Tournament Director’s Welcome to the 34th Alumni Tournament and 2016 Homecoming Celebration Summer softball classic… all-Grove City High School reunion… Grove City community tradition… all of which are apt descriptions for our Alumni Tournament—easily understood if you’ve experienced it, but almost impossible to explain to those who haven’t.

What has kept GC grads and fans coming back for over three decades on the last full weekend in July for a softball tournament?

Maybe, it’s the opportunity for teammates—from Grove City’s tradition-rich baseball and softball programs—to compete again in a fierce, but friendly competition between friends, siblings and even parents and their adult sons and daughters.

Or maybe more importantly, it’s a widely anticipated homecoming weekend for GC alum to spend time with high school buddies at the pub, downtown Homecoming Celebration, ballpark or backyard cookout.

• A Gulf War veteran said thinking about coming home to play in the Alumni Tournament was what kept her going in the desert heat.

• An Air Force officer stationed in Spain flew home for Alumni weekend.

• A bride-to-be called to confirm tournament dates because she was convinced her friends wouldn’t attend her wedding if there was a conflict between her big day and the tournament.

• The class of ’71 placed their fallen third baseman’s glove on the fence close to third base—where a great defensive play for the final out saved a championship. And grown men teared up when they gave the trophy to his still grieving parents.

• When a dust devil started spinning in the dirt infield, the class of ’76 instinctively sensed it was their recently deceased teammate’s rallying roar, “let’s go girls” – sparking a late inning comeback and another championship.

It has been my honor to lead The Alumni Tournament since its inception in 1983. But the time has come for me to assume a (yet-to-be-determined) different role. And

The tradition continues at the Grove City Homecoming Celebration Grove City’s 27th annual Homecoming Celebration is the gathering place for Grove City High School alumni and the Grove City community to come together and reminisce with friends and neighbors from 6 to 10 p.m., Friday, July 29 in historic Grove City Town Center.

Live entertainment features The Reganonmics from 7 to 10 p.m., with a mix of favorites from the 1980s. The annual Homecoming Hall of Fame induction ceremony, by tournament founder Steve Carr, occurs during the band’s intermission.

“Grove City is proud to welcome friends and families who gather each year for this annual reunion,” said Mayor Richard L. “Ike” Stage. “Even with the growth of our community, we maintain the small town charm that is part of this weekend celebration.”

Several Grove City community groups provide a variety of concessions during the event.

The annual Cornhole Tournament, sponsored by Grove City Tomorrow is from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring a firstplace prize of $300 and $100 for second place. Registration is $50 per two-person team; forms are online at GroveCityOhio.gov or available for pick up at City Hall, 4035 Broadway, or Parker’s Tavern, 3998 Broadway.

Broadway will be closed from Grant Street to Grove City Road. Park Street will be closed from the City Hall driveway to First Street. All streets will close at 2 p.m. and reopen by 11 p.m.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Grove City High School Alumni Softball Tournament, often billed as the largest alumni softball tournament in the world.

GCHS adds 11 members to Athletic Hall of Fame Eleven more members will be added to the Grove City High School Athletic Hall of Fame this fall during an induction ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 25. Four Park Street Era athletes will join seven from the Hoover Road Era this year, including four female athletes. These athletes were record-setters, all-league, all-district and/or all-state honorees including state champions from individual sports.

Additionally, the first Hall of Fame Team, the 1983 Softball State Champions will be inducted during a ceremony on Friday, July 29 during the Annual Homecoming Celebration in the Town Center. The first Career Alumni Achievement Award Winner, Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner (1976), will also be recognized as the first Grove City High School (2) distinguished alumnus The first Hall of Fame Team, the 1983 Softball for his lifetime career State Champions will be inducted Friday, July 29 achievements. during the Homecoming Celebration.

I didn’t grow up here. My husband (Scott Duff 88B) has always played and loves Alumni weekend. I never really understood it; I had better things to do with a whole weekend.

One of the first years after we were married, I took the kids to Sea World on Alumni weekend.

And 88B won it all that year‌Oops!

So after that, I’ve tried to be the dutiful wife and spend the last weekend in July supporting my husband and his team. I’ve met some awesome people along the way and had fun doing it.

This year was different, my son is now a GC Alumni (Ryan Barbari, ‘12B). And my husband’s team got to play my son’s team. It was awesome—it should’ve been the championship game!

The game was neck and neck the whole time for 10 innings. No one expected the old guys to do that well. But they proved they still have it in them and had fun showing the young guys their skills.

The pitchers on both teams were father and son (Ray and Brendan Radel.)

2012 finally pulled out the win and ended up coming in 4th place.

This game showed me what Alumni is all about.

I’ve finally learned and I’m hooked.
