St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Dublin’s parade is place to wear green and be seen By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade experts have advice for the 20,000 expected to watch the procession March 14: dress for the weather and wear green. Dublin’s annual parade, featuring about 110 units, including floats, bands, horses, leprechauns and more, is slated to step off from Metro Center on Frantz Road at 11 a.m. March 14. Mary Jo DiSalvo, an events administrator for Dublin, has had a hand in organizing the parade for many years and has lots of tips for getting the most out of Dublin’s greenest parade. “Bring a chair,” she said. “Fold-up chairs are nice. “If (people) want to be in the front row, we see people putting out chairs as early as 7 or 8 a.m. and people go back to their favorite spots year after year,” DiSalvo said. People seem to set up earliest on Frantz Road, facing Metro Center on the side of the street where the Kroger Co. and Zettler hardware stores are, she said. “A lot of people like the area down by Mezzo ... and then we also get a good crowd at the corner (of Bridge and High streets) going into Historic Dublin.” With unpredictable spring weather, DiSalvo encouraged people to listen to the weather forecasts and dress for the occasion. “Dress for the weather and wear your green,” she said. “Weather has never dampened or

hindered people from wearing green. Sometimes watching spectators is as much fun as watching the parade.” Watching this year’s parade will be far from boring, although, DiSalvo said, adding the giant helium-filled bear will return. “You can see the ‘wow’ factor when it comes around the corner,” said Trish Lackey, a Dublin events administrator. Floats in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade include a new Dublin Irish Festival float. “We’ve been using the float for many years and it’s going into retirement,” DiSalvo said. “We created a new one. A brand new Dublin Irish Festival float will debut at this parade.” The festival honorary chairman Pete Fingerhut will ride on the float with his wife, Joanie, and son, Blake. The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade will be led by Grand Leprechaun Bob Adamek.

“Bob, his wife Sharon and daughter Kaylee are leading the parade on the Grand Leprechaun float and the former grand leprechauns will be behind them wearing their sashes and top hats,” DiSalvo said. Other activities The parade is expected to draw 20,000 spectators to Dublin, but it’s not the only St. Patrick’s Day event being held in the city March 14. The Dublin Lions Club will kick the day off at 7 a.m. at Sells Middle School, 159 W. Bridge Street, with a pancake breakfast. The Inflation Celebration will offer

a look at the parade balloons getting ready at 9 a.m. in the Graeter’s parking lot at 6255 Frantz Road. “We’ll have a balloon twister there as well and a circus calliope,” Lackey said. “It will be playing periodically throughout the Inflation Celebration.” After the parade the Dublin AM Rotary club will host the Blarney Bash from noon to 11 p.m. in a heated tent on the grounds of OCLC, 6540 Kilgour Place, and offer food, music and entertainment. “We also have restaurants, pubs and businesses having specials and the Co-

Grand Leprechaun Adamek to get different parade perspective By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com The upcoming Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade was already going to be special for the Adamek family. Bob Adamek said he watches his daughter, Kaylee, march in the parade with the Dublin Coffman High School Marching Band each year. This year will be her last because she is a senior. But Adamek will also be a part of this year’s Dublin St. Patrick’s Day parade, serving as the Grand Leprechaun. The honor is handed out each year to a Dublin resident who has made great contributions to the city through volunteering. “I’m just very proud to be in the same group of folks honored in the past,

Adamek said. “It’s a wonderful community we live in and past Grand Leprechauns have all been very involved. “I’m very proud to be associated with that group of people. Adamek has also been very involved in the community over the years, serving at the Dublin Irish Festival, and in various capacities for the Wyndham Village Civic Association, Dublin Foundation, Dublin Youth Athletics and the Coventry Woods Civic Association. As committee chairman for token management at the Irish festival, Adamek spends several hours during the event in charge of a group that collects tokens, counts them and then redistributes them around festival grounds. “It’s a good opportunity to get out and get around and lose a little weight, he

said of the 20-hour days. “We spend a lot of time on festival grounds. Adamek also served his community as a member of City Council from 1998 to 2001. He was vice mayor for two of those years. Adamek said his favorite work, however, has come from being a board member of Syntero, previously the Dublin Counseling Center. “I think my biggest contribution has been with the Dublin Counseling Center, which became Syntero after it merged with the Northwest Counseling Center, Adamek said. “I’ve been the on board for 10 years plus oversaw the merger as chairman of the board, he said. “I’ve watched what that group has done for folks, not just in Dublin, but beyond and the services they provide. March 14, Adamek will take a break from his volunteering to oversee Dublin’s parade. The honor was a surprise, but will allow Adamek and his wife, Sharon, to continue their tradition of going to the parade. “We’ve always gone to the parade, he said. “My daughter is a senior in the Coffman Marching Band and participated in the parade. “We were looking forward to it as her last parade. Now it will be really special: it will be her last St. Patty’s Day parade

Blarney Bash kicks off after Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com The Dublin AM Rotary club is hoping to add a little more Blarney to St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin. The St. Patrick’s Day event has been resurrected once more and organizers said they hope people will celebrate the greenest day of the year in Dublin. The Blarney Bash will run from noon to 11 p.m. in a heated tent on OCLC property at 6540 Kilgour Place. “I think what we saw was there has been a real lack in the community on St. Patrick’s Day for where people should go after the parade,” said Amy Snow, a member of the rotary’s Blarney Bash Committee. “We want to try to make this a day in Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day since it is a hallmark in the community.” Entertainment will come from the Richens/Timm Academy of Dance, Jacked Up, General Guinness, Homeland, Reaganomics and other bands. “The day will start out with a wee folk area from noon to 3 p.m. as well as Irish dance from the Richens/Timm Academy, then the Ladies of Longford and Two 2 Many,” Snow said. “From noon to 4 p.m. the music will be very Irish focused and more family friendly,” Snow said. “Then, the admission is $5 after

ties we support,” Snow said. “We support literacy in the schools by donating dictionaries to all third-graders in the district. “We’re engaged in Miracle League and do scholarships in the high school.” Locally the Dublin AM Rotary supports robotics teams, and nationally and internationally they support the Salvation Army and make donations to stop human trafficking.
