Interest in annual parade already starting to bloom

By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com With frigid temperatures and lots of snow this winter, Dublin is expecting cabin fever to bring record numbers to its St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade.

The March 15 parade, themed “The Greenest, Grandest Parade,” accepted entries through Feb. 28. Many submitted applications to join.

The parade, which will start at Metro Center at 11 a.m. March 16 and follow Bridge Street into Historic Dublin, will take about 110 entries.

“We’ve had quite a few applications come in already that we’ve accepted,” said Trish Lackey, a Dublin events administrator.

“We have a marching band out of Baltimore, Md,” Lackey said.

“They seek out one or two parades per year.

They have it in their budget to go to other states to perform... . There aren’t many St. Patrick’s Day parades around the country.

“We are somewhat unique to that. They heard about us and want to come,” Lackey said.

The city held a parade float workshop last fall and drew a record attendance.

“The workshop is something more hands on, but year-round we help everybody get involved and get examples of how to be in this parade,” said Mary Jo DiSalvo, a Dublin events administrator.

“We want to educate people and help them be successful and enjoy the experience of being in the parade,” DiSalvo said

Although the Presidents Cup was held in Dublin already, the float created for the event will make a reappearance in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“We have taken the Presidents Cup float and reconfigured it for the new Grand Leprechaun to ride on,” DiSalvo said.

“It’ll carry the Grand Marshal in the Independence Day parade. When we created the float for the Presidents Cup, we knew we were not producing something we couldn’t use again.”

Grand Leprechaun has familiar face – and legs

By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com After twice winning the title “Best Legs in a Kilt,” Michael Blackwell is taking another St. Patrick’s Day honor this year The manager of the Dublin branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library will lead Dublin’s 2014 St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade as Grand Leprechaun.

The honor, given out annually by the city, recognizes community members who have significantly contributed to the community through leadership and community service.

“He’s so excited,” said Mary Jo DiSalvo, Dublin events administrator, who helps organize the parade.

“He knows the parents. He knows kids. He knows the community,” DiSalvo said.

Some area residents might recognize the Dublin resident from the library, others know him through the many organizations with which he is involved.

Blackwell is a member of the Dublin AM Rotary, the Dublin Bicycle Advisory Task Force and the Dublin City Schools Business Advisory Council.

He also serves as an ambassador of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the Historic Dublin Business Association.

“There are so many wonderful people in Dublin and they all care so passionately about making Dublin a great place to live,” Blackwell said.

“There’s so much community spirit to make Dublin an excellent city, I want to be among them,” he said.

“I get welcomed everywhere I go.

“Fortunately, my work for the library gives me a passport into the community I otherwise might not have,” Blackwell said.

“People are so friendly and so giving, I want to join them and be someone who gives back.”

The husband and father of four has found it easy to stay involved with community service because of the rewarding work.

“I love them all,” Blackwell said of the groups he’s involved with.

“It’s been great to be involved with the school on the Business Advisory Council ... and it’s been great working with the city and the chamber.

“The one I give the most time to is rotary,” Blackwell said.

“It’s the one that gives to students in Dublin and people who need the most help.

“It’s a wonderful organization that supports literacy and supports creating a better world for everyone.”

The Dublin AM Rotary has also put Blackwell in previous St. Patrick’s Day parades as he

helped marshal the parade.

Being in this year’s parade, however, will be different when he is recognized as the Grand Leprechaun.

“I was utterly stunned,” Blackwell said, of learning of the honor from the city.

“It’s still hard to believe,” he said.

“I’m familiar with the leprechauns. So many of them have done so much in the community. I’m honored to be counted among them.”

Blackwell can also count himself among winners of another kind – the Dublin Business Association’s Best Legs in a Kilt contest.

As a two-time winner, Blackwell plans to pull his kilt out from retirement for the parade.

“I am going to wear a kilt and bring out the full regalia with the jacket, hat, sporran – that’s the bag – and socks,” he said.

“I’ll be very dressed for the occasion. I just hope it’s not negative 10 degrees.”

March 15 and steps off from Metro Center and ends in Historic Dublin.

From 7 to 11 a.m., the Dublin Lion’s Club will hold a pancake breakfast in Sells Middle School.

will allow the public to see parade balloons inflated starting at 9 a.m. at a new location.

“It was a couple of years in the making, but because of logistics, trees and power lines, we moved it to the Graeter’s parking lot,” Lackey said.

“We wanted to move it to

the Graeter’s parking lot for easier access for spectators and it’s easier to get the balloons to the parade route,” she said.

The Hooligans will provide music from the spectator stage in front of Indian Run Elementary School before

the parade.

DiSalvo is expecting a large crowd for the Hooligans and parade to entertain.

“Given the weather we’re having we’re expecting record numbers March 16,” she said.

“By the time March 16 rolls around, we expect record

crowds because of all the cabin fever.”

Events in Historic Dublin prelude to March 15 parade

By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com Historic Dublin will offer plenty of ways to prepare for St. Patrick’s Day. In the days leading up to Dublin’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade March 15, the historic district will roll out an Irish welcome with Jig Thursday on March 13 and the Best Legs in a Kilt Contest March 14.

The Historic Dublin Business Association usually hosts the Jig on the first Thursday of the month, offering specials, music and entertainment.

“We (moved it) because the city of Dublin scheduled the state of the city on Jig Thursday,” said Robert Smith, Business Association coordinator.

“It was kind of a bummer, particularly because for our business owners, it’s important for them to be a part of that ... It’s not something we do on a regular basis, but it’s easier for us to move our event than for them to move theirs.”

But the move to March 13 worked well as Historic Dublin businesses offer ways to get in a St. Patrick’s Day mood.

“Because the Jig comes before St. Patrick’s Day we thought it would be good preparation,” Smith said.

“Our members have a lot to help you get ready for St. Patrick’s Day. “They have shirts and hats and sales for those kinds of thing ... . You can get a new T-shirt for St. Patrick’s Day or an Irish pin to wear to work.”

After getting outfitted for St. Patrick’s Day, Smith said a lesson about how to celebrate is on the agenda for the Jig.

“You can learn how to do the Irish jig,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of dancers that are performers you can come and watch.

“This is the first time we’re doing lessons,” Smith said. “You can come to the library and learn to do an Irish jig so you’re ready for St. Patrick’s Day.” Smith said The Brazenhead and Dublin Village Tavern will offer specials

on Irish beers and Irish whiskeys.

The Richens/Timm Academy of Irish Dance will teach the Irish jig at the Dublin branch library, 75 N. High St., from 6 to 8 p.m. March 13.

Visitors can also see a leprechaun on the streets of Historic Dublin with a pot of gold, as well as a strolling bagpiper.

A trip to the library between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., Brazenhead at 7:30 or

Dublin Village Tavern at 8 p.m. could also yield a chance to meet Dublin’s 2014 Grand Leprechaun, Michael Blackwell.

Blackwell is manager of the Dublin branch library and has been involved in numerous community service projects.

Festivities will continue March 14 as contestants bear their legs for Ha’penny Bridge Imports of Ireland’s fifth annual Best Legs in a Kilt contest.

The contest for men 21 and older will accept 17 contestants and last year’s winner, Garth Bishop, is defending his title, said Ha’penny owner Ann Gleine.

The men will ready their legs and kilts at 5 p.m. before heading to Brazenhead, 56 N. High St., at 6 p.m. for the contest.

“Judges are looking for how you carry yourself, how your kilt sways, overall impression (and) legs,” Gleine said.

“Bribes will be taken by judges.

Any monetary bribes will be donated to their favorite charity. There’s also crowd appeal.

“If they have a lot of people cheering for them, it will make an impression on the judges.”

Blarney Brothers Richard Taylor and Bill Jacob along with Grand Leprechaun and former Best Legs in a Kilt Winner Michael Blackwell will judge the contest.
