Club’s latest tweak is ‘timeless’ clubhouse

Jim Furyk, a PGA Tour pro since 1994, has 16 career victories, including the 2003 U.S. Open. He’s earned the luxury of being able to choose which events he plays in each season.

He breaks down every season as such: The four majors, the four World Golf Championships and three to five other tournaments that he considers must stops. For many reasons, the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance is one of those must-play events on tour for the West Chester, Pa., native.

“It’s always been a special place for me,” Furyk said. “I met (my wife) Tabitha here in Columbus. She went to Ohio State and, for the longest time, her family used to live here.

We’d spend time with them and her friends during the week and it was always fun.”

The Memorial Tournament is always first class when it comes to player accommodations, too. Since its inaugural year in 1976, tournament founder, host and course designer Jack Nicklaus always has treated the players who compete in the event like royalty.

“This is one of the best events on tour and (Nicklaus) is still working to make it bigger and better,” said Furyk, who has six top-10 finishes and one

Nine months ago, Nicklaus green-lighted the latest project at Muirfield Village Golf Club: a new clubhouse behind the 18th green.

“You have a world class golf course but a 1970s California ranch-style clubhouse,” Nicklaus said. “We need to have the

clubhouse match everything else we’re doing. You got to grow on what you have.”

Nicklaus’ goal was to make the new clubhouse appear “timeless.” He didn’t want the style of the most visible and iconic structure on the course to appear dated.

“We changed some of the roof lines and put some chimneys, dormers and opened up skylights,” Nicklaus said.

“Inside, nobody used our dining room. We created a more modern dining room. It became a bar-and-grill with some out-

side dining.”

The end goal was to service the Muirfield Village members but also be beneficial to the tournament. Heavy traffic patterns around the 18th green have caused massive patron logjams. It proved difficult for players who wanted to get from the clubhouse to the driving range or from the driving range to the practice putting green.

“I’d like to get the players to where they can walk freely from the clubhouse to the putting green and back and forth without having to be stopped for a half hour every time they move,” Nicklaus said.

The new clubhouse is just the latest change to Muirfield Village. Within the past decade, the changes have included the lengthening of different holes, completely redesigning the 16th and 17th holes and building a new, state-of-the-art practice

facility.

“Jack was never happy to stay the best,” Furyk said. “He’s always tinkering and trying to make his game better and now he’s done that with this golf course. He’s now looked at the hospitality perspective and he’s changing the clubhouse to make it better and more functional. He’s never satisfied with this being one of the best events on the PGA Tour. That is what is special about Jack and this event.”

Furyk is not alone in this assessment, as the Memorial’s field once again is one of the best on the PGA Tour.

Leading the charge from the United States is Tiger Woods.

The world’s No. 1 player and a 14-time major champion, he won his record fifth Memorial title last year.

The international contingent also is strong, with Adam Scott,

Angel Cabrera and the world’s former No. 1 player, Rory McIlroy, leading the way.

Last month, Scott and Cabrera competed in a two-hole playoff in The Masters Tournament, with Scott winning with a birdie on the second playoff hole to become the first Australian to win at Augusta National.

Four months after this year’s Memorial, the best players in the U.S. and around the world will return to Muirfield Village to compete in The Presidents Cup. “We look forward to having these two fine gentlemen in the field,” Nicklaus said, referring to Scott and Cabrera. “And who knows, perhaps we will see them again later this year as teammates in The Presidents Cup.” ddelco@thisweeknews.com

Your Guide to Muirfield Village

Prep standouts offer insight to course

For the first time since ThisWeek began its annual look at Muirfield Village Golf Club through the eyes of area high school players, female perspectives have been included.

This year, Maite Erana and Lexie Toth of Dublin Jerome and Kamerine Taylor of Dublin Coffman joined the six-player panel that also included boys players Jeg Coughlin III of Village Academy in Powell, Mert Selamet of Jerome and Josh Wick of Upper Arlington.

While all six panelists have played the course, the families of Toth and Coughlin are Muirfield Village members.

Last fall, Toth, a junior, led Jerome at 9-over-par 149 at Ohio State’s Gray Course, as the Celtics won their second consecutive Division I state title.

Toth’s father joined Muirfield Village when she was 3 years old.

“Being a member here just made me want to become a better player,” Toth said.

She did just that. In fifth grade, Toth got serious. She quit travel soccer and has since been going to the club almost daily to work on her game.

It is there Toth typically crosses paths with Coughlin, a sophomore at Village Academy. Both players have taken advantage of the perks that come with being a member at Muirfield Village.

“I can’t tell you how lucky I am,” Coughlin said. “(PGA Tour professional) Jason Day is a member here at Muirfield and I’ve played with him many times. He’s so down to earth.”

Day is from Australia, but lives in Westerville with his wife, Ellie, who is from Lucas, Ohio. Last year, Day held a couple of clinics at Muirfield Village for junior players.

Toth took advantage of the opportunity.

“He’d talk to us about how he became good and how to work hard on your game,” Toth said. “He tells us about his experiences on tour and it is really beneficial to hear what he has to say.”

Toth and Coughlin may have the most experience among our panelists, but there is no shortage of local knowledge. Erana and Taylor have played the course a handful of times as guests of Toth. And until last fall, Upper Arlington traditionally played host to an annual 10-team invitational for area boys teams, allowing Selamet and Wick to play the course.

Selamet, a senior, has since helped Jerome win two consecutive Division I state titles.

“I go to the Memorial every year and I watch it on TV,” he said. “It’s always cool to be able to play the same course the pros play. I always enjoy comparing my scores each year and sometimes I wouldn’t have finished last.”

There will not be an invitational this fall, as Muirfield Village will play host to the Presidents Cup from Oct. 1-6.

Despite the invitational’s twoyear hiatus, the memories the panelists have of playing one of the country’s best courses are forever entrenched.

“It’s always an honor to play and walk in the same footsteps as the games’ greats,” Selamet said. ddelco@thisweeknews.com

Tiger’s roar returns to Muirfield Village

Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major championship in five years, but that doesn’t mean the world’s most famous golfer isn’t winning tournaments.

Professional golfers are defined by the number of major championships on their resume. None more so than Woods, who, at 37 years old, is still four major championship victories shy of tying Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record.

If Woods is to catch Nicklaus anytime soon, his recent history isn’t promising, as winning a 15th major is proving to be a difficult task. Woods’ last major title came at the 2008 U.S. Open.

On the PGA Tour, Woods has won 13 times since that last major, including twice at Muirfield Village. He also has been in contention at majors.

Last year, Woods was the 36-hole leader at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. Both times poor weekend rounds landed Woods outside the top 10.

Last month, Woods finished fourth at the Masters, a tournament he won in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005. It was not without controversy.

During his second round April 12, Woods’ third shot into the par-5 15th hit the pin and ricocheted back into the water. He went from having a short putt for birdie to one-putting for bogey.

After the round, Woods told reporters he dropped “two yards further back.”

The tee on the slight dogleg right is elevated, and it was moved back in 2006 to add about 20 yards and bring the fairway bunkers on the right back into play.

The fairway slopes from right to left and a hooked drive may find a creek that winds through the woods on the left side of the hole. Muirfield Village’s largest green is inviting, but it is guarded by four traps right, left and rear.

Kamerine Taylor, Dublin Coffman: I’m aiming on the left side of the fairway bunkers, which is the right side of the fairway. I’m thinking just turn the ball over Kamerine Taylor and that should leave me a mid-iron to the Dublin Coffman green. I don’t think it’s one of the worst approaches on the course because there isn’t a bunker right in front of the green. If you’re on target, but short, you’re not in a bunker. I don’t think it’s too challenging of a first hole.

A creek that flanks the entire right side of the hole from 100 yards out and abuts the right edge and rear of the green comes into play off the tee, especially under dry conditions.

The fairway has a gentle slope that funnels the ball toward the creek. A drive too far left could leave an approach shot impeded by trees.

Accuracy to one of the flattest putting surfaces on the course is at a premium because bunkers sit front right and rear left and the creek runs Josh Wick along the right side and behind the Upper Arlington green.

Josh Wick, Upper Arlington: I personally like this hole a lot. Off the tee, you play a draw off the right side of the fairway back to the middle. If you hit it far enough, you get a little run off that hill and you’ll have a low iron or wedge in your hand. Even though there is water around green, unless the pin is back right, it doesn’t come into play. This is a hole that is pretty gettable. If you hit a good drive, you can make birdies here.

‘Miracle shot’

Tiger Woods’ fist pump behind the No. 16 green during the final round of last year’s Memorial Tournament wasn’t the first time the golfer’s iconic reaction was on display at Muirfield Village.

Woods has hit his fair share of amazing shots at the Memorial, but he is not alone. The following list chronicles the top shots in the tournament’s 37-year history, and it just may be one list where Woods isn’t ranked No. 1. So what prevented one of his shots from getting top billing? It is a shot that will be hard to supplant for what happened during – and after.

1993 – Trailing leader Payne Stewart by one shot entering the 72nd hole, Paul Azinger and Stewart both found the left-front greenside bunker on their approach shots at No. 18. Stewart was away and placed his bunker shot 8 feet from the hole. Azinger’s

explosion also cleared the bunker’s 6-foot-high lip, but this time the ball rolled into the hole. Azinger dropped to his knees and placed his hands on his head in disbelief. Once the cheers subsided, Stewart missed an 8-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

“It was just a miracle shot,” Azinger said.

According to reports, while Azinger held the post-tournament press conference, his good friend Stewart went into the locker room and mashed bananas into Azinger’s street shoes.

2012 – At the recently redesigned No. 16, Woods trailed by two strokes in the final round when he hit his tee shot behind the green, 50 feet from the hole. Woods opted to hit a flop shot out of the thick rough. With a water haz-

ard on the other side, Woods slid his wedge underneath the ball and it landed softly on the green and trickled in the hole.

Woods finished with a finalround 67 and a two-stroke victory over Andres Romero and Rory Sabbatini.

Par 4, 401 yards Overall rank: Fifth easiest (Sixth easiest in 2012) Overall average score: 4.069 (4.045 in 2012) One of the more picturesque holes on the course that is tougher than it looks. It features a downhill drive to a generous fairway. A drive too far left and trees and a creek come into play. A drive too far right brings bunkers into play. The approach is over a lake to a small, narrow, two-tiered green cut into a hillside that features bunkers front right and behind. Although the second shot is with a short-iron or wedge, wind and water await a weak approach.

Kamerine Taylor, Dublin Coffman: I lay up off the tee with a wood or hybrid down and aim for the right side of the fairway and try to turn it over to hit that gap in the fairway.

Left is dead. You don’t want to get too close to those trees on the left. If I hit Kamerine Taylor that gap off the tee, it will set myself Dublin Coffman up with a short club or wedge into the green. You have the water in front so you’re dead there and if you go long you got bunkers. Also, it’s narrow from back to front. You have to be precise with your distance on that second shot.

The first of four par 3s is a popular viewing hole with a natural amphitheater effect along the right side and behind the hole. The long, narrow and heavily bunkered green is cut into a hillside, meaning golfers face a 40-foot wooden depression on the left side of the green.

Jack Nicklaus once said of the right-side dropoff, “It’s a place you can get out of, but you might be there for a while.”

Mert Selamet, Dublin Jerome: You definitely do not want to go left. There are bunkers right so you can’t miss right.

You have to aim at the right edge of the green with a 4- or 5-iron. It’s a long shot. Honoree Floyd overcame Memorial blues

Raymond Floyd became so discouraged with his scores at Muirfield Village Golf Club during the early years of the Memorial that he admitted he planned his schedule to avoid playing in Jack Nicklaus’ tournament.

In 1982, Floyd finally overcame his central Ohio struggles and won the Memorial at 7-under-par 281, two strokes ahead of Wayne Levi, Peter Jacobsen, Gil Morgan and Roger Maltbie.

“Jack and I have been buddies for a long time,” Floyd said in the post-tournament press conference, where he treated the room to a case of 1973 Dom Perignon champagne at $110 a bottle. “I said, ‘I just can’t play your golf course.’”

Thirty-one years later, Floyd will return to Muirfield Village as the 2013 Memorial Tournament honoree.

His win at the Memorial was one of 22 PGA Tour victories that included four major championships – the 1969 and 1982 PGA Championship, the 1976 Masters and the 1986 U.S. Open.

•LEGENDARY LUNCHEON – Last December, the PGA Tour awarded the Memorial Tournament’s annual Legends Luncheon the “Best Special Event” at the tour’s tour-

nament meetings.

Four months later, the third annual Legends Luncheon was held at Ohio State’s student union. There it was announced the event raised a record $550,000 for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and Nationwide Children’s Hospital alliance. This year’s total equals what the event raised in its first two years. In

all, $1.1 million has been raised to increase awareness and advance the care given at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“It’s been special to see the community embrace this,” Nationwide CEO Steve Rasmussen said. “This year we made the next really big step and this event helps the Memorial spirit get kicked off. It’s

great for us and the community.”

Contributing charitable dollars to Nationwide Children’s Hospital was an easy decision for Jack and Barbara Nicklaus.

In 1965, the hospital found an ingested crayon lodged in 11month-old Nancy Nicklaus’ windpipe.

“They saved her life at that hospital,” Jack Nicklaus said.

“We can never repay that debt that’s for sure.”

The Legends Luncheon is one way for the Nicklaus family to help repay that debt and help the Memorial Tournament do its part in raising money for

charity.

“For so many years we’ve concentrated on the golf course and the charity aspect has been there, but it hasn’t been the No. 1 focus,” Jack Nicklaus said.

“You look at what other golf tournaments are doing and you see them raising $5, $10, $15 million a year for charity. We’re sitting back in the pack.

“This is the first of that initiative and moving forward we want to raise more and do more things for good causes, especially for Nationwide Children’s Hospital.”

One of the more unusual holes at Muirfield Village, the first of four par 5s features a creek that bisects the hole about 300 yards from the green. Near the green, the creek widens dramatically and becomes a moat around the entire left side of the green. A downhill tee shot to a wide, level fairway makes the hole reachable in two for most pros. Although eagles are rare, birdies are not, making this one of the easiest in tournament play.

Jeg Coughlin III, Village Academy: This is one of the more special holes in America.

I’ll take a driver or 3-wood off the tee with a slight cut because you want to get it past the two trees on the right. Then, with the Muirfield creek running through the hole it challenges Jeg Coughlin III the player that can go for it in two and it challenges the player that lays up. Most of the time Village Academy: when you play a par-5 you take a risk when you go for it, but if you lay up it’s typically an easier shot. When you have to think about your layup shot like you do here, you know you have a good par-5.

A cluster of bunkers dug into a hillside along the left side of the fairway and a strategically placed fairway bunker on the right puts a premium on an accurate tee shot. Ideally, the tee ball lands in the left center of the fairway leaving a clearer approach that needs to carry water and a bunker fronting the green.

Lexie Toth, Dublin Jerome: I live on this hole, so I’m always practicing my chipping and putting there. A lot of people have said to me they think this is one of the hardest holes on the front nine and I thought that was shocking. Off the tee it is Lexie Toth forgiving and wide open. If you have good Dublin Jerome iron play you can hit it onto the green. You have to make sure if you do miss the green you leave yourself an easy up and down. It’s a big green that slopes severely from right to left so you have to be careful.

Rule changes, revamped schedule highlight year

Off the course, changes to the length of the season schedule and potential changes to the length of players’ putters have dominated discussion on the PGA Tour in 2013.

On the course, the season’s first 14 events were dominated byAmerican-born players. Leading the charge was 37-year-old Tiger Woods, who already has finished atop the leaderboard at the Farmers Insurance Open, the WGC-Cadillac Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

On May 9, he won The Players Championship.

The Americans’ winningstreak ended a week before the Masters and carried into the season’s first major, which was won

by Australian Adam Scott.

Scott became the fourth player in the last six major championships to win using a belly putter, causing the debate to reignite. It is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

players should be prohibited from using the long putter. If passed, the rule would go into effect in 2016.

“Throughout the 600-year history of golf, the essence of playing the game has been to

grip the club with the hands and swing it freely at the ball,” USGA executive director Mike Davis said. “The player’s challenge is to control the movement of the entire club in striking the ball, and anchoring the club alters the nature of that challenge. Our conclusion is that the rules of golf should be amended to preserve the traditional character of the golf swing by eliminating the growing practice of anchoring the club.”

The USGA and R&A are considered the governing bodies of golf, and among their key core functions are to write and interpret the rules of golf. This latest proposal did not sit well with the PGA Tour.

Three months after the joint announcement, PGATour commissioner Tim Finchem responded at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz.

“Essentially, where the PGA Tour came down was that they did not think that banning anchoring was in the best interest of golf or the PGA Tour,” Finchem said.

Currently, the USGA and R&A are listening to further comments and suggestions from the golf community.

It is heavily bunkered with a double-dogleg, but wide open and one of the easiest each year in the Memorial. It isn’t easy to birdie but big numbers are rare here. Conservative players who lay up farther left take the front right bunker that rests in a grassy swale out of play. Bunkers front left, front right and rear guard the putting surface. The green slopes severely off the left toward a wooded ravine.

Maite Erana, Dublin Jerome: This is a very long, uphill hole that could be easily underestimated when you first stand at the tee box. The bunkers on the left side of the fairway are reachable if your drive is not well positioned. If you come from a right-centered tee shot it is important to stay close to the Maite Erana edge of the fairway on the second shot, Dublin Jerome maybe even left-center. Going dead straight complicates a good approach shot to the green. The green has two slightly different levels so you have to pay attention to the pin position to give yourself a comfortable putt where you don’t have to deal with tight breaks or downhill putts.

Eight Australians have finished as runner-up at Augusta National including Greg Norman, who finished second three times. Norman’s most memorable finish came in 1996 after he blew a six-shot lead in the final round to Nick Faldo.

“This was one thing in golf we hadn’t been able to achieve. It’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first Aussie to win.”

On May 2, Scott committed to play in the Memorial.

“The wayAdam finished the Masters, coming down the stretch, was terrific,” Jack Nicklaus said. “He had a focus and body language that said, ‘I am going to get it done this time.’

Every shot he hit was fantastic and he finished impressively.”

•REVAMPED SCHEDULE – Since 2007, the PGA Tour’s Fall Series began after the Tour Championship in late September and covered the end of the calendar year. Traditionally, the Fall Series had smaller

purses, weaker fields and no FedEx Cup points were awarded.

In 2013, the first round of the Frys.com Open on Oct. 10 will signal the beginning of the 2014 PGA Tour schedule.

Before the new season can begin, PGA Tour cards need to be issued.

In March 2012, Finchem announced the PGA Tour was doing away with the Q-School as the primary way golfers earn their tour card. Now, cards will be earned during a four-tournament series on the Web.com Tour. Instead of Q-School, the top 75 players from the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour players who finish from Nos. 126-200 on the money list

Dogwoods, beech and hickory trees envelop the second shortest of the par-3 holes and one of the more popular viewing holes. The downhill tee shot carries over a valley, which makes club selection tricky. The plateau green is almost entirely surrounded by sand, including a deep pot bunker that sits back left. The valley between tee and green adds to the difficultly of club selection, as the hole looks longer than it is.

Lexie Toth, Dublin Coffman: It is one of my favorite par 3s on the course, beside No. 12. Those bunkers are really deep and I know, at least at one point, were among the deepest on the PGA Tour. The green is so narrow, but long. I Lexie Toth usually play a little draw, but when I Dublin Coffman draw it too much it goes into the bunker on the left. There is trouble on either side if you’re in one of those bunkers because you’re facing that narrow green with another bunker on the other side.

Dramatic shot leads Woods to fifth title Since 1976, the Memorial Tournament has been one of the premier sporting events in central Ohio’s yearly calendar and one of the more popular events on the PGATour for pros and fans alike. Here is a summary of previous Memorial tournaments.

2012

Champion: Tiger Woods, 279 (-9) Honoree: Tom Watson Recap: For the fifth time since 1999, Woods walked off the No. 18 green at Muirfield Village Golf Club as champion of the Memorial Tournament.

Woods began the final round four shots behind leader Spencer Levin but birdied three of the last four holes to card a final round 5-under-par 67. He finished at 9-under-par 279, twoshots ahead of Andres Romero and Rory Sabbatini.

Woods’ charge on the back nine in the final round was highlighted by the shot of the tournament. On the redesigned par3 16th, Woods holed a 50-foot flop shot from behind the green for birdie.

“If he’s short, the tournament is over,” Memorial founder and course designer Jack Nicklaus said. “If he’s long, the tournament is over. He puts it in the hole. What a shot. I don’t think under the circumstances I’ve seen a better shot.”

The victory marked Woods’ 73rd on the PGA Tour, tying Nicklaus for second all-time behind Sam Snead's 82 wins.

Woods is the fastest in PGA Tour history to get 73 wins at the age of 36 years, 5 months, 4 days.

“It’s awfully special to just have won this event,” Woods said. “To do it here with Jack there at 18, it’s awfully special for us as players to have him there and to greet us after we finish.”

2011

Champion: Steve Stricker, 272 (-16) Honoree: Nancy Lopez Recap: Stricker, who had not finished in the top 10 in his 11 previous trips to Muirfield Village, shot a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish with a 16-under-par 272 to edge Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe by one stroke. Kuchar and Jobe each carded a 65 in the final round.

Stricker’s final round was aided by saving par from the bunkers on Nos. 16 and 17, making putts of 15 and seven feet, respectively. He carded all four rounds below 70, scoring 68, 67 and 69 in the first three rounds.

2010

Champion: Justin Rose, 270 (-18) Honoree: Seve Ballesteros Recap: Rose’s first PGA Tour victory came in the Memorial and the South African-born golfer did it in flawless fashion.

He shot a bogey-free 6-underpar 66 in the final round that included one-putting greens on

“To win here at the Memorial, at Jack’s tournament, I couldn’t think of a better place to win my first tournament,” Rose said.

Rose finished at 18-underpar 270, three shots ahead of PGATour rookie Rickie Fowler.

Rose joined Keith Fergus (1981), Kenny Perry (1991) and Tom Lehman (1994) as players who earned their first PGATour victory by winning the Memorial.

2009

2004

Champion: Ernie Els, 270 (-18) Honorees: Lee Trevino and Joyce Wethered Recap: Els needed only 100 putts in 72 holes en route to becoming only the fourth nonAmerican winner in the 29-year history of the Memorial Tournament.

The South African native, who shot a 66 in each of the final two rounds, broke the fourday tournament record of 101, set by Andrew Magee in 2000.

“I made almost every putt I had to make,” Els said.

Els needed only one putt on 11 of his final 14 holes to finish at 18-under-par 270, four strokes better than runner-up Fred Couples. Els’tournament score was the third-lowest winning total behindTom Lehman’s 268 in 1994 and Tiger Woods’ 269 in 2000.

Justin Rose earned his first PGA Tour victory by winning the Memorial Tournament in 2010.

Perry became the oldest winner of the Memorial Tournament and tied Tigers Woods as the event’s only three-time winner.

Perry trailed Matthew Goggin by three strokes entering the final round before carding a 3under-par 69 to finish at 8under-par 280. Perry finished two strokes ahead of Goggin, Jerry Kelly, Justin Rose and Mike Weir.

“If I’m in contention here on Sunday, I always like my chances,” Perry said.

Perry took the tournament lead for good when Weir’s approach on the par-4 10th came up short. Weir was unable to get up-and-down for par.

Meanwhile, Perry saved par out of a bunker on No. 12 and from behind the green at No. 14. A birdie putt at No. 15 gave him a three-stroke lead with three holes to play.

Champion: Tiger Woods, 276 (-12) Honorees: JoAnne Carner and Jack Burke, Jr. Recap: Woods became the Memorial Tournament’s first four-time winner with birdies on the 71st and 72nd holes.

He took the tournament lead on the par-4 17th after his 9iron got him within nine feet of the pin, and his approach shot on No. 18 was a 7-iron from 183 yards that landed about a foot from the pin. He tapped in to record a final-round 65 and finish at 12-under-par 276, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jim Furyk.

Both players missed the green with their second shots and still were off the green after their third shots. Woods went first and chipped in from 25 feet for par. Singh bogeyed and Woods' two-shot lead would hold for the remainder of the tournament.

Champion: Tom Watson, 274 (-14) Honoree: Billy Casper Recap: At the age of 46, Watson revived not only his career but also himself by winning the Memorial for his first PGATour victory in nine years.

From 1977-80, he won 22 times on the PGA Tour and, all told, has eight major championships. Yet, after ending his victory drought, he savored his finish in the Memorial.

“God, it feels good to win again,” he said. “To be here, the last person off the golf course, the last putt in, winning a golf tournament — I missed it.”

After an opening round 70 and a second round 60, Watson’s third-round 66 put him in position for a run Sunday. In the final round, he birdied Nos. 10 and 13 to take a four-stroke lead with four holes to play.

A late charge by David Duval cut Watson’s lead to one stroke

“It felt like winning all over again for the very first time,” Watson said.

Champion: Greg Norman, 269 (-19) Honorees: Willie Anderson, John Ball, James Braid, Harold Hilton and J.H. Taylor Recap: After taking a selfimposed five-week vacation, Norman arrived at Muirfield Village rested and ready. He finished with a 19-under-par 269 to win his second Memorial title.

Norman finished four strokes ahead of runners-up David Duval, Steve Elkington and Mark Calcavecchia and was one shot shy of tying the Memorial record for the lowest winning score, set the previous year by Tom Lehman.

In the final round, Elkington pulled to within one shot as Norman reached No. 15. Norman would save par on Nos. 15 and 16 with up-and-downs from off the green.

“I said to myself walking to No. 17, ‘Let’s birdie the last two and get this thing over and done with.’

That is exactly what Norman did, as he joined Jack Nicklaus (1977, ’84) and Hale Irwin (1983, ’85) as the Memorial's only two-time winners.

1994

Champion: Tom Lehman, 268 (-20) Honoree: Mickey Wright Recap: Lehman earned his first PGATour victory in record fashion, as he shot four consecutive 67s to finish with a 20under-par 268.

“This is one of the greatest moments of my life,” he said.

A few months earlier, Lehman had finished two

strokes behind champion Jose Maria Olazabal in The Masters.

In the Memorial, Lehman finished five strokes ahead of runner-up Greg Norman, who shot a final-round 64. John Cook, a MuirfieldVillage member and former Ohio State player, finished third at 276.

Lehman overcame more than nerves in the final two rounds.

A case of influenza limited his appetite to two apples and a banana during each of his final two rounds.

1993

Champion: Paul Azinger, 274 (-14) Honoree: Arnold Palmer Recap: Entering the 72nd hole, Azinger trailed playing partner and good friend Payne Stewart by one stroke. On their approach shots at No. 18, both players landed in the large and deep left-front greenside bunker.

Stewart was away and went first and his shot left him with an eight-foot downhill putt to save par. Azinger’s shot cleared the six-foot high lip, landed on the green and rolled 15 feet before falling into the hole for a birdie. Stewart missed his par putt that would have forced a playoff.

“I was just thinking of how high I had to go,” Azinger said.

“I just wanted to be sure and clear that lip to the edge (of the putting surface).”

Video game features course for first time

Dan Kostelnick is a 27-yearold Columbus resident who works as a process improvement leader and has been happily married to his wife, Desirre, for three years.

In his spare time, he loves to golf and play video games.

On Jan. 11, those two worlds were set on a collision course.

That day, Electronic Arts Inc. announced Memorial Tournament founder and host Jack Nicklaus, along with Muirfield Village Golf Club, would be featured in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14. EA Sports, a sub-label of Electronic Arts Inc., is known worldwide for its ability to recreate sports in video games.

Woods partnered with EA Sports in 1998 to help boost its golf franchise, which began in 1990. Since 1998, the company has released annual editions featuring new styles of game play and new courses to entice gamers.

This is the first year Nicklaus and Muirfield Village have been included.

One of Muirfield’s most challenging tee shots because veering right means the approach might be blocked by trees and going left brings even more trouble with an elevated, wooded hillside. Even the best drives can result in a downhill lie.

The approach shot may have an angled lie into a tilted green that is framed by trees, a lake, a creek, a bunker in front and a dramatic hillside behind the green.

Mert Selamet, Dublin Jerome: You have to aim toward the left side of the fairway that goes downhill and slopes right to left. The green on the second shot looks like you’re hitting to a tee box. It is hard to calculate the distance because of how much downhill the green is from the Mert Selamet fairway. You have to take a little less club, Dublin Jerome but then that brings the front creek into play. If you go over the green you have a bunker and a delicate chip to a green that breaks toward that water. I try to hit the middle of the green because if you’re on the back side it is a quick putt down the hill.

“Pretty much around April we evaluate our courses and

Wilson and his co-workers came up with the idea that Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 would focus on the importance of golf history and feature the game’s greatest legends.

Developers set out to present to gamers the ability to compete against some of golf’s greatest players in Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Sam Snead.

“Once we got Jack, we thought it would be cool to have his course, as well,” Wilson said. “By the time we got around to adding Jack, we didn’t have much trouble getting the course on board. They were excited about the course appearing in the game and it was a great way for people out there who don’t have a chance to play Muirfield Village to experience the course.”

There are two primary reasons why Muirfield Village jumped at the opportunity to be included in the latest edition of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise. First, officials at members-only golf clubs

This is increasingly one of the more difficult holes on the course and one of the two longest par-4s at Muirfield. Off the tee, this is the closest as you’ll get to an uphill drive with sand guarding both sides of the driving zone. A large, deep bunker fronting the green threatens approaches that are not struck accurately. This hole demands length and precision.

Jeg Coughlin III, Village Academy: This is one of the toughest holes you’ll ever play. This hole almost always plays into the wind, uphill and with it being 470 yards from the tee, you almost have Jeg Coughlin III to play this in your mind as a par-5. The Village Academy entire green is surrounded by bunkers.

You don’t want to go in the front one. It is deep and quite tough to see the top of the flag stick if you’re sitting down in there.

This is one way to appease current fans and create new ones.

The other reason is that the technology used to reproduce courses in a video game is simply outstanding.

Laser Scanning

Shannon Yates is an environmental artist for EA Sports and developed the technology known as “laser scanning.”

“It’s basically survey equipment,” said Jeff Martion, senior environmental modeler for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14.

“It’s a hybrid of technologies that already exists,” Wilson added. “But it is pretty modern.”

Yates and Ryan Faraji are the two at EA Sports dedicated to traveling around the country scanning courses. They arrived at Muirfield Village last year to begin the tedious process.

Scanning takes about six to 10 days to complete, depending on weather, and covers the hole’s layout and elevation changes. The process breaks down when it comes to objects like trees, benches and buildings, so Yates and Faraji and also take photos for future reference.

Orlando, Fla., Martion and his team need about another two months to add in the correct textures like trees, bridges, buildings and to add the correct lighting.

“Scanning typically gets within six millimeters of accuracy,” Wilson said. “It doesn’t include the trees and buildings, so that’s where the photos come in and we use them as reference.”

To scan a hole, Yates and Faraji start at the tee box and place the equipment, which is similar to what surveyors use.

They scan a portion of the course, pick up the apparatus and slowly move down the hole.

The final product gamers see is an accurate representation of the course.

EA Sports is committed to providing gamers a realistic reproduction of popular sports.

For its golf franchise, part of that process is recreating the events and courses, but also providing gamers the opportunity to play alongside or as an actual professional golfer.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 features the legends but also includes a handful of current PGA and LPGA players. EA Sports attends events with those players to promote its product.

Two years ago, Rickie Fowler was in his second season on the PGA Tour and preparing for his first appearance at The Masters. It coincided with EA Sports’ release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters, in which Fowler and Augusta National were featured.

“We brought the game to his house,” Coulthart said. “It gives golfers a good sense of the

sight lines, where to hit the ball and what angles to attack on your approach shots, but it doesn’t replace the ability to play a practice round.”

Central Ohio has embraced the Memorial Tournament, which has become one of the premier stops on the PGA Tour.

With the course’s largest lake separating tee and green, this signature hole at Muirfield Village requires the most accurate of tee shots. It is an elevated tee facing a two-tiered, kidney-shaped green cut into another hillside and set diagonally to the line of play. Bunkers are positioned front right and back left requiring a precise tee shot as the only means of survival.

Josh Wick, Upper Arlington: You definitely need to do your due diligence and have the right number. If you go long, there is thick grass on that hill and everything runs away toward the water.

The downhill drive, through a wooded chute, is to a level fairway that gently curves left toward the green. Finding the right side of the fairway avoids the bunker on the left and sets up the best angle into a long and narrow green. An approach shot to a thin green needs to negotiate bunkers that stretch almost the full length of the green on either side.

Right center of the fairway is where I’ve played it most of the time, but that bunker on the left side is a little tricky. You are usually thinking driver but that bunker throws you off. You don’t know if you can make it past it. If you do, Maite Erana the green feels downhill and it opens up a Dublin Jerome lot more than you think it does from the tee shot. Depending on where the pin is, I try to be careful of the left front bunker and most of the time landing your approach on the front center part of the green is a good spot to be in.

The shortest par-4 at Muirfield has long been considered one of the world’s great short par 4s. It is a real test of decision making off the tee. About 245 yards from the tee, a creek emerges from the left woods to border the fairway some 40 yards before angling across the hole and then toward the right side of the green. A long and narrow green is heavily guarded on the left by several bunkers.

Josh Wick, Upper Arlington: The tee shot entices you. There is bail out to the left, but I don’t think going for it is really needed. This is one of the holes you can have either 60 yards or 120 yards because of the pin. You have to Josh Wick play a left to right bounce because the Upper Arlington green slopes severely toward the water.

Even though you have a wedge in your hand on the approach it is not an easy shot because that green is very narrow.

Strange had finished 31st, 39th and 35th, respectively, in his previous three Memorial appearances and, 10 days prior to the start of the tournament, he had yet to commit to participating.

But in the fall of 1987, Strange played in the Ryder Cup at Muirfield Village and found that the course now suited his game. He played under similar conditions less than a year later in the Memorial.

“It was identical to the Ryder Cup conditions,” Strange said.

“Playing in the Ryder Cup helped tremendously to learn and get used to the (fast and firm) course.”

Strange finished two strokes better than runners-up Hale Irwin and David Frost.

1987

Champion: Don Pooley, 272 (-16) Honorees: Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris Recap: Pooley finished second in 1986 and looked as if he was destined for the same fate a year later.

Through 54 holes, Scott Hoch posted a tournament-record 18under-par 198 and led Pooley by four strokes. In the final round, however, Hoch, who had played his previous 55 holes without a bogey, proceeded to bogey Nos. 2, 3 and 4 and stumbled to a final-round 78.

Pooley, meanwhile, posted a

70 to finish first at 16-underpar 272, three strokes ahead of Curt Byrum. Hoch finished eighth.

“I was surprised when I made (the deficit) up so quickly,” said Pooley, whose only other PGA Tour victory had come seven years earlier in B.C. Open. “I believe the deep satisfaction I feel from winning the Memorial Tournament will last a long time.”

He opened with consecutive 68s and held a four-stroke lead after 36 holes, but Bobby Watkins surged to the lead after a third-round 67.

After 12 holes in the final round, Irwin regained his fourshot lead and finished with a 72 to Watkins’74 to win by one stroke.

“When I had the four-shot lead, I felt if I can just hang on, which I barely did,” Irwin said.

“It wasn’t too pretty or too effective on the last few holes, but it worked.”

Irwin had won the 1983 Memorial with an identical score, 7-under-par 281.

Nicklaus had earned his repeat victory in the Memorial in 1984 after winning his first in 1977.

Champion: Hal Sutton, 271 (-17) Honoree: Roberto De Vicenzo Recap: Pre-tournament rains and four days of little or no wind provided optimal scoring opportunities, and Sutton took advantage.

Sutton finished his four-day onslaught with one eagle and 23 birdies and posted all four rounds under 70 to finish with a tournament-record 17-underpar 271, four strokes ahead of runner-up Don Pooley.

“I don’t think that record (Sutton’s 271) will be broken for a long time,” Nicklaus said. “I just don’t think you’re going to have four days (of scoring conditions) like that again for a long time.”

Jack Nicklaus became the Memorial’s first two-time winner.

He earned the victory in a playoff, the tournament’s first since the inaugural year.

Nicklaus and Andy Bean were tied at 8-under-par 280 after 72 holes. In the playoff, both players birdied the par-5 15th and made par on the par3 16th. But on No. 17, Bean missed a three-foot putt to halve the hole.

The win was Nicklaus' first in two years and the 70th of his career.

“I dearly love (the Memorial),” Nicklaus said. “I am proud to win again.”

Bean shot a 67 in both the third and fourth rounds, marking the best finishing rounds in Memorial history.

“I made a couple of mistakes and it cost me,” Bean said.

1983

Champion: Hale Irwin, 281 (-7) Honoree: Tommy Armour Recap: Consistency proved to be Irwin’s best tactic, as he avenged his playoff loss to Roger Maltbie in the first Memorial in 1976.

Graham and Ben Crenshaw, who tied for second.

“Even since the (1976) loss, I’ve wanted to win this tournament,” Irwin said.

Irwin was the first player to play all four rounds at MuirfieldVillage under par and came within one shot of Graham’s tournament-record 280. Irwin entered the final round at 4under-par, four shots back of leader Graham and in a six-way tie for sixth.

Graham and Crenshaw missed birdie putts from 25 feet on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff.

Historically the easiest hole on the course, it also is cut arrow-straight through the heart of a forest. The tee shot features one of the tightest landing areas with about 20 yards across at its narrowest point, as dense woods line both sides of the fairway.

If you can reach the crest of that hill off the tee, you have a chance to go for it in two. But be careful. At the green, there is a steep slope in front with a couple of deep bunkers on each side of the green.

Mert Selamet, Dublin Jerome: It is a lot tighter of a tee shot than it looks when you see it on TV. The pros will hit driver and a hybrid or 4-iron to the green, no problem. That second shot for Mert Selamet most is always awkward because it is an Dublin Jerome uphill fairway, you’re hitting into that hill and you usually have to club up because of a creek that runs through the fairway. It’s just funny how easy the pros make it. For them, this is a good birdie hole. For me, I’m just trying to make par.

Redesigned in 2010, this hole is now one of the most difficult. At last year’s Memorial, No. 16 was ranked the toughest, but provided the biggest highlight as Tiger Woods holed out a flop shot from 50 feet en route to his fifth victory at Muirfield Village. A pond guards the length of the green on the left and the putting surface is turned more horizontally to the teeing ground. The hole is friendly to a right-toleft ball flight. Bunkers rest behind the right side of the green and they welcome balls that are bailed out long right because of the daunting water hazard short left.

Kamerine Taylor, Dublin Coffman: “The first time I played this hole was after it was renovated. The green was really hard Kamerine Taylor but I still managed to birdie it. What makes Dublin Coffman this hole tricky is the length and the fact you have to carry that water. With the length of the hole you have to hit a long iron or hybrid into a green that is firm, which really goes against the need to stick it close to the pin here.”

â€˘â€˜THE CHAIRMAN’ – Robert S. Hoag, who was one of the four founders of Muirfield Village and an original co-chairman of the Memorial Tournament, died March 1.

Hoag was referred to as “The Chairman� by the club’s staff.

In 1982, he was selected as the club’s captain. “I've known Bob Hoag since I was 13 years old,� Nicklaus said. “He has been one of the best friends a guy could ever have. We played golf together, fished together and traveled the world together. We created

four strokes behind 54-hole leader Spencer Levin. Woods shot a 5-under 67 to finish the tournament at 9-under 279, two strokes ahead of Andrews Romero and Rory Sabbatini.

Woods orchestrated the shot of the tournament at the par-3 16th, as he hit a 50-foot flop shot that rolled into the cup for a birdie.

Nicklaus called the shot, “the most unbelievable, gusty shot I’ve ever seen.�

Woods has amassed an impressive catalogue of highlight-reel worthy shots during his 13 appearances at the Memorial. His success at Nicklaus’ tournament is based not only on Woods’physical skills, but also his positive mental atti-

tude when he arrives in central Ohio. “I just feel comfortable on this golf course,� Woods said. “Over the course of my career, I've played Jack's designed golf courses well, and I think that we kind of see the game similarly, how we hit the golf ball, the trajectory we hit it on, the way we think around the golf course. I’ve done really well on his golf courses, even going back to my amateur days. “When I come here, it's just one of those feelings where I just feel comfortable. Even though I may be struggling or not, I just have a good feeling of how to play the golf course.�

Redesigned for the 2003 tournament, it has since ranked in the top five most difficult holes during the Memorial. Midway up the fairway, bunkers are placed on either side about 20 yards apart. Play it short of those bunkers and you have a long iron approach. The slightly elevated green is guarded by severe slope in front that runs down to a creek while bunkers are positioned on the right and back left.

Jeg Coughlin III, Village Academy: “Not only is this a beast of a hole without wind, but it typically plays into the wind. It all starts with the tee shot. You got thick PGA Tour rough on each side of the fairway and bunkers on every side that are 5- to 6-feet deep. If you are in the middle of the Jeg Coughlin III fairway it is still a visually demanding hole.

Village Academy The approach shot almost plays uphill to a green that slopes severely from the middle down to the front. If there is a front left pin, you can get away with a great shot, but take enough club or you’ll come up short and roll down to the creek.�

1982

Champion: Raymond Floyd, 281 (-7) Honoree: Glenna CollettVare Recap: For years Floyd joked with his good friend Jack Nicklaus.

“I just can’t play your course,” Floyd said he would tell Nicklaus.

With scores of 67 and 71 in the final two rounds, Floyd was able to conquer a personal frustration. He finished first at 7under-par 281, two strokes ahead of Wayne Levi, Peter Jacobsen, Gil Morgan and Roger Maltbie, who tied for second at 283.

Floyd made up eight shots on the leaders during the third round, including Maltbie, who was seeking his second Memorial victory. Maltbie shot a 68 on the first day and a 66 on the second to set a 36-hole record of 10-under 134. He faltered in the final two rounds, however, shooting a 75 and 74.

1981

Champion: Keith Fergus, 284 (-4) Honoree: Harry Vardon Recap: After four and a half years on the PGA Tour, Fergus finally won his first tournament.

“I’ve been working very hard,” he said. “I often wondered if it was worth it. Believe me, it was worth it.”

In the final round, Fergus took

the lead over Jack Renner with a birdie at No. 12. He maintained a one-stroke lead entering the 72nd hole.

On No. 18, Fergus’ drive landed in a fairway bunker on the right side of the green. Renner hit his drive into the same bunker. Renner was away and had a better lie, and he hit his 4-iron onto the green, 35 feet from the hole. Fergus shot a 6iron 155 yards onto the green, 30 feet from the hole.After Renner missed his birdie putt, Fergus two-putted for the victory.

Fergus, who was one shot back entering the final round, posted a 71 to finish at 4-underpar 284.

1980

Champion: David Graham, 280 (-8) Honoree: Byron Nelson Recap: Graham carded a 70 in the final round to finish at 8under-par 280, one stroke ahead of runner-up Tom Watson.

Graham, an original Muirfield Village member, broke Jack Nicklaus’ tournamentrecord 281 with an 8-under-par 280.

“It’s gratifying to know you have the kind of game to win on a course like this,” Graham said.

Graham and Watson entered No. 18 tied for the lead.

Approach shots left both players above the pin and almost on the same line. Graham, 30 feet away, putted first and found the bottom of the cup. Watson, 25

feet away, missed his putt that would have forced a playoff.

“I made a couple of putts coming in,” Graham said. “The one for eagle at No. 15 and the one for birdie at No. 18. That was the difference.”

1979

Champion: Tom Watson, 285 (-3) Honoree: Gene Sarazen Recap: Watson carded a second-round 69 in conditions that saw 30 mph wind gusts and wind chills that dropped temperatures to 13 degrees.

“It was one of the top three rounds I’ve ever played,” said Watson, who shot 72 and 71 in the final two rounds to finish first at 3-under-par 285, three strokes better than runner-up Miller Barber.

During the second round, Watson birdied Nos. 5, 8 and 18, missed only two greens and had no bogeys. He was the only player to break 70 in the second round.

1978

Champion: Jim Simons, 284 (-4) Honoree: Francis Ouimet Recap: Simons had seven par saves, five of which occurred in the final seven holes, to win at 4-under-par 284, one stroke ahead of runner-up Bill Kratzert.

Simons, Kratzert (285) and Fuzzy Zoeller (287) were the only players to finish under par for the tournament.

On the 72nd hole, Simons sank a 21-foot putt for birdie and Kratzert missed a 10-footer that would have forced a playoff.

“I made some clutch putts,” Simons said.

1977

Champion: Jack Nicklaus, 281 (-7) Honoree: Walter Hagen Recap: Being the tournament founder and course designer, Nicklaus debated whether to play in the Memorial. If he won, he was concerned that his competitors would think he had unfair advantage.

However, he was convinced by associates and friends to play in the inaugural event and tied for eighth.

“I’m kinda happy I didn’t win the first one,” Nicklaus said.

A year later, Nicklaus added Memorial champion to his moniker of tournament host and course designer. “(This win) was my biggest thrill in golf,” he said.

Nicklaus was a stroke behind leader Bobby Wadkins through three rounds, but Wadkins stumbled to an 81 in the final round and Nicklaus shot a 71 to finish at 7-under-par 281, two strokes ahead of runner-up Hubert Green.

Recap: The first Memorial title came down to a three-hole aggregate-score playoff between 1974 U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin and Maltbie, who was the 1975 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

After 72 holes, the two were tied at even-par 288 and began the playoff on the par-5 15th.

They traded birdies and pars on 1976 Nos. 15 and 16, respectively, Champion: Roger Maltbie, turning the playoff into sudden death beginning on the par-4 288 (E) 17th.

Positioned correctly, the second shot is uphill toward a two-tiered green that is heavily bunkered front left, front right, left and rear right.

Lexie Toth, Dublin Jerome: “I’ve talked with (Muirfield Village head golf professional Larry) Dornisch and he’s always saying, ‘Why did Jack make the last hole so hard? Everyone won’t want to play it again because their last impression won’t be very favorable.’ But that’s the way Jack wanted it.
