Brain training center opens in Columbus A new LearningRx Brain Training Center recently opened its doors in Columbus, offering clinically proven programs for children and adults who struggle with learning, memory, reading, thinking quickly or paying attention. The owners, Jack and David O’Reilly, decided to get into this business because of the life-changing impact of brain training.

Knowing and hearing many stories of personal struggles turned into success provided a call to action. The life changing stories included children’s grades being improved, children with ADHD getting off medicine and adults seeing improvements in their job performance, memory and focus. These made them want to provide this training to the people of central Ohio. Many of the company’s clients are struggling students, although O’Reilly explains that brain training is an entirely different process than tutoring. “Tutoring reteaches information, but doesn’t address the reason the information didn’t ‘stick’ in the first place. Our programs address the root cause of learning struggles by changing the way the brain thinks, reads, learns, focuses and remembers.

When core brain skills are stronger, learning is easier. In fact, brain training typically eliminates the need for future tutoring altogether.�

The programs also help children and adults diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia or autism, and for those who do not have diagnoses but are simply frustrated by some aspect of their mental performance at school, at work or in life. These include

career adults who want to perform better on the job, TBI victims who want to regain lost brain skills, and senior adults who want to delay or even reverse age-related cognitive decline.

Using intense game-like exercises done one-on-one with a personal brain trainer, LearningRx programs stimulate the brain to strengthen and even create neural connections, which in turn, strengthen the underlying cognitive skills that make it possible to think and learn, O’Reilly explains. He adds that data culled from the results of 6,000 clients shows that the LearningRx program also increases IQ an average of 15 points in about 12 weeks of training.

Dr. Ken Gibson is the founder of LearningRx. It was the early ‘70s, and the question was being asked by Gibson, a pediatric optometrist and specialist in visual processing, “How can we help people learn easier and faster?� Deter-

mined to find the answer, Dr. Gibson began compiling clinical experiences with children and adults. In addition to his own practice, he not only founded preschools and learning centers, but worked with kids in those settings, too. He also began studying breaking research on the brain and applying those developments to his growing body of work.

Soon he discovered an interesting pattern. He realized that students were paying attention better and recalling important facts more easily after being coached through short, but intense, periods of mental exercise. The doctor was intrigued. Could a program of intense mental exercise change the way students performed in school?

It certainly has changed many people’s lives. Dr. Gibson was on to something. He was truly changing the brain in ways that made learning and thinking easier than before.

How to be the best CEO for your family

At the Sylvan Learning Centers of Central Ohio, we encourage parents to become their family’s ‘CEO’ by taking an active role in their childrens’ education and working to put them on the pathway to academic success. It’s not always an easy job but it is certainly one of the most important roles a parent can have.

1. Join your local PTA. This is a great opportunity to tap into a network of teachers and other parents. It’s a forum for sharing ideas, concerns and even experiences.

2. Talk to kids regularly about school. As a parent, you may default to asking your child “How was school today?” Try asking questions like, “What did your teacher read to the class today?” or “What was the best part of your day?” to get your son or daughter talking.

3. Identify academic strengths and weaknesses. We all have strengths and weaknesses. If your child is struggling in a particular subject, talk to teachers about what you can do to help, or call us at Sylvan. We have lots of great ideas.

4. Have a positive attitude toward learning. Kids are very perceptive and can easily pick up on their parents’ feelings and attitudes. Show your child that you value education and that learning never stops!

5. Develop a partnership with your child’s school. Establish a relationship with your child’s teacher now and be better able to address potential problems before they arise.

6. Reinforce lessons at home. Be excited about learning! For instance, if your child is studying marine life in science class, plan a weekend trip to the local aquarium.

• Plan for an indoor picnic.

Kids will probably want to spend a portion of the day playing out in the snow. After all of that physical activity, they’re bound to be famished.

Spread a blanket out on the living room floor and enjoy a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and hot chocolate. Kids will enjoy the novelty of eating this way.

• Get cooking. Another way to fill the day is to have children participate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-filling recipes. Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread is another fun activity and enables kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors.

• Go the movies. If roads are passable, consider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee.

Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-filled outing.

• Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bottles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard and create some pictures with the snow as their canvas.

• Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning

may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belongings in their rooms.

• Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and introduce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas.
