St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
Grand Leprechaun Rinaldi says she is just part of the team
“
By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNews.com When Julie Erwin Rinaldi found out she was chosen as the 2016 Grand Leprechaun for Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Parade, she asked them to find someone else. “There are so many people that do so much more than I do, she said. Members of the committee of former Grand Leprechauns and Mayor Greg Peterson that make the decision said they believe differently and gave her the title that recognizes Dublin residents that give back. “Julie has two really important facets to her: she’s a Dublin resident and she and her husband are very involved in Dublin, Peterson said. “And, her involvement in Syntero. ... We’re lucky to have her here and playing those two roles. Rinaldi, however, said she sees a lot of people working and doing good in the community. “So much of what you do is so personal, she said. “You’re not doing it to get recognized. “But when I thought about all the other people who got the award I think they felt the same way, Rinaldi said. “We all work together. We’re
To single out one person seems overwhelming and daunting. I always see people out there working to make the community better. I feel like it’s a team rather than a person.

one big team of caring people. To single out one person seems overwhelming and daunting. “I always see people out there working to make the community better, she said. “I feel like it’s a team rather than a person. Rinaldi, who lives in Dublin with her husband David, is executive director of Syntero, formerly Dublin Counseling Center, where she works to help the community with mental health issues. “She also serves on the Healthcare Collaborative Board of Greater Columbus. Rinaldi volunteers throughout the community with the Dublin AM Rotary,
Dublin City Schools, Dublin Irish Festival and the Miracle League of Central Ohio, where she has been involved for nine years. “My husband and I started volunteering as (Miracle League) buddies for a year or two, she said of getting her start with Miracle League through the Dublin AM Rotary. “My husband is coaching a team and I’m a buddy. ... After my stepdaughter died of suicide we made the decision to reach out and help other people versus being victims. We could have fallen apart and not reached out to others. But, we made the conscious decision to reach out and be there for others.
Miracle League, Rinaldi said, is one of her favorite activities. “We just love being out there, she said. “We’ve had nine summers of fun. You just feel like you’re walking on sacred ground when you’re there. As Grand Leprechaun, Rinaldi will ride in the parade and judge the float-decorating contest. “For many years we’ve helped marshal the parade, she said. “We’ve done that pretty much every year that I’ve been involved with rotary. ... We love to do the marshaling because you can go out there and be involved. Rinaldi last year volunteered at the Dublin AM Rotary’s
Blarney Bash, which she plans to do again this year. “We’re going to be very busy, she said. As for her title of Grand Leprechaun, Rinaldi said she hopes to use it to spread the word about Dublin, Syntero and the Dublin AM Rotary. “I want to make sure that people know how great Dublin is and what a great community it is and how we’re a great team, she said. “I hope to bring more awareness to what Syntero and rotary do. There are so many exciting programs and services we provide. I want people to know about that. The Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Parade steps off from Metro Place at 11 a.m. March 12, and travels through Historic Dublin. Other March 12 St. Patrick’s Day festivities include the Lion’s Club pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in Sells Middle School, 150 W. Bridge St.; the Inflation Celebration at Graeter’s Ice Cream, 6255 Frantz Road; and the Blarney Bash from noon to 11 p.m. at 555 Metro Place. Grand Leprechauns plan to be flipping flapjacks By JENNIFER NOBLIT Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration festivities will start early March 12. The Dublin Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, in Sells Middle School, 150 W. Bridge St. The club has been serving up breakfast during the celebration for more than 40 years. “We started it a couple years after the Lions Club started in Dublin, said Lions Club President Jack Parren, adding that the pancake breakfast could be in its 42nd year. The focus for the Lions Club is sight and proceeds from the breakfast will go towards that goal. “Our main focus is helping people with eye problems, Parren said. “That’s our primary goal. We collect used eye glasses and give them to optometry students at (Ohio State University). “They take them to Central and South America (for redistribution). Like many St. Patrick’s Day Celebration events, attendance at the pancake breakfast is weather dependent.
Parren said anywhere from 400 to 700 people show up for all-youcan-eat pancakes and sausage. “We get some long lines, he said. “The earlier you come, the better. The breakfast is volunteer-run and some St. Patrick’s Day royalty will be volunteering this year from 8 to 10 a.m. About 10 former Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Grand Leprechauns will spend time serving up breakfast. A committee of former Grand Leprechauns and city administration choose someone to recognize annually who has contributed to the community with the title each year. The Grand Leprechaun will oversee St. Patrick’s Day Celebration festivities including the annual parade. “We’ve been talking among ourselves about doing something that would help nonprofits and get involved with an effort that would help contribute to nonprofit organizations, said Tom Holton, who was a Grand Leprechaun in 2006. “We were looking for
something that would get involved. Clay Rose, the 2010 Grand Leprechaun suggested helping with the thought of the Lions Club pancake breakfast. “He was the instigator who connected us with the Lions Club, Holton said. “He was the main person and a very important link. Volunteers usually come in the form of students or Lions Club members, Parren said. “When the Grand Leprechauns attended
the meeting and said they would see if they can round up some help we were happy, Parren said. The pancake breakfast is, in fact, a stop for some former Grand Leprechauns. “When I started polling Grand Leprechauns they said ‘Yes, I frequently drop in,’ Holton said. “It’s something almost all of them were familiar with. According to Holton, the former Grand Lepre-
chauns plan to do similar service project each year to help the community, but the Lions Club pancake breakfast will offer a job close to the parade route. The former Grand Leprechauns ride in the parade each year. “It really fit with the event, Holton said. “We’re already there. “It’s a great idea to get out and raise money for the community. The pancake breakfast is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Other March 12 St.

a bigger Blarney Bash in Dublin March 12
By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNews.com The Blarney Bash will return for the second year of its revival, adding to a full day of activities in Dublin March 12, the same day as the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Parade. The event, resurrected last year by the Dublin A.M. Rotary club, will return from noon to 11 p.m. in a heated tent at 555 Metro Place. The event that will include children’s activities, bands, beverages and food trucks is expected to draw anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 people. “We had to change facilities because OCLC is doing construction,” said Cindy Groeniger, who is organizing the event with Raj Hora. OCLC was the site of the Blarney Bash in 2015. “Crawford Hoying offered to let us have it at 555 Metro Place,” Groeniger said. “It’s a good thing because last year Dublin City Schools were on spring break and we had 3,000 in attendance … . We’re expecting anywhere from 4,500 to 5,000 people to attend (this year).” “It was a blessing in disguise,” Hora said of the change in location. “We have a tent that’s 40-percent bigger.” The new location also
puts the Blarney Bash in the center of all the action. Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day parade steps off from Metro Place at 11 a.m. “We’ll be right there in the center of everything,” Groeniger said. With 20,000 expected for the parade, many are expected to stick around for the Blarney Bash, even out-of-towners. “When the Blarney Bash came back last year we thought it was a great opportunity to create a package that would incent people to stay all night,” said Scott Dring, executive director of the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau. “There’s more for people to do and they can stay all night,” Dring said. “We had the parade and pancake breakfast, but in the evening we didn’t really have anything.” This year’s Blarney Bash will have a Wee Folk Area from noon to 5 p.m. with children’s activities. Entertainment scheduled before 5 p.m. includes DJ Matt Sexton, the Richens/Timm Academy of Dance, Jacked Up, The Ladies of Longford and Two 2 Many. Headliners after 5 p.m. are the Reaganomics and The Menus. Food trucks will also be on hand throughout the event, and water, pop, beer, wine and Irish
whiskey will be available to purchase. “There will be a lot more food trucks,” Hora said. “The music venue is stepped up. The Wee Folk Area has stepped up quite a bit. … “The venue is much better and parking is easier. And the weather will be better,” Hora said. The event is put on by the Dublin AM rotary and volunteers will work more than 200 shifts to make it happen. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Dublin AM Rotary Charitable Foundation that supports people locally and throughout the world. “We have several charities that we support,” Groeniger said. “A very big one is (the) Miracle League,” she said. “We have the Dublin Food Pantry, Salvation Army and Dublin robotics teams.” The foundation also supports Interact Clubs at Dublin’s high schools, supplies artificial hands internationally, gives dictionaries to Dublin third-graders and recently made a donation to Strides for Sobriety, Hora said. “I think it’s basically a home-grown thing for people to take pride in the Irish part of Dublin that reminds us Irish is an attitude,” he said.
“Everybody should be coming out with an attitude for this thing.” “We built it and now they’re coming,” Groeniger said. “The Blarney Bash is making Dublin a St. Patrick’s Day destination.” Tickets to the Blarney Bash are $7 online and $10 at the event. Children 12 and younger will be admitted at no charge. The Blarney Bash is still recruiting volunteers and sign up can be completed online at www. volunteerspot.com/login/entry/507266650099.
