Farmers’ Market will return to Town Center June 30 Once again the Grove City Farmers’ Market draws hundreds to the historic town center in search of fresh fruits and vegetables. The Farmers’ Market has a record amount of vendors this year bringing with them varieties of locally-grown food.

From juicy peaches to homemade jellies, baked goods to fresh-picked tomatoes and corn on the cob, the Farmers’ Market will make it easy to buy local this summer.

Beginning on June 30 and running through September 8, The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce will continue its 23-year tradition of presenting the best of summer’s harvest to the Grove City community.

This year more than 40 vendors will participate from 8 a.m. until noon every Saturday for ten weeks, rain or shine. The Market will operate along Broadway and Park Streets.

In addition, the Chamber will host a free Family Fun Day on July 21 behind City Hall, 4035 Broadway, from 8 a.m. until noon. Families can shop

the Farmers’ Market and then enjoy live entertainment, balloon creations, inflatable toys, face painting and other family-friendly outdoor activities.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for families in the community to come

together and enjoy a beautiful summer day. Area businesses will have the chance to provide free, fun-filled family activities and promote their business and the services they provide.

Another successful Job Fair

The City of Grove City and the Grove City Area Chamber brought another successful Job Fair to Grove City job seekers at the St. John’s Lutheran Church on Columbus St., May 24. The Job Fair brought in several employers and distributors looking for hard-working, potential employees.

More than 40 employers with staffing needs showed up to meet with job seekers along with colleges promoting further education and workshops that helped build resumes and provided employability tips.

One of the more notable presences at the Job Fair was Scioto Downs, hiring new employees for their just-finished addition to the horse track. Kaplan College, Columbus State and Harrison College were there promoting higher education. Several Grove City residents were hired or scored an interview with high ranking companies.

Over forty employers were present at the Grove City Job Fair on May 24.

Treasurer Mandel launches program for small businesses Reducing the cost of small business and improving energy performance Small businesses are faced with numerous challenges in today’s economy. State Treasurer of Ohio Josh Mandel continues to support small business owners through an additional linked deposit program – ReEnergize Ohio. ReEnergize Ohio offers up to a 3% interest rate reduction on new or existing

small business loans when at least 50% of the loan proceeds are used to implement energy-efficient upgrades. Small businesses may apply the interest rate reduction on up to $550,000 of the loan amount for a term of four years.

Last year, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) tried something new at the Ohio State Fair: We hosted a job fair right at the ODJFS booth in the Marketplace Building (also known as the Bricker Building). This first-of-its-kind job fair was extremely successful. Participating employers had the opportunity to interact with visitors to the booth, invite those interested to fill out job applications on the spot, and even interview candidates’ right at the fair. The result was several filled positions, happy employers and grateful new hires.

Based on this success, we have decided to expand the State Fair Job Fair this year.

We will be hosting the event for all 12 days of the fair and are inviting employers to sign up now. Two four-hour blocks of time are available each day from July 25 through August 5. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, and urge you to act quickly before all spots are filled!

Having a presence at the State Fair has several benefits for employers: • For absolutely no cost to you, your job openings will be advertised all 12 days of the fair.

• ODJFS will actively market the job fair, both before and during the State Fair.

3 on 3 Basketball celebrates ‘hoop action’ and community spirit

The Southwestern Community Leadership Class hosted the fourth annual Hoops Off Broadway, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, presented by Wal-Mart, Saturday, June 2.

This year’s Hoops Off Broadway was played as a playground style tournament for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17, in the Grove City Town Center. This tournament encourages interaction between young people and adults, while raising funds to support the Grove City

Food Pantry and Grove City Upwards Sports. This year, we had 21 teams participate on 3 courts. The basketballs started flying around 9 a.m. and didn’t stop until 1:30 p.m.

The Grove City youth brought lots of skill, but ultimately one team came out of each division! The basketball event, held by the Southwestern Community Leadership program, raised around $3,600! All the profits went to the charities listed above.

The tournament would

not have been successful without the continuous support of the community as well as the volunteers who helped work the tournament. The Leadership Class cannot thank the volunteers enough for their time and dedication in the planning and implementation of the event. We would also like to extend out tremendous gratitude to Calvin Green at the Grove City Church of the Nazarene who provided us with the basketball hoops this year. A special thank

Congrats to our Southwest Leadership Graduates!

Through this program we help create an experience of relationship building, learning civic engagement, problem solving and personal growth that few other programs match. The nine month program gives participants the tools they need to become leaders in our community. During the program, participants are asked to name a leader among them and pick an event to organize. This year’s event was the Youth Hoops off Broadway, 3x3 Basketball Tournament! It provided a way for kids to stay active while having good clean fun! The Class raised and donated $3,639.84 from the 3x3 proceeds to the Grove City Food Pantry and to the Grove City Upwards Sports. There were two awards given at this year’s graduation. Chief Lloyd Sheets presented the Veronica L. Sheets Southwest Community Leadership Award to Tim Helsel. This award is voted on by the Leadership Class for the Outstanding Leader. The Award of Excellence was given to Chris Thompson.
