Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce Business Monthly Chair’s Perspective
Graduates and our lifelong community
It is the season of Graduation ceremonies and celebrations. Congratulations to our high school and college seniors who will now embark on their next journey. As Chamber members, parents, and neighbors watching these graduates, have you thought about, as I have, “how many of them will return to our community?” The Mayor’s Administration and City Council have initiated the concept of Hilliard becoming a “Lifelong Community” and has set out to take steps toward having our young citizens return to our community. What can we, as Chamber of Commerce members, do to encourage these energetic, talented, spirited and goal-oriented young people to return to Hilliard? I don’t propose to have “the answers,” but I thought this is a great time to think about the “Lifelong Community” initiative. There is nothing that drives a community, its organizations, businesses and its government like a youthful perspective. I think that you will agree we have all learned from our children. We are a better rounded person because
we’ve learned from their perspectives, and as we grow and have grown from the combined experience of our living, and their fresh view on life. What can we as business owners TOM BAKER and professionals do to be an attractive vocational outlet for our young potential citizens? First, although it’s work, we need to embrace how to make the work experience rewarding and therefore enjoyable to come in and make a difference day in and day out. I believe The Chamber is one way to add this “enrichment factor” to our daily work, because we provide networking opportunities that enable members to form relationships. Our young graduates are looking for “jobs.” What we need to help them find are relationships. Jobs pay bills, relationships, like investments, pay dividends. These dividends are less about economics, and more about enriching your life through re-
warding work experiences, and these are found through people. The Chamber is people. The Chamber provides people with the opportunity to engage with other members in volunteer activities, and many of these activities support our community. If you are not a Chamber member, consider joining to build rewarding relationships for both yourselves and your employees. If you are a member, but have not become as involved as you might like, consider re-engaging and take a chance at building and enriching your relationships in the business community. If you are an active member, be a Chamber advocate to your employees, your friends and neighbors and make sure they know we would like to build relationships with them, letting them know they might find their “job” more rewarding as they build these relationships. I can think of nothing more attractive to a young person than to see our business community networking, building relationships, and yes, enjoying our “jobs.”
