Hilliard leaders support SB 297

Senator’s bill would help schools combat threats of violence By KEVIN CORVO THISWEEKNEWS.COM

A proposed law supported by Hilliard City Schools Superintendent John Marschhausen would allow Ohio districts to expel students who make credible threats of violence. “One of the best things about it is that it is permissive. ... It allows districts to choose their own paths. I’m relieved to see the permissive language,” said John Marschhausen, Marschhausen who at the invitation of state Sen. Jim Hughes (RColumbus) recently provided testimony in support of Senate Bill 297. Hughes, the primary sponsor of the bill, said it is in response to the increasing tide of student-made threats and acts of violence. He cited a recent shooting at a school prom in Wisconsin.

Antique TVs draw enthusiasts to Hilliard By KEVIN CORVO THISWEEKNEWS.COM If not for the late-model cars parked outside the Early Television Museum last weekend, some visitors to the facility might have looked around and pictured Dwight Eisenhower still in the White House.

The museum’s room of blackand-white televisions, picture tubes and cameras the size of a large suitcase, as well as the collectors bartering for their sale or trade, had a distinct mid-20th-century look and sound. About 125 early-television enthusiasts from across the United

States – and two from Europe – spent April 29 through May 1 buying, selling and learning more about the early years of television during the museum’s 13th annual convention. Steve McVoy, 73, opened the

HOSA taking steps to alleviate traffic issues at soccer fields By KEVIN CORVO THISWEEKNEWS.COM Hilliard Ohio Soccer Association officials say they are confident severe traffic backups that occurred two weeks ago were an anomaly, but they remain focused on finding a solution to prevent a similar problem in the future.

“Make no mistake about it, the traffic issues that occurred (April 20) at the soccer complex are wholly unacceptable,” Dwight Burgess, director of operations for HOSA, wrote in a recent email to HOSA families. The email was in response to the backlash – some of it personal and containing profanity, according to the

email – directed at Burgess for the traffic jam that occurred in the complex’s parking lot April 20. Eight days after the incident, Burgess said it was unlike any other that had ever occurred and it was determined to be the result of a confluence of events not likely to occur again. “We’ve never had such a situation

like that and like many problems, we found that it stemmed from not one but a multitude of circumstances,” Burgess said. Burgess communicated those reasons in a followup email to HOSA families and later to ThisWeek. A car accident on Scioto Darby Road on the evening of April 20
