Grove City Chamber names 2011 Arts in the Alley parade marshal Annual event will commemorates Sept. 11, 2001 This year’s Arts in the Alley parade theme is to honor all first-responders and servicemen and women who responded on 9/11 and subsequently because of 9/11. Remember – Some Gave All. This will be the theme of the parade. The parade is privileged to have a very special parade marshal; First Sgt. Restituto D. Paz of Lima Company. The Arts in the Alley Parade ,hosted by the GCACC in partnership with the Grove City Girls’ Club, will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The parade will begin at Southwest Boulevard and Broadway, go south on Broadway, east on Columbus Street to Dudley Avenue and ending on Wilbur Avenue. Restituto D. Paz was born in Angeles City, Philippines. He enlisted into the Marine Corps on March 1, 1994, from Warner Robins, Ga., and underwent recruit training with 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Delta Company, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. His personal awards include the Navy and

Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with four gold stars (in lieu of 5th Award) and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with four bronze star (in lieu of 5th award). In February 2010, Paz was promoted to his present rank and received orders to 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment for duties as Company L, Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant. Company L, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines
(Lima Company) was awarded the General Clifton B. Cates Challenge Trophy as the outstanding ground combat unit in the 4th Marine Division (rein) during 1991. Company L was activated in January 2005 for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Company L ran continuous operations for seven months in Iraq, collecting valuable information, detaining suspected insurgents and inflicting many casualties to the insurgents and collecting many caches of weapons and explosives. This came at the cost of 22 Company L Marines and one Navy Corpsman who were killed in action and 28 wounded. The company redeployed back to Columbus in October 2005. Since their return, they have been training for the next mobilization in the future. In May 2010, Company L was activated and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The company redeployed back to Columbus in April First Sgt. Restituto D. Paz 2011.

Lilly’s Kitchen Table serves homemade items Lilly’s Kitchen Table was first started in the early 2000s, and its current owner, Tracey Cope, purchased the diner in 2010. Lilly’s is a family-owned diner featuring a slew of homemade items for breakfast and lunch anytime of the day. Geared toward anyone who wants a good meal at a good price, Tracey Cope’s version has been a welcomed addition to the Historic Town Center. Cope has been with every form of Lilly’s Kitchen Table since just months after the business originally opened. When the opportunity arose to become the owner of the diner, she went for it. She became the first person in Grove City to get an SPA loan from another local business, a branch Citizen’s Bank. She wanted to bring the feel of a family-owned and operated, mom-and-pop style diner to the downtown area. She chose to work in Grove City because after building a house here in 2001, it just felt right to have a business, too. There are specials all week long, conveniently listed on a chalkboard in-house
or on their Facebook page. Recent customers have been raving about Tuesday’s chicken noodles over mashed potatoes special, but Cope said that the homemade chicken salad was spectacular. Through a lot of hard work, some of the biggest successes at Lilly’s have been the new look which includes a mural inside the building by David Maple, having the gumption to stick to the basics at a reasonable price and having that friendly, homey atmosphere of a mom-and-pop diner from days past. By doing these things, Lilly’s Kitchen Table has gotten great feedback from the community. Cope said that she was very thankful for how supportive everyone has been and for the success that the support has brought with it. Lilly’s Kitchen Table is open from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. seven days a week and is at 4008 Broadway. Chamber auction to help fund student’s college dreams The Grove City Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Chamber Auction on Saturday, Dec. 10, starting at 6 p.m. and concluding at 10:30 p.m. The event will be at the beautiful Pinnacle Golf Club, 1500 Pinnacle Drive, Grove City. More than 200 people take part in this catered event each year. Last year, the Thanksgiving-themed Auction was a great success with live music and an auction ex-
perience for a great cause. This year will differ from the last in theme and items. The theme this year is “Christmas and Making a Difference.” Some item categories up for bid include trips, shows and restaurants. Some of the proceeds of the auction will benefit graduating students from SouthWestern City Schools and some will be benefitting the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber auction still has sponsorship opportunities available for this event. These opportunities range from half-page ads in the auction program for Bronze level sponsors to Platinum level sponsors who get prominent displays on Advertising Board at the auction venue. Goddard School provides quality early child care In April of 2005, The Goddard School came to Grove City. This school provides private, quality, early child care and education for Grove City and the community from children 6 weeks of age up to 10 years old, and a private kindergarten. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted by Elizabeth Hewitt, who invites all to come in to Step Lively for any type of foot pain that you may be experiencing. Fall is a good time to catch Tax treatment of truck up on landscaping plans and automobile expenses By MICHAEL LEACH
If April — and May — showers washed away your landscaping plans, don’t despair. Autumn is a great time to catch up. Arbor Day may be in April, but fall is an ideal time for planting most trees and shrubs. Plus, sale prices make this season even more appealing. Fall-planted trees don’t have to be coddled through summer heat, saving on watering. Roots keep growing in the warm soil, allowing the plants establish before winter. They’ll take off come spring. Remember, most roots grow in just the top 12 inches of the soil, so dig a wide, shallow, saucerlike planting hole no deeper than the root ball. The hole should be at least three times wider than the diameter of the branches to make it easy for the roots to grow. Before backfilling the hole with soil, remove as much of the burlap, wire cage or container you can to keep roots from being strangled as they grow. Water the area thoroughly and cover it with two inches of mulch. Don’t let the mulch touch the

tree. Check the root ball weekly by pushing your finger about an inch into the soil right around the roots. Water only if the soil feels dry. Use a trickle from the hose to slowly moisten the soil. Stop when it’s wet an inch down. Repeat until the ground freezes to help your new tree

By ALLEN HOUK The record-keeping as it relates to the business use of trucks and automobiles for tax year 2011 once again will be a challenge as the Internal Revenue Service has increased the standard mileage rate from 51 cents per mile to 55.5 cents per mile as of July 1, 2011. Small business owners often rely on the standard mileage rate as a simplistic way of deducting vehicle expenses. However, many times the use of the standard mileage rate may not result in the most advantageous tax deduction. In order to take full advantage of the allowed expenses, I recommend the following: • Keep a mileage log for each vehicle. The log should record the odometer reading, date, location and business purpose of all trips. This will assist the tax preparer in allocating vehicle mileage into the proper categories. • Keep records of all actual expenses on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis. These expenses include gas, repairs, oil changes, car washes, insurance, interest and lease payments. One easy
method to track these expenses is to use a separate credit or debit card for each business vehicle. • Provide your tax preparer with copies of leases, purchase agreements and loan docuAllen Houk ments as soon as you acquire a new or used vehicle. Walmart Distribution Center fights hunger with six-bed garden The local Grove City Food Pantry in Grove City Ohio is receiving additional help taking care of their citizens in need from Regional DC6024 (local Walmart distribution center) in the form of fresh produce. Walmart’s “Fight Hunger Campaign” sparked the interest of Mike Wiberg (assistant general manager) and Dan Kalmanir (maintenance operations manager) at DC6024 in Grove City to build a garden on site and donate 100 per-
cent of the produce to the local food pantry. They started in 2009 by building a raised three-bed garden with the intentions to provide healthier food options to those in need. Little did they know their passion for gardening and desire to help others would affect so many. In 2009, the garden produced 525 pounds of produce, and in 2010 that number grew to 880 pounds of produce. The garden was such a success with the local food pantry that over the last two
years the garden size increased from three to six beds, with a goal of producing 1,400 pounds of food in 2011. So far this year, with the help of many associates, the garden is on track to surpass the goal and feed even more people. We are proud of our DC and efforts from leaders like Mike and Dan and honored to work for a company that not only encourages us to make a difference in our communities but also supports us in accomplishing our goals.
