Chamber welcomes newest board members The Grove City Chamber of Commerce’s newest board members are Tricia Zelenak of Monterey Care Center and Christopher Love of Southwest Chiropractic. Tricia Zelenak is the community relations director for Monterey Care Center located at 3929 Hoover Road in Grove City. She is responsible for creating and implementing strategic marketing action plans, building and maintaining business and community relationships, and sponsoring events both in the center and the community with the goal of maintaining a quality reputation with the community and sharing Monterey’s services and high quality care measures. Zelenak accepted her position in September of 2006 and shortly after moved to Grove City because she states she fell in love with the people of Grove City and appreciated working for a community that unconventionally cares about the work home life balance of its employees. This is important because she is married and has two beautiful daughters ages 6 and 3 that are now students at Buckeye Woods Elementary School.

She became involved in the Chamber through John Dunn, COO of The Macintosh Company, which is Monterey’s parent company headquartered in Hilliard. Dunn lives in Grove City and is a recent past president of The Grove City Chamber of Commerce. Zelenak says, “John’s passion for the Chamber and sincere interest in giving back to the community that we serve is contagious. I started my involvement with the Chamber by sponsoring events such as Arts in the Alley and the Grove City Business Expo.” Zelenak says, “As a board member, I
hope to engage and interact with other business leaders in the community to promote the mission of the Grove City Chamber of Commerce. I just started a Master’s in marketing and communications at Franklin University. I hope to use this knowledge and marketing best practices to better serve both Monterey and the Chamber of Commerce’s mission to serve the community that we are both integrally involved.” When asked what would she like to see the Chamber do to improve the quality of Business in Grove City, Zelenak said, “Promote local buying power! We live in such a close-knit community that we should be serving each other’s business interests before looking outside of our immediate community. While technology allows us the ability to buy a product from another community, state or country it is important to look first in our own community to see if that product or service is available at possibly a competitive price and/or higher quality.” Christopher Love owns and operates Southwest Chiropractic located at 3009 Columbus Street in Grove City. Love has one associate, Dr. Monica Seimer, D.C.
Visitors, convention bureau names new board members Rick Louder, general manager at O’Charley’s in Grove City, has been re-elected president of the Grove City Area Visitors and Convention Bureau. Louder also serves as a member of the Chamber’s Executive Committee. Karen Dover has assumed the
position of Visitors Bureau vice president, Mike Uhrin is the new secretary and John Johnston was re-elected treasurer. New trustees for 2012 include Chris Fulton and Warren Gard. Fulton replaces Steve Bowshier, who was term limited after serving nine consecutive years; Gard
replaces Dave Bright, who also served as a trustee for nine consecutive years. Both Bowshier and Bright served as president of the organization. Both Gard and Fulton are no newcomers to the Visitors Bureau; See VISITORS, page 2

His office specializes in gentle techniques and treats patients from pediatric to geriatric, including expectant mothers and newborns. He has extensively trained in all phases of chiropractic, from education to technique to case management. Love attended Ohio University and graduated with honors from the Palmer College of Chiropractic, located in Iowa, where he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Love says, “My concern for your health is priority number one, by providing gentle techniques to help your body func-
tion at maximum potential.” Love is dedicated to sharing the philosophy of chiropractic care as a way of life for you and your family. Love grew up in Pickaway County, and has practiced in Grove City since 2006. He became involved in the Chamber through business networking and other civil service clubs. Love said he joined the Chamber was because he wanted to be involved with other Grove City business and continue the growth of small business in Grove City. When asked, “What would you like to see the Chamber do to improve the quality of business in Grove City?” Love responded by saying, “To initiate a small business ‘Quick-Start’ program, which would include a step-by-step plan for the new business owner to follow. It would be geared to help them avoid common pitfalls and keep them from trying to reinvent the wheel.” Love also said, “I have learned the more you know, the more you see. By increasing my knowledge of businesses in Grove City, I hope to open my own business to more people because life is great … chiropractic care makes it better!”

Visitors, convention bureau names new board members Continued from page 1 both served previously. The primary function of the Visitors Bureau is to market Grove City as a lodging destination for Central Ohio and promote local events held in the city. Bringing visitors into the city provides income not only for hotels but also helps support restaurants, entertainment enterprises, service businesses and retailers. Marketing is supported by a bed tax that visitors pay at the hotels. No local taxes are used to
support the marketing efforts of the Visitors Bureau. The bureau also operates the Grove City Welcome Center, 3378 Park St., a place where vacation ideas and 154 different pieces of Ohio tourism literature are available. The Visitors Bureau coordinates exhibits with the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society and the City of Grove City in the operation of the museum. The local museum will feature a Coke exhibit during January and February. The Welcome Center and Museum are free services.

Congress makes tax planning difficult

Our leadership in Congress once again has failed to provide tax planning professionals with the ability to develop a longterm strategy for our clients. They have been so inept at their jobs that they have extended the employee Social Security reduction of 2 percent to a rate of 4.2 percent for two months; I wish someone had told them that the federal payroll tax form 941 covers a threemonth period and I doubt that the Internal Revenue Service will revise the form to be filed by April 30, 2012, to accommodate two different withholding rates. The following is a partial list of tax issues: • For 2012, the federal tax rate for dividends and capital gains will remain at 15 percent. These advantageous rates for
capital gains will increase to 20 percent and dividend income will not be given pref- Allen Houk erential treatment in 2013 if Congress does nothing during 2012 (Why would they start now?) • The 401(k) deferral limit increases to $ 17,000 for 2012 with an additional amount allowed to those over 50 of $5,500. The 2012 IRA contribution limit remains at $ 5,000 with an additional amount of $1,000 for those over age 50. Boost productivity and save money Congress makes tax Excel and PowerPoint classes are offered Your Grove City Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Harrison College will host a series of Microsoft Office 2010 Workshops designed to enhance office productivity. The PowerPoint workshop is for individuals who have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft 2007 or 2010 products. The Advanced Excel Workshop is for individuals who already have a basic understanding of Excel and are looking to expand their current knowledge of the software.
Microsoft 2010 will be used in both workshops. Reserve your spot now as classes are limited to 20 participants. The cost is $60 to attend both workshops and $30 to attend individual workshop. The Advanced Excel session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 25. In this workshop, attendees will learn: using auto filter and advanced filter, filtering for unique records, building reports from data using pivot tables, and functions and equations. These possible changes will provide opportunities to consider taking income in 2012 and deferring deductions until 2013. • The Obama Health Care Reform law imposes a Medicare Surtax of 3.8 percent on investment/passive income earned in 2013 for those with Adjusted Gross Income of greater than $200,000. This is a good time to make an appointment with
your investment adviser to review strategies for your taxable investments during 2012. • The medical deduction floor increases from 7.5 percent to 10 percent in 2013. Incurring elective medical expenses in 2012 may provide a tax advantage rather than waiting for 2013. As you are in the process of gathering tax documentation for 2011, you should consider making notes of any changes that could affect your financial horizon such as retirement, marital status, the birth of a child, and college expenses to be incurred in 2012. SWCS places bond issue on ballot The South-Western City (SWCS) District is hoping it will be able to take advantage of $120 million from the state of Ohio to help build 13 replacement elementary schools, renovate two elementary schools, and build a new Franklin Heights High School. On Nov. 28, the SWCS Board of Education voted to place a “no new millage” bond issue, Issue 8, on the March 6 ballot for school facilities. As a result of retiring debt, Issue 8 would allow the district to do this while keeping current collection rates at or below 2012 collection levels. The state, through the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC), will contribute $120 million of the funds toward the project if Issue 8 passes to fund the district’s local share. The OSFC construction project would eliminate disparities in elementary buildings across the district, wipe the slate
clean on millions of dollars in maintenance costs for the aging facilities, and provide up-to-date educational technology, learning environments and resources that today’s students need. It will also provide space for optional all-day, everyday kindergarten. SWCS officials said that building replacement and renovated schools would help shave the growing maintenance costs of aging facilities and free-up those funds for use to benefit students and other building needs across the district. Currently, the district has about $40 million in deferred maintenance costs associated with the buildings to be replaced. Many of those buildings have obsolete electrical systems that cannot support modern educational technology and inefficient heating and ventilation systems that make it difficult to regulate air quality and temperatures throughout the buildings.
Antiquated security systems and inadequate handicap accessibility limit the district’s ability to provide the necessary safety features for students and staff in today’s world. In addition, the aging schools often have power outages, frozen pipes and other building failures that distract students and hamper learning. All of the state funds and bond issue funds would be used for new facilities, building renovations and other permanent improvements.
