St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Former city manager Hansley to lead city’s parade March 18 By SARAH SOLE ThisWeekNews.com Tim Hansley made a point to attend Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade, even when he was no longer living in the city. This year, he’ll do so as leader of the holiday festivities March 18. Hansley, who served as Dublin’s first city manager, from 1987 to 2001, was selected as the parade Grand Leprechaun. In addition to presiding over the parade, he will judge the over 110 decorated floats participating in the parade. Although Hansley moved around a bit after his time managing the city of Dublin, serving in government capacities in other cities and counties in Ohio, he recently moved back to the city in which all four of his kids graduated from high school. “I’ve always considered (Dublin) home, he said. Hansley attended Walnut Ridge High School in east Columbus and has degrees in public administration and political science from Capital University and a master’s

degree in public administration from administration from the University of Oklahoma. Hansley started managing Dublin in 1987, when it was just a village. Shortly after, his title changed along with Dublin’s new designation as city. When he reflects on his time serving Dublin, Hansley said he’s proudest of the staff he helped to grow. “We wanted Dublin to be the place for other cities to emulate, he said. Bob Adamek worked along-

side Hansley while he was a councilman from 1997 through 2001, and the Dublin resident, himself, served as Grand Leprechaun in 2015. “I worked very closely with Tim Hansley, and I’ve known him for quite a long time, Adamek said. Hansley seemed like he was father of the city during his time as city manager, Adamek said. Any time there was a public event, Hansley was one of the last people to leave, Adamek

said. He said Hansley not only poured his life into Dublin, but he also spent time volunteering for the city. In addition to serving as president of the Dublin Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, Hansley is a volunteer Dublin Community Service Officer. Fourteen of his 45 years in city and county government were spent as Dublin city manager. The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration parade festivities kick off at 9 a.m. March 18 with the inflation celebration. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. The procession will start at Metro Place North, then travel north on Frantz Road, east on Bridge Street (state Route 161) and south on High Street in Historic Dublin before ending at Waterford Drive. The annual Blarney Bash, held by the Dublin A.M. Rotary club, will be held from noon to 11 p.m. March 18 in a large tent at Crawford Hoying, 555 Metro Place North. ssole@thisweeknews.com @ThisWeekSarah

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

15-foot tall step-dancers join parade By SARAH SOLE ThisWeekNews.com

“No realtor in town can provide YOUR home with greater exposure or generate MORE qualified buyers than I can!!!

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Parade in Dublin will include two new special guests: a pair of 15-foot Irish step dancing puppets. The puppets are planned to debut at the parade and return for the Dublin Irish Festival Aug. 4-6. Inspiration for adding the puppets came from seeing puppets used during the Columbus’ Highball Halloween event and other national parades, said Mary Jo DiSalvo, a Dublin events administrator. “It’s hard to paint a picture that’s going to do this justice, she said. The puppets will make their way, along with the rest of the parade, from Metro Place through Historic Dublin. This year’s event will be held March 18, the Saturday following the holiday. Puppet Designer Bruce Hanners worked with a team to design the puppets at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Work began in earnest in October, he said. “It’s a wonderful project, he said. Designing the 3-dimensional form to serve as the mold for the puppets took about six weeks, Hanners said. From there, the casting phase took a month and a half. The puppets are made from carbon fiber, and aluminum was added to joints such as elbows, knees and necks for flexibility.

start at Metro Place North, then travel north on Frantz Road, east on Bridge Street (state Route 161) and south on High Street in Historic Dublin before ending at Waterford Drive. Pancake breakfast The parade will be preceded by the Dublin Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast at Sells Middle School, 150 West Bridge Street. It is the 40th year for the breakfast that will be held from 7 to 11 a.m

Dublin’s large Irish bear and other massive balloons will be joined this year by 15-foot-tall Irish step-dancing puppets in the annual parade which will be held March 18. Each puppet comes complete with a costume and wig and weighs between 20 and 25 pounds. Each puppet is manned by a core threeperson crew, Hanners said. One person articulates the main body with a central pole. The step dancing is performed by two performers who each manipulate one of the puppet’s legs. Certain positions for the puppet could require additional attendants. Ten people

altogether are responsible for maintaining the puppet pair. Grand Leprechaun This year’s parade will be led by former Dublin city manager Tim Hansley, who will serve as the Grand Leprechaun. The inflation celebration at which the large parade balloons are inflated will begin at 9 a.m. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. The procession will

Blarney Bash St. Patrick’s Day festivities will also be held elsewhere in Dublin. The annual Blarney Bash, held by the Dublin A.M. Rotary club, will be held from noon to 11 p.m. March 18 in a large tent at Crawford Hoying, 555 Metro Place North. Historic Dublin will also be recognizing the holiday, said Rick Gerber, Historic Dublin Business Association president. Information will be posted on historicdublin.org as events are organized. Scott Dring, executive director for the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau, said during St. Patrick’s Day weekend two new stops will be added to the bureau’s “Irish Fairy Doors of Dublin Trail. New businesses featured along the trail are Creatively Stated, 28 N. High St., and Our CupCakery, 16 N. High St. More information about the trail can be found at dublinfairytrail. com.

The Wee Folk Tent will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Activities include crafts, face-painting, magic shows, Irish dancing clinics and animals from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
