5th Annual Grandview Digfest set for June 13 This year’s celebration of locally made drinks, food and music will take place Saturday, June 13 at The Grandview Yard, from 4 to 10:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Grandview Area Chamber “It’s hard to believe we’ve reached our five year anniversary already” says program chair, Curtis Onofri. “The event has grown quickly and has become a major source of funding for the Grandview Area Chamber,” he added. Onofri also serves as the Treasurer of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Each year the event has grown; vendors, sponsors and patrons have increased substantially since the inaugural event in 2011. This year for the first time, there are two Presenting Sponsors; The Grandview Yard and Members First, a Pathways Financial Credit Union. Chamber Director Michelle Wilson noted that having two presenting sponsors is a great help in promoting this event to a larger audience as well as enhancing the event. Five myths about the Affordable Care Act for midsize businesses Many businesses are struggling to understand and comply with the rules of the Affordable Care Act (ACA or health care reform law). To help them, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has a number of helpful resources at www.makinghealthcarereformwork.com, like this blog article that dispels five common myths about the ACA for companies with between 51 and 99 employees. • Myth #1: Our business is exempt from the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate. Companies with more than 100 full-time employees must provide health insurance to full-time workers starting this year. In 2016, companies with 51-99 full-time workers also will have to provide coverage. • Myth #2: Most businesses of our size don’t provide health insurance. The ACA requires midsize employers to change their existing coverage. But only a small percentage will be offering coverage for the first time. • Myth #3: Even if we are penalized for not providing coverage, we can deduct the penalty on our income taxes. Companies that fail to comply with the employer mandate are subject to a penalty. But the mandate is set up as a shared responsibility fee. This makes the penalty a tax that cannot be deducted for federal income tax purposes.
• Myth #4: We can continue to offer a limited benefit or mini-med plan. Limited benefit plans do not meet ACA rules, so you’ll need to upgrade coverage to meet the employer mandate. • Myth #5: We will have to buy our insurance from a government website. The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) is the online health insurance marketplace, or exchange, for businesses. But using the exchange is optional. Employers can buy directly from an insurance company or use a broker at no extra cost. New bridge means summer closure west of Fifth Avenue over Scioto River The summer road construction season will bring some traffic shifts to Marble Cliff and surrounding communities. Plans are complete for the construction of a new, wider West Fifth Avenue bridge over the Scioto River at the western gateway to Marble Cliff. Along with the new bridge, a shared use path along the south side of Fifth Avenue from Dublin Road to McKinley Avenue as well as a sidewalk on the north side of Fifth Avenue will be added. Work will begin in May and is scheduled to continue to November 2015 with portions of Fifth Avenue between Dublin Road and McKinley Avenue closed during construction. The bridge itself will be closed from July to November for a total replacement. East-west traffic on Fifth Avenue will be redirected to Trabue Road. The existing bridge was built in 1971 and rehabbed in 1995. Bridge inspections show that it is in need of work due to heavy use created by the development of the areas west of the Scioto River. The work will include shifting the new bridge slightly to the north

to better align with the intersection, adding a fourth lane on the bridge (dedicated to east bound Fifth Avenue traffic), and adding a shared use path on the south side and a sidewalk on the north side of the bridge. The shared use path on the south side of Fifth and sidewalk on the north side will extend all the way from Dublin Road to McKinley Avenue. Additional improvements included in this project will be new streetlights and trees as well as complete resurfacing of a portion of Fifth Avenue. LED traffic signals on mast arms will be installed at the intersection of Fifth Avenue
and Dublin Road and connected to the master signal controller system managed by the City of Columbus. A new crosswalk across Dublin Road will connect with the proposed bridge’s pedestrian walkway. The Scioto Greenway Trail along Dublin Road that currently ends at Fifth Avenue will connect to the bridge’s shared use path. The lead agency for this extensive project is the Columbus Department of Public Service. Funding is being provided by the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s municipal bridge funds, the City of Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks and City of Columbus Department of Public Service. Although the improvements will affect traffic in the short term, safety and traffic flow will be improved on these two very busy streets, said Richard Ortman, Columbus Department of Public Service, Division of Design and Construction. “This is a great project. People in the area need it and I hope they enjoy the improvements.”
2015 Gregory A. Kidwell Scholarship winners announced Each Spring, the Grandview Area Chamber is proud to award two $1,000 scholarships to Grandview Heights High School seniors. The money is intended to help offset college costs and the funds are given directly to the winner’s selected college/university. This year’s winners were Morgan Ettrich and Megan McCauley. These outstanding seniors have maintained grade point averages above 4.0, been involved in various service clubs, athletics, volunteer activities and have been employed by local companies. Scholarship criteria each stu-
dent has to meet to be considered for this scholarship are: • Student need not be a straight-A student, but should demonstrate a serious interest in academics (at least a 3.00 accum) and in giving back to the community through his/her chosen field of study. A track record of service will be favorably regarded. • Student should demonstrate financial need and explain why this scholarship will make it possible for him/her to achieve academic goals. • Student has worked after school/summers to earn money to help defray cost of own education.
The Grandview Area Chamber is a not-for-profit organization that offers scholarships in honor of Gregory A. Kidwell. Mr. Kidwell serves as President/CEO of Pathways Financial Credit Union (Members First). Under his leadership, Members First has supported many Grandview events and activities, including school programming. Mr. Kidwell’s exemplary work ethic and dedication to community is a shining example of what we all should strive to achieve as adults. 22nd Annual Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic The Tour de Grandview will celebrate 22 years in central Ohio when the event returns the streets of Grandview on Friday, June 26. This year’s race will once again have a racecourse that starts and ends on First Avenue.
