Bring the kids to Family Fun Day at the Chamber’s Farmers’ Market On July 30, Farmers’Market will be hosting Family Fun Day from 8 a.m. to noon behind City Hall.

This event offers a completely free way to entertain and feed your kids while still being able to do some grocery shopping at the market.

There will be many fun activities for kids including face painting, putt putt golf, inflatables and free food. Also, the Jackson Township Fire De-

partment will have one of their fire trucks there for the kids. This is a great event, not only for kids to play, but some participants also sneak educational information into their activities.

3 on 3 Basketball celebrates ‘hoop action’ and community spirit The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the third annual Hoops Off Broadway, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament July 16.

This year’s Hoops Off Broadway was a playground-style tournament for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17, and was played in the Grove City Town Center.

This tournament encouraged interaction between young people and adults while raising funds to support the American Red Cross and the Grove City High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team.

A portion also went toward programs at the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Curb appeal isn’t just for houses; businesses need sprucing up, too

By MICHAEL LEACH Business owners need to make that all-important first impression a positive one. Shaggy appearances always send the wrong message to prospective customers.

Here are some helpful hints to make sure your business looks inviting: 1. Walk across the street or out into the parking lot and look at from a distance as a customer would. Take a friend along for constructive criticism since they don’t see the business as often as you do.

2. Is your sign visible? Are there missing letters, faded colors, dated graphics, too much to read?

3. Does the building need cleaning or painting? Dirt and peeling paint suggest neglect — and maybe sloppy business practices.

Even if the landlord won’t cover the costs, consider what a fresh face may mean.

4. Keep the Michael Leach entrance area Chamber member clean. Once or twice a year use a power washer.

In between, hose off dust and spider webs on walls and stains and dirt on pavements.

5. Clean your windows.

Sparkling door glass and front windows are obvious signs of care.

A business after hours to remember at Real Living HER On Wednesday, June 15, the Realtors at Real Living HER threw a business after hours to welcome their new manager, Sherol Saxton Mulligan, that rivaled most professionally planned networking events.

Become a leader with the Chamber In September, the Chamber’s Southwest Community Leadership Program will begin.

The leadership program helps career-oriented individuals from the Grove City area develop their leadership skills and gives them a greater knowledge of the history and needs of our local community.

The program consists of nine courses, September through June, with one two-and-a-half hour class per month at various locations around Grove City. The cost is $250, which includes all meals, materials and transportation for the participant. The 2010-2011 class of Southwest Leadership really proved how much of a success it was this year. The class took over the plan-

ning of the Chamber’s golf outing and really made it the best year yet, by donating almost $4,000 to charity.

She elaborated by saying, “The Southwest Community Leadership Program provides a tremendous opportunity to learn more about your community and its leaders, connect with other business professionals, and give back through the group’s community service project.”

7. Same goes for indoor plants.

Remove leaves as soon as they start to yellow. Toss sickly and dead ones. Besides sending negative signals to customers, dead and dying plants are depressing.

8. An arrangement of long-lasting, fresh-cut flowers, such as carnations or mums, makes a delightful greeting. Replace when wilting starts. For little more than a super-size fast food fix, you give customers a welcome that suggests this business goes the extra mile.

Happy one-year anniversary to Citizens Bank on Stringtown Road Citizens Bank of Ashville held an open house Tuesday, June 21, celebrating its one-year anniversary of being at their newest location in Grove City, 2250 Stringtown Road. More than 60 people came out to celebrate the occasion from 5:30 to around 7:30 that evening.

Among the hosts were Calvin Gebhart, president of Citizens Bank; Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage, senior vice president of Citizens Bank; and Jane Queen, the branch manager.

Guests socialized while enjoying catering by Simply Delicious. They provided an ex-

tensive array of delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

The mini cupcakes were the favorite of the night. They came in five flavors and were small enough you could try each without excessive amounts of guilt, which is always a winning combination.

Integrity emphasized at Grove City Coin and Currency Clark Wolfe, owner of Grove City Coin and Currency and a former art teacher of Grove City High School, knows the pitfalls of buying and selling coins and collectables. He went through the frustrations for years before opening Grove City Coin and Currency in April 2008.

He always noticed a lack of service and remarkably highcost items among the low buying prices when he went out looking for coins. That’s when Wolfe decided to open shop to provide something that other places didn’t — an outlet where people can comfortably part with their collectables at fair market value.

He buys all types of money — U.S., foreign, and paper. He also buys pocket watches, knives and gold and silver jewelry, even if it’s broken.

Many other shops buy and sell the same items, but what sets Grove City Coin and Currency apart is the atmosphere and service.

One of the most interesting facts about the shop

service is its integrity and openness about all of the transactions. Everything is weighed on the counter in front of the customers on a state certified scale by pennyweight. Pennyweight is the common weight used in the valuation and measurement of precious metals, but has nothing to do with modern pennies.

Part of what draws in customers is the big bidding board, a board covered with handwritten business card size pieces of paper, which functions like a silent auction.

Wolfe says that his biggest success has been the reaction from the community. He has had a long career here as a teacher and would like to keep his shop here for a long time, too.

The store hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment Sundays. It is located at 3919 Broadway in Grove City.

Summer Sausage Hobo Packets Recipe Makes: 8 servings.

Prep Time: 25 minutes Grill Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients • 1 pound summer sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 3 cups shredded cabbage • 1 large sweet onion, halved and sliced • 1 medium green pepper, cut into strips • 1 medium sweet red pepper, cut into strips • 1 small zucchini, sliced • 1 small yellow summer squash, sliced • 1 pound chicken tenderloins, cut into 1-inch pieces • 2 medium tomatoes, cut into wedges • 1/2 cup butter, cut into eight cubes • 1/4 cup prepared Italian salad dressing

Directions 1. In a large bowl, combine first eight ingredients. Gently stir in chicken and tomatoes. Divide mixture among eight double thicknesses of heavy-duty foil (about 12 in. square). Top each with a butter cube..

2. Fold foil around mixture and seal tightly. Grill, covered, over medium heat for 20-25 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink and vegetables are tender. Carefully open foil to allow steam to escape; drizzle with dressing.

Focus on business

Heartland Rehabilitation Center far from typical Heartland Rehabilitation Center may sound like a typical rehab center, but it is far from typical.

Normally, at a rehabilitation center, patients come to get rehabilitated and sever their bonds with the center when that rehabilitation is done. That does not happen often at Heartland.

The Grove City branch opened seven years ago and at any given time can have about 50 patients enrolled to use the center. This particular branch is strictly outpatients, most of which are referred by their doctor, but some

attend based on direct access.

Director Michelle Edwards says that at Heartland, they want to “be people’s partner for life.”

Heartland follows up on this motto in many ways. After rehab, patients can and are encouraged to keep coming back to continue to better their health.

Many of the biggest success

stories from Heartland Rehabilitation Center are weight loss stories. Almost everyone has wanted to lose a few pounds in their life, whether or not that happens depends a lot on support. Heartland provides that support with its incredible feel and hard work inside the building and groups outside the building.

They have programs that help patients outside the facility, like an accountability program that keeps people on track or the two running groups that meet three times a week — Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. One of her goals is to start a rollerblading group to help patients stay fit and active while having a good time.
