We sure did, because for the first time, the Home & Garden Show is taking you into the woods with a full-size cabin. The Luxe Cabin Retreat — built by the Mount Vernon Barn Co. and Lowe’s, designed by Moody Nolan and in partnership with Bungalow Home, Hamilton Parker, Oberfield’s and the Columbus Landscape Association — is just that: a place you can envision yourself taking a respite from the day-to-day stress of working life. See how an old barn becomes a cabin retreat

Once upon a time, Doug Morgan was one of the country’s top mergers and acquisitions lawyers. For the past three years, though, he has put his acquisitions skills (as well as his history degree from Harvard) to use in a totally different way as owner of the Mount Vernon Barn Co. There, he lives out a dream that had been a mere hobby for the past three decades: Finding mid-19th century barns, purchasing them, dismantling them and repurposing their components for use in the construction of new barns, homes, cabins and cabinetry. One of his company’s cabins — one that’s being billed as a Luxe Cabin Retreat — will be a top attraction when Ohio Mulch presents the Home & Garden Show. Its framing comes from a barn Morgan and his crew found in Stoutsville, Ohio, near Circleville. We spoke with Morgan about the construction process Mount Vernon uses, as well as what the future may hold for barn-repurposing enthusiasts like himself. What’s in store for Home & Garden Show visitors when they see your team’s cabin? It’ll be 24-by-30, so it’ll have a footprint of a little over 600 square feet with a loft in it. Something that should be pointed out is it will have a hand-hewn timber frame that predates the Civil War. These are essentially man-made sculptures out of virgin timber. The trees the barn was

made out of most likely began growing in the 1500s. Ohio had some of the most amazing hardwood forests that ever existed in the history of the world. They say that squirrels could go from one end of Ohio to the other, all in trees. I just can’t fathom what it would’ve looked like. Can you give me a sense of the journey — from a barn in Stoutsville to a cabin in the Ohio Expo Center? We acquired the barn last spring, and it was disassembled in September. We took off the siding and stripped it down to its timber frame. Eventually, we took the roof off, knocked out the 1-inch-diameter pegs that held the framing together and carefully dismantled the timber frame so we didn’t break anything. Then, we transported the pieces back to a farm in Knox County, power washed it and put covers on it. At midnight on Feb. 9, we’ll start working on it (at the Ohio Expo Center) and should have it back up at 8 a.m. Then we’ll put rafters up, put siding up, put a porch made out of old timbers we have on it and put the roof on. The roof will be made out of reclaimed corrugated metal with a nice, natural, rusty patina that people pay a lot of money for. Do you find that the original barn owners like that the wood is going to live on? There’s a centennial farm near Utica, and they had an 1830s-era barn that started falling off its foundation. They

contacted me to see what we could do and what it might cost to restore it. The owners talked it over and decided it was better to sell it and put up another, more functional barn. I found a home for their old barn in Gahanna,

and the new owners have invited the original owners in Utica over for the barn-raising coming up. Using reclaimed materials in building and renovating is a hot trend right now. When did you start to really see it

take off? It’s been big on the East Coast and in places like Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Whitefish, Mont., for a long time, and now you can’t pick up an issue of Architectural Digest without finding repurposed, old timber frame structures. I’ve got seven projects going in central Ohio, so I hope it’s not a fad. I don’t think it is. We certainly have the best barns here in Ohio right under our noses. That leads me to my last question: Will this good, old wood from these good, old barns ever run out? At some point it will run out. As of a few years ago there were estimated to be 25,000 of these old barns. Not all of them were hand-hewn because some are from after the Civil War when sawmills started showing up, but they still have mortise and tenon and wood pegs. They’ve been obsolete for modern farming for at least 20 or 30 years. They’re just not big enough for modern equipment, and it’s harder for farmers to justify maintaining them, so they’ve been decaying for several decades now. We’re estimating to be losing 2,000 a year to decay, rot and teardowns. And the pace of decay is accelerating. I feel that we have 10 to 15 years of barns left, and I feel like I’m getting to witness the end of the golden age of barns. I’m honored. Darrell Dawson, Dispatch Media Group

2014 Home & Garden Show

Garden Showcase presents ideas for spring and summer outdoor entertaining Year after year, many guests surveyed at the Home & Garden Show say the garden showcase is their favorite attraction. And it’s easy to see why. With the cold winters central Ohio’s known for, show visitors will take any opportunity they can get to be transported to a time of year known more for blasts of color and gatherings on the patio than gray skies and staying inside. And it sure doesn’t hurt that the gardens at the show offer those who walk through them endless ideas for their own yards. The theme of this year’s garden showcase is “Spring Fever.” Helping you catch it are gardens created by these top Columbus-area landscapers: Benchmark Landscape

Construction, Cedarbrook Landscaping & Garden Center, Five Seasons Landscape Management, Hedge Landscape, Landscape Design Solutions, Oakland Nursery, Riepenhoff Landscape, Seely’s Landscape Nursery, Shearer Landscaping, Spellacy’s Turf-Lawn, Warwick’s Landscaping and Yard Solutions. We spoke with Riepenhoff landscape architect Nick Besser to get a sense of what show visitors can expect to see in the gardens, as well as what’s hot in outdoor spaces this spring. What are some of the trends you’re seeing in the landscape and garden industry? We’re seeing that man-made pavers are still rising steadily in popularity. There are a lot of

new materials out there, and the trend is toward larger slabs — like, 20-by-30-inch pavers — as opposed to smaller, bricksized units. The other thing we’re seeing are more materials that resemble natural materials, like wood planking. I’d expect to see some of these sorts of things at the show. How is Riepenhoff’s garden shaping up? Ours will be a tropicalthemed garden, which is something people have been asking for recently. People are trying to mimic the tropics. Normally, those are nonhardy materials, so you would need hardy materials to do that in central Ohio. Coral bells, hydrangeas and ornamental grasses can take on

a tropical look, though. It’s just a matter of combining materials — different textures, different layers — and we can put together something that looks tropical-esque. What are you looking forward to, overall, with this year’s garden showcase? I guess I’m always looking for new and interesting things. One of the things I’ll be looking for at other vendors is another big trend in the landscape industry, which is fire in the landscape, whether it’s fireplaces or pizza ovens. It’s not exactly new, but it’s still hot. What are some simple things homeowners can do to their backyards or gardens to make them more appealing? From an aesthetic standpoint, one of the biggest things

is maintenance. Clean it up, make nice bed edges, put mulch down, and you’ll see an enormous difference when it comes to the visual appeal of the space. For physical appeal, the main thing you need to do is assess what you want out of the space. If you want to have a cookout with seating for eight, you need to make sure the space is large enough. Functionality is really an individual thing. What’s functional for me and functional for you are two different things. The whole process really starts with a little self study. How does your family intend to use the space?

Q&A with HGTV’s

Genevieve Gorder

Genevieve Gorder first burst onto the scene in 2000 when she was one of the featured designers on TLC’s megapopular Trading Spaces. Since then, the awardwinning talent has become one of America’s favorite interior designers — and has maintained a steady television presence through such shows as HGTV Star, and Dear Genevieve. As she prepares to visit Columbus for a Feb. 14 appearance at the Home & Garden Show, Gorder let us know what may be in store — both on Valentine’s Day and for 2015 in general. What design trends are you seeing gaining in popularity this spring? 2015 is all about The Nordic. The Viking is here. It’s taken 1,200 years, but they’re raging right now. What does this mean for the home? Tassels, ropes, netting, string black and white palettes with pops of salmon and yellow, fringe on bedding, throws and floor coverings, and iced metals, like brass, copper and pewter. What are a few inexpensive tips you can give homeowners to make the insides of their homes look better and more modern? Accessories are the least expensive and most powerful change up to any space beyond painting. A throw, a mantle vignette, a pouf — these are the transient residents of a home. Switch them in and out. Play with colors you’re scared of.

When you go to a hotel or restaurant or a friend’s house for the first time, do you find things you’d change, design-wise, the moment you walk in? Yes. This is why people are scared to invite me over. I see things immediately, but it doesn’t prohibit me from enjoying myself and enjoying the space. I don’t bite. If you could redesign any room from any TV show past or present, which would it be? I don’t want to redesign my own work. It was what it was when it was. Remember: I wasn’t the one who made people cry because they didn’t like it. They cried because they liked it. I take design seriously but not myself. What can visitors to the Home & Garden Show expect to hear you talk about when you come to Columbus? I like to open up the floor to as much as my audience would like to know, so there will be a big open floor Q&A that generally covers just about anything in life, including design. I’ll also be talking about what’s coming in homes for our new year — what to watch for, how to incorporate, what to laugh at. I mean, I’m a Midwesterner too, so there will be heavy doses of self-deprecation and straight shooting. Can you tell our readers about your magazine, Real
