Alex Fischer to speak at Chamber luncheon Sept. 16 Alex Fischer, president and CEO of the Columbus Partnership will be the speaker for the Friday, Sept. 16, chamber luncheon at the Heritage Golf Club, 3525 Heritage Club Drive in Hilliard.

The Columbus Partnership, is a civic organization of Columbus, Ohio's top business leaders formed in 2002 to improve the economic and cultural base of Central Ohio.

Fischer has helped to spearhead the Columbus2020! Project, a comprehensive economic development strategy for the region to grow 180,000 net new jobs, increase personal in-

come by 40 percent, and make Columbus a top ten city in economic development in the nation.

Columbus2020! is focused on Alex Fischer four core pillars of economic development: 1. Retain and expand the companies and industries that call Central Ohio home today.

2. Attract major employers to establish operations in Central Ohio.

3. Create more commercial enterprises by leveraging the region’s research assets and entrepreneurs.

4. Improve the civic infrastructure and political conditions that enhance the economic development environment.

Hilliard Women in Business

Sept. 20 luncheon to feature Maj. Gen. Deborah A. Ashenhurst Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Deborah A. Ashenhurst will be the speaker for the Sept. 20 Hilliard Women in Business luncheon.

Maj. Gen. Ashenhurst assumed the post on Jan. 10, 2011, as the 81st Ohio adjutant general, Ohio’s first female adjutant general and the first female general officer for the Ohio National Guard.

She currently oversees the five brigades of the Ohio Army National Guard, four wings and eight geograph-

Hollyfest Scholarship

Auction scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4 The 29th Annual Hollyfest Scholarship Auction will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at the Makoy Center.

The Hollyfest Scholarship Foundation provides the largest local scholarships totaling $31,000, including an $8,000 scholarship payable over four years to three Hilliard graduates, one from each high school.

A one-time $2,000 scholarship is also provided to a student from each high school and a $1,000 grant is awarded to a Hilliard student who at-

Items are also needed for the silent auction. A variety of items are being sought — from electronics, tickets to performances or sporting events, jew-

elry, experiences, etc. Monetary donations can also be made and items will be purchased in the name of your business. All donors will be recognized in the evening’s program; on a card next to the auction item; in the Chamber newsletter; and in an ad in a local newspaper thanking donors.

A reverse raffle will also be part of the evening’s activities. It’s a fastpaced opportunity to walk away with some cash in your pocket right before the holidays.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available for special recognition, including a corporate table of 10 seats.

Chair’s perspective

Chair shares her thoughts on what makes Hilliard great “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow man.” — Herman Melville.

And, as Mr. Melville succinctly states, I submit that a thousand fibers connect us as a community. Each label that we carry — of “PTO president” or “township trustee” or “father and husband” — are interconnected to create what we can take a step back and see as “Hilliard.”

This town was recently named the recipient of a pretty cool award, by being recognized as one of Ohio’s best hometowns by Ohio Magazine.

I don’t know what the award judges looked for in making their determinations (I’m guessing it’s not the absence of orange barrels), but I know

what I think makes Hilliard great: • Strong neighborhood relationships: Neighbors pull together to help others in need without a second thought; neighbors create monthly dinner parties to spend time together and enjoy themselves (I’ve even heard of a neighborhood that

has an annual Olympics); neighbors band together to right a wrong. Good neighbors are a sign of a good community.

• Strong schools: A good school district is a mandatory component of a community.

Property values are maintained, HEATHER athletic teams provide a sense of pride, and businesses are atKECK tracted. Another exciting announcement for Hilliard this week — our district received an Excellent with Distinction ranking for the fourth year in a row.

• Strong business base: Successful businesses are good community partners. They provide

goods and services, contribute to local charities and initiatives and create jobs. We are lucky to have businesses that contribute so much to our community and one that comes to mind most often is Chick-fil-A on Hilliard-Rome Road. Tom Minturn, the former owner, is leaving Hilliard to move to West Virginia and get married. The entire community will miss his substantial involvement. Thanks, Tom, and good luck!

Two new businesses now open in Hilliard area We were excited to have two ribbon-cuttings ceremonies for two new local businesses.

Chamber board endorses Issue 7 At the August meeting of the board of directors for Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce, the members voted to endorse Issue 7, which would provide money to fund the Hilliard City School District for the next few years.

The board cited that one of the strengths of a strong business community is based on the strength of the schools. The Hilliard City Schools has achieved Excellent With Distinction for the fourth year in a row.

The board encourages everyone to become informed on the issue.

Hilliard Welfare Council gets new name The nonprofit Hilliard Welfare Council has changed its name to the Hilliard Community Assistance Council (HCAC).

The council's newly comprised six-member board felt the former name was outdated.

The organization will continue to operate the Hilliard Food

Pantry, utility-assistance program and a holiday program that provides children with gifts and families with groceries for a holiday meal in December.

However, the HCAC will broaden its assistance to people in the Hilliard City School District.

The organization also plans to increase its fundraising efforts and to secure a larger space for the pantry.

The HCAC also has a newly designed website, www.hcacoh.org and www.hilliardfoodpantry.com that can take online donations.

Taste of Hilliard & Business Expo a success The second annual Taste of Hilliard & Business Expo was held at the Makoy Center on Aug. 10.

Over 1,000 people attended and the feedback about the event from those who had booths and those who attended has been electric. We had door prizes from our vendors during the night’s festivities given out to the public and one lucky person was the winner of $150.
