T

here’s an irony when we celebrate giving—after all, generosity at its best requires no reward. As philanthropist and business leader Jay Schottenstein says in our cover story, “I’m not looking for accolades.” But when a couple such as Jay and his wife, Jeanie, give away nearly $10 million a year, it’s worth finding out more about what motivates their generosity. Dave Ghose, editor of Columbus CEO, does just that in his profile of this charitable couple on Page 8.

Donations from businesses play an important role in supporting the nonprofit sector in Central Ohio, and the benefits multiply when companies engage their workforces in their philanthropic efforts. Beginning on Page 13, we look at four very different companies with four very different employee engagement initiatives.

iving shouldn’t be a headache. The Columbus Foundation’s sleek, online Giving Store makes sure it’s not by introducing donors to worthy recipients they might not have considered and streamlining the donation process, all on one easy-to-navigate website.

“As the community foundation, we wanted to make sure our community knowledge was available to everybody,” says Angela Parsons, the foundation’s vice president of donor services and development.

There wasn’t always a single place, she pointed out, where donors could search for and then give to the philanthropic organizations that align with their passions.

So the foundation developed new software to address that need. Introduced in the summer of 2017, the Giving Store was a natural move for the Columbus Foundation, which already had extensive information on nonprofits in the 10-county Central Ohio area. “We had our website— all these great stories, great information—and then we had separate portals where donors would go to see their fund information,” Parsons says. “The biggest thing is combining the website with that portal, so they get information about critical need alerts and award winners as soon as they log on to the website.”

“For nonprofits, there’s really no downside” to inclusion in the Giving Store, Parsons says. “They’re not paying additional fees. A lot of them have not had the budget or the time to set up [online] fundraising.”

The Giving Store offers a bonus for taxpayers: annual itemized reports of their taxdeductible gifts.

In addition to alerts about critical needs in the community, the Giving Store offers Better Together, a platform for crowdfunding responses to community needs—with no credit card fees. In the first 10 months following Better Together’s launch in November 2017, 18 projects raised more than $144,000 for nonprofits in the Columbus region.

Visitors to the foundation’s website can also help Central Ohio families with one-time grants for emergency needs through Gifts of Kindness. And visitors to the Giving Store can purchase gift cards—physical or electronic, in denominations of $20, $50 or $100—to “give the gift of giving,” allowing their friends, family or colleagues to select one of the 1,026 organizations listed in the Giving Store as the recipient of their support.

Embracing the ingenuity of ecommerce, the Giving Store makes recommendations for projects similar to those a website visitor has already supported or searched. “There are things we learned from retail,” Parsons says. “We did want to think about user experience with this—what people do when they’re searching around for something.”

By providing easy access to information and effortless transactions, the Columbus Foundation seems to have found a cause everyone can rally around: making giving as simple as possible.

The Give-Back Wedding one couple dedicates their wedding to a salvadoran community in need and other charities.

W

hen Shelby and Anthony “AJ” Johnson were married in Columbus in July, the impact of their wedding reached well beyond the couple’s family and friends: A community in La Libertad, El Salvador, gained the funds to manage a new health clinic.

They met through Rock City Church in the Short North, where both have participated in annual mission trips to El Salvador. When the two started

pricing wedding venues, they couldn’t help thinking how much more good their money could do in the impoverished communities they’d visited.

“I’ve gone on multiple mission trips,” says Shelby.

“It’s hard when you know what a dollar can do overseas, and then tell yourself you’re going to spend $15,000 on yourself for one day.”

A friend connected the couple with Val Jorgensen, owner of Jorgensen Farms in Westerville. After hearing why the couple wanted to keep their wedding cost low, Jorgensen stunned Shelby by offering the venue for free. The couple immediately pledged to donate $5,000 to Total Health, which funds clinics in underserved Latin American communities and staffs them through partnerships with organizations such as Rock City. Thanks to a grant-matching program from an anonymous donor, that $5,000 became $10,000.

“I just felt it was the right thing to do,” says Jorgensen.

Her generosity moved the couple to think even bigger.

“When someone gives that boldly and freely,” says Shelby, “it’s just a huge game-changer.” She asked other vendors if they’d like to join the effort. Almost all, including a videogra-

pher, photographer, caterer, makeup artist and deejay, agreed to donate their services, either in whole or in part. “It just makes you realize, people have amazing hearts,” Shelby says.

In addition to their donation to Total Health, the Johnsons donated their gift registry, allowing a local family in need to register for items in their stead. In lieu of favors, the couple distributed tokens that guests used to vote for charities to which the newlyweds would make a donation.

Shelby and AJ hope similar-minded couples feel inspired, not intimidated, by their success. In fact, they are working with Jorgensen to recruit business partners who will help other couples follow their example.

“There are so many weddings that happen every year,” says AJ. “Imagine if 50 percent of those weddings said, ‘I’m going to do something charitable during our wedding.’ Can you imagine the impact that would make?”

In a rare interview, philanthropists Jay and Jeanie schottenstein share their philosophy of generosity.

doesn’t seem to want the conversation to end. After the allotted hour for the interview and photo shoot, he gives a 20-minute bonus tour of his offices, which are decorated with historic relics, photographs and other mementoes connected to his family’s charitable giving, the main talking point of the interview.

Jay is a passionate guide.

He talks with pride about a 13th-century Spanish Hebrew Bible he recently loaned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Standing before a model of the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel, he details plans for the new museum, which will house nearly 25,000 Dead Sea Scrolls fragments when it opens in Jerusalem in the next couple of years.

“It’ll be the most important archaeological museum in the world,” he says.

The couple’s generosity

benefits a dizzying number of organizations and programs in Columbus and around the world. According to IRS records, the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Foundation, the family’s charitable arm, disbursed nearly $30 million from 2014 to 2016, the most recent years available on Guidestar.org, the online repository of nonprofit financial data. And despite the size of those contributions, Jay and Jeanie still manage to keep a relatively low profile.

“They’re doing it to benefit other people, and it begins and ends right there,” says Rabbi Gedaliah Zlotowitz,

“Helping each other and being part of a bigger community is something that is within our faith, that is part of what we do.”

D

espite a reputation for reserve and reticence, it turns out Jay Schottenstein has a lot to say. In an ornate, woodpaneled conference room at his Columbus corporate headquarters, the media-shy retail tycoon is enthusiastic and engaged, telling stories about his childhood, his father, even how he met his wife, Jeanie, who sits beside him on this Friday afternoon in early October. When they were both undergraduates at Indiana University, Jay ran a program at the Hillel Center on the IU campus that enticed students with complimentary food. “Jeanie came with all her girlfriends for the free meals,” he says with a smile.

The couple rarely grants interviews, and the conversation starts off a bit tentatively. But the more they talk, the more comfortable they become. In fact, Jay

who runs ArtScroll, a nonprofit Jewish publishing house in Brooklyn that is one of the Schottensteins’ biggest beneficiaries. “It’s not for themselves. It’s not to be in the limelight.”

Which raises a question: So why are they talking now? The answer traces to remarks Jay gave at a preview party for the annual gala of the local chapter of JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), another longtime Schottenstein beneficiary.

At the small May event in a private suite at Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center, Jay shared his philosophy of giving, which he boiled down to two key tenets: You give so you can give more. And what you give determines your net worth, not what you have. Asked to elaborate on those comments for this article, Jay and Jeanie accepted the opportunity, breaking their traditional silence. “We believe the more you give, the more God gives you,” Jay explains in October.

Jeanie says their faith grounds their philanthropy.

Charity—or “tzedakah,” as it’s called in Hebrew—holds special importance in Judaism. Differing from other religious traditions, Jewish doctrine views charity as an essential, moral obligation for all; it’s even considered one of the three human actions—along with prayer and repentance—that can negate an unfavorable divine judgment. “Tzedakah is a very big part of our lifestyle, how we conduct ourselves,” Jeanie says.

“Helping each other and being part of a bigger community is something that is within our faith, that is part of what we do.”

And though Jay is clearly proud of his charitable projects, vanity and egotism don’t appear to motivate

his new public candor.

Rather, he hopes his story influences others to share their blessings with the world. “I’m not looking for accolades,” he says. “If God blesses you, and you have the resources, then you have an obligation to do the right thing.”

Home and Homeland

The Schottenstein family traces its history in Columbus to the late 1800s, when three brothers—Joshua, Jacob and Joseph—emigrated from Lithuania. Joshua had nine children, according to a Schottenstein family tree published in Columbus Monthly in 1984, and his descendants eventually spawned an entrepreneurial dynasty that includes successful enterprises in law, furniture, clothing, home building and real estate development.

Jay Schottenstein, the great-grandson of Joshua, is the wealthiest and most successful of all the Schottenstein heirs. When Jay’s father, Jerome, died of cancer in 1992, Jay inherited a retail empire that began in 1917, when former horseand-buggy shoe peddler Ephraim Schottenstein, Jay’s grandfather, opened 10

the E.L. Schottenstein Department Store on South Parsons Avenue. Today, Jay oversees a sprawling network of businesses that includes DSW, American Eagle Outfitters, Value City Furniture, liquidation expert SB360 Capital Partners and the Schottenstein Property Group, an owner of 156 shopping centers in 27 states. Though it’s difficult to calculate his net worth—

which is spread across various public and private entities—Forbes ranked the Schottensteins as the 100th richest family in the country in 2015. He is generally considered the second-richest person in Central Ohio, behind only L Brands billionaire Les Wexner.

Though Jay does his best to avoid publicity—and, in this interview, declines to discuss his private holdings or share dollar amounts related to his giving—there are occasional glimpses into his wealth. Their $4.3 million home in Bexley features extensive gardens that the Schottensteins have twice allowed the Bexley Women’s Club to include in its annual house and garden tour, a fundraiser for scholarships.

Their yacht, Just J’s— described as having an elevator and a Jacuzzi— appeared in media accounts thanks to a visit from basketball stars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

James and Jay are old friends. In a 2016 interview with the Plain Dealer, James described Jay and his children as family. He says he met them while playing state championship basketball games for

Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School at the Schottenstein Center, the Ohio State University basketball arena named for Jay’s father, Jerome. James even nominated Jay in 2009 for the Time 100, the magazine’s annual list of the world’s most influential people.

Incidentally, Jay’s wealth and business acumen weren’t the inspiration for that Time honor. Instead, the magazine called out his philanthropy. In Columbus, “The Schott,” as it’s commonly known, is his most prominent charitable contribution. In 1995, he pledged $12.8 million to help build the arena, which opened three years later. In turn, the university named the center for his father, while the seating bowl is called Value City Arena for one of Jay’s most prominent businesses.

That OSU pledge was a rare high-profile gift. Typically, Jay shares his wealth more quietly. In addition to Ohio State, he and Jeanie are longtime supporters of such organizations as the American Red Cross, the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, the United Way of Central Ohio, Nationwide Children’s Hospital

and the Columbus Museum of Art, where Jeanie has served on the board of trustees for 21 years.

At the CMA, the couple gave one of the leading gifts of the museum’s Art Matters endowment and capital campaign, says Nannette Maciejunes, CMA’s executive director. In recognition of that gift, the museum named its new pavilion space after the Schottenstein Property Group. In addition, the couple, major art collectors, have loaned pieces from their collection to the museum, including three Marc Chagall paintings from July 2017 to March 2018 and, before it was part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Jerusalem in the Middle Ages exhibit, the 13th-century Spanish Hebrew Bible from December 2015 to March 2016.

“They have been remarkably generous,” Maciejunes says. “They care deeply about Columbus, and they care very much about the arts. They’re very special.”

Maciejunes says she always feels the couple’s deep commitment to Columbus in everything they do. “This is [Jay’s] hometown,” she says. “This is where generations of

his family have become business leaders. He wants Columbus to be the very best it can be, and for both of them, art is part of how they can contribute to the quality of their hometown community.” They also have a passion for Jewish culture, Maciejunes says, and they’ve helped the CMA build a relationship with the Israel Antiquities Authority, which loaned a fourthcentury Roman mosaic and ancient Roman glass to the museum. “That would never have been possible without the friendship of Jay and Jeanie,” Maciejunes says.

Indeed, Jay and Jeanie support an extraordinary number of Jewish causes.

According to 2014-16 IRS filings, their foundation made substantial gifts to the Columbus Torah Academy, the Columbus Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus, Congregation Torat Emet, the Columbus Community Kollel and the Ohio State University Chabad House, along with a handful of smaller local contributions.

On the global stage, they’re even more significant Jewish benefactors. Of the top 10 beneficiaries

listed in their 2014-16 IRS filings, half are based in Israel, including the Israel Antiquities Authority, which will name its new archaeological museum for the couple; Diaspora Yeshiva, a Jewish school on Mount Zion; Chasdei Yosef, a social welfare organization in Jerusalem; and the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, which supports the sacred “Wailing Wall.”

Why are they so committed to Israel? “Because of our heritage, because of our deep commitment to our faith and to the people who are of our faith,” Jeanie says.

“Israel is our homeland.” Jay says he wants help ensure

the viability and future of the Jewish state. “Seventysome years ago, there were 6 million Jews murdered, and there was nowhere for them to go,” he says. “If there would have been an Israel, they probably wouldn’t have been murdered.”

A Family Tradition

Jay learned the importance of philanthropy from his father and his uncles, who supported a variety of causes—including the United Way, the Jewish Federation of Columbus and the preservation of the Ohio Theatre—and asked for nothing in return. “They believed in helping people,” Jay says. “They always put whatever was better for the community in front of themselves.”

Today, Jay aims to continue in that unselfish tradition. Unlike other major donors, he’s very hands-off.

“He doesn’t crave control,” says his philanthropy chief, Michael Broidy. “He gives people the sense of taking responsibility.” He also doesn’t keep score. “I never look back at the amount I give,” Jay says. “I just give, and we always make it work.

I just give and go on to the next thing.”

Babylonian Talmud, or Talmud Bavli, the central compendium of Jewish law, tradition and theology that was written in Aramaic.

Broidy returns with a thick, leather-bound book, as well as a yarmulke, which Jay places on his head before opening the sacred text.

“This project is the biggest literature project done in the history of American Jews,” Jay says.

Indeed, the series that is now officially called the “Schottenstein Edition” is a towering—and expensive— achievement. Each volume costs about $250,000 to produce, according to the The New York Times—a price tag that would have been insurmountable for ArtScroll without the longtime support of the Schottensteins. For nearly three decades, the family has spent millions underwriting this and other ArtScroll projects. Jerome, who studied at a yeshiva in New York City before deciding to go into the family business, started the partnership with ArtScroll in 1990. When he died two years later, his son agreed to continue the Talmud project, which took 15 years to complete. Jay also expanded it, supporting a Hebrew translation as well.

By removing the language barrier, the Schottenstein Edition revolutionized the study of the Talmud, making it more accessible. Today, you can find the series in homes, libraries, synagogues and study halls all over the world. People study it during subway commutes, on long airline flights and while they wait to see a doctor. Zlotowitz, the president of ArtScroll, the books’ publisher, says there’s even a barbershop in Brooklyn with a full set for its customers. In 2012,

influenced her. “My family instilled an ethic of kindness and helping other people,” says Jeanie, a Cleveland native. “And I’ve learned so much from Jay’s philosophy—how openhearted he is, his philosophy of not counting, giving to help other people no matter what it is.”

Still, they can’t support everything. So how do they choose? First, they’re loyal, nurturing longstanding relationships with organizations in Columbus and elsewhere.

Then they look for causes and opportunities in which they can have a big impact, where, as Jeanie says, “recipients feel the benefit.”

Perhaps no project exemplifies those values more than their longtime collaboration with the Mesorah Heritage Foundation, the charitable and fundraising arm of ArtScroll, a New York City nonprofit publisher of Jewish religious books.

When asked about this relationship, Jay lights up.

He asks Broidy to fetch a volume from the “Schottenstein Edition,” the 73-book English translation of the

Zlotowitz says the Schottensteins are an inspiration to others. “Whenever I meet potential donors or dedi-

cators, for them the gold standard is the Schottenstein family,” he says.

“Everyone tells me the same thing: ‘I want to be like Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein. I want to make a difference in the world.’ ” And what do Jay and Jeanie see as their charitable legacy? “That we changed what we thought needed to be changed, and that we stood for something, and that we helped,” Jeanie says.

Jay smiles. “That’s good,” he says. “I can’t add to that.”

where they operate. Most business leaders will tell you that their biggest asset is their workforce—and engaging employees in community service, community improvement and other efforts to support nonprofit organizations can multiply the impact of corporate

giving. Some have found this is also a way to increase employee satisfaction. On the following pages, we profile four Central Ohio businesses that have developed their own unique ways of encouraging employees to be a part of community improvement efforts, from a large natural gas supplier that deploys its entire workforce for an annual day of service to a digital marketing firm that employs a pro bono model, offering its services free of charge to sharpen one nonprofit’s outreach efforts.

Engaging employees in community service can be costly and timeconsuming—but executives at each of the following companies said the benefits outweighed the cost.

“Knowing that you work for a business that wants to change lives and change communities gives them a greater sense of purpose,” says insurance agent Andrea Taylor, whose 12 Months of Giving engages her staff in monthly service projects. “This isn’t just coming to a job. We have a vision, and they see our work out in the community and how it impacts others.”

IGS employees give 5,000 volunteer hours in an annual, company-wide Day of service.

B

y his own admission, Robert Emery is not especially handy around the house. Yet this past April, the financial analyst at IGS Energy put on a tool belt in the name of a good cause.

As part of IGS’ AllEmployee Day of Service— a program in which the energy company’s workers are encouraged to leave their offices and spend a weekday volunteering with a nonprofit organization—Emery signed up with Habitat for Humanity, which was constructing a house in Hungarian Village. Emery was given an assignment to help install the new home’s vinyl siding.

a house that was ultimately going to be for somebody that doesn’t necessarily have the means to buy a house like that—that was obviously awesome,” Emery says.

Goodwill, food pantries and animal shelters are among the many agencies IGS teams with on this day of service. The energy company, which supplies gas and electricity to states scattered across the U.S., operates out of Dublin.

The program originated with internal surveys that suggested employees were eager to volunteer but lacked the know-how to get started, says IGS director of community investments Jen Bowden.

“We actually asked people, ‘How many times in the last 12 months have you volunteered?’ ” says Bowden. “If their answers were below a certain point, it was, ‘What were the barriers that stood in the way of you volunteering more?’ ” Bowden says that a statistically meaningful number of employees said that the prospect of volunteering was intimidating. “We had lots of employees who wanted to volunteer for causes but didn’t know how to navigate that themselves,” she says.

In response to the demand, IGS launched the All-Employee Day of Service in 2016. The event may take place on a single day each year, but requires many months of advance planning.

“About six to eight months ahead of the day of service, we start lining up and organizing volunteer sites,” Bowden says. “Most volunteer shifts are two or three hours, and we want to send people for an entire day, so a lot of times the nonprofits will need time to think about a project that’s big enough.”

Employees sign up for specific opportunities available on the day of service using an online registration tool. “It might say, ‘Goodwill Columbus has room for 20 people, Habitat for Humanity has room for 14 people,’” says Bowden, who adds that some employees don’t have a preference about where to volunteer—they just want to get involved. Although Bowden says participation is not mandatory, the company has a participation rate close to 100 percent.

Increasingly, the day of service is timed to align with National Volunteer Week, but it always takes place on a business day, during business hours. “We don’t say we shut down the company for the day, but the entire company spends an entire workday giving back to the community,” Bowden says. “That’s a big statement.”

IGS’s commitment to supporting volunteer service helps attract prospective employees, says Bowden, who points out that candidates at career fairs often ask about ways in which the company gives back.

about a year ago, was drawn to the company because of its reputation for encouraging volunteerism.

“There are a lot of factors that go into choosing a company to work for,” Emery says. “Most people think of pay and time off and all that, which are obviously important, but at the end of the day, you also really want to have a positive impact on the community.”

In fact, the goal of the company is to make the day of service amount to more than just one day.

“The next day, we have an opportunity where we celebrate,” Bowden says.

“We aggregate stories and the list of all of the work that was accomplished.” Then emails go out, reminding employees of further ways to volunteer.

“It’s not just this sidebar thing that comes along once a year,” Bowden says.

“It’s consistent with our higher purpose and with the culture that employees experience coming to work every day.”

As Emery sees it, the day of service is also a chance to get to know colleagues outside of their comfort zones.

“I know I had to look pretty ridiculous at times, trying to measure the siding and then cutting it and searching for studs in the wall,” he says.

“It’s cool, because these people are experts in other fields, yet they’re a little bit vulnerable out when they’re doing construction.”

ew Albany has a reputation as a quiet residential village, but every year on the first Friday after Labor Day, the area seriously rocks out.

The city is home to retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, which, for the past 17 years, has held the A&F Challenge on its corporate campus. Something of a cross between a fall festival and a rock concert, the event raises money for a corporate partner. The Challenge, open to the public as well as employees, offers music from local bands, a 5K run, putt-putt golf, hot-air balloons and ax-throwing.

beneficiary has been the SeriousFun Children’s Network, a worldwide organization of camps that cater to young people with serious medical ailments.

The SeriousFun Children’s Network was chosen as the Challenge’s partner on the recommendation of A&F employees.

“A couple of our associates went to volunteer at the camp,” says Aubree Jones, senior director of human resources and community engagement at Abercrombie & Fitch. “When those associates came back with the excitement that they saw, it just kind of organically grew from there.”

For its first 15 years, the event was an in-house party.

“It started as a way for the company and the associates just to have a little fun and give back to the community,” says Jones. “But we realized that we could scale this in a bigger way by opening it to the broader community.”

The A&F Challenge raises money for SeriousFun through a variety of means, including corporate sponsorships and an in-store campaign during which Abercrombie & Fitch customers are asked to round up their purchases.

The largest revenue stream, however, is ticket sales. This year, tickets were $75 for

adults and $25 for children.

The event sold out, with about 5,000 attending.

“It’s really like allexpense-paid—all of your food, all of your drink, all of the entertainment,” Jones says. Guests contribute by purchasing tickets, and then enjoy the day without being solicited for further donations.

While the marketing benefits for a youth-oriented brand of a big community party featuring rock music are evident, the event is not an advertisement, says Jones. “When you come here, you don’t see pop-up shops where they’re saying, ‘Hey, come buy our merchandise,’ ” she says. “Obviously, we do yield some business benefit from this, but that’s not the primary objective. …

We do good because it’s the right thing to do.”

In the weeks leading up to the Challenge, anticipation mounts among those who work on the campus in New Albany. For a week prior to the event, technicians and builders are visible on campus, setting up stages and sound equipment, says senior sourcing specialist Dougie Taylor. “By the day before the Challenge, the excitement is very much in the air and you can really see the stage coming together.”

they find themselves more than a little distracted. “The bands start their sound check at about 8 a.m. down in the courtyard,” Jones says. “As someone whose office sits right behind it, I’ll tell you, there’s not a whole lot of focus. … The doors open at 5, and that’s when the world kind of starts to descend on us.”

Abercrombie & Fitch’s investment in SeriousFun Children’s Network continues after the Challenge ends. The company sends more than 100 employees to work as counselors at camps around the world each summer, giving each a full paid week off to volunteer, without cutting into their vacation time. The company even pays travel and other expenses.

“We sent over 50,000 T-shirts to the camps worldwide,” adds Taylor. “That’s one less thing they have to pay for that they have to give out to every camper and every volunteer.”

Although it might seem indulgent for a company to sacrifice a work day to host a party, Abercrombie & Fitch sees long-term advantages in having employees dedicated to service. “It certainly benefits us from their productivity, their engagement and, frankly, just their belief in what we do and what our brand stands for,” Jones says.

What They Do Best

Adept Marketing adopts a pro bono model to maximize the impact of its community service.

“They gave us a house—except for the walls,” explains a father in a video, describing his family’s gratitude for items received from the Furniture Bank.

The four-minute film, created by Adept Marketing, was just one component of a yearlong pro bono project for Furniture Bank of Central Ohio, an effort that began when Justin Spring, co-founder of Adept, grew tired of volunteering hours instead of talent and expertise.

For years, he says, Adept employees were encouraged to volunteer for local nonprofits. “It was great, but I started thinking about the

impact we had. The effect of our [volunteerism] ended as soon as we were done.

There are a ton of nonprofits that aren’t doing digital marketing very well, so we said, ‘This year, instead, let’s adopt one nonprofit and do what we do best.’ ” The digital marketing firm put out a call on social media, offering an equivalent of $50,000 in free marketing services, strategy and execution to an organization serving Central Ohio. Over a two-month application period, the Adept team received more than 40 applications from qualified nonprofits.

Furniture Bank’s submission stood out.

“Their application spoke our language,” Spring says.

“It was really well written in terms of how they wanted to grow and how they thought digital marketing would help. We all kind of take for granted what we have in our homes. They educated us even in just their application about this problem.”

Furniture Bank’s mission “is to turn empty houses into homes,” says agency president Steve Votaw. His staff works with families coming out of homelessness, domestic violence, child abuse, natural disaster and other dire situations.

The bank collects donated furniture from the community and, in turn, gives it to struggling families. The furniture comes from all

over—volunteers, residents, corporations, universities, hotels—and even includes some pieces constructed

by Furniture Bank itself.

Typically seen as the giver, Furniture Bank was honored to receive a gift instead.

“It was like Christmas, in all honesty,” Votaw says of the moment he heard they had won Adept’s contest. “It’s difficult to do much strategic marketing. We don’t have the resources to do that. To get to partner with Adept, to really dive into digital marketing like this, it was a fabulous opportunity. We’re so grateful, and we’ve built a great relationship.”

Throughout 2018, Adept worked with Furniture Bank like any high-profile client.

They set up information gathering sessions, reviewed the nonprofit’s current marketing materials and developed concepts to better tell the organization’s story.

Using their well-honed skills, the digital marketing pros then developed a strategy for streamlining Furniture Bank’s web presence, consolidating three domains into one. The short video Adept produced for Furniture Bank was a powerful highlight for the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration.

thrift store and fine-tuned its messaging—all with an eye on what Furniture Bank’s team could manage on its own after the year of gratis work concluded.

“Nonprofits tend to partner with other nonprofits a lot,” Votaw says.

“This was a different kind of a collaboration. We’ve never experienced a partnership quite like this, and it has been beneficial to our whole organization. Our staff has been able to see how we can innovate on our side, and Adept increased our knowledge of what we’re able to do … and how we present ourselves to our community.”

As for his team at Adept, Spring says its members gained a lot from the experience and are excited to continue the program next year.

“We’re getting to do what we’re really good at doing and using our talents to make an impact on lives of people who couldn’t be more in need,” Spring says. “To give more people a chance at a better life, a place to put their kids at night or when they eat their food—there’s nothing more rewarding than using something you’ve spent 15 years learning to do really well and apply it to that.” giviNg 2019 coluMBus MoNthly | coluMBus ceo

I

n 2014, Gahanna-based State Farm insurance agent Andrea Taylor and her team decided to give back during the holidays. The plan was to donate their time and resources for, as the Christmas song goes, 12 days.

The plan was well intentioned. It was also impossible.

Daily office demands proved too overwhelming for the philanthropic project to come to completion, says Taylor. Yet her motivation persisted.

“I’m a dreamer,” she says, “and the main reason 20

I became an agent was to make a difference in the lives of others and in my community. So I thought, ‘Why not 12 months instead of 12 days?’ ” Nearly five years later, Taylor and her three employees are still at it, selecting a different local organization each month to give donations or provide volunteer support.

They’ve visited families at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus, bringing toys and teddy bears; made gift bags for children with terminal illnesses; led free community yoga classes; sponsored local

football teams; delivered doughnuts and coffee to police stations during Law Enforcement Appreciation Day; and helped build a park playground, among other projects.

Taylor reports that her employees enjoy and draw satisfaction from their service. “Knowing that you work for a business that wants to change lives and change communities gives them a greater sense of purpose,” she says.

Rather than petering out, the initiative has grown. Taylor recently hired a part-time director

of philanthropy to manage that growth. “There’s a lot of back-end work that nobody sees: logistics, going out and buying items. … This could be a full-time job in and of itself.”

The initiative is as good for the business as it is for the community, says Taylor.

The visibility of her agency’s commitment builds trust, an important foundation for any insurance provider.

The organizations she and her employees serve receive both physical donations and intangible gifts. Consider, for example, Taylor’s regular volunteerism for Dress for Success Columbus.

“Whether she’s sorting suiting donations or facilitating a workshop in our career center, [Taylor’s] positivity elevates the experience,” says Vicki Bowen Hewes, CEO of Dress for Success Columbus. “Her dedication of time, treasure and talent have elevated our mission.

With volunteers like Andrea widening our reach, more women are engaged in a meaningful way and [are] ultimately successful.”

The personal benefits of giving back are clear to Taylor, too.

“I have one life, and I don’t intend on wasting it,” she says. “No one’s going to care about the car I drove and where I lived. I want to be remembered for being an integral part of my community.”

We are known for pet adoptions, but we do so much more! Our comprehensive programs and services enable us to be a first resource for individuals and families throughout the community. We provide critical support for people who are struggling to provide care for their pets, as well as a loving place for those pets to come if needed. As a nonprofit with law enforcement responsibilities, we make 6,000 visits a year to investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect. We partner with the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine to provide training opportunities at our veterinary hospital for every fourth-year student. We offer free housing, food and medical care for the animals of victims of domestic violence through our Safe Haven program. We care for an average of 250 animals daily, including more than 30 different species. We offer charity boarding to those who need short-term solutions to critical problems, and we work to prevent pet homelessness through 4,500 spays/neuters annually.

Over the past year, we have transformed our shelter to quadruple the amount of space that each cat has to live in while on the adoption floor; we have added

MISSION Offering welcome, hospitality and hope … Hope Hollow is a nonprofit, charitable organization providing complimentary lodging, meals, transportation assistance and emotional support to persons with cancer, and their loved ones, who are financially in need while coming to Columbus, Ohio, for their cancer treatment.

STORY OF HOPE HOLLOW Jane Jacquemin-Clark and Kevin Clark founded Hope Hollow after Jane survived two cancers and lost her mother and aunt to pancreatic cancer. The couple felt called to live the gratitude for Jane’s life and to honor those they loved who died of cancer.

“Some of the situations we’ve encountered are heart-wrenching,” says Kevin. “Cancer patients and their families sometimes sleep in their cars, do not have money for food and are uncertain how they will have the gas money to get back home. Hope Hollow is here to help when people need it most.”

When Jenny Turner and her husband, Chris, needed support during her treatment at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute for breast cancer, Jane and Kevin not only welcomed them to stay in their home but provided critical emotional support.

“Jane hugged me and held me and was just the most comforting person,” says Jenny, who endured a major health scare before starting her chemotherapy. “It was like having family here that couldn’t come from back home.”

YOU CAN HELP gIVE HOPE Demand for services is growing. Hope Hollow provided 300 nights of lodging in 2015, and in 2018 the nonprofit will provide more than 1,200 nights of lodging, as well as thousands of dollars a month for food and transportation assistance.

In 2013, a screening colonoscopy resulted in Clara Whitaker being diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. Although colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer diagnosis, Clara had a rare cancer type called neuroendocrine rectal cancer. This led to a period of her going in and out of intense treatments that were unsuccessful.

In 2017, her cancer spread aggressively, resulting in a 9-centimeter mass in her neck and additional tumors in her cervix and lung.

“The treatments left me so tired, I didn’t have the energy to do much but lie on the couch,” Clara recalls.

Clara says she has energy and is able to do the things she wants to do, for which she is very grateful.

Clara was referred to Sameek Roychowdhury, mD, PhD, and the Precision Cancer medicine Clinic at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

“I see such a difference in her on this drug.

She has energy to enjoy life again,” says Shelby Whitaker, Clara’s husband of 55 years.

Genomic testing at the OSUCCC – James showed that her tumor had characteristics that made her a candidate for a newer immunotherapy drug called nivolumab (marketed as Opdivo). Clara has been receiving nivolumab treatment since September 2017, and her tumors have nearly disappeared.

“We hope that more patients with rare cancers can benefit like Clara,” says Roychowdhury. “Up to 15 percent of cancer diagnoses are considered rare. That’s more than 200,000 patients per year. We hope that more resources can be devoted to understanding these rare cancers.”

Formed in 1898, LifeCare Alliance is Central Ohio’s first in-home health care agency, Ohio’s first agency to provide visiting nurses and the nation’s second agency to deliver Meals on Wheels.
