation and a factory-installed spray-on bed liner. For added safety, forwardcollision alert and lane-departure warning features can be added (a rear-vision camera is standard).

Hot news for 2015: Honda’s small carryall has evolved to a point where it could almost pass for a Civic wagon.

Overview: The all-new Fit sticks to a proven formula: Keep the size and weight in check; keep the body lean and spacious; and keep drivers and passengers thinking they’re ensconced in a vehicle that’s larger than it actually is.

Despite being physically and dimensionally similar, the Fit actually looks bigger, thanks to more prominent body creases and fenders that bulge out around the wheel openings.

The wraparound headlight pods integrate with the grille and no longer extend alongside the hood. The taillights are enlarged, and the squared-off liftgate glass helps emphasize the width.

The Fit’s interior remains a marvel of practicality. Passenger volume has been modestly increased and rear-seat legroom lengthened by 3.1 inches, primarily due to the new chassis

and more compact rear suspension.

A new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, compared to 117 horses and 106 pound-feet of torque for the previous 1.5. A six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit (CVT), directs power to the front wheels.

The CVT helps the Fit achieve 33 mpg in the city and 41 on the highway, up from 28/35 ZLWK WKH SUHYLRXV ¿YH VSHHG DXWRPDWLF WKH six-speed manual delivers similar improvements).

Just because it’s a bottom-rung Honda doesn’t mean the Fit lacks for convenience items. The top-line EX-L comes with a power moonroof, multiangle rear-view camera (a basic rear-view camera is standard) leathercovered seats (heated in front) and push-button start. A voice-controlled navigation system can also be ordered for the EX-L.

GENESIS

Hot news for 2015: Hyundai’s latest fullload sedan might make you forget all about Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus and other highranking four-doors.

Overview: Since the 2009 model year, the Genesis sedan has taken up residence at the premium end of Hyundai’s model spectrum (directly below the Equus) and the new-for-2015 edition maintains that spot. The previous Genesis appeared as a compilation of several full-size luxury marques, including the Lexus LS, BMW 5- and 7-series and Mercedes-Benz E- and S-Class sedans.

Although Hyundai retained the Genesis’ overall length to within an inch of the previous design, the distance between the front and rear wheels was increased by 3 inches, resulting in increased space for all passengers. &DUU\LQJ RYHU ZLWK PLQRU PRGL¿FDWLRQ DUH the Genesis’ two power plants. The startingpoint 3.8-liter V-6 is rated at 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque, while the

An eight-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability is standard with both.

Among a host of convenience features is a Smart Trunk that opens automatically whenever someone with the key fob stands near the trunk lid for three seconds.

Hot news for 2015: And now for something completely different: an Italian-American 4x4 that takes Jeep’s off-roading expertise into the small zone.

Overview: The Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s sport utes, and by a long shot. It was designed here, but it’s being built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. The front and rear body overhangs are practically nonexistent, and there’s plenty of space between the tires and the fenders. The vehicle’s narrow width does place a premium on elbow room, but the dash and control panel are nicely designed, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the meaty steering wheel FORVHO\ UHSOLFDWHV ZKDW \RXœOO ¿QG LQ WKH ODUJHU Grand Cherokee.

Base Renegades run with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The nonturbo 2.4-liter puts out 184 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The 1.4 turbo comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while

Front-wheel drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive fourwheel drive is optional.

Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with a low-range 20:1 crawlratio gearing, unique wheels with all-terrain tires plus other off-road goodies. Renegades equipped with either drivetrain should prove thrifty with just 3,000-3,500 pounds to move around. A gas-saving automatic axle disconnect feature for 4x4 models re-engages the rear wheels when maximum traction is required. The base Renegade Sport includes the bare essentials, while the Latitude adds air conditioning, roof rails, fog lights and touchscreen audio and hands-free Bluetooth communications controls. Buyers of the Limited model get dual-zone climate control, heated leather-trimmed seats and 18-inch wheels (16and 17-inchers come on lower trims).

Hot news for 2015: Kia’s new rear-wheeldrive luxury sedan shows its Hyundai roots, but that isn’t a bad thing.

Overview: Hyundai fearlessly jumped into the premium pool when it launched the Equus sedan a few years back, and now the automaker’s Kia division follows suit with the 2015 K900. A good baseline comparison for it would be the Lexus LS460. Both cars are relatively close in size, although the K900 holds a 3-inch edge in wheelbase and has a bit more interior space.

Peeling back the K900’s skin reveals one of the better-looking shortcut-free interiors out there and one that’s totally in sync with its premium-car image. Standard cockpit stuff includes trizone climate control, a navigation system with a 9.2-inch display, power rear sunshade, a foldable rear center armrest with redundant ventilation controls and a 17-speaker, 900-watt sound system.

The base K900 comes with a 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6. When the 420-horsepower

What isn’t offered is all-wheel drive, a feature commonly available in other sedans in this class and one that’s pretty much essential in snowy/icy regions.

Although the K900 is a newcomer to the category, shoppers who know a loaded-up bargain when they spot one should put this fancy Kia on their must-see list.

Hot news for 2015: The RC 350 coupe uses a mash-up of Lexus GS and IS architecture, but the body is all original and can’t-stopstaring gorgeous.

Overview: /H[XVœ ¿UVW IRXU SDVVHQJHU coupe — since the tubby-shaped SC coupe bowed out back in 1999 — looks like a million dollars, which makes it a pretty good deal at less than $45,000.

The car’s slinky, sensuous body features knife-edge aero styling cues starting with its spindle-shaped grille, which runs along the ORZHU ERG\ VLGHV DQG ¿QLVKHV ZLWK D VKDUSO\ creased rear-deck spoiler. The RC is just a bit shorter than the IS sedan, although the car’s ground-hunkering stance suggests otherwise.

The cockpit is richly tailored with goodlooking faux leather seats (real leather is optional) and a thick, grippy steering wheel.

The basic RC starts out with a 3.5-liter V-6 that directs its 306 horsepower to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmis-

Overview: The new-for-2015 MKC faces off against BMW's X3 Mercedes-Benz' GLA and other upscale car-based wagons. Lincoln’s design team started with the Ford Escape platform and created a unique shape.

The MKC’s luxury content ensures there is little commonality with the Escape. It’s quieter inside, thanks in part to Active Noise Control, which uses hidden microphones and a control module to create opposing sound waves to cancel out noises. The system can be combined with continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric steering, variable transmission shift mapping plus traction and stability control to form Lincoln Drive Control. Overview: Compact sedans appeal to a buyer’s practical nature. However, with the WRX and the more potent WRX STI, the appeal includes lively power plants, four-seasons driving competency plus sporty suspension and steering components that manage the snakiest of paved and unpaved roadways.

Both 2015 WRX models shed their optional hatchback body styles.

A new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the WRX produces 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the STI continues with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The standard all-wheel-drive system has a 50:50 torque split in the manual-transmission cars and a 45:55 front:rear split with the CVT. But when the going gets tough, up to 100 percent of the power can be directed to either axle. For hardcore types, the STI remains a serious near-race machine that’s ideally suited for drivers with sporting intentions. For nonracing types, the tamer (but still potent) WRX would likely make a better choice.

Hot news for 2015: VW’s hatchback lineup offers plenty of utility, performance and enhanced fuel-thriftiness.

Overview: VW’s seventh-generation hatchback is arriving from the automaker’s new factory in Mexico. Size-wise, the 2015 edition has grown by a couple of inches, most of it between the front and rear wheels, while width has increased by about a half-inch.

The front seats are well bolstered, and the soft-touch dashboard and angled control panel have an upscale-ness commonly reserved for more expensive Germany-based brands. The Golf comes with a 5.8-inch touch-screen infotainment system that responds to swiping and pinch zooming.

The base version uses a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that generates 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque.

Hot news for 2015: Toyota spices up its top-selling midsize sedan and sets it on a new path.

Overview: For years the Toyota Camry has been one of the principal pack leaders in the midsize sedan segment. However, being on top doesn’t automatically guarantee success.

To appeal to new and existing buyers, Toyota has sharpened the Camry’s claws in one of the brand’s more dramatic adjustments.

The most obvious change is the dramatically different front end where a new spindle-style grille/air intake has been installed. There are new gauges, a reshaped control panel and recovered seats with better-quality fabrics. A neat feature is an available wireless charging system located in a bin in front of the shifter that will energize your smartphone or similar electronic device without having to plug in.

The Camry Hybrid drivetrain consists of a 156-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a 105-kilowatt electric motor for a net system output of 200 horsepower and 199 pound-feet. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). Camry drivers are treated to a retuned suspension (sport-tuned for the SE version). The electric-power-steering rack has also been tweaked for greater straight-line stability and a more direct feel while turning.

The base Camry LE has most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE really makes a difference with added sport and luxury content. They include a power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package that’s combined with a navigation system.

The sheet metal is as fresh as you can get, as is the XC’s modular platform that’s scalable for use in other Volvo models.
