Join The Taste of Grove City and Business Expo Over 1,000 attended in 2011 As March arrives, thoughts turn to spring … and the Taste of Grove City and Business Expo.

The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the return of the Taste of Grove City and Business Expo on March 21.

The Taste will be held at the SouthWestern Career Academy (4750 Big Run South Road) from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public with a $5 admission fee with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Grove City Food Pantry and Emergency Services.

In the past, the Chamber has had great success and has donated more than $2,000 to the Grove City Food Pantry.

During the Taste of Grove City and Business Expo, businesses are showcased and their products are featured.

This is a great event that only happens once a year.

Community members flock to experience what the local businesses and restaurants have to offer.

“The Taste of Grove City and Business Expo is a win-win for business owners and the community.” said Bill Diehl, Executive Director of the Chamber. “It gives local businesses access to a diverse segment of the consumer public, and patrons an opportunity to experience what Grove City has to offer.”

The Taste of Grove City is a great way for community members to receive the opportunity to sample a wide variety of local businesses in one location.

Chamber launches new website The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce has launched a new and improved website.

The website offers various tabs for searching that include current events, upcoming events and a member search.

The website also includes a business directory which lists each business involved in the Chamber.

Regarding membership, viewers of the website will find a membership application for the

Chamber, member benefits, a member event calendar and also job postings.

New members to the Chamber are on a constant scroll featured on the page, so that everyone is informed on the new additions.

Another excellent feature of the new website is weekly updates for Business of the Week.

A new business is featured and gives the audience a quick introduction video and some in-

formation on the business.

Also available is the current issue of Business Monthly and past issues. The website features a full board of directors listing, which includes full contact information.

The new Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce website is another outstanding way to keep updated with news and the current businesses in Grove City.

Recipe Yield 1 - 9x13 inch pan Ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups white sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 lemons, juiced Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. In a medium bowl, blend together softened butter, 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup sugar. Press into the bottom of an ungreased 9x13 inch pan.

3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until firm and golden. In another bowl, whisk together the remaining 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1/4 cup flour. Whisk in the eggs and lemon juice. Pour over the baked crust.

4. Bake for an additional 20 minutes in the preheated oven. The bars will firm up as they cool. For a festive tray, make another pan using limes instead of lemons and adding a drop of green food coloring to give a very pale green. After both pans have cooled, cut into uniform 2 inch squares and arrange in a checker board fashion.

Successful goal setting Operation CPA: Helping those who serve I have found that for a goal to be achieved, it needs to be WHY SMART. WHY SMART is an acronym for the characteristics of an effectively-stated goal: Written, Harmonious, Yours, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistically high, and Time-bound.

Let me explain each elements.

Written: Studies have shown that people are more lik ely to achieve written goals, especially if they are reviewed regularly.

Harmonious: Goals are most likely to be achieved if they are harmonious with other goals that we have, and in accordance with our values and beliefs.

Yours: If a goal is something that somebody else wants, but it is not important to us, we won’t achieve it. Other people can suggest goals, but until we truly embrace the goal, it is not ours. We are most likely to achieve a goal we have set for ourselves.

Specific: Goals need to be stated in a positive and clear way. For instance, having a goal to “not be so out of shape”is a goal stated in

a negative and fuzzy way. A better way of stating the goal would be to say “I will engage David Smith in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise four times a week.”

Measurable: In order to achieve a goal, we must be able to measure it. A goal of having a better relationship with our children is hard to measure. A goal of spending five hours a week one-on-one with our child, doing something we both enjoy, is measurable.

Attainable: Some people make the mistake of setting an overlyambitious goal they have little chance of achieving. This is an selfdefeating exercise. Don’t do it.

Realistically high: On the flip side, some people set goals that are too easily achieved. It is best to set goals that are attainable,but stretches us to reach them.This is the key to achieving personal growth.

Ohio Safety Congress registration now open

Registration is open for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) 2012 Safety Congress and Expo (OSC12), the largest and longest-running occupational safety, health and workers’compensation conference in Ohio.

Charter Chamber member retires CEO Larry Waller leaves legacy of achievement, dedication

By Mark Dubovec When Larry Waller started his own business in 1969, the firm consisted of one employee and one client. Waller became a chamber member in 1978.

By the time he stepped down as chief executive officer of Waller Financial Services in November 2011, the company had grown to have offices in Columbus and Florida with more than 330 clients in 22 states. The Columbus offices are located on Chatham Lance near Upper Arlington.

“That (first) client remains a client,” Waller said.

“We’ve been able to provide our clients comprehensive service with a team approach.”

Waller now resides in Naples, Fla., but still owns the Grove City home he and his late wife Linda built more than 40 years ago. They had five children and 13 grandchildren.

During his career, Waller has

received a number of awards and honors, including the 2005 Leave A Legacy Award presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2010 he was named one of the nation’s Top 100 Independent Financial Advisers by Registered Rep. Magazine.

“What we’ve learned is if you always tell clients the truth and in doing that earn their trust, you will be successful,” Waller said.

In more than 40 years in financial planning, Waller said the industry has grown in scope and complexity. “There was no financial planning in 1969,” Waller said.

“Clients wanted something more than a product. They wanted a service.”

Although retired as the CEO, Waller remains at the firm as a consultant. Waller Financial is run by equity partners Charles Kerwood, Jason Eliason, Jason Farris and Christopher Olsgard – all of them longtime employees who got their start in the industry at the

firm, Waller said. “They rose to the occasion. That made it a lot easier to retire.”

Waller said the company is about preparing for the future, whether it be for the clients, employees or the community.

Waller said he also intends to continue for the company’s philanthropic efforts. According to Waller Financial, the firm has worked with its clients to donate $60 million to different charitable organizations in central Ohio.

“We’ve been blessed to work in Columbus,” Waller said.“Our clients have inspired to do more.”

The firm also honors those clients who give back to the community with the company Odysseus Awards.

The leadership at Waller Financial said they plan to carry on their founder’s legacy and philosophy. “Larry built the firm on integrity and trust,” Eliason said.

“If something does not benefit the client, we aren’t going to do it.”
