Independence Day Celebration

New parade features, stadium concert will highlight Dublin’s Fourth of July By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNEWS.com Giants in size and music will be part of Dublin’s Independence Day celebration. The annual festivities, this year themed “Rockin’ all over the world,” include an evening concert with headliner John Fogerty and the traditional parade. The day begins with the long-standing tradition of fishing with the Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby at 8 a.m. at the Dublin Community Recreation Center pond. “I know there are a lot of fish in that pond,” said Mary Jo DiSalvo, a Dublin events administrator. “I see a lot of little girls and boys out there fishing all the time.” Parade balloons will start to take shape at the Inflation Celebration at 9:30 a.m. in the Graeter’s Ice Cream parking lot, 6255 Frantz Road. A circus calliope and balloon twister will be on hand as well, said Trish Lackey, a Dublin events administrator. Once the balloons are full, Dublin’s Independence Day parade will step off from Metro Center at 11 a.m., heading east down state Route 161 into the heart of Historic Dublin before going south on High Street. DiSalvo estimated the parade will have about 100 entries. “We have a new enter-

tainment professionals service coming in called Amazing Giants,” Lackey said. “They’re not your typical stilt walkers … They’re circus artists and there are a lot of theatrics, a lot more entertaining through dress and moves.” One entertainer from Amazing Giants will even ride an old-fashioned bicycle, also known as a high-wheeler. “I think it’ll be a really nice feature,” Lackey said. Two equestrian groups will ride in the parade in addition to Dublin’s marching bands and other traditional entries. Dublin Irish Festival Honorary Chairman Pete Fingerhut of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, will ride on the festival float and likely bring some friends from the zoo, DiSalvo said. Several Dublin children will also get to be part of the parade with the bicycle brigade. “It really has grown over the years,” Lackey said. “It’s always been a tradition in most parades, but people have become so passionate about it.” Gates at Coffman High School stadium will open at 4:30 p.m. Wristbands are required for entry this year and are available for purchase at the Dublin Community Recreation Center for $5. Those who would like

to attend the concert, but not go into the stadium can still set up chairs, blankets or dining canopies outside for free. The Skyhoundz Hyperflite Canine Frisbee Competition begins at 5 p.m. outside the stadium. Chris Jamison will take the stage for the evening

concert at 6 p.m. Jerome High School student Madison Williams will sing the National Anthem. John Fogerty will start his show at 8:15 p.m. with fireworks set for 9:50 p.m. “We have grown to have a fantastic fireworks

show,” DiSalvo said. “We have a fantastic lineup with Chris Jamison from the Voice. “I’m more pumped about him than I can even express,” DiSalvo said. “And we have John Fogerty … it’s just a perfect night.”
