State Treasurer Josh Mandel: Helping AUCTION Ohio’s small businesses GrowNOW Continued from page 1
GrowNOW, brought to you by State Treasurer Josh Mandel, enables small business owners to receive a 3-percent interest rate reduction on new or existing small business loans for two years with the opportunity for renewal. The program is a partnership between eligible banks and the Ohio Treasury. Small business
A closer look GrowNOW gives small business owners a 3-percent reduction on their bank loan when the loan is linked to creating or retaining jobs.
owners must commit to the creation or retention of at least one full-time job or two part-time jobs in the state of Ohio for every $50,000 borrowed up to $400,000. GrowNOW broadly serves as a catalyst for Ohio’s economic development by supporting the small businesses that drive it. How do small businesses qual-
ify? Eligible business owners must meet the following criteria: • Must be able to save or create one full-time or two parttime jobs in Ohio for every $50,000 borrowed. • Must have headquarters in Ohio. • Must have fewer than 150 employees.
Cut the tension and cut costs These are challenging times we live in. Many businesses have had to cut jobs because of the economy, and in many cases this means heavier workloads for the employees that remain.1 Pay freezes or limited wage increases can mean money is tight at home. Combined with the everyday pressures we all face, your employees could be under a great deal of stress. Workplace stress is a serious problem. Employees who are under high levels of stress, or low levels of stress for a long time, are less productive and miss more work. They express dissatisfaction with their jobs, and consume more cigarettes and alcohol. 2 A stressed employee is also more likely to suf-
fer from sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating, and more likely to be injured on the job.3 Health care costs for stressed employees are 46 percent higher than for employees who are not stressed.3 And indirect causes because of missed work and short-term disability can be even greater than the total direct costs of health care.4 High stress levels raise the risk for cardiovascular disease, suicide, substance abuse, and depression.3 To keep conflict low and productivity and morale high, take a proactive approach to dealing
with your employees’ stress levels. To deal with and prevent jobrelated stress: 1,4 • Regularly survey employees to find out their stress levels and the sources, and make sure the deadlines they’re being asked to meet are reasonable. • Provide training to management about how to recognize the signs of stress. • Create an employee assistance program (EAP) to help workers deal with stressful situations that might interfere with their work responsibilities. • Make sure your employees’ roles and responsibilities are
clearly defined, but don’t box them in. Involve your employees in the direction of the company as a whole, and provide opportunities for training and growth. • Provide opportunities for your employees to socialize together, to build rapport and relax. • Must have a majority of employees who are Ohio residents. • Must be organized for profit. • Must maintain offices and operating facilities in Ohio. Visit State Treasurer Josh Mandel’s GrowNOW website at www.GrowNOW.ohio.gov or call 1-800-228-1102, option 3, for more information.

Announcing the BWC’s new Grow Ohio Incentive Program The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) recently passed a new incentive program to attract new employers to Ohio. This program is called “The Grow Ohio Incentive Program.” If you are a brand new business in the Grove City area, or are planning to open a new business, this program may be for you. “Grow Ohio” will allow new Ohio employers to join a group rating program as soon as their policy is active with the BWC and immediately receive the maximum workers’ compensation premium discount (currently 51 percent) throughout their first year. The incentive discount will apply to new employers (who meet the criteria) retroactively to July 1, 2011. Should a new employer choose not to enroll into a group rating plan, a 25-percent discount will be applied to the new employer’s premium rate. CareWorks Consultants will work to ensure the program is successfully implemented for as many new Ohio businesses as
possible. If your business is new after July 1, 2011, and not currently participating in a group rating program, we encourage you to contact our representative at CareWorks Consultants, Theresa Passwater, at 800-837-3200, ext. 7248, to learn more about the program. Caring for five residents with a matching staff of five plus Kellie, Serenity House works diligently to help the residents feel right at home. Fire Systems Professionals help protect buildings Fire Systems Professionals (FSP), based out of Grove City, is committed to keeping buildings up to Ohio’s federal and local fire codes. FSP’s client base contains businesses that need service on fire alarm security and access control, all types of fire systems, sprinklers and more. Having branched off from Electrical Service Professionals in 2005, FSP started with only three
employees and has grown to 12 since then. The small number of employees has helped them to remain focused on important business basics. When talking with John McNamee, FSP service manager, he spoke highly of the family-owned atmosphere. This helps them to focus on their clients and remain focused on things that matter. Long Term Care Awareness Month: A great time to seek advice and plan The month of November has been declared Long Term Care Awareness Month by the American Association of Long Term Care Insurance. On a related note, November is National Family
Caregivers Month. But once care giving services are needed, it is probably too late to purchase long term care insurance. This insurance is one of the most important ways to plan for possible future
care. Traditional health insurance isn’t designed to cover long term care and many Americans may need long term care at some point See LONG TERM, page 11

Why you should be a member LONG TERM CARE AWARENESS MONTH of your Chamber of Commerce Continued from page 10
Are you a member of your local Chamber of Commerce? If not, you should be. In case you think I’m being nosy and/or presumptuous, I’ve been a member of mine since 1977. Community growth only happens when constituent groups such as business, politics, education, the arts, sports, neighborhoods, etc. have a place to state their interests, work out their differences and pull together for the common good. Your local Chamber of Commerce is the only organization in your community that can create the venue where discussions can
be conducted that cut across all of the emotional and ideological boundaries that get erected over time in a community. “What’s the Chamber ever done for me?” you might ask. Well, the Chamber IS you. Your local Chamber isn’t part of the local government; it’s a private nonprofit organization nurtured by local leaders, just like you. There are hired Chamber professionals who staff the office and coordinate the work, but most of what happens in your Chamber is attributed to a local citizen who volunteers to help the Chamber —
and, therefore the community and marketplace — be all it can be. To paraphrase a great American, ask not what your Chamber can do for you, but rather, what you can do for your Chamber. I believe being a Chamber member is the most important investment I make in my community. And as far as the financial commitment is concerned, I think you’ll be surprised, maybe shocked at how small it is. — Reprinted courtesy of Jim Blasingame, editor and writer of The Small Business Advocate Newsletter.
in their lives. Medicare wasn’t designed to adequately cover long term care costs. Since many Americans do not yet own long term care insurance, the burden of care giving often falls upon unpaid family caregivers. Although all long term care needs, by definition, last more than 90 days, many people need help for much longer, sometimes for years. This can be a significant physical, financial and emotional burden for family caregivers. In an effort to encourage Americans to prepare for their future long term care needs, the month reminds all of the importance of this planning. While most people
don’t like to think of this aspect of retirement planning, it is just as important as drafting a will or saving for reGRANT tirement. Consider MILLER these facts: • Long term care insurance is the only type of insurance primarily designed to pay for long term care. • Comprehensive policies from leading insurers can be affordable. The federal government and many states offer tax incentives to make the insurance even more attractive. (Speak with your tax advisor.) • Time is the enemy when it comes to long term care planning,
because every year that someone delays the purchase of long term care insurance, the premium generally increases. • A change in health can make it impossible to qualify for long term care insurance. Perhaps you should schedule a meeting with an agent or advisor who specializes in long term care insurance to see what makes the most sense for you.
