The Most Gardens

Year after year, guests of the Spring Home & Garden Show are wowed by the themed gardens designed by members of the Columbus Landscape Association. Recent years saw gardens based on children’s storybooks, the movies and iconic world cities, just to name a few.

This year, the gardens will be tied together by the people helping to make them come to life: local artists whose talent knows no bounds.

All told, these 10 “gARTens” — a collaboration between the CLA and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, will encompass a variety of forms and ideas, including performance art, fashion and repurposed materials.

“We were delighted when the Dispatch approached us about having artists collaborate with their landscape partners to create really unique artthemed gardens for this year’s show,” said Greater Columbus Arts Council VP Marketing Jami Goldstein.

“Several of our Art Makes Columbus featured artists are participating and incorporating fashion, urban art and performance in a way that we think people will find very inspiring and fun. And all of the collaborations are going to result in something new and different for people to consider when they look at their outdoor spaces.”

Sometimes it’s better to go beyond Google or Siri and ask questions of home and garden industry professionals live and in person. Well, start making a list because there will be hundreds upon hundreds of experts covering every conceivable specialty at the Home & Garden Show.

Included among them, of course, are the many businesses, services, craftsmen and pros from around the city, state and region who will be on hand and exhibiting in the Show’s two buildings.

There are also numerous how-to and DIY presentations and seminars scheduled so you can take a deeper dive into topics that interest you. Among the folks sharing their expertise are members of The

Ohio State University Master Gardeners Program, who will be on hand to answer your toughest gardening questions and staff the Edible Garden. There will also be two stages with non-stop activity during the Home & Garden Show’s eight days.

‘This Old House’ stands the test of time

Installing modern upgrades, similar to those in a “Net Zero House,” to an antique charmer continues to propel the show’s success forward and is also a theory highly supported by those involved on the show.

“Something about an old house always wins with me,” said Trethewey. “They have a story; they need a new steward, and they often have deeper character.”

Much like the show’s premise, “This Old House” has proven to synonymize age with quality. For decades, this Emmy-winning PBS home improvement and remodeling show has had viewers glued.

Now in its 40th anniversary season, tradesmen and contractor experts Tom Silva and Richard Trethewey have naturally coaxed homeowners to see the magic and value of renovating and uplifting classic homes to energy-efficient, aesthetically jaw-dropping beauties.

It was 1979 when Trethewey’s father and uncle, owners of a successful plumbing business were contacted by the local PBS station. The show’s creators, still at the drawing board, sought out the expertise of the Trethewey brothers to enhance their new home improvement show. The brothers dove in for little, if any, compensation.

“For some happy, inexplicable rea-

son, my dad agreed,” said Richard Trethewey — now succeeding as the fourth generation of the family business. “The rest is history.”

The show has also been a large part of Silva’s professional life, having joined “This Old House” the late 1980s. In an impressive balance, Silva not only bolsters the show, but coowns Silva Brothers Construction out of Lexington, Mass. — yet another long-standing family-run business.

Undeniably, home improvement shows are now trending as a dominating force on television; however, “This Old House” keeps up in ratings, and has arguably paved the way for the genre’s influx of similar shows and networks. “’This Old House’ is the original. It was all new territory,” explained Trethewey. “We are real contractors sharing first-hand experience of our profession. We aren’t actors. There are no cue cards. We are lucky enough to be teachers with a bigger classroom than most.”

Life is better in a tree

By Michele Mooney Pete Nelson, known to many as the Tree Whisperer and Treehouse Master (his moniker from his show on Animal Planet), discovered his passion at the age of 5, when he helped his father build a treehouse in their New Jersey backyard.

During his teen years, he spent “endless” hours drawing treehouses with the dream of eventually building them. Now, decades later, Nelson admits that he still dreams about treehouses and is often awake at night drawing the treehouses he imagines.

It is no surprise that Nelson, who majored in economics in college and began his professional career as a homebuilder, ended up taking the “leap to the trees” and founded Nelson Treehouse Supply in Washington state that designs and builds custom treehouses.

Treehouse Masters is now in its 11th season on Animal Planet and although all of the 100-plus treehouses that he and his team created and

built are memorable, there are a few in particular that especially stand out for Nelson — whether it be for sentimental reasons or challenges that were met.

“Our friend and longtime cameraman, Steve Bowler, decided to leave showbiz to run Treehouse Village Inn in Vermont and asked us to build a luxury treetop rental,” said Nelson.

Nelson and his team created “The Willow Treehouse” a 600-foot, A-frame design with full bathroom, kitchenette, living room, propane fireplace, queen bed, and reading nook and porch. The treehouse was featured in the final episode of season 11.

One of the more challenging treehouse requests that Nelson received actually came from his daughter, Emily, and her husband, Patrick. The couple asked him to relocate the Bird Blind, one of the original treehouses at TreeHouse Point (the Nelsons’ event and overnight retreat center in Washington), to their own backyard.

It was really tricky, but worth it to preserve the legacy of that sweet treehouse.”

The treehouses created by Nelson and his crew are often luxurious, breath-taking and can range upwards of $300,000. When watching Treehouse Masters, it is easy to understand why Grace Vanderwaal, winner of America’s Got Talent, told People magazine that she would use some of her $1 million prize money to have a treehouse built by Nelson.

Nelson and his team created two adjoining treehouses for Vanderwaal — a “Boho Hangout” for fun and relaxation and the other, a “1980s style, Ultra Poppy Arts Studio” for songwriting and practicing her ukulele.

Nelson’s mind never stops working

and he never stops exploring. During his visit to Columbus a few years ago for the Home & Garden Show, he discovered the work of Doug Morgan of Mount Vernon Barn Co. and DIY Network’s “Barn Sweet Barn.”

“Mount Vernon Barn Co. immediately stood out because Doug sells the stuff I love integrating into our treehouses: beautiful reclaimed barn wood,” said Nelson. “We have used Mount Vernon Barn’s wood in many recent projects, including a couple of treehouses at Treehouse Utopia, my new retreat in Texas Hill Country.”

With endless ideas and energy, Nelson and his “amazing wife” Judy are embarking on two new ventures — the Treehouse Resort & Spa in Washington, whose initial plans call for 25 treehouses and as many cottages; and — especially exciting for the Nelsons — their new role as grandparents.

By Sarah Irvin Clark Eric Litwin is passionate about getting children to “read with joy” at a young age.

As a teacher and a kid who struggled with learning to read, the bestselling author of the original four “Pete the Cat” books, “The Nuts” and “Groovy Joe,” knows that the single most important predictor of school success is reading.

“We can beat iPads. In fact, we have to beat iPads,” Litwin said in a recent phone interview. “Engagement is the key to making reading more fun than iPads. The more fun and interactivity you have with books, the more kids will learn to read.”

So far, kids and families all over the world are embracing Litwin’s literacy message. Litwin’s books have sold more than 13 million copies, been translated into 17 languages, and won 26 literacy awards including a Theodor Geisel Seuss Honor Award.

What moved you to focus on early childhood literacy?

Litwin: When I was a teacher, one day I was walking down the hall and walked by the kindergarten classroom.

The teacher said “Who wants to read?” and the whole classroom erupted in excitement. One little girl ran to the bookshelf and picked up a book and just held it like a baby. When I got to my third-grade class, I asked them if they’d like to read and they weren’t as excited. That got me to thinking “What happened between kindergarten and third grade that so many kids stopped loving reading?”

What do you think happens that makes kids not as excited to read as they get older?

Litwin: Interactivity is a big part.

There are three things a child needs: 1. Reading and language foundation.

Unfortunately, electronic devices and overall family “busy-ness” get in the way. Additionally, poverty is associated with lack of access to books. 2.

Litwin will perform Monday at 1 and 3 p.m. at the Dispatch Home & Garden Show.

Fun, meaningful and self-selected reading. Incredible things happen when reading joyfully. 3. Direct instruction that is child-focused.

Every child learns differently and many schools buy reading programs with a formula that isn’t tailored to each child.

What is your next project?

Litwin: I’m working on a book that’s for parents, teachers and reading volunteers that takes complicated theories and ideas and makes them simple. Learning to read is complicated, but not confusing — it’s like making pancakes. There are reading ingre-

dients — like words, understanding of punctuation and pronunciation. I’m basically taking theoretical ideas like emergent reading theory and boiling it down to pancakes.

You were at the Dispatch Home & Garden Show last year. Tell us what you have planned for this year.

Litwin: The shows are going to be fun — we will sing, dance and read together. The performances inspire children to read and love books. Last year, I loved looking at the gardens and enjoyed watching the children and families enjoy the gardens, as well. I’m delighted to come back.

Landscapers join local artists to create living masterpieces presented

Having spring just around the corner serves as a reminder that the color and warmth that gardens provide will be returning to a neighborhood near you.

At this year’s Dispatch Spring Home & Garden Show taking place this Saturday through Feb. 24 at the Ohio Expo Center, there will be plen-

ty to see for those who have a flare for the artistic as well.

The theme of this year’s show is “gARTens,” with local landscapers teaming with local artists to design displays that they hope add to the excitement and imagination for anyone wishing to create their own gardens this year.

9 Trees Landscape Construction Five Seasons Landscape Management In collaboration with Reclaimed Sticks Hockey lovers should be sure to check out the Outdoor Bar in a Reclaimed gARTen created by 9 Trees Landscape Construction.

Established in 2002, 9 Trees focuses on hardscape construction with a background in horticulture that includes fertilizing and mowing to outdoor kitchen retaining walls, driveways, lighting, planting and even snow removal.

Reclaimed Sticks takes broken hockey sticks and recycled aluminum that are on their way to landfill and turns them into pieces of artwork and furniture.

Owned by David Hoening, Reclaimed Sticks will team with 9 Trees to create a garden that highlights three access pathways with an outdoor bar under a shingled roof pavilion, which will have TVs and sports-themed memorabilia.

Hoening and Matt Forchione, president of 9 Trees, are hopeful that the timing of the show coinciding with the NHL season, will attract the growing hockey community.

“Putting this display together is identical to building in real life,” Forchione said. “We design a space on paper that will fit the client’s needs, verify the material quantities and build it. In the garden display, we go the extra step of adding decorations to make it feel warm, inviting, cozy and something client prospects can visualize themselves using.”

In collaboration with Sarah DeAngulo Hout A woodland theme will be prevalent in the display

by Five Seasons Landscape Management.

One of the key aspects to represent that, according to artist Sarah DeAngulo Hout, is having “lots and lots of moss.”

“From an artist’s standpoint, I want to incorporate both form and function,” said Hout, of Sarahthehout: Creative Endeavors. “I want my pieces to challenge the viewer into thinking of beauty in an outside-of-the-box kind of way, helping them realize that something beautiful can also functionally work in their own little landscaped paradises. ” Mike Moulton is the landscape designer for Five Seasons and is designing the display they’re calling “Old Man’s Cave.”

The garden will feature a wood pergola with al fresco paintings and a woodburning fireplace with a stone finish. There will also be a stone back wall with pillars and two water spillways. Flanking the pillars will be three murals where painted surfaces and growing plant-material will be infused into the artwork.

Plant material will include selections native to Ohio such as azaleas, hydrangea, ninebark, pine, birch, cherry, hemlock and redbud. The garden also will have natural stone borders and a natural stonewater feature at the front of the display.

In collaboration with the Ohio State University Marching Band Ohio State football fans will be able to get their fix at the Home & Garden Show with “The Best Darn Garden in the Land” that will be produced by Landscape Design Solutions.

In addition to the thousands of flowers on display, this will be what Landscape Design Solutions owner and designer Jacob Basnett calls a “sound garden” that incorporates the sights and sounds of The Ohio State University marching band.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is that the OSU marching band is as artistic as anybody else,” Basnett said. “A big thing a lot of people don’t realize is how innovative they are. We considered a couple different artists and we reached out the Ohio State marching band. You have to have Script Ohio, and that will be done out of flowers.

It’ll be pretty substantial. We’ll have a musical component in the garden creating that sound, permeating the area. We’re going to try to have an educational side of what OSU does.”

According to Basnett, who collaborated with Ohio State marching band director of marketing and communications Kevin Leonardi on the project, the display at the Home & Garden show will include birds as well as a memorabilia bar.

“For the most part, the garden is a sound garden,” Basnett said. “There will be components of how people can understand how sound can be brought into a garden.”

Capturing one aspect of the city that is sometimes gets overlooked is the theme of Oakland Nurseries’ garden known as “City Dwellers.”

On display will be an alley that includes figurines of animals such as squirrels, ducks, frogs, foxes and deer. In addition, there will be a casual sitting area enclosed by ornate living walls and an ornate wooden trellis.

“We’re going to have an urban garden,” said Bryan Joyce from Oakland Nurseries. “There will be a portrait of an alley so that it draws your eye down into the garden, and there will be some figurines. It’ll be a typical alleyway scene and give a chance to get close to the environment. Humans and animals can coexist through the urban environment. Of course it’s going to have a whole bunch of trees and a pretty cool water feature that takes water off the roofs and flows down in the grate that you see in the alley. It should be kind of cool.”

Oakland Nurseries is teaming with Stephanie Rond, a Columbus-based street artist who is designing the figurines for the garden.

“I’m super stoked for this collaboration,” Rond said. “It’s been fun to explore how the city is a habitat for wildlife and to celebrate their part in a city life experience. Oakland Nurseries has been an absolute dream to work with because they’re so open to new ideas and are very creative themselves.”

The “challenge,” as Nick Besser calls it, of combining beautiful music and a beautiful landscape was the inspiration for a Performance gARTen that will be presented by Riepenhoff Landscape Ltd. Molly Winters is a singer and songwriter from Columbus who will be performing solo on Sunday and with her band, The Salty Caramels, on Feb. 23.

“Upon listening to a few songs, we knew instantly that we had found our partner,” Besser said.

“Inspired by the classic town square bandstand, we chose to design a space that functioned both as a performance area and a sitting and gathering space.”

“We thought of having a musical performance area in the garden that invites passersby into the landscape,” Winters said. “We hope to have musical themes throughout the garden as well. Music and nature go hand-and-hand, and a peaceful garden is often the perfect place for me to sing and play guitar. I’m providing the sound system and setting it up early so we can blend it into the garden theme and put some greenery around it.”

Throughout the garden, music has been incorporated into the design, including a lower-level patio with a boulder wall on the backside. There will be wooden stands supporting a musical staff banner as a background for the patio, which doubles as a stage. Wooden arbors anchor the walkway at each end, and inside the garden will be colorful shrubs and perennials with rhododendrons, azaleas and other plants.

Combining landscape architecture and fashion is the theme of Fashion through the Garden by Hedge Landscape.

According to Steven Maravich, landscape architect for Hedge, collaboration “is an important part of our culture, and by intersecting fashion and landscape architecture we can explore different perspectives.”

Designed in a minimalist context, the garden will feature elements such as stone, water, space and light to set the stage for the art of Celeste Malvar-Stewart, a local textiles and fashion designer who uses wool, alpaca and mohair from Ohio fiber farms along with natural dyes.

The garden will feature hand-felted and naturally dyed wearable art pieces to complement the landscape. Malvar-Stewart has been involved in the fashion industry for more than 30 years, creating unconventional wearables, accessories and interior wear.

“Our idea came about quite organically,” Malvar-Stewart said. “With (Maravich’s) expertise in landscape architecture and my work in textiles and fashion, it seemed perfect to fuse the two areas,” she said. “We were inspired by our common consideration for sustainable design, combining our two distinct disciplines to create an environment that has a beautiful, rich and organic flow while mindfully using eco-friendly approaches.”

When Roger Seely Jr. was growing up, he and his family often traveled to places such as Gatlinburg, Tenn., and visited the Great Smoky Mountains.

That’s the inspiration for the garden that will be displayed by Seely’s Landscape Nursery titled “Smoky Mountain Wood Carvings” and will feature the artistry of wood chain saw carver Ben Williams.

“One of our designers knew of an artist who created wood carvings from logs with a chain saw,” Seely said.

“I liked his work, and it reminded me of similar art work that I’ve seen in the Smoky Mountains. Many of the carvings Ben had done in the past were of wildlife that one would find in the Smoky Mountains such as bears, wolves, eagles and river trout. When I was younger, my family would go see all the old historic sites. Many of the cabins and shops around the area had many similar carvings.”

Seely said the garden will contain mossy boulders lining a cobblestone pathway, which leads to an upper patio area in front of a wooden cabin. There will be flowering cherries, spring bulbs, hosta, and rhododendron along spruce and birch trees. Placed throughout the garden will be carved animals created by Williams.

“We like to showcase the variety of plants we use,” Seely Jr. said. “This is one thing that sets us apart from other landscape companies is that our nursery has a wide selection of new and unusual plants that we get from all over the country.”

Shearer Patio & Landscape Services In collaboration with Gretel Adams With The Flower Encounter, Shearer Patio & Landscape Services, which is teaming up with Sunny Meadows Flower Farm, views flowers as the star of a garden inspired by nature.

“When Shearer learned that we needed an artist for our garden this year, I suggested Sunny Meadows Flower Farm,” said Angie Mounts, office manager for Shearer who also works for Sunny Meadows. “Sunny Meadows is a cut flower farm that also creates beautiful floral installations.

“We gathered inspiration from Sunny Meadows’ previous floral works and then discussed what else unique could be created. We knew we wanted to have an open-air wooden beam structure with a fireplace with a water feature on each side as the anchor of the garden,” Mounts said.

Other floral elements from Sunny Meadows include a large chandelier, which features flowers and crystals, several floating clouds, a stack of wood covered with moss and flowers and a curtain of flowers hanging from wooden arbors.

There also will be butterfly bushes in the garden to help make the connection between insects and plants.

Among the flowers will be purple magnolias, yellow forsythia, hot pink rhododendrons, blue spruce, pink weeping cherry, perennials and bulbs.

Having a modern look will be the focus of Art Springing Into Bloom, Warwick’s Landscaping’s garden this year.

The company, which has participated in every Home & Garden Show since 1986, will feature contemporary design with the sound of water flowing over a fountain and varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials.

“I wanted to have something with more modern art,” said Terry Killilea, owner and designer of Warwick’s Landscaping. “I saw a few pictures and knew it would be different and would catch people’s eye. I’m putting in a fountain that I’m making to be real modern-looking.”

Jesse Getic is the artist for the project, which will feature weeping Japanese maples, variegated red twig dogwoods, clump river birch, knockout roses, weeping pussy willows, bright-colored tulips and sweet-smelling hyacinths.

Killilea learned about Getic because of a project Getic had worked on at deMonye’s Greenhouse. Among Getic’s many works are paintings of landscapes on canvas. “(Being at the Home & Garden Show) helps the business and people get a taste of what you can do,” Killilea said. “It gives you a point of contact and always turns into leads. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.”

Noticing what could be overlooked will be what Wood Landscape Services’ garden, titled Repurposeful, will focus on.

The company’s display will use recycled materials from its production facility to incorporate the garden design, specifically the use of “drop,” which is the negative space of material left from cutting shapes on a laser-cutting machine.

According to Tina Castorano, who is designing the garden, “collaboration was the key” as she met with and Sandra Ulibarri from Kobolt Studios.

“We had an overall look envisioned for the space,” Castorano said. “The artists ran with our thoughts and creatively brought an idea into three dimensions. The inspiration behind our sculptural pieces is to encourage the viewer to take a second look. What would typically be discarded material has been artfully arranged into impactful design elements in our garden.”

Kobolt uses “classic techniques alongside high-tech machines to create art and environments worldwide” said Jerry Ulibarri. “Our process starts with brainstorming and design. We sketch out a rough idea. Then our designers can create a (two-dimensional) model from which our artists will reference through the entire build. We’d like people to see this piece as art rather than waste and to realize that sometimes what you might throw away can be repurposed into something that’s enjoyable to look at.”

The Greater Columbus Arts Council, Columbus Arts Festival and Columbus Makes Art have partnered with the 2019 Dispatch Home & Garden show to bring you a unique art-filled home and garden experience and special discounts.

Designing homes with four-legged friends in mind

By Kevin Corvo Dispatch Media Group For some people pets are like children and like any good parent they want a pet-friendly home.

Pet-lovers can get a leg up on making a petfriendly home at the 2019 Columbus Dispatch Spring Home and Garden Show this Saturday through Feb. 24 at the Ohio Expo Center.

PetPeople is the sponsor of the home feature at this year’s Spring Show and will showcase a petfriendly home.

“There are many things you can do to make a home pet-friendly and you can find out about many of these at the show,” said Terri Montigny, manager of community relations and marketing for Worthington-based PetPeople, with 58 stores in six states.

The 12-by-28-foot pet-friendly home will illustrate what accoutrements that can be built into living rooms that are both safe and convenient for pets and their owners.

Constructed by Beachy Barns, its interior includes a dog-washing station, a cat-climbing wall and space-conserving furniture.

“The living room is set up to give homeowners a few ideas,” said Bryan Hamilton, owner of Hamilton Contractors, the company that is furnishing the

pet-friendly home.

The living room includes a dog-washing station built into a laundry room, a custom-made gate to safely contain a puppy and a dog cage that doubles as a television stand.

The latter is a space saver in which a family’s television can rest on a countertop built upon a dog cage, Hamilton said.

“It’s an idea to allow a homeowner to gain back some space needed for animals and family-living.”

“There are quite a few options for what you can do in your home,” Hamilton said.

Another space-saving tip is food-and-water stations that can slide under countertops, freeing up floor space as well as allowing for cleaner floor surfaces, Montigny said.

Creative Earthscapes is providing the landscaping that complements the pet-friendly home.

In addition to viewing the pet-friendly home, patrons can learn about other steps to make the

remainder of the home, inside and outside, more pet friendly, Montigny said.

One critical step is to make sure there are no plants in the household or backyard that are poisonous to pets and within their environment, Montigny said.

While reaction to exposure might vary slightly, there are several plant varieties that are generally poisonous to dogs and cats, including azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips and crocuses, Montigny said.

“Dogs are a little like children” and while the curiosity of dogs and cats and their penchant to gnaw or eat non-food items can vary, “it’s important to dog-proof inside and outside,” Montigny said.

A suggestion for cats, of which it can be said are generally more curious that dogs, is building a screened area in a backyard where cats can experience exploring outside yet in a controlled environment, Montigny said.

“It’s healthier for cats,” and provides an outdoor experience without them being exposed to potential outdoor threats such as encounters with other animals, Montigny said.

Patrons can also get advice on diets for their pets and learn about other pet-friendly steps not as widely known.

Garden author to spotlight well-loved Ohio plants

By Steve Stephens Dispatch Media Group Well-loved Ohio plants will get the VIP treatment from gardening VIP Melinda Myers at the 63rd annual Dispatch Spring Home & Garden Show at the Ohio Expo Center.

Myers, a popular garden writer and TV and radio host, will offer visitors an in-depth look at plants that Buckeye gardeners should and do adore during an appearance this Sunday. (She’ll give a second presentation, about gardening to attract pollinators, the same day.)

“I’m so happy to be coming back to Columbus,” said Myers, who received her undergraduate degree in horticulture from Ohio State University and now lives in Wisconsin.

“It’s always great for me to come back home.”

Myers, 61, is the author of more than 20 gardening books including “The Midwest Gardener’s Handbook” and “The Ohio Lawn Guide” and is a member of the Garden Writers of America Hall of Fame.

She is also the host of the nationally syndicated “Melinda’s Garden Moment” segments, which appear on radio and television across the country, including WOSU-TV (Channel 34).

Myers is well-known by gardeners

throughout the country, said Mike Hogan, an extension educator and associate professor at Ohio State.

“A lot of people have really good gardening expertise, but may not excel at connecting with people,” Hogan said.

But Myers is a terrific communicator, he said, and noted that she is a popular speaker at some of the biggest and most prestigious garden and horticulture events in the county.

Getting to hear and meet her is “an incredible opportunity for central Ohio gardeners,” Hogan said.

Myers also writes a column for Birds & Blooms magazine, answering gardening questions from readers.

“Melinda is the best,” said Kirsten Sweet, deputy editor of the magazine.

The column “is one of the best-read departments in Birds & Bloom,” Sweet said.

“Everybody gets to learn something from Melinda’s answers.”

Albert, who portrayed city-slicker and wannabe farmer Oliver Wendell Douglas on the TV comedy “Green Acres” (1965-71) was as passionate about plants as his sitcom counterpart, Myers recalled.

The actor “actually grew 18-foothigh corn in Pasadena,” Myers said.

“He was very proud of that.”

Myers’ Home & Garden Show presentation on pollinators will examine the role of birds, bees and butterflies in the garden and what gardeners can do to attract them.

“We all depend on those pollinators,” Myers said.

“As gardeners we’re in tune with role they play and we’re always looking for even more opportunities to create great habitats.”

Her presentation on well-loved plants will feature native Ohio species as well as easy maintenance plants that grow well in the Buckeye State.

“Melinda is from Ohio and really understands Ohio gardening,” Hogan said.

“This is an incredible opportunity for central Ohio gardeners” who come to see her.”

Master gardeners add vegetables to the mix

And Myers, said Sweet, is also “very likeable and very relatable.”

“I’ve seen her do several shows at the Wisconsin State Fair and afterward people literally line up to talk to her,” Sweet said.

“And she takes the time to talk with every single person. She genuinely cares and genuinely wants to help people with their lawns and gardens.”

For Myers, connecting with people is a cherished opportunity.

“One of the things I love about traveling is speaking to gardeners around the country,” Myers said.

“I love science and its application to gardening but I love people, too,” she said.

“I was lucky to combine all my passions into something I enjoy.”

After her presentations Myers always looks forward to meeting gardeners who have questions, she said.

“Even if I’ve answered a question 100 times, it’s the first time that person has asked that question. And I always walk away with some new bit of information, myself.”

Although gardening is about plants, it’s also about the gardeners who plant those plants, Myers said.

“Your garden should be fun and reflect your personality,” she said, a lesson she shared while filming “Yardworks,” a nationally syndicated TV

For those trying to take their garden to the next level, Ohio State University’s Master Gardeners will be ready to help at the 2019 Spring Home & Garden Show.

Mike Hogan, who leads the program for Ohio State, said the gardeners noticed a hole in the event’s past offerings, and have prepared accordingly this year.

“None of the gardens had actual food,” he said.

“So the Master Gardeners said, ‘Can we do something with food?’”

That question led to a plan to put together an onstage vegetable garden set up so that guests can walk through and learn about growing food rather than flowers or other aesthetic plants.

“The idea is to show people how they can grow

vegetables at home — some in small spaces and some in larger spaces,” Hogan said.

While walking through the garden, guests will be able to ask Master Gardeners questions. The masters will be walking around ready to answer any questions, and will give demonstrations and specific answers on “a bunch of different types of plantings.”

The hands-on approach is a bit of a new one, and Hogan said he’s excited for it.

“There will be no shortage of people to get help from at the show,” he said. “So we’ve sort of flipped the show from being somewhat static to really being interactive.”

The Master Gardeners are ready to answer plenty of other questions as well.

The popular Master Gardener booth will return this year, and will be ready to answer virtually anything “from roses to compost piles to grass and edible gardens,” according to Hogan.

At the booth, Master Gardeners can use their own experience to answer questions or use a laptop to look up ultra-specific questions that guests may have.

Hogan said they can be as specific as searching the kind of bug gardeners have seen on their tomatoes.

The booth is always a major draw, and Hogan said the masters enjoy it as well. “It’s just a really nice way for Master Gardeners to be able to interact with the public and do some education,” he said. “It’s really catered to whatever specific need and question the show-goers have.”

Circa Plants Brandon and Alyssa Burns, owners of Circa Plants, started growing, collecting, and packaging seeds in 1999 with a focus on heirloom, open-pollinated varieties from Ohio.

“The best part about running the business is being able to be a part of helping gardeners successfully grow plants from seed. The personal contact at the Home and Garden Show gives us a great opportunity to answer questions and help gardeners find seeds that will work for them,” Alyssa Burns said.

The company specializes in hard-to-find varieties. “Customers often are able to find flowers or vegetables that they’ve been trying to find for years. We have also had the privilege of being given seeds for family heirlooms that we are then able to grow and put into production,” Burns said.

Circa Plant’s seeds are available on their company website and at shows like the Home and Garden Show. They will have more than 250 varieties at the show this year.

“We have participated in the show since 2010 and it is an amazing event,” Burns said. “We look forward to it every year and it is a great kick-off for our spring season.” circaplants.com

The Columbus Dispatch is looking for a new batch of green-thumbed central Ohio residents for its secondyear gardening event.

The Backyard Garden Awards launched in 2018 as a way to put the spotlight on local gardeners.

In the event’s first year, winners took home awards for community gardens, container gardens, landscapes, native plant gardens, perennial gardens and vegetable gardens, along with a grand prize and people’s choice winners.

Ohio State University Master Gardeners judged the submitted photos of gardens and landscapes for the con-

test. Mike Hogan, associate professor at Ohio State who heads up the Master Gardeners program, said judges were “blown away” by the number and quality of entries they received.

“It became obvious that there are a lot of gardeners in central Ohio who place a value on not just the beauty and aesthetics of gardens and green space, but on the valuable ecosystem benefits which gardens provide,” Hogan said. “We expect that many more gardeners will participate by entering their garden spaces in the awards program during this coming gardening season.”

Becky Kover, editor of the At Home section of the Dispatch, helped review the entries, and said she was “overwhelmed” by the response.

“The quality of the gardens was impressive,” she said. “It’s obvious that central Ohioans are proud of their hard work, and they should be.”

The event is sponsored by Oakland Nurseries, and Vice President Mark Reiner said the company feels it’s “important to support the people who support us and the people who like to get outside and work in the dirt.”

“We find it exciting to support people who take pride in their gardens and their landscapes and their outdoor space,” he said. “Those are our people, so we want to be well-repre-

sented in that space.”

Jill Ladrick, with the help of her husband Ray, won the coveted grand prize at the 2018 Backyard Garden Awards for her impressive perennial garden in Pickerington.

She said she never anticipated winning, but knew her garden could impress.

“Knowing that there were hundreds of entries I thought, ‘I’m just going to throw my chances out there in the wind and see what happens,’” she said. “I was shocked.”

Paula Penn-Nabrit thought the same when she submitted her community garden for the contest at the behest of her mother.

At Columbus’ Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Penn-Nabrit put together a 4,000-square-foot organic and self-staining garden with the help of her congregation. She submitted some photos for the contest, but never anticipated winning. She said she was “absolutely floored” when she heard the news.

“I did not think there was any possibility whatsoever that it would be selected,” she said with a laugh.

Mike Rosati expresses a sense of humility and pride when discussing his windows.

The founder and CEO of Rosati Windows is confident that when people shop around, many ultimately will choose his products.

“A lot of it has to do with quality,” Rosati said.

His company, which includes a manufacturing facility, is located in a nearly 60,000-square-foot building at 4200 Roberts Road.

“It allows us to put a lot more into the window,” Rosati said. “We compete in the marketplace at or below market prices.”

Rosati Windows has a sales force, service department and installers, all designed to make the experience enjoyable and less stressful, Rosati said.

The company offers free estimates and does no door-to-door sales or telemarketing.

He even encourages people to comparison shop at other stores and on the internet.

“We’re not the old blue-suede shoe guys,” he said. “We don’t do high-pressure sales. It’s not allowed in my company. We don’t write prices on the back of a business card.”

While other companies throw around random figures in energy savings with new windows, Rosati considers himself more conservative. There are a variety of factors to consider, such as the health of the furnace, insulation and how many kids are running in and out the house, he said.

“There’s no question there is payback,” he said. “There is no question it

will save you money.”

Founded almost 20 years ago, the company manufactures dozens of styles, including bay windows, circle tops, casements and sliders.

“If there’s a window out there it’s likely we make it,” said Rosati, a Columbus native and former butcher who’s been in the window business for 35 years.

Rosati said he realizes new windows are a major purchase but they factor into the overall price of the property.

“It’s an investment in the home,” he said. “We have found that in the real-estate market, people are looking at windows. We are seeing MLS (multiple listing service) listings with Rosati Windows on them. And that’s pretty cool.”

For those seeking new windows, Rosati offers a few tips.

“We want to make sure on vinyl windows the corners are welded, not screwed together,” he said. “We insist on metal reinforcements. You want to do your homework.”

Many customers these days are leaning toward colorful frames, and Rosati Windows is more than happy to oblige. They can choose from more than 200 colors on file or bring a swatch in of their preferred hue, Rosati said.

“It used to be white and beige and that was it,” he said. “If it wasn’t white or beige, we couldn’t help you.”

For wood-staining, Rosati has more than 25 different shades that are done at the factory, eliminating the smell and intrusion into a customer’s house, he said.

Rosati said there have been many advances made in windows, such as triple-paned glass filled with krypton gas for efficiency. There are even soundproof windows with laminated glass to tamp down exterior noise.

“It’s not going to cut it all out but it will diminish the sounds,” he said.

“It’s amazing,” he added. “Windows sound boring as heck but it’s amazing.

When submitting photos, Ladrick suggested taking the time to take quality shots. “It’s tough to take photographs that make a landscape come alive,” she said. “You really have to

have the right angles and the right lighting in order to make that photograph pop.”

But even for amateurs, Reiner said all entries are welcome. “We hope people aren’t intimidated by the process,” he said. “Even if they aren’t sure if they’re going to win and they’re not a professional, they’re still encouraged to participate.”

Patrons of the Columbus Dispatch Home and Garden Show, running Saturday through Feb. 24 at the Ohio Expo Center, can enjoy sampling bestof-show desserts from last year’s Ohio State Fair and tips on how to recreate the delectable desserts in their own kitchens.

Several blue ribbon and best-ofshow winners from the Culinary Arts Competition at the 2018 Ohio State Fair will be at the spring Home & Garden Show to participate in the “Taste of Ohio State Fair Blue Ribbon Winners” event.

Participants will demonstrate how they created their award-winning dishes and bring samples, said Sandy Libertini, arts director for the Ohio State Fair.

The participants include Janet Gill of Canton and Vicki Chisholm of Copley, both of northeastern Ohio.

“I’ve been baking since I was about 12 years old,” said Gill, who will showcase her best-of-show spiced honey carrot cake.

As an adult, Gill she said continued baking and cooking for her family but after becoming an empty-nester began turning a hobby into a challenge.

Gill began entering her culinary creations about 10 years ago at the Stark County Fair and credits the input of judges there will honing her skills.

“I think I learned from the judges and with their feedback became an even better baker,” said Gill, who also competed in the Pillsbury Bake-Off in Las Vegas, Calif., in 2013.

Gill has been competing in the culinary arts at the Ohio State Fair for about the past five years.

The award-winning carrot cake was made specifically for last year’s contest, Gill said.

“I found a recipe and tweaked it a

little to make my own,” Gill said.

Chisholm won best-of-show last year for her Decadent Chocolate Layer Cake with Strawberry Sauce and grand champion for Italian Macaroons.

Chisholm said she changed-up her traditional recipe by adding brown sugar, a requirement of the contest, and also sea salt and Ganache to “make her own concoction.”

“I just enjoy being in the kitchen,” she said.

Chisholm and Gill and other participants will bring samples of their award-winning creations for patrons to try, discuss how they created it and bring completed desserts that one lucky winner can take home.

Muralists capture Midwest scenes

By Andrew King Dispatch Media Group In the midst of the plant life on hand at the 2019 Spring Home & Garden Show, a group of artists will provide a plant-based splash of art.

Local artist Sarah DeAngulo Hout is curating a five-piece mural project for the show based on the theme of “Midwest Flora.” The five 4-by-8-foot murals will hang from the ceiling at the show.

Guests can purchase these original works from the artists at the show.

Hout said she wanted to keep the theme topical, but also allow it to be broad enough to get interesting perspectives and tweaks on the idea.

With the five chosen murals, she said that’s exactly what she achieved.

“The artists have created designs that are either based in Ohio or the Midwest area,” she said. “I have one artist that incorporated a farm – a typical Ohio scene – and then another artist who’s depicting a whole bunch of flowers and plants that are poisonous. So she’s coming at it from another angle.”

In reviewing the potential works, Hout said she wanted works that would make show-goers say, “this is different,” and find murals that had a message to go

along with their visual appeal.

“I was looking for an interesting concept and I was looking for someone who could talk about their art,” she said. “So not only an interesting concept, but a great description. I was looking for different styles to be represented. … It’s nice to give the public audience some variety stylistically and maybe even inspire them to try new things or pique their interest.”

Hout has assembled a variety of artists, including a street artist who uses spray paint, a printmaker and a high schooler, among others.

She said that variety was something she had hoped for from the beginning.

“It’s going to be a very diverse selection, which I‘m very excited about,” she said. “I definitely was looking for that, so it was nice that I had those options.”

Hout said surrounding art with plants is a natural fit for her, and a topic that was easy for her to get enthusiastic about. She said she hopes the murals fit the show well.

“I love gardening; I love plants and flowers,” she said. “They’re certainly inspiration to my own work. So it wasn’t difficult for me to latch onto.”
