Welcome to the 2016 Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest Kids are back in school, temperatures are starting to cool off and the cheers of football fans are in the air. Now that summer’s on its way out, it’s time to turn your focus to preparing your home for the winter months ahead, including getting it ready for holiday entertaining. Whether you’re preparing for fall home improvement projects, looking for seasonal decorating ideas or wanting to rub elbows with home improvement celebrities, the 2016 fall Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest is the place to be. Don’t miss this three-day event — sponsored by Ohio Mulch and Rosati Windows — taking place Sept. 9-11 at the Ohio Expo Center’s Bricker Building. Although spring is often thought of as home improvement season, “fall is actually a great time to complete many home and garden projects,” said Stephen Buzza, director of shows for Dispatch Media Group. Many projects are ideally suited for fall, including checking your HVAC system to make sure it is in strong working order and power-washing your home’s exterior to prevent mold and mildew during the cold and grey months, just to name a couple. Also, your lawn’s health in the spring can be tied to the maintenance you perform in the fall, like aerating, reseeding patchy areas and fertilizing. To help you through your fall checklist, or nudge you toward finally starting the projects that slipped away from you last spring, the Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest offers more than 250 home and garden craftsmen and experts under one roof. They’ll descend on the Ohio Expo Center to give you advice, direction and professional help with everything from windows to roofs to landscaping and more. Once you find the help you need to get your home improvement projects under way, turn your attention to what looks good in the driveway next to your newly remodeled home. Find the car of your dreams at the 2016 Auto Showcase, which will feature cars, vans and trucks from Cadillac of Dublin and Liberty Automotive. In addition, there will be a full schedule of presentations, including a panel of local garden gurus, seasonal decorating ideas and kids activities, as well as feature presentations by celebrities known for their salvage and restoration projects.

If you’re interested in the recent architectural salvage trend, Robert Kulp and Mike Whiteside of DIY Network’s “Salvage Dawgs,” will appear at the show at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Dawgs are known for extracting architectural elements from private homes and classic historical properties as part of their mission to reclaim, renew and redefine architectural salvage for a sustainable future. You’ll be able to snap a photo with Kulp and Whiteside after their appearance, which is sponsored by Columbus Architectural Salvage.

Gorgeous Garden

If you’re spending some of the year’s final warm-weather days working on your garden, take a break by visiting the show to get ideas and inspiration from Cedarbrook Nursery’s “Water Retreat” fall garden. The garden features two waterfalls, ponds, a relaxing natural arbor, and lots of fall color from black-eyed Susans, mums, hydrangeas, Russian sage, Knock-out roses and many more. To prepare for spring blooms in your own garden, visit the Berbee’s Best booth at 147 to take advantage of the Flowering Bulb Bonanza sale. Dutch Mill Greenhouse will bring 10,000 garden bulbs to sell at whole-

sale prices. Get them while supplies last. And at the Simple Bath Home Stage, get answers to your burning gardening questions from our Garden Guru panel, attend hands-on clinics for creating fall centerpieces and gather other decorating tips to help you prepare for the holidays.

Another benefit of attending the Fall Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest is the opportunity to win prizes that will be up for grabs. Just take the game card that will be given to you when you enter the show to the prize kiosk area. There, complete a quick survey and you’ll be entered to win the prizes, including shares of $2,500 in “Show Bucks” (certificates that can be spent like cash with participating show exhibitors); a shed kit from Lowe’s valued at more than $1,000; Ohio State football and Columbus Crew tickets and more.

Your Team

All three days will feature two popular fall activities — shopping and football. “There is so much to do each day,” Buzza said. In the Everdry Sports Lounge, watch the top games all weekend on

According to Buzza, “for those wanting to get a jump on their holiday shopping, the Holiday Fest portion of the show will feature more than 80 merchants selling all types of goods from Ivory Barns’ selection of items made from reclaimed wood to Sweet Peas Stamping, who will showcase their custom stamped metal jewelry.” And to get a taste of that holiday spirit, take a walk through the Christmas Tree Village, developed by Nelson’s Seasonal Decor, while listening to Christmas music provided by WSNY. In addition to these weekend-long attractions, each day of the show will have something different to offer.

Brews & Free Parking Friday

Kick off your weekend at the show on Friday, Sept. 9, and take advantage of Free Parking with a voucher sponsored by Meineke. See page 5 for voucher, or find one online at DispatchHomeAndGardenShow.com. For a $15 ticket that includes admission to the show, you can participate in the Columbus Craft Beer Fest on Friday, Sept. 9. The ticket to the Craft Beer Fest includes six three-ounce samples of some of the area’s top brews, plus a full pour of your choice.

Blooms, Veterans

and kids

The first 500 guests on Saturday, Sept. 10, will receive a pack of five bulbs for fall planting from Dutch Mill Greenhouse. Sunday, Sept. 11, is Kids Day, which includes a Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinic. This is a great way for your children to interact with tools, follow instructions and build something they’ll want to display at home. Young ones can also participate in face painting, see animals from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, get safety tips from the Columbus Fire Department in their Fire Safety House and pick out a mini pumpkin from the Lohstroh Family Farms’ pumpkin patch to decorate and take home. Military and first responders will receive free admission with ID at the door on Sept. 11. Also that day, Hamilton Remodeling will be giving away free American flags to 3,000 attendees and Closets By Design will be giving away 500 drawstring backpacks to the first 500 show goers. This is just a taste of what you can look forward to at the show. At press time, many more attractions were being finalized. For updates, visit DispatchHomeAndGardenShow.com.

‘Dawgs’ give new meaning to the upcycling trend

Robert Kulp and Mike Whiteside co-founded Black Dog Salvage, an architectural salvage company based in Roanoke, Va., 16 years ago. In 2012, their amazing work went public with the DIY Network series “Salvage Dawgs,” which has aired for six seasons and counting. The show chronicles the unique situations that Kulp and Whiteside encounter during their daily work, which include bidding on houses and buildings that are condemned to demolition, so that they can extract any architectural elements or historical properties they consider to be of value from the premises. The reclaimed pieces are then reused or repurposed before being sold to assorted clients. From old prisons to former hospitals to decommisioned navy ships, Kulp, Whiteside and their team — the ‘dawgs’ — are always running into something they haven’t seen before. And there’s more to the business than money. With every salvage operation, they rescue extraordinary pieces that would otherwise be dumped into a landfill. We recently had a chance to have a conversation with the “Salvage Dawgs.” Here’s what they had to say. M = Mike Whiteside • R = Robert Kulp Q: You had owned Black Dog Salvage for more than a decade before

“Salvage Dogs” aired. So how did the show come about? M: Well Robert and I had been approached by several people who wanted to do a similar show, but it never turned out well until a good fishing buddy of mine, Bill Hayes, who’s a reality TV documentarian, took our dare to pitch the show. He did a pilot, and here we are 85 episodes later. Q: What’s the importance of pre-

IMAGE COURTESY TAMARA BOLTEN Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp

serving, extracting or repurposing architectural elements? M: The core of our business is recycling. We save stuff from going into the trash by either using it for its intended purpose or recreating it into something else, therefore capturing the energy that was initially spent to build that piece. R: So the whole system is designed to stand between the demolition contractor and the landfill; we’re just trying to pick these carcasses clean before they reach their final destination. Q: How did the two of you get involved in salvage efforts in general? M: Robert and I have been in business 17 years now, and from day one we’ve been reusing stuff. But mankind’s been recycling since the beginning of history. A lot of stuff that we find in houses has been used and recycled from other houses. R: For 16 years, we didn’t know what to call what we do. Then, things caught up with us and people put a brand on it — right now that brand is “upcycling.” But like Mike said, it’s been going on for all ages, because people recognize that they can save money and energy by utilizing something that’s already there. Q: What is one of the most memorable pieces that you’ve saved as part of Salvage Dawgs? M: I think one of the most landmark pieces we’ve found is a mock Eiffel Tower that we salvaged in Columbus two years ago. It’s now assembled on someone’s property here locally. When we first saw it I thought “oh my goodness, what are you going to do with that?” R: My favorite is a terracotta façade that we took apart in Boardman, Ohio. It used to be on the front of a movie theater in Pittsburgh before it was taken to Boardman and put on the front of a modern building. The building’s new owner didn’t want it, so we took the dawgs up there and disassembled it. We

later sold it to somebody from Florida. Q: How much specialized knowledge is required in this line of work? M: Probably the most important part of it is to understand what you’re saving. If you’re just pulling up flooring then it’s kind of a no-brainer, but if you’re taking apart something that has to go back up the same way, it takes some skill. R: Having a background in the construction industry is helpful, just simply because if you know how it goes together, you’ve got a head start on how it comes apart. Now unfortunately some things were built not to come apart. Q: Do you both have a background in the construction industry, then? R: I have a degree in building and construction from Virginia Tech University. M: My background is in the marine business; I was a yacht captain for 15 years, and that taught me how to build and work on certain things. Between Robert’s understanding of construction and my “we’re-going-to-get-it-done” attitude, we’re a good couple — an odd couple — but good couple (laughs). Q: Is there anything surprising or weird you’ve found that stands out? R: We’ve run into some bizarre things, like when Mike and I were taking a house apart in the middle of North Carolina and just happened upon some mid-late 1800s glass negatives from a doctor’s collection of medical photos. They were certainly popular. The stranger the object, the more people love it. Q: Do you see this work expanding throughout the country? R: It looks like we will probably be traveling farther in upcoming seasons than we have in the past. — Interview by Denise Blough, Dispatch Media Group

Harp carving out path in carpentry and on DIY Network

About six years ago, Clint Harp was watching YouTube videos to learn how to operate a wood lathe. Now, Harp is widely known across the U.S. and beyond for his woodworking and furniture artistry on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” Harp always knew he wanted to work with his hands, and after four unfulfilling years of working in the medical sales industry, he decided it was time to follow his dream. He quit his six-figure-salary career and began down the path that would lead him to found his own carpentry business with his wife, Kelly Harp. The two moved to Waco, Texas, in 2011 and founded Harp Design Co., which has grown to include furniture piecesas well as home goods and decor that Kelly procures. How did you decide to quit your medical sales career to become a carpenter? I grew up around my grandfather, who built houses and did a lot of amazing things with his hands. I always knew that I wanted to do that to some degree, but didn’t necessarily know how. I found myself moving to Houston in 2007 — I’m originally from Atlanta — and getting what I called a “big-boy” job in the medical field, in sales. I did that for about four years, and really just didn’t enjoy my life at all. After a lot of soul-searching and many interesting turns of events, I decided to quit my job and go for my dream of

building furniture and owning a company with my wife, Kelly. We both wanted to do something we felt passionate about, so we had this crazy idea and what I would describe as an incredibly loose business plan. Then we jumped off a cliff with our little plan in hand and the next thing you know, everything got turned upside down. What are some of the biggest challenges that you faced in your early days as a carpenter? A lot of it was just figuring out how to do certain things, even simple stuff. Like if you’re sanding a table and you don’t realize that the sander is leaving squiggly vibration marks on the table, so when you stain it you’re like “what in the world, why does my table have these crazy marks on it?” I didn’t have a master carpenter standing next to me at all times; I had to fig-

ure it out on my own. But if I’m good at something, it’s figuring it out. I might be frustrated and want to quit, but I’ll stick with it until I figure it out. How did you make the decision to always use 100-percent recycled or reclaimed wood? In the beginning, the decision to use 100 percent reclaimed wood was made because we wanted to do something that helped the environment and it was all we could afford. We still use reclaimed wood, but not all of the time, simply because I no longer have the time to go out and search for it. We also have to be a bit more consistent with our wood now because of our Harp Design Co. furniture line.

2011. She was going to graduate school at Baylor University, which is why we moved to Waco. Then, when things took off, she decided not to finish her degree because the business needed her, which was exciting. We have a storefront attached to our shop with all of the things that we make as well as home goods and décor that Kelly has procured. Whatever she brings in, she matches to the aesthetics of the furniture. We like to sell things from small businesses or artisans to help expose their work.

What is the dynamic like working with your wife, Kelly? It’s an interesting dynamic because you’ve got a husband and wife working together, and every time you talk about that in front of a big group of people What have you learned from ownyou’ll hear someone say “oh lord, I could ing a small business? never do that,” and I understand why, I’ve learned that the reason small and so does Kelly. Flowering Bulb Bonanza 10,000 bulbs on sale at the show at sizzling wholesale prices There’s nothing better than that first burst of spring color popping through your garden beds. And if fall is for planting (it is), then the Fall Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest is the place to get the bulbs you need for those beautiful spring blooms. The Leo Berbee Bulb Co., a family owned and operated business that dates back to 1972 and the only distributer of bulbs in Ohio, will be selling 10,000 fall planting bulbs at incredible prices — but only while supplies last! Berbee, located in Marysville, imports bulbs directly from Holland and ships millions of bulbs to growers and independent garden centers all over the world. The company’s retail store, Dutch Mill Greenhouse, also offers hundreds of bulb varieties for shoppers in central Ohio. But from Sept. 9-11, you won’t have to travel to Marysville, because for the three days of the Fall Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest, Dutch Mill Greenhouse will be hosting a Flowering Bulb Bonanza Sale with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, allium and crocus sold at special show pricing. And, even better, the first 500

folks through the doors on Saturday, Sept. 10, will receive a FREE pack of five bulbs, courtesy of Dutch Mill Greenhouse. Experts from their company will be at Booth 147 all weekend to answer questions and give advice on planting your bulbs. Henk Berbee, who brought the company to the United States from Holland in the 1970s, will make a special appearance on Saturday. “We will be bringing a total of 20 different unique varieties and colors to choose from,” said Bob Berbee. “And the bulbs we have selected are good for naturalizing, meaning they can be counted on to come up year after year and spread informally throughout your garden.”

You wake up on a quiet, sunny Saturday. A ray of light slowly stretches across your bedroom floor as the morning comes to bloom. Your slumbering cat is taking advantage of the warmth. You smile as your eyes follow the source of light to the window and notice your spouse relaxing in the backyard with their morning coffee. You think back to your childhood, when you often saw a similar image of your father from the kitchen as you ate breakfast. What would a house be without windows? You would surely miss the daily glimpses of children laughing and dogs playing, and you wouldn’t enjoy being blind to fleeting visits from blue jays, rabbits and squirrels. Rosati Windows of Columbus understands that the importance of a window goes far beyond its face value, which is why the company is dedicated to crafting quality window products. When Mike Rosati founded Rosati Windows in 2000, he had only one fellow employee and a 6,000-square foot factory. “I had been in the business for 20 plus years — working for someone else — and decided that it was time to start my own business,” Rosati said. “I wanted to build my own windows and sell directly to the homeowner.”

■

Frame your view with Rosati Windows And he did. After a year or so of working 16-hour days, seven days a week, Rosati slowly grew his staff and more importantly, a client base. Today, Rosati Windows employs more than 100 individuals and operates a 60,000-square-foot factory, where each window is custom made before being installed in its home. The company is the only window manufacturer in central Ohio that sells directly to the public. “And we offer vinyl and wood windows in any style imaginable,” Rosati said, adding that all of the company’s products are Energy Star certified, meaning they save more energy and money than non-certified windows. Because the glass is so energy efficient, more people are opting for larger windows, and even entire glass window walls, Rosati said. Another trend is darker window frames, and colored frames in general, which is why Rosati Windows offers 256 custom exterior color options. “Custom color has become a huge part of our business,” Rosati said. And don’t let the name mislead you — Rosati Windows also offers exterior doors. Beyond the realm of production, the company is committed to furthering the efforts of various local organizations. “Columbus has been very good to IMAGE THINKSTOCKPHOTOS.COM Rosati Windows, so in turn we have tried

to give back,” Rosati said. Rosati Windows donates to nonprofits such as Ohio Cancer Research Associates; the Buckeye Ranch, which provides resources to help troubled adolescents; and the Justice League of Ohio, which funds lawyers to help kids who have been battered or sexually assaulted. “Most of the organizations we contribute to help children, which is something that’s very important to me,” Rosati said. “There are a lot of kids today who don’t get a fair shake. I want these children to have a shot in life, and I want to make sure that they get every opportunity to make something out of themselves.” If you’re in need of some window — or door — shopping, be sure to stop by the Rosati Windows booth (No. 14) at The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show and Holiday Fest from Sept. 9–11 at the Ohio Expo Center.

Why mulch matters There’s more to mulch than meets the eye — though beauty is important, too. Finding the right type of mulch means weighing factors of time, location, weather, plant life, the area’s current condition, what mulch has been used in the past and more, said Ron Frost, director of retail sales at Ohio Mulch. Quality mulch is especially important in Ohio, where most of the soil contains clay. Plant roots struggle to grow in clay-based soil because it’s so compact, and it’s also slow to warm in the spring, leaving plants without enough nutrients. To combat this problem, Ohio Mulch sells mulch that composts, or breaks down into organic matter rich in nutrients. When Jim Weber founded Ohio Mulch in 1984, it was to address a market shortage that he experienced while working for a landscape company, which had to go to multiple stores just to get enough mulch for clients. Today, Ohio Mulch produces and sells more mulch than any other manufacturer in the state. But it’s not just about quantity, which is why a lot of care is taken during production. “A lot of mulch companies process their material and then send it out for application right away,” Frost said. “We age the mulch for four to six months, before we process it into a fin-

ished product.” Throughout this aging system, the mulch reaches temperatures of up to 170 degrees, killing any bugs or weed material. Of the 19 mulch varieties sold by Ohio Mulch — all certified by the National Mulch and Soil Council — hardwood bark mulches are the most popular. “Hardwood mulch composts quickly into soil, providing much-needed nutrients to soil, flowers and other plants,” Frost said. “It’s also dark in color, which is an aesthetic that customers tend to be drawn to.” Another highly sought after product consists of pine bark nuggets that are about one-eighth inch in size and are designed to be placed directly around flowers or trees. The tiny pine bark bodes especially well with spring and summer flowers because they can retain moisture, as well as provide nutrients that are necessary for plants trying to survive in summer heat, Frost said. Mulch isn’t the only way that Ohio

The company makes use of debris that would otherwise be packing landfills, such as yard and food waste. “Our sustainability efforts reach far,” Frost said. “We do a lot of different things in the community to maximize reusable material.” Each year, Ohio Mulch rakes in millions of tons of yard waste from people, companies and even city entities. They use the waste as a heating accelerant by grinding it into mulch material before it’s aged.

The company also collects leftover vegetables each week from Kroger and Walmart and uses them to make a nutrient-rich leaf compost called Green Envy, made from 100-percent vegetables. It takes a full year to make. Ohio Mulch has 25 locations, all of which accept yard waste. Two more locations will open in spring 2017 — in Columbus and in Lancaster.
