Get the facts on stomach bugs to feel better fast Few things can prove more painful or inconvenient than stomach bugs. Digestive tract illnesses can cause persons to spend many hours of the day running to restrooms while confining others to the house for extended periods of time.

Though often temporary, stomach bugs can last several days to more than a week and they may lead to more dire situations if not properly treated.

Causes Stomach bugs are known as gastroenteritis, a condition characterized by an inflamed and irritated stomach and intestines. The Mayo Clinic says people are most likely to contract gastroenteritis after eating contaminated foods or drinking contaminated water. Sharing items, like utensils, with someone who is infected is another way to contract gastroenteritis.

Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virus that enters the body. However, bacteria and parasites also are responsible for stomach bug outbreaks. Viruses that trigger gastroenteritis include adenoviruses, rotaviruses, calciviruses, astroviruses, and noroviruses. Bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis include E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and shingella.

Symptoms Stomach bugs often strike suddenly.

Sufferers may experience queasiness or nausea and a loss of appetite. Pain or bloating in the stomach also may occur.

Vomiting and diarrhea often cause many people to suspect something is wrong, and some stomach conditions are also accompanied by fever, achiness

and lethargy.

Treatment Many people opt for a wait-and-see approach when struck with stomach bugs. Gastroenteritis often heals on its own. Some refer to it as a “24-hour-bug” and find that once the stomach has been purged clean, the offender no longer wreaks havoc on the body. But stomach bugs can be more persistent as well. Sufferers should visit a doctor if vomiting or diarrhea last more than a few days. Doctors may take a stool sample to determine what’s behind the bug. In the event of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic may be needed to clear up the infection. Visiting a doctor when stomach problems persist is also beneficial because he or she may be able to rule out certain conditions, such as colitis, ulcers or Crohn’s disease.

Helpful hints When a stomach bug strikes, it is best to refrain from eating, especially when vomiting regularly. Stick to clear broths and liquids, which are easy on the digestive system, while the stomach is irritated. Once vomiting has subsided, sufferers should opt for a bland diet.

When plagued by diarrhea, the BRAT diet is adviseable. This acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.

These foods can help bind a person and are relatively easy to digest.

Millions of people across the globe suffer from diabetes, a term used to describe a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood pressure resulting from the body’s cells not responding properly to insulin and/or inadequate insulin production. According to researchers at Australia’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, if the spread of type 2 diabetes continues at its current rate, there will be roughly 439 million adults with diabetes across the globe in the year 2030. Though some cases of diabetes cannot be prevented, a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, occurring because the body does not use insulin properly. Initially, the pancreas will make extra insulin to account for the body’s resistance to insulin, but over time the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases as people age, and while there is no way to halt the aging process, there are many other ways for men, women and children to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes.

• Shed those extra pounds. Being overweight increases your risk for a host of ailments, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the American Diabetes Association, losing as little as 10 to 15 pounds can make a significant difference for people looking to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes. When attempting to lose weight, men and women should recognize that making lifestyle changes is a more effective way to shed pounds and keep weight off than fad diets that may promise quick weight loss but tend to be less effective at keeping

Successful weight loss typically involves a combination of physical activity and a healthy diet. • Avoid refined carbohydrates.

Studies have shown that diets rich in refined carbohydrates increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes, while additional studies have shown that diets rich in whole grains protect the body against diabetes.

Researchers examining the results of several studies that explored the relationship between whole grains and diabetes found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains each day can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 21 percent. Refined carbohydrates, which can be found in white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes and many cereals, cause sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, which can increase a person’s risk of diabetes.

Kids’ vitamin deficiency signs A healthy diet is supposed to provide all of the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to sustain a body. But thanks to finicky eating habits and limited choices, many children are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy.

Although many foods are fortified with certain vitamins, they still may not be enough to provide the level of nutrition required for a growing body. Parents may be well informed of a child’s needs of vitamin C to boost immune system function, but they may not be as readily informed about other vitamins that are essential to human health.

• Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system and proper eyesight function. A child lacking in vitamin A may be tired and weak and experience weight loss. Other symptoms include dry eyes, skin scaling and respiratory infections.

• Vitamin B6: Hyperactivity and impulsiveness are often blamed on an underlying medical condition, such as ADHD. But such conditions may be the result of a deficiency in vitamin B6.

• Vitamin B12: Nervous system function is largely governed by proper levels of vitamin B12. Children who do not receive enough vitamin B12 may experience weakness, insomnia, edema, and abdominal pain.

• Vitamin D: Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced in the body after exposure to the sun. Children who spend many hours indoors or wearing thick layers of sunscreen may not get enough vitamin D. Irritability, muscle cramps and even late teething could be tied to vitamin D deficiency.

Ear infection treatment revised Few illnesses plague young children as frequently as ear infections. In fact, research suggests at least half of all children age one or younger will experience an ear infection.

Antibiotics have long been the standard method of treatment for ear infections. However, new guidelines have emerged and a pediatrician may not be so quick to use amoxicillin as a remedy.

In some instances, the fluid becomes infected. Sometimes it is the fluid pushing on the eardrum that causes pain.

Symptoms of an ear infection Adults may be able to voice their symptoms when an ear infection is present, but children are more apt to offer physical clues. EAR INFECTION Continued from previous page • Fever • Presence of fluid draining from the ear • Unresponsiveness to quiet sounds Treatment for ear infections In early 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics revised its previous guidelines for treating acute otitis media, the common middle-ear infection. The changes include asking doctors to be more stringent in diagnosing a cause of the ear infection in order to cut down on the unnecessary use of antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics can result in antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

In children ages 6 months to 12 years, it is the opinion of the AAP that children without severe symptoms should be observed for a few days, as viral ear infections can clear up on their own. Children should be given immediate antibiotics if they have a severe ear infection, defined as a fever of 102.2 F or higher, with or without significant pain. A ruptured ear drum with drainage or an infection in both ears in kids age two or younger also warrants the use of an antibiotic. The guidelines also confirm that amoxicillin should be the antibiotic of choice unless the child is allergic to penicillin or if the child has been treated with amoxicillin during the past month.

who co-authored the AAP recommendations, advises that an ear infection should improve in 72 hours. If the symptoms get worse or don’t improve, antibiotics should be used.

Parents can take some preventive measures to minimize ear infections in children. Breast-feeding infants for at least four months reduces overall episodes of ear infections.

Preventing exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke also can reduce ear infections during infancy.

Children who get recurrent ear infections may benefit from the insertion of ear tubes to drain fluid. Any methods that reduce viral infections also may cut down on the frequency of ear infections.

Antibiotic safety • Children and adults who are prescribed antibiotics should take the medicine as prescribed for the full duration, not just until symptoms wane.

Otherwise the infection may not be fully eradicated and symptoms may recur.

• Do not share antibiotics as doctors usually prescribe a certain type that is most effective against the bacteria causing the infection.

• Antibiotics tend to work rapidly, so if symptoms do not ease up in a short period of time, talk to your doctor.

• Many antibiotics, especially liquid varieties, should be stored in the refrigerator.

• Some antibiotics need to be taken with food, others on an empty stomach. Read all prescribing information carefully.

Exercise benefits the brain, too Regular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power.

According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of “Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter,” exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That’s because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well.

As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.

Improved mood Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don’t just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill. Those in the ex-

ercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active.

Blumenthal’s study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.

Antidote to anxiety Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body’s nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body’s heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur.

Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders.

But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program.

Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).

How to save on prescriptions Prescription drugs can be quite expensive, and even those who have health insurance often pay more than they need to. According to a 2012 Consumer Reports “Best Drugs” poll on prescription drugs, Americans routinely take an average of four medications per day, spending nearly $800 on drug costs each year.

Those who do not have health insurance may have to pay much more out of pocket.

As expensive as prescription medications can be, there are still ways to save money on prescription drug costs.

Comparison shop Believe it or not, drug prices vary depending on the time of the year and even the pharmacy. A person can shop around for the most affordable medication just like they would when buying another product.

Prescription drug apps enable you to search for discounts in your neighborhood.

Read your bill Medical coding and billing is not always accurate. Employees entering codes may put in the wrong information, inadvertently charging a person for the wrong medication. Treat your medical bills as you would any other bill and

verify that the charges are correct. If you have any doubts, check the drug name with your doctor and then consult with the pharmacy to see if an error was made.

Opt for generic medications Generic versions of hundreds of brand name prescription drugs are available and typically cost a lot less money.

With a generic medicine you are not paying for marketing and advertising costs. These drugs are routinely tested for efficacy and safety. There is really no reason to select a name-brand medicine over the generic alternative, even when it comes to over-the-counter drugs. Ask your doctor on your script to check the box for the generic option.

Use a preferred pharmacy mail-order service Certain insurance companies have negotiated discounts with mail-order pharmacies and pass on the savings to their members. Medicare and other government-sponsored plans may offer the same type of deal, and consumers can save a substantial amount of money by opting for mail-order service.

Eyes on health: What your eyes can tell doctors People who have been putting off eye examinations may want to call their opthalmologists to schedule an appointment. That’s because vision checkups can do more than protect your eyes. By examining the eyes, doctors may have a window into health problems affecting other areas of the body.

Researchers recently discovered a link between detected retinal amyloid plaques and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. While evidence was found in lab mice, autopsies of at least eight Alzheimer’s disease patients have also shown amyloid plaques, which are known to interfere with memory and other mental functions, present in the retinas. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., are gearing up for larger studies of humans to determine if an Alzheimer’s imaging technique can be perfected.

Cancer: Some can-

cer metastases can be detected during an eye exam. The presence of a bump or brown spot on the eyelid also may be indicative of skin cancer.

Many malignant eyelid tumors are basal-cell carcinoma. If the spot is brown, it’s more likely to

be malignant melanoma.

Thyroid issues: When the outer one-third of the brow (the part closest to the ear) begins to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease. The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, and thyroid hormones are

essential to hair production. Hair loss may occur elsewhere, but is much more visible in the brows.

Clogged arteries: Blockages in the smaller veins in the retina may indicate clogs caused by arterial plaque. This will show up as a retinal oc-

clusion in a visual exam.

If blood vessels in the eyes are blocked, clogged arteries may be present elsewhere in the body, so a cardiology workup may be ordered.

Bell’s palsy: The inability to close one eye or to control tear production

in that eye may be a sign of Bell’s palsy. This is a condition of the nervous system that controls facial muscles, causing temporary paralysis in one side of the face.

Sometimes Bell’s palsy follows a viral or bacterial infection.
