Grove City Chamber to host 32nd Arts in the Alley The 32nd Annual Arts in the Alley Music and Arts Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.

17, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, in Grove City’s Historic Town Center.

Parking and admission are free.

Hosted by the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, more than 100 juried exhibitors will display and sell fine art, photography, jewelry, crafts, fabric art, glasswork, pottery and wood creations.

Many of these exhibitors will be returning to Arts in the Alley from previous years, but there will also be a lot of first time artists.

A variety of musical entertainment will also be featured throughout the weekend on several stages.

The festival will begin with the Arts in the Alley Parade hosted by the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Grove City Girls’ Club at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept.

17.

The parade will begin on Southwest Boulevard, go south on Broadway, east on Columbus Street and disperse at Park Street Intermediate School.

Artists will participate in a number of shows: the Craft Show, Fine Arts Show, Youth Art Show, Quilt Show and Photography Show. Each show has its

own rules and awards.

T h e awards include the prestigious Grove City Easel Award, the annual art award for the City of Grove City’s permanent art collection.

Children can create free, makeand-take arts and crafts at Kids’ Fun Street. Focus on business

Haircuts, perms and massages done all under one roof Michael’s Salon is situated in what used to be a home that was built in 1926.

In January of 2000, Michael and Connie Tiller purchased the property that is now Michael’s Salon at 4328 South Broadway. Connie has been a stylist for 44 years. She feels Grove City is a wonderful place to raise a family and start a business. Through her commitment to Grove City as a small-business owner, she hopes that others will see the importance of supporting our downtown.

Michael’s Salon also has four other stylists who are very talented: Clay Evans, Catrina Yates, Sherry Pack and Diane Woodring. Color and cuts are their specialty, but they also specialize in perms and waxing. They have a very relaxed atmosphere, which helps complete their mission of pleasing their clients. Men, women and children are welcome.

Peaceful Moment Message has also relocated from downtown Grove City to Michael’s Salon. Carol Myers, the massage therapist, will also be offering facials and waxing starting in September. Carol occupies the upper level of Michael’s.

Youth Hoops off Broadway is another success The Grove City Chamber of Commerce hosted its third annual Hoops Off Broadway, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, on Saturday, July 16, in the Grove City Town Center.

Youth teams from throughout the local community took part in this tournament benefiting the American Red Cross, the Grove City Greyhounds Basketball Team and the Grove City Chamber of Commerce.

This double elimination tournament featured about 45 teams of boys and girls separated into eight divisions. The first- and second-place winners from each division received medals to celebrate their achievements. To recognize their involvement in the event, each player participating in the tournament received a T-shirt and a book bag. The tournament lasted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event also featured a free throw contest with local area businesses. The contest was split between four courts of five people on each. The winner was Roger Deerwester, shooting for Citizen's Bank with four out of five shots made. The Chamber had more than 20 local businesses participate.

Focus on business

Primrose School is community leader, focused on education The Primrose School at Pinnacle started in December of 2009 by owner Natosha Eskander. It is an educational child care center and private preschool for children 6 weeks of age to 12 years old, through various programs.

Before owning Primrose School at Pinnacle, Natosha worked as assistant director of pharmacy at OSU Medical Center.

She bought this Primrose School because she wanted more for her children and their development. She also wanted to make sure that other parents will have the same opportunity to help their kids grow.

She has three children of her own enrolled in programs in the school and has seen the great growth of them herself.

Mrs. King, the director of the school, also has a daughter en-

rolled. They both believe in what the school does for children.

There are many reasons to bring a business to Grove City; from the community’s quickly growing population to the need for a certain type of business.

Luckily for Mrs. Eskander, the

location of the school had already started being developed.

Education is the focus at this facility; the school has an accredited curriculum and provides a balanced approach to school readiness.

It is, however, more than an educational child care center. Some of its biggest successes in its short history are from the community events that it holds. Last year, their Spring Fling brought in more than $2,400 for the Grove City Relay for Life and Reach Out and Read.

Their food drive was another great success as it brought in 3,775 pounds of food for the MidOhio Food Bank.

Make your grass greener with fall lawn care

Fall is almost perfect because cooler temperatures and sufficient rainfall (usually), coupled with warm soil, helps seed to sprout more readily than in spring.

The Garden Café just recently had their grand re-opening on July 14. They served wine, beer, food and drew in about 60 people into the café.

Carol continually thanks the support of the community.

Chamber auction to help fund student’s college dreams The Grove City Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Chamber Auction on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 6 to 10:30 p.m.

The event will be at the beautiful Pinnacle Golf Club, 1500 Pinnacle Drive, Grove City.

More than 200 people take part in this catered event each year.

Last year, the Thanksgivingthemed auction was a great success with live music and an auction experience for a great cause.

This year will differ from the last in theme and items.

The theme this year is Christmas and Making a Difference.

Some item categories up for bid include trips, shows and restaurants.

Some of the proceeds of the auction will benefit graduating students from South-Western City Schools and some will benefit the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Roth IRA: A wealth-building tool for the middle class

By ALLEN HOUK Do you have a Roth IRA? If not, you probably should.

The Roth IRA could possibly be the single most important wealth-building tool for the middle class, although it is also the most misunderstood.

The tax benefit of the Roth IRA is that all the earnings (interest, dividends, capital gains) and principal will be tax-free when with-

drawn. The earnings of a traditional IRAare tax-deferred, meaning you or your heirs will pay taxes on the earnings and principal when withdrawn.

Roth IRAs do not have a withdrawal requirement, unlike traditional IRAs which force withdrawals to begin after reaching age 70 1/2. Any IRA can incur taxes or penalties if withdrawn prior to age 59 1/2. You should consult with a Certified Public Accoun-

tant (CPA) regarding tax consequences prior to a withdrawal from any IRA. For tax year 2011, you may be eligible for a contribution to a Roth IRA if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is less than $ 107,000 for individuals and $ 169,000 for joint filers. Roth IRA: A wealth-building tool for the middle class

New businesses are coming to Grove City • Panera Bread will be coming to Grove City in the fall of this year. The restaurant is set to be filling the space that was formerly occupied by Cici's Pizza at 1786 Stringtown Road.

Panera was issued a permit by the city zoning division and will start construction soon.

Panera is yet another business that has seen the growth and growth potential of Grove City and has chosen this area to open a new store.

This restaurant will bring a great place to eat bread, soup and salad among other delicious foods.

• Express Point is an electronics repair and logistics company with headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The plan is for Express Point to fill a 78,000square-foot space in a warehouse at 5701 North Meadows Drive.

On Monday, July 18, Grove City Council voted to approve tax incentives

to bring the company to Grove City. This was after working closely with the Columbus 2020 project to get the company to at least set up shop in Columbus.

With the help of Columbus 2020, the City Council turned a deal that was falling apart in another section of Columbus into a big gain for Grove City. The turnaround for the deal was less than a week from the Council vote.

The deal stipulates that Express Point has to stay in Grove City for at least seven years. For the first five years, Grove City has agreed to give the company $30,000 while the City will collect and keep $110,000 in new tax revenue. The tax incentives only kick in for the company as long as it keeps an annual payroll of more than $1 million.

• Mount Carmel has made plans to develop a healthcare complex with a freestanding emergency care center in

Grove City. Grove City and the surrounding area is one of the fastest growing communities in central Ohio. The community has an increasing need for quicker access to emergency care and more convenient access to other healthcare services, Mount Carmel has decided to expand its services in the area.

The emergency center is the focal point of the 112 acres at I-71 and state Route 665, which also includes a mix of medical services within the facility. Canal Winchester's Diley Ridge Medical Center is very similar to what the facility in Grove City will be. It is expected to open in late 2012 or early 2013.

• City Barbeque will be coming to Grove City in the near future. At the July 25 zoning committee meeting, the restaurant was approved to come to the city.

After a 21-day waiting period, City Barbeque can start the process of moving in near Donatos Pizza on Stringtown Road.

If you meet the income requirements, then you can contribute up to $ 5,000 per year if you are under age 50 and up to $ 6,000 per year at age 50 and over.

These annual limits apply to all of your IRAaccounts in total, not each IRAindividually. You may also contribute to a Roth IRA after age 70 1/2, which is not the case with Traditional IRAs. Many investment managers encourage you to make your IRA contributions early in the year to take advantage of earnings growth; however, few investment managers actually take the time to determine your eligibility for IRAs. In addition, investment managers should never give tax advice. To make the proper decision regarding contributions to any IRA, you should

obtain all the facts (eligibility, contribution limits, tax calculations, filing status) by consulting with a CPA. I advise my clients to wait Allen Houk until after yearend to make the decisions regarding contributions. However, don’t wait too long as the contributions must be made by the original tax filing deadline without extensions (April 15).

Once you have made your contribution to the Roth IRA account, your investment advisor should provide you with the best options for investing based upon factors such as age, other investments, marital status and retirement goals.

Employers feel the pinch when employees skip shots Routine childhood vaccination programs for every baby born in the United States this year would save nearly $10 billion in medical costs, and $43 billion in societal 1 costs like lost productivity.

But vaccinations aren’t just for kids. Your employees might need to review their vaccination histories, as well. Some may have never been vaccinated as children, or they might have missed vital booster shots. Others might have missed vaccines that have been developed more recently, like those for chicken pox and human papilloma virus (HPV). Finally, immunity can fade over time, leaving people vulnerable to diseases that can be mild in children but severe in adults.2 Aside from childhood diseases, annual seasonal influenza vaccines could eliminate more than $10 billion in lost productivity due to the flu.3 U.S. employers could save $237 per employee vaccinated against

seasonal influenza.4 According to the National Business Group on Health, employees that have been vaccinated have:5 • 13 percent to 44 percent fewer doctor or hospital visits.

• 18 percent to 45 percent fewer lost workdays.

• 18 percent to 28 percent fewer work days of reduced productivity.
