GO BUCKS! luncheon will feature Jeff Logan

Come and join us for the annual GO BUCKS! Luncheon, that will have a party atmosphere in preparation of the big football game against Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 26.

The luncheon will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17. We are excited to have Jeff Logan, a former player with Archie Griffin from 1974 – 1977, as our speaker.

He was part of four Big Ten Championship teams and was a first team All-Big Ten selection in 1976 and 1977. He was also an academic AllAmerican in 1977.

Logan and his father, Dick, were one of only two father/son combinations to both play under Woody Hayes.

Following a short career in professional football with the Baltimore Colts, Logan returned to Columbus.

He is a member and past president of the National Football Foundation

Chair’s perspective

School board race was a learning experience By the time this is published, the November 2011 election will be over. We now know the end results of the school levy, Issue 2, and the school board race.

All three of these ballot issues had an impact on the future of Hilliard and I can’t begin to speculate in advance what happened on Nov. 8. Regardless of the outcomes — my hope, and my one expectation — is that we saw very large numbers, and maybe even record numbers, of voters turn out to the polls.

What a year for controversial ballot issues. Obviously Issue 2 was a polarizing issue for the state. A school levy during an economic downturn is never an easy sell regardless of the need or the reasons. Luckily, this school board election has been absent most of the contention that the issues above faced. I en-

joyed meeting and getting to know some of the other candidates and appreciated their civility. I stayed away from discussing anything about the election HEATHER here in this perspecKECK tive once I decided to run for the school board, but now that the election is over — and I either won a seat or I didn’t — I wanted to reach out and give a few personal pats on the back.

To the other candidates in this race: Congratulations. Whether you won or lost — congratulations. It is hard to put yourself out there and run for office. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done

(twice) and I’ve taken two bar exams in two different states, given birth twice, and had two Achilles tendon surgeries.

So, to Doug, Brian, Homer, and Justin — congratulations and thank you for the courage it took to run for office. A position on the board of education is something that is difficult and time-consuming. Many residents have an opinion on whether or not you’re doing your job; but it is those same residents don’t step up to bat when the time comes to run for office themselves. So, to whoever will be taking the school board seats in January — stand by your convictions and remember that a board is comprised of five people who represent many diverse interests in this city. Working together will move you and the school district forward.

There will be 118 crafters who will fill the gym and fieldhouse areas catering to the more than 4,000 shoppers.

This is the Chamber’s main fundraiser and it requires many volunteers to make it a successful event. Please consider volunteering at any of the following times. You can help and connect with other chamber members while you work.

Aside from the unbelievable boredom that would invoke, we would never learn. And we would never grow. Different can be good if we are willing to set aside our pride and open our minds and listen. What I’ve learned over the past few months talking to a lot of residents is that we all want what is best and we all have the same end goal — we’re just on different paths to reach it.

I might take Norwich, while you take Main Street, but eventually, we will both end up in Old Hilliard. If we keep our focus on the destination, we can find

compromise on the route.

Lastly, thank you to the residents, businesses, and teachers who supported me — I’ve felt humbled by your belief that I was the right person for the job. Thank you to everyone who showed up to exercise the right to vote. Thank you again, to the candidates, for your desire to serve the students and the people of our district.

To everyone even considering running for school board or any other local/state/or even federal office — do it! There are many ways to serve your fellow man and giving back to your community is an honorable one when done for the right reasons.

Historical society and Destination Hilliard presents Olde Hilliard Christmas The Olde Hilliard Christmas is an event to get everyone in the holiday spirit from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Friday Dec. 2.

Hollyfest Scholarship Auction 2011 The Hollyfest Scholarship Foundation, founded to give back to the community, just celebrated its 29th year, providing scholarships amounting to $31,000, the largest local scholarship awarded to graduates from the three Hilliard area high schools.

The event has raised just under an impressive $300,000 in scholarships for area students.

The auction was held at the Makoy Center’s beautiful Emerald Room on Friday, Nov. 4, with just under 200 people in attendance.

Guests arrived and enjoyed bidding on silent auction items — ranging from artwork, spa services, and special packages donated by numerous local businesses.

Once the silent auction ended, a delicious dinner was served and guests tried their hand at winning $1,000 in a reverse raffle drawing that occurred throughout the night.

After dinner and a few words from Libby Gierach, president and CEO of the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce, and the event chair, Heather Keck, a live auction began featuring items such as a Caribbean getaway, a week in a condo in Fort Meyers, Fla., March Madness OSU men’s basketball game tickets and much more.

Throughout the evening, guests could also take a souvenir home by taking pictures in a photo booth, set up by Shutterbooth.

Small Business Saturday set for Nov. 26 Pledge your support for small business Saturday.

The second annual Small Business Saturday, sponsored by American Express, is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

ed to putting pen to paper and taking action on your interest to begin to leverage and/or improve upon your use of interns. Customer service standards must be upheld Let’s go back to school and remind ourselves why customer service is so important and review some of the basics. We live in an era of technology and when used right, it can be a great help to salespeople.

However, technology should never replace customer service; those standards should always remain high. So let’s begin there, reviewing customer service standards.

• If you say it, do it: There’s noth-

ing that is going to send a customer running to your competition faster than a broken promise. You’ve spent a great deal of time developing a relationship of trust with your perspective customer.

Don’t blow it because you simply forget to do something. No matter how small you think it might be, if you tell your customer that you are going to do something, do it!

• Satisfy every customer: Every customer that you encounter immediate-

ly turns into a walking advertisement, good or bad, for your business. It is up to the salesperson to deliver the level of customer service that leads to a good advertisement. You are not going to be able to sell to every single customer that you come into contact with, but your level of customer service should never change.

• Keep your personal problems out of business: We all have personal problems, but they have no place at work.
