Letter from the Editor

L

ast year, Columbus Monthly and Columbus CEO teamed up to produce the inaugural edition of Giving. This year, we’ve outdone ourselves by adding even more content and more events to this, Central Ohio’s only comprehensive guide to philanthropy.

We hope that, as with last year’s edition, you’ll continue to refer to these pages all year long as a source of inspiration and beneficence.

This year, we’ve profiled a number of local “givers” about what drives them to donate their time, talents and treasure to a number of worthy causes.

You can read their insights beginning on Page 11. We’ve also spoken to staff at the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations for tips on getting a new organization off the ground (Page 8), and to several individuals in the social enterprise scene about what’s driving this new business model (Page 21).

If you enjoy giving gifts that give back, we’ve rounded up local products that have a philanthropic angle (Page 6).

We certainly wouldn’t fault you for wanting any of the items in your own home as well. And we’ve chosen a few newcomers to the nonprofit scene (Page 9) that we think are worth a second look for those in search of a charity to support.

Getting Started Ready to Grow Your new nonprofit has a name, 501(c) status and an EIN. What’s next?

T

he internet has made it easier than ever to learn and navigate first steps toward launching a nonprofit organization.

Once the initial forms have been filed and basic decisions about name and mission have been fleshed out, however, next steps can seem murkier. How should a new organization grow effectively—without getting ahead of itself?

Meredith Rosenbeck, board chair of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations and member of Rosenbeck Law (where she specializes in the nonprofit sector), shares her insights on smart tasks for nascent organizations.

Choose the Board Strategically Only make your board as big as need dictates.

“The more you have, the more difficult it can be to take action,” Rosenbeck explains. “Ask yourself, ‘What do we need to function well, so that our board is engaged and helping build the [organization]?’”

She also recommends resisting the urge to stack the board with the founder’s friends or allies, and instead look to what skills or networks potential board members may bring to the table.

“Think about the types of expertise you need ... perhaps someone with accounting knowledge or a business background to help advise you with operational issues,” says Rosenbeck. Should you need a little extra help figuring out your board needs, she adds, “there are lots of consultants that do nothing but board consultation.”

Think Local and Like-minded Nonprofits usually want to hit the ground running when it comes to fundraising and often begin applying to as many grant opportunities as possible—a strategy Rosenbeck cautions against. “You don’t yet have a proven track record.

Start with grassroots fundraising, telling people what you’re doing and how what you’re doing is different. Let people know you’re there.”

She adds that while it’s tempting to roll out major, wide-reaching campaigns, new organizations often benefit most by starting local. “Start getting donations from people and businesses in your own community,” she suggests. “Once you have a program in place and you can prove to a foundation that you have some existing support, then you can apply for grants.

Otherwise, you probably won’t get very far.”

Another way Rosenbeck recommends new organizations gain traction is by seeking out collaborations with established, reputable organizations in the area that have likeminded or complementary missions to help build exposure and credibility.

Rosenbeck identifies a few key business-related housekeeping items that absolutely cannot be overlooked.

For example, every nonprofit is required to file an IRS Form 990 annually after the end of their fiscal year.

“Smaller [organizations] need to know that while the 990 is really, really easy, it is really crucial; if they don’t file timely for three years in a row, [the IRS] will revoke [their] tax-exempt status,” she explains. “[Then] they will have to write a letter to all their donors for the past three years and tell them their donation is no longer tax-deductible. It’s very hard to get reinstated, especially retroactively. That’s why having a board member with some bookkeeping or accounting knowledge can be really helpful.”

Rosenbeck adds that all of an organization’s activity needs to fit within the tax-exempt purpose it first provided the IRS when filing for 501(c) status. “If you’re a pet rescue [organization], you can’t just decide you’re going to fundraise for orphans in Ohio,” she explains. “The IRS will allow for change over time, but if you change purpose or expand, you need to let IRS know. It could be a big deal if you’re audited.”

An easy way to keep everyone on the same page is to provide training for all new employees and board members, providing them with your bylaws, articles of organization and other key pieces of information about your mission and scope, Rosenbeck adds.

Why I Give:

M

y parents were deliberate about making sure we recognized that there are other people in the world who are less fortunate. That planted a seed, and it is part of my family’s core values: We should care about our community.

Health and wellness have always been focus areas for me, as well as education. I am an alum of Vanderbilt University and I am an African-American, so I helped to create the first Association of Vanderbilt Black Alumni Scholarship (AVBA). We are privileged to be able to pay for my daughter’s education at Vanderbilt, but it’s so important for me to be able to donate to other students who don’t have that opportunity.

I encourage people to reflect on what is really important to them and connect with organizations that align with their interests as a donor, but it’s also important to be mindful and make sure that basic needs are being met in the community.

One of the barriers of philanthropy that I see is that people might think their gift won’t make a difference. I’ve encouraged my family to start small and make gifts of their time, talents or treasures. It all adds up. It’s the overall impact that the collective gift can make.—KA

Why I Give:

W

hen I worked for City Hall in the ’80s to late ’90s, I got involved in the Columbus Literacy Council’s Project Power program, which was a city-sanctioned program that allowed me to tutor and mentor someone whose literacy skills were less than proficient.

My mentee Tim’s reading skills were around the

third-grade level, and he was in his 40s. I was able to help him learn how to read a little bit better. He taught me more about being able to relate to other people and not see differences.

We bridged that hierarchical problem, we bridged age difference, we bridged race, and it was all a matter of that I had something to share with him. I knew I couldn’t spend time with each individual, so I decided to invest my funds in the

Columbus Literacy Council.

I give to BRAVO because of my association on the board for several years. No hate crimes should be tolerated.

With CHOICES, nobody, regardless of their age and gender, should have to suffer any abuse. The Columbus Foundation is currently focused on a theme of “kind.” I am so about wanting this community to be mindful and kind, especially in these days.—HL

teve: We’ve been fortunate enough through our careers that we have the ability and the privilege to help others now.

United Way, as an umbrella organization, really has the ability to touch a lot of our overall community.

We started out young, giving in ways that we could with our time and donating money. As we’ve had the means to be able to do more,

we have. It’s our philosophy at home that we should be involved, and because we have the opportunity to do it, we ought to. We have a 10-year-old who we’ve been able to bring along with us to volunteering events.

Amber: Aidan donates his birthday a lot. Probably about half the time, instead of getting gifts, he picks a cause or an entity and raises money for that.

Steve: We’ve had the opportunity to get exposure to different organizations.

Friends of ours are supporters of the Childhood League, so we would go their fundraising events and learn about the organization.

Amber: They help disadvantaged and disabled preschoolers get ready for kindergarten. It’s a place that is magical in that it doesn’t think about what your limits are. We’ve seen some just magical stories come out of there, too, and the results are amazing. Once they get you in the door, you’ll happily open your wallet.—PT

Why I Give:

M

y giving has evolved over time.

I give financially where I am involved and where I have a great emotional commitment. I get involved where I think I can make a difference, either in beginning something or sustaining something I think is valuable.

I have always been very interested in underserved populations. I am a great believer in leveling the playing field for all students. I have been involved in I Know I Can for 34 years—I am one of the founders, and I’m currently serving as the emeritus chairman of the board.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve been very involved in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State. I serve on several boards and was one of the co-chairs of their last campaign. I love animals, my mother loved animals; I was raised with Great Danes. With the exception of eight years, I’ve never been without a dog.

I’m also extremely committed to relationships with the students and the animals that are served by the institutions I support. I keep a relationship with many of my students. Seeing them mature and seeing them become committed citizens of Columbus is terribly important to me.—HL

’m on the board at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Our NICU unit is one of the best. Two reasons I support them: One, I’ve had employees with children who have had premature babies. And two, it’s in a neighborhood that I grew up in, Driving Park.

I’ve supported United Way throughout my banking career. I think their big issue

right now is poverty, and there’s a huge need around that. I empathize with that cause. We have folks who aren’t on our economic ladder, and I think United Way does a great job of reaching out and helping them.

The Columbus Library obviously is a place where our children go and learn, and our adults get access to the internet, and that’s a way to connect them to jobs. The library’s got a brand-new Driving Park branch right

there on Livingston Avenue, which can be seen right off the street. I made a donation there in the name of my mom and dad, who I think did a lot to raise awareness around children’s education while they were living.

haddock: I grew up in Belpre, Ohio, right along the Ohio River, and my heart remains in Appalachia in a lot of ways. Too often I quote Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” I could’ve easily been on the other side of the road, not being able to have a meaningful career and contribute to the lives of others. My mission is to give people the opportunities they need to improve their chances of succeeding.

We provide financial leadership to various organizations. We give until it hurts, but it’s not just about giving money. For Mark, he is carrying it on day-by-day, volunteering in excess of 1,000 hours a year at the National 9/11 Memorial &

Why I Give:

B

arbara: We have been so incredibly lucky in our lives. Al and I have two wonderful children who are amazing parents to two grandchildren apiece. Nine years ago, when we got our first grandchild, I thought, “What kind of a world is she being born into?”

The only way I can think to make those I love dearly safer is to make the world in which they live safer. Al and I have said we have been blessed with some prosperity, and quite frankly, what else would you do with the money than try to help other people and level the playing field?

Primarily, we want to keep that roof over these families’ heads. That is the

absolute most basic security that any family could have.

And for children to feel like that roof is going to disappear any day now—it’s just not acceptable. It’s not acceptable that any child would have to absorb that stress. Every city should have the ability to help people who have gotten behind the eight ball and help them stay self-sufficient for the rest of their lives.—JS

I

t was how I was raised.

My parents were educators, as were my grandparents, my greatgrandparents and my great-great–grandfather, so I was raised with the idea that service is what you do. I think Shirley Chisholm said, “Service is the rent we pay to live on this earth,” and that’s how I was raised. Another part of it is that I have kids.

I want their futures to be as bright as possible, and if I can help in any way, then I should do that.

And I just really enjoy the work. It’s really gratifying to work with people who are trying to change the world in positive ways, who are optimistically working toward solutions. I spend my days talking to folks like that, and it is extremely inspiring.

One of the reasons that the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation hired me is because they recognize that there is a gap in funding for social enterprises that exist in the Midwest and South.

ood business meets good causes.

That describes social enterprise, a growing sector in the entrepreneurial world where commerce and social concerns coalesce.

Central Ohio is home to more than 100 social enterprises—businesses that intentionally integrate social impact as a major component of their

business models—addressing myriad issues, including hunger, disabilities, clean water, generational poverty, human trafficking, infant mortality, employment and education.

The vehicles these enterprises use to create social impact are equally varied: fried chicken, cleaning and demolition services, coffee, dog biscuits, bicycles, jewelry and furniture stores.

When Tony Wells first tried to enter the social enterprise sector in the early- to mid-2000s, he found no traction in the budding industry. Today, “we have this huge, robust ecosystem,” says Wells, president of the Wells Foundation, which both funds and operates social enterprises in Central Ohio.

A couple of factors came into play to change

the social entrepreneurial landscape in the last decade.

One was the creation of new IRS entity structures that opened additional avenues for such businesses. Another was the vulnerability of nonprofit organizations, which saw contributions take a hit during the financial crisis, Wells says.

cates for and supports social enterprises, says corporate philanthropy has been flat since 1985 and has recently experienced a downtrend.

“The grant-dependent, not-for-profit model is not sufficient and sustainable,” he explains. “Nonprofits are realizing they can’t just hire another fundraiser.”

Social enterprise, Proctor says, is a “whole new business sector that’s willing to step up to become an extension of philanthropy and government to meet community needs. It’s another arrow in the quiver to create social impact.”

Demographics also play a part in the rise of social enterprise. Central Ohio is becoming an increasingly younger community, and “that next generation is very socially conscious,” says Wells, who teaches a course introducing social enterprise to about 2,000 Ohio State University students a year.

Proctor says people under 35 own the majority of social enterprises; most are women.

The essence of social enterprise, Proctor says, is “having everyday businesses be part of making this a better community. … Can your consumption and the way you invest your money make a difference?”

Those two areas—garnering investor support and creating a product consumers will buy—can pose significant challenges to new entrepreneurs.

“Success depends on the realization that you’re running a business based on sales. ‘Build it and they will come’ doesn’t work,” Proctor says. “It has to be twofold— people need to believe they’re getting a product they value and creating a

social impact at the same time. It’s very much a commercial decision.”

While people may want to support worthy causes through purchases, there are limits, says John Rush, owner and CEO of Clean Turn Enterprises, which encompasses three different social enterprises.

Although consumers may be willing to pay incrementally more for a cup of coffee or a painting job in order to better society, “no matter how big your heart is, you’re ultimately constrained by the cash in your wallet,” Rush says. “Consumers may jump in at the front end, but is it sustainable?”

Social enterprises often are more expensive to operate than their traditional counterparts, but the products and services they sell don’t necessarily need to cost more, Rush says. “The real factor is the business model itself. Volumes and operating margins matter in order to be able to produce

a service or product that you can price competitively.”

Social enterprises, Wells adds, “must operate like any other business, and be financially viable and sustainable.”

In his experience with funding social enterprises, Wells says none has become profitable in its first year.

“It’s usually year three, and we’re OK with that.”

On the funding side of the equation, social enterprises can appeal to investors in a variety of ways. One is the opportunity to diversify investment portfolios while having a positive impact on the community. Also, Rush says, “you’re giving to an entity that is not coming back to you for the same $50,000 every year.”

Locally, several nonprofit organizations have for-profit arms that offset losses. Proceeds from Habitat for Humanity ReStore shops help pay administrative costs. Equitas Health uses money earned from its pharmacy to support a wide range of services to the HIV-positive and LGBTQ communities.

Formerly the AIDS Resource Center of Central Ohio, Equitas has expanded in recent years to provide services that encompass medical, dental and behavioral health, as well as transportation, wellness and housing.

A federal program allows Equitas to purchase medications at a substantial discount. Equitas then can dispense those medications to those who otherwise couldn’t afford

As social enterprise grows, so does concern that the term “social enterprise” is being misused and usurped.

Wells estimates more than half of the businesses that call themselves social enterprises really aren’t.

“If you say you’re donating 10 percent of your T-shirt sales to charity, that’s not social enterprise; that’s a marketing strategy,” he explains. “The motivation must address the social challenges and needs in our community.”

Proctor says the “defining characteristics of social enterprise really are eroding.

The grayest area is, if you donate money, can you call yourself a social enterprise?

We’re probably going to have to draw a pretty bright line on that.”

to address the issue and determine if specific criteria should be set and met for a business to obtain a “social enterprise” designation.

Rush says it’s a tricky balance. “An ongoing issue is measuring outcomes.

There are some metrics, but we’re talking about humans, not just commodities. What should accountability look like?”

Achieving “B Corp.” status—a designation by the nonprofit B Lab that a for-profit business meets strict guidelines regarding its positive social and environmental impact— is not exactly the same as being recognized as a social enterprise, and also “is an onerous process.

Are we going to be in danger of over-regulation?”

Rush wonders.

Wells says in many ways, Central Ohio is ahead of the curve in the realm of social enterprise.

Business accelerators, corporate and organization support and training for nonprofits all have fostered a thriving social enterprise community.

“Every business has the opportunity to think creatively about how to use that business to create social impact,” Rush says. “A business needs to consider whether it can be intentional about using its enterprise to think outside the box.”

Leading by Example Here is a look at some established, and newer, social enterprises, and the impetus behind them.

The Wells Foundation encompasses several enterprises, including GroundWork Group, which provides technical, IT and other professional services to nonprofits.

One of its major components is fundraising.

disabilities to make and sell dog biscuits using spent grain from local breweries.

“People looked at me like I was nuts [when I first launched],” says CEO Amy Noltemeyer. “[Then] I met all these incredible people who were starting social enterprises” in the accelerator community, where she found a warm welcome. “It opened my eyes to what could be.”

Growlers rents baking time and equipment at the Food Fort nonprofit commissary—itself a social enterprise helping people start and grow food-based businesses—and sells the products at taprooms, farmers markets and local festivals.

Growlers’s workforce development camps grew from one in the first year to five this year, and other counties have expressed interest.

A $24,000 award from the SEA Change accelera-

tor program helped provide funds for packaging and the hiring of a part-time employee to oversee such functions as quality control.

Noltemeyer’s goal is to open an “opportunities kitchen” so other young adults will have similar workforce experiences.

Achieving that vision is both simple and complex, she says: “We have to sell more bones!”

The personal story: Noltemeyer, a high school teacher, was inspired to create the company after being frustrated with the lack of low-skill vocational opportunities available for her son, who is impacted by several disabilities.

When young adults with disabilities are introduced to the workplace, “the improvement in their quality of life is unreal,” she says. “You can become more than what you were before.”

Erica Mantell was entering her senior year at Ohio State when she confronted growing pain. “I started noticing these pains on my bones that felt like bruises that weren’t visible,” Erica says. “So I would call them my invisible bruises.”

Over a matter of weeks, those “invisible bruises” grew into agonizing pain. Soon, the cross-country runner couldn’t run anymore.

Eventually, it affected her ability to walk, attend class or even get out of bed.

Erica was referred to an oncologist at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Testing confirmed she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Erica’s team at the OSUCCC – James wasted no time, starting chemotherapy the day after her diagnosis.

For the 22-year-old athlete who, just months before, was preparing for final exams and medical school interviews, the physical manifestation of her treatment was jarring. But with every obstacle came the opportunity to overcome, finally culminating in Erica’s discharge from the hospital—a milestone that was quickly followed by her graduation from Ohio State.

From that moment, Erica became a cancer survivor, working every day to regain her

strength. After a bone marrow transplant, she soon started walking with regularity. By the next month, she was running again.

Each year, 72,000 adolescents and young adults (AYAs) ages 15–39 are diagnosed with cancer—the No. 1 disease killer of this age group. Philanthropy supports life-changing services and research to increase and improve survivorship for AYAs with cancer.

MISSION The Orthopedic Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of patient care and medical services throughout Central Ohio through a commitment to research, education and prevention of orthopedic and neurologic disorders.

We believe that quality medical care and service requires a scientific commitment to excellence, compassionate dedication to service and an enthusiastic willingness to teach. Research is conducted and sponsored in the fields of orthopedic surgery, neurology, spine surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS Annual Research and Education Campaign This campaign is the primary way to support our mission of improving the care of patients with orthopedic and neurologic disorders through a commitment to research, education and prevention. Your gift helps The Orthopedic Foundation fund research and educational programs that will impact the diagnosis and treatment orthopedic and neurologic problems.

Funds from the 2017 drive supported the foundation’s Summer Research Intern Program. Six medical students from Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine participated in the program, assisting with research studies in the fields of orthopedics and neurology.

Educational programs are provided for patients, physicians and healthcare providers via lectures, seminars and fellowships. Prevention programs incorporate our research and educational expertise to impact orthopedic and neurologic problems encountered within our community.

Polo Open This OrthoNeuro-sponsored event benefits The Orthopedic Foundation for Play Polo Club. The inaugural event on July 30, 2017, was attended by more than 200 people and raised more than $13,000 for the foundation’s Research & Education Fund.

GOAL The foundation aims to provide education and research opportunities to medical students and healthcare professionals to improve patient care and outcomes.
